Dave Lombardo (SLAYER, PHILM) took part in a special drum clinic on May 1 at the Barby Club (Kibutz Galoyot St. 52) in Tel Aviv, Israel. Video footage of his appearance can be seen in two parts below.
PHILM, the Los Angeles-based experimental post-hardcore triumvirate featuring Lombardo, guitarist/vocalist Gerry Nestler (CIVIL DEFIANCE), and bassist Pancho Tomaselli (WAR), released its debut album, "Harmonic", on May 15, 2012 via Ipecac Recordings.
Lombardo sat out SLAYER's recent Australian tour due to a contract dispute with the other members of the group. Filling in for him was Jon Dette (TESTAMENT, ANTHRAX). Dave has since been replaced in the band by Paul Bostaph, who was SLAYER's drummer from 1992 until 2001 and recorded four albums with the group.
On Saturday, June 15, IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson spoke to the Leicester Mercury about a charity helping disabled people take to the skies. Check out video footage below.
Dickinson, a commercial airline pilot and established aviation entrepreneur, has also been vice-patron of the Flying Scholarships for Disabled People (FSDP) charity for the past three years.
Previously known as Flying Scholarships for the Disabled (FSD), Flying Scholarships for Disabled People is a charity that provides a once-in-a-lifetime challenge for disabled people to help them realise their abilities through the medium of learning to fly.
While not a direct objective of the scheme, most scholars do fly solo (or "ghosted" solo) by the end of their training program and some go on to achieve their private pilot's licence.
All students who can satisfy their chief flying instructor during a general handling flying test that they have reached an acceptable standard of competence, compatible with the nature of their disability, are awarded the FSDP "Wings", based on the logo of the Royal International Air Tattoo.
"It's not just about teaching people with disabilities to fly, it's much more than that," Dickinson said. "It's about creating friendships, and there's a whole community around it and support system that comes with people encouraging each other. It's something I'm very proud to be involved in."

"The EP was always intended to be the primer, a sampler of what was to come on the LP," he said. "It's all metal all the time. It's not all fast, but it is all heavy."
"Heavy Metal Music" track listing:

"The Mike James Rock Show" conducted an interview with BLACK STAR RIDERS and THIN LIZZY vocalist/guitarist Ricky Warwick at this year's Download festival, which took place June 14-16 at Donington Park in Leicestershire, United Kingdom. You can now watch the chat below.
"Hey Judas", the new video from BLACK STAR RIDERS, the band formed by THIN LIZZY alumni Ricky Warwick (guitar, vocals), Damon Johnson (guitar), Scott Gorham (guitar), Marco Mendoza (bass) with new addition Jimmy DeGrasso (ALICE COOPER, MEGADETH, DAVID LEE ROTH, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES) on drums, can be seen below. The clip was filmed on May 27 with Northern Irish photographer, music? video director and typographical designer Mark Hylands at The Marshall Theatre in Milton Keynes.
"Hey Judas" comes off BLACK STAR RIDERS' debut album, "All Hell Breaks Loose", which registered the following first-week chart positions:
"All Hell Breaks Loose" sold around 2,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 5 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.
The "All Hell Breaks Loose" artwork features a painting by Gil Elvgren (March 15, 1914 - February 29, 1980), the legendary U.S. painter best known for his work on pin-up girls, advertising and illustration.
"All Hell Breaks Loose" was recorded and mixed by producer Kevin Shirley (LED ZEPPELIN, IRON MAIDEN, AEROSMITH, RUSH) at his The Cave studios in Malibu, California. Mastering duties were handled by Bob Ludwig (JIMI HENDRIX, RUSH, KISS, LED ZEPPELIN) at Gateway Mastering Studios in Portland, Maine.
The album was released as a standard CD and also as a special-edition digipak featuring a bonus track, "Right To Be Wrong", and a "making-of" DVD.
BLACK STAR RIDERS made its live debut on May 30 at The Marshall Theatre in Milton Keynes, United Kingdom. The set featured a mix of music from "All Hell Breaks Loose" along with classic THIN LIZZY tracks.
Keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen of Finnish symphonic metallers NIGHTWISH was interviewed by Joiz prior to the band's June 15 performance at the Greenfield festival in Interlaken, Switzerland. You can now watch the chat below.
Holopainen has known NIGHTWISH's current touring vocalist, Dutch singer Floor Jansen, for more than 10 years already, having previously toured with her former band, AFTER FOREVER.
Jansen made her live debut as the frontwoman of NIGHTWISH on October 1, 2012 at Showbox Sodo in Seattle, Washington following the abrupt departure of the band's lead singer of the past five years, Anette Olzon.
Asked about the reasons for Olzon's sudden exit from the group, Tuomas told U.K.'s Metal Hammer magazine: "I'm sure it came as a shock to everybody. We came out with a statement [regarding the split], which pretty much says it all. It still is a private matter, and that's all we wanna say about it, like, ever. It was an amicable divorce, so to say, and made in good spirit, and we are just looking to the future. There really is no reason to go back into all the details and all that. I mean, this is not politics, this is a rock band."
Regarding whether there is a chance that Floor will become the official new NIGHTWISH lead singer, Tuomas said: "The way that we have decided is that we're gonna continue with her until the end of the festival season in 2013 — just have fun, just do the shows the best we can. I mean, the atmosphere in the band is so good at the moment, [we want to] just enjoy this what we have right now. They try not to think about NIGHTWISH at all for a few months. Everybody take a little vacation. And we already have the rehearsal place for the next album booked in 2014 — from July to September. So that's how far we have planned. But when we do the last festival show next August, after that, it's gonna be total nothing for a few months. So I would say everything is possible, but that's really not the thing that we want to be thinking about right now, because there's absolutely no reason to."
The Pulse Of Radio reports that RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE drummer Brad Wilk, who also plays on the new BLACK SABBATH album "13", has been served with divorce papers by his wife, Selene Vigil-Wilk. According to TMZ.com, Brad and Selene officially separated last Friday (June 14), with Selene filing papers in Los Angeles County Superior Court just three days later on Monday (June 17). The couple were married in 2005 and have two young children.
Selene, who used to sing for the all-girl punk act 7 YEAR BITCH, is asking for joint legal custody of the children, but wants primary physical custody and spousal support.
In addition to being a founding member of RAGE, Wilk played in AUDIOSLAVE with two of his RAGE bandmates and most recently handled the drums on the BLACK SABBATH reunion album in place of absent original drummer Bill Ward.
SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler told The Pulse Of Radio how Wilk did during the sessions. "I think in the studio, Brad was more like a Bill kind of thing, like an old-school drummer — more jazzier and that kind of thing, which suited the album, the new album," he said.
Wilk is not touring with SABBATH. Tommy Clufetos, the drummer in SABBATH singer Ozzy Osbourne's solo band, is handling live duties.
Back in July 2012, the Los Angeles Times reported that Brad Wilk and his wife had put their house in Malibu, California on the market for $2.699 million.
Wilk, 44, bought the house in 2003 for $1.9 million.
A trailer for "Gamble Shot", the debut album from REBELLIOUS SPIRIT — a quartet from Southern Germany and a promising new hard rock band consisting of members that are between 17 and 20 years of age — can be seen below. The CD will be released on June 24 in Europe and July 2 in the U.S. via Steamhammer/SPV. The effort, due out as a digipak with three bonus videos, jewel case and download, was recorded at the Cubeaudio Studios in Göttingen between September 2011 and February 2012. The final mix and the final mastering were completed in July 2012.
"Gamble Shot" track listing:
01. Let's Bring Back 02. Sweet Access Right 03. Cry For You 04. Change The World 05. Lights Out 06. Gone Wild 07. Don't Leave Me 08. You're Not The Only One 09. Forever Young 10. Rock It
REBELLIOUS SPIRIT's founder members, the brothers Jannik (17, vocals/guitar) and Jens Fischer (20, bass/vocals), are thrilled to have a label home like Steamhammer/SPV. "Naturally, it’s a great honor for us to be signed by a renowned record company such as Steamhammer/SPV who have a long tradition in rock music," they say. "Plus we get on really well with Olly Hahn and his team at a human level so we are now busy working on our future plans."
Formed in the summer of 2010, REBELLIOUS SPIRIT's lineup is completed by Silvio Bizer (18, drums) and Corvin Domhardt (18, guitar/vocals). After a number of trial concerts, autumn 2010 saw them record their demo CD, "Heart Of Swabia", featuring three original songs and three cover versions. In the meantime, the band has played more than 40 gigs, and has supported RECKLESS LOVE, KISSIN' DYNAMITE and PUSSY SISSTER in Holland, Flensburg, Cologne and Munich.
On Friday, August 2, LINGUA MORTIS ORCHESTRA will release its new album titled "LMO". The three RAGE musicians — Victor Smolski (guitar), Peavy Wagner (vocals and bass) and André Hilgers (drums) — worked at full stretch to finish their opulent orchestral project that can be considered a continuation of 1996's "Lingua Mortis" album, back then a true piece of pioneering work.
The entire album was composed by Victor Smolski, who cooperated with two orchestras from Spain and Russia, enlarging the number of this mammoth project's participants to more than 100. Together with longtime co-producer Charlie Bauerfeind (BLIND GUARDIAN, HAMMERFALL), Victor Smolski produced and mixed the record in Twilight Hall Studio in Krefeld, Germany.
"LMO" follows an exciting concept on the burning of witches in Gelnhausen in 1599, written by vocalist Peavy Wagner and based on a true story. Apart from the three RAGE musicians, two female vocalists belong to LINGUA MORTIS ORCHESTRA's regular cast: Jeannette Marchewka and soprano singer Dana Harnge. Guest vocals were contributed by Henning Basse (ex-METALLIUM), among others.
In the clip below, Smolski talks about the coordination of two orchestras.
"LMO" track listing:
01. Cleansed By Fire a) Convert The Pagans Pt. 1 b) The Inquisition (instrumental) c) Convert The Pagans Pt. 2 02. Scapegoat 03. The Devil's Bride 04. Lament 05. Oremus (instrumental) 06. Witches' Judge 07. Eye For An Eye 08. Afterglow
The cover artwork was created by Felipe Machado Franco who's also been responsible for the latest RAGE artwork, "21". The band photos were shot by Pia Kintrup.
This past Saturday, May 4, a rough mix of "LMO" was presented to a group of international journalists. Journalist Martin Stark of Germany's Rock It magazine describes the record as an "opulent metal opera, more orchestral than anything else, partly heavier than RAGE and melodic beyond my wildest dreams from end to end." Guitar editor Nico Ernst states: "Never before has the combination of band and orchestra worked that well." Metal.de writer Florian Schörg takes the thought further and judges: "The perfect symbiosis of two worlds sparkles with both fantastic melodies and heaviness. The gigantic spectrum of emotions can be considered the cream topping on this extraordinarily delicious sound cocktail."
Tom Keifer, best known as the singer/songwriter/guitarist of the Philadelphia-based blues-rock band CINDERELLA, was interviewed on the latest edition of the weekly two-hour classic hard rock and metal show "Noize In The Attic". You can now listen to the program using the widget below.
Keifer's debut solo album, "The Way Life Goes", sold 5,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 78 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was released on April 30 via Merovee Records (through Warner Music Group's Independent Label Group).
The collection of 14 new songs ranges from intimate, organic, acoustic tracks to driving hard rock. It embraces the blues, rock and country roots that have always been present in his unique sound that has generated the sale of over 15 million records worldwide for CINDERELLA. Rolling Stone praised Keifer as "a gritty, bluesy (rocker) with enough genuine swagger to draw comparisons to Mick Jagger."
"This record was a labor of love," Keifer told TriCities.com. "When I started this record, CINDERELLA was in the middle of a lawsuit with Sony Records. This record is not in any way to be taken as me stepping away from CINDERELLA."
"I took a lot of time making this record," he continued. "I made it over 10 years. I wanted to make something I loved. My wife, Savannah (Snow), co-wrote a lot of the songs with me. It was a blessing to me.
"Each song has something to do with life. It's just life, love, love lost, being crazy, going crazy, being lost. The record, there's no change, really, in style. It has the peaks and valleys.
"I've always approached music, played music that I like. I've never chased trends through CINDERELLA and with this album. It reflects what's in me."
"The Flower Song", the album's first single, was serviced to AAA radio stations nationwide on February 4, while "Solid Ground" was serviced to all rock formats on March 11.
Keifer wrote "The Flower Song" with Jim Peterik, formerly of the bands SURVIVOR and the IDES OF MARCH.
"The Way Life Goes" is a raw, introspective look at the roller coaster ride that has been Keifer's life for the past 15 years. From being told that he would never sing again as a result of a partially paralyzed left vocal cord, to the emotional and personal battles that followed, his solo debut is a story of perseverance, a testament to the power of passion and will, when combined with a true love of music.
"It's pretty scary," Keifer said of his vocal paralysis. "I've had six surgeries to deal with the collateral damage. Performing… has been difficult for me because of the vocal issues I've had. I work several hours every day on that. That's a difficult thing for me every day."
LickLibrary and Total Accuracy co-founder Stuart Bull recently conducted an interview withh KISS guitarist Tommy Thayer. You can now watch the chat in two parts below.
KISS unveiled its brand new stage show this on June 1 at the opening concert the European leg of their "Monster" world tour in Stockholm, Sweden.
"It's really great," KISS frontman Paul Stanley told VH1 Radio Network's Dave Basner about the new tour. "You know, for so many years, we've talked about a new stage show and basically what we've been doing has been an extension of the old stage show. So people would sometimes come and, obviously, the band does a great show and it's great to be there, but some people would say, 'Gee, it doesn't look that different.' This is a completely different stage, it follows a really great theme, the lights are like nothing you've ever seen before."
KISS recently completed an Australian tour with very special guests MÖTLEY CRÜE.
"Monster", the 20th studio album from KISS, sold 56,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 3 on The Billboard 200 chart.
"Torn Apart", the new video from Chapel Hill, North Carolina hard rock heavyweights VALIENT THORR, can be seen below. The clip was helmed by "Lemmy" documentary co-director Greg Olliver and was shot on location in Castle Hayne, North Carolina on the Cape Fear River.
"Torn Apart" comes off VALIENT THORR's sixth studio album, "Our Own Masters", which was released on June 18 via Volcom Entertainment. Recorded at Ronnie Jone Sound Studios in Athens, Georgia and produced, engineered and mixed by Kyle Spence of experimental rockers HARVEY MILK, the CD shines a bright light on VALIENT THORR's singular sound, delivering twelve tracks of balls-to-the-wall rock that yearns to be played at full volume.
Formed in 2000, VALIENT THORR plays loud, fast heavy music — influenced by both metal and punk — that draws creatively from touchstones such as AC/DC, THIN LIZZY and the MC5 (MOTÖRHEAD might also be a point of reference here, though more in spirit than in sound). The band has a stranglehold on amped-up hard rock and stripped-down heavy metal, barnstorming stages across the world with its catchy, ass-kicking riffs, unmatched energy, fist-pumping anthems and hyper-agitated live show, led by front man and ringleader Valient Himself, whose highly entertaining, heady lyrics (the singer was once a college professor) become a call to arms for the band's legions of devoted fans — nicknamed the "Thorriors" — that assemble in chapters and track the band from show to show, town to town.
VALIENT THORR is a group that averages between 200 and 250 live shows a year, be it on stage as beloved headliners exposing the world to developing new acts (see ROYAL THUNDER, RED FANG) or criss-crossing the globe as special guests of peers such as MASTODON, MOTÖRHEAD and MISFITS.
"Our Own Masters" is a triumphant display of crescendo-ing riffs, rousing vocals and canyon-wide grooves and a record set to remind the world why VALIENT THORR's high-voltage concoction of rock, metal and punk and formidable reputation proceeds them for a reason. The record's wild, extraterrestrial cover artwork (seen below) is taken from a 1975 painting by John Aylward, father of VALIENT THORR drummer Jason Aylward.
"Our Own Masters" track listing:
01. Immaculate Consumption 02. Master Collider 03. Manipulation 04. No Strings Attached 05. Life Hands You Demons 06. Torn Apart 07. Cerberus 08. Good News Bad News 09. Insatiable 10. Crowd Pleaser 11. Nervous Energy 12. Call Off the Dogs
Italian modern thrashers SAWTHIS have set "Youniverse" as the title of their third album, tentatively due before the end of the year via an as-yet-undisclosed label. The follow-up to 2010's "Egod", which is currently in the mixing stage, "will sound more thrash-oriented and it will be a concept album based on the theme of multiple personality disorder," according to a press release. The CD was once again recorded at Potemkin Studios with producer Paolo Ojetti (INFERNAL POETRY).
SAWTHIS recently parted ways with guitarist Andrea Giordano due to musical differences. He has since been replaced by Janos Murri (ex-RESURRECTURIS, DARKSIDE, DEMOLITION), who has already performed with the band on two European tours.
"Egod" was released in May 2010 via Scarlet Records.
Japan's "Metal Moment" podcast conducted an interview with Chris Bay of German power metallers FREEDOM CALL on June 2 at the Metalfest in Plzen, Czech Republic. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.
FREEDOM CALL released an anniversary album, "Ages Of Light", on April 26 in Germany, April 29 in the rest of Europe and May 7 in North America via SPV/Steamhammer.
"Ages Of Light" is a best-of double album filled to the brim with 18 of the most important songs from the band's history, plus a bonus CD entitled "Masqueraded", featuring six FREEDOM CALL tracks in a new, unusual guise. There is a ska version of "Metal Invasion", "Mr. Evil" as a melodic reggae track, "Hero On Video" as a speed ska number and "Rockin' Radio" in a killerbilly version.
"Those 18 numbers are usually celebrated at our gigs, or even requested with a vengeance," explains mainman Chris Bay.
"Masqueraded" is complemented by FREEDOM CALL in campfire strumming style (including music sheet/tablature) and "Age Of The Phoenix" in a power swing outfit. It would hardly be possible to present these tracks more colorfully. Bay says: "Our intention with 'Masqueraded' was to inspire musicians and music fans to create their own, personal version of one of our songs — irrespective of musical style — and send it to us."
"Ages Of Light" combines not only the essence of the best songs from the seven FREEDOM CALL studio recordings to date, but also marks a meeting of various former and current band members. Along with Chris Bay and guitarist Lars Rettkowitz, three different drummers can be heard on the bonus tracks: founding member Dan Zimmermann, along with his successors Klaus Sperling and Ramy Ali, whom fans know from the most recent FREEDOM CALL tour. The two bassists, Samy Saemann and original bandmember Ilker Ersin, and guitarist Cédric "Cede" Dupont, who was part of FREEDOM CALL between 2001 and 2005, are also featured.
"It was great fun to work with old and new friends alike at the studio, turning previously typical FREEDOM CALL numbers into unusual songs," Bay explains, stressing that the group will commence work on a new studio album after the spring tour. "But first we want to celebrate our anniversary in style!"
"Ages Of Light" track listing:

"Carolus Rex", the latest album from Swedish metallers SABATON, has been certified platinum in Sweden for sales in excess of 40,000 copies. This marks the first time a Swedish heavy metal band has achieved this milestone in its home country. (Note: The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry [IFPI] in Sweden has revised the sales requirements for albums to reach platinum status in the country three times in the last 17 years — from the pre-1996 level of 100,000 to the current 40,000.)
"This is unbelievable," says SABATON bassist Pär Sundström. "I'm taken [aback] and have trouble finding the words. It's a milestone in our career and shows that everything we ever stood and fought for has been feasible. This has hardly been a bed of roses, but acknowledgement like this means that we can get through anything."
SABATON's 2012 "Swedish Empire Tour" was one of the greatest jaunts ever undertaken by a heavy rock band in Sweden. It was part of a two-year-long world tour that will see the band play in excess of 200 gigs in all parts of the globe. It will include two upcoming Swedish shows with IRON MAIDEN (at Malmö Stadium and the newly built 50,000-plus-capacity Friends Arena in Stockholm) and additional dates with IRON MAIDEN before the trek wraps in the U.S. this fall.??
In other news, SABATON has announced that, as a treat to its loyal fan base, it will perform its entire 2008 album, "The Art Of War", which helped break the band outside of Sweden, during SABATON's headlining concert at its own festival, Sabaton Open Air, in Falun in August. And to cap off an amazing 2013, SABATON will release a concert DVD in late autumn featuring footage of the band's 2012 performance at the Przystanek Woodstock festival, where they played in front of over 600,000 people. After this, the band will return to the studio during the winter months to start working on the follow-up to "Carolus Rex".??
"Carolus Rex" was released on May 22, 2012 via Nuclear Blast Records. The lyrics for the CD, which was made available in both English and Swedish, deal with the Swedish Empire (referring to the Kingdom of Sweden between 1561 and 1721).
The band previously stated about "Carolus Rex": "For the first time ever we have had an expert to help us out with the theme, the well-known Swedish historian Bengt Liljegren. We have also added some extra time in the studio to find the absolute right sound on 'Carolus Rex', and our producer, Peter Tägtgren, says that this album will mark a brand new standard for how a heavy metal album should sound like!"
Liljegren's published works include acclaimed biographies of Adolf Hitler and Karl XII. He also appeared in the popular Swedish TV series "Boston Tea Party".
SABATON last year parted ways with guitarists Oskar Montelius and Rikard Sundén, drummer Daniel Mulback and keyboardist Daniel Mÿhr.
