SLAYER Frontman On RANDY BLYTHE: 'I Hope That It Gets Settled And He Can Get Home' - July 12, 2012
SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya (pictured below) is one of a number of musicians who have come out in support of LAMB OF GOD frontman Randy Blythe, who is facing manslaughter charges in the Czech Republic.

Blythe, 41, is accused of causing the fatal injury that occurred at LAMB OF GOD's May 24, 2010 show in Prague. The singer allegedly either pushed or struck a 19-year-old fan named Daniel N. — a guitarist in a local metal band — and that person died almost a month later of bleeding in the brain.

Randy has been charged with causing "bodily harm of the fourth degree, resulting in the death of a fan" and faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Speaking to Fitz Madrid, afternoon DJ at the Phoenix, Arizona radio station 98 KUPD, Araya said (hear audio below), "[Randy did] what anybody in a band would do — a kids gets up on stage and you push him off, and that's where the discrepancy is. I haven't seen [video footage of the alleged incident], and [the people that have supposedly seen it] said it's pretty obvious in the video clip what was going on and what happened. I haven't seen it, so I can't tell you what I think. But it's like anything else — a kid gets on stage, and you push him off. And whatever happens to him down there afterwards… First [and] foremost, they have security there so kids don't get on stage. But they also have security there so the kids don't hurt themselves when they come over the [barricade or when they try to come up on stage]. So it's like a two-deal thing."

He added, "I feel sorry for [Randy], 'cause now he's stuck in this spot. It's kind of hard to say if it would have been a different outcome had he not touched the kid or if it'd still be the same outcome. I hope that it gets settled and I hope that he can get home. That's just not cool."

He continued, "Nowadays, you have to really think about that kind of shit. I hate to say this, 25 years ago, stuff like that, if it happened, it happened. Nowadays, if it's happened, everybody's discovered that they have 'rights.' Rights are great, but you also have to share in the responsibility. You have to be a responsible person. You have to be responsible for your own action. Randy has to be responsible for his action of whatever he did. But the kid has to be responsible for the action he took upon himself to get up on the stage. [He] took the initiative to do that. [The security] guys [apparently] said, 'No, you can't do that.' And apparently [the kid] tried several times [to get up on stage].

"To me, we all carry the burden of our own responsibility — being responsible for our own actions and ourselves; we all share in that. Everybody needs to understand that, and that's something that people don't understand these days. Now, whenever something happens, it's like, 'You did this to me.' It's like, 'Well, we told you not to go there and you did it ten times. And the tenth time, we're like, 'OK, buddy. How you're gonna get it through your thick skull? Get the fuck out.' You know what I mean?!"

Tom has it right. Anybody stage diving in my opinion is liable for the outcome of their actions. I've done it tons of times, and if I would have hurt somebody bad, I'd own up to it. If Randy jumped into the pit and started some shit on his own, then yeah, he could be held responsible for what he had done, but this kid was on stage numerous times when he knew he should not be. Also, like Scott Ian said, this is why you cant even throw down at any metal show anymore, because of lawsuits like this.

Tom is actually a really smart, cool guy. I've seen video of him dropkicking a kid off of a stage. If anybody knows how it goes, it's Tom.. I mean he's been doing this shit since what, 1981?

Yes! That footage is on Live Intrusion, right? There's a guy onstage facing the crowd and Tom kicks him square in the ass while still playing. The guy takes a header straight down into the crowd and Tom laughs his ass off and mimes a kick to show how he did it! Hilarious stuff.

What does "taking responsibility" for repeatedly getting on stage mean? Certainly not death! Sure, it's annoying and maybe even threatening for the band, but come on.

IMO, these stage divers should be thrown out of the venue first time. Arrest them and charge them with trespassing if they try to re-enter. That would stop it in hurry.

you must hate metal or something. Myself, never been much of a mosher or stage-diver... I've always preferred to headbang right up in front, but that doesn't mean everyone should express their energy in the way I do. But to ban people for stage-diving? Why don't you just go to an indie rock concert so you can just stand there trying to look cool?

Pussy-whipped ideas are starting to destroy the genre of music that built it's foundation on aggression & the release of energy that could never be released in any other public forum

Though I've not seen the video of the incident, I agree with Araya in that Daniel N. is responsible for his actions. Moshing and stage diving is a dangerous act, you can potentially hurt others as well as yourself.

If Blythe did push the kid to his death, it was unintentional. The stage at this spot is rather crammed with the band, I can see how annoying it is to have fans bumping into others on the stage.

And more over, where the fuck was the security team who prevents the fans from getting on the stage? This is my contention with the motive to prosecute Blythe and not the event staff at this venue.

as usual.

Seems like a pretty smart dude. What's he doing in a band with Kerry King? Heh.

Anyway, there's a lot of sense in what he says. It's not like stage-diving is a safe recreation - you're always taking some kind of chance when you get up on a high platform and launch yourself into the air. Add the fact that you're NOT SUPPOSED TO BE UP THERE and some burly security guys and a pissed off singer and - bam! If you don't know the risks that you're kind of an idiot - no offense to the deceased. But seriously...I saw a guy stage dive at a Melvins show once and the crowd just parted and let him hit the concrete. Medics came and hauled him away with what looked like a broken neck and fractured skull.

Be careful out there little moshers!

Haha speaking of stage diving incidents, I remember being at a show in New York about 6 or 7 years ago, and Immolation was headlining. They were just about finished with their set, when this guy who weighed a minimum of 400 pounds got up on stage, and proceeded to do a stage dive....Not one person up front wanted anything to do with it, and they all cleared out of the way, and the guy did a full belly flop on the floor.

Thought the same thing...then I read the next paragraph "He added"...I thought "wait, here it comes"...still nothing. Next paragraph "He continued"..."Oh, it's got to be in here"...I was surprised at the end that he didn't, and he shouldn't have either. His views were put into words perfect without referencing self defense from lunatic fans.

He took the initiative, he risked his life, and as sad as the outcome is, he's responsible for his own actions. Everyone knows the severity of diving from (sometimes as high as) ten feet out into an audience that's full of huge openings (pit's and what-not). It's either bodies or concrete you're hitting...if you're willing to take that risk, you can't blame the performer, the fans who didn't catch you, or the person who poured the concrete. If anyone at this show is to blame, it's security.

It's a shame, but it's one of them cases where the victim was endagering himself to the point the worst had happened. Freak accidents happen quite frequently. Until I see footage of Blythe pummeling this guy, I'm sticking with innocent and it's a bullshit shakedown at the cost of another person's life.

This is good.

When Randy gets out I think he will be pretty humbled by the amount of support he has had from the metal community. Despite the fact that it hasn't been all over the tabloids, the metal community has backed the guy which is pretty great really.

Hopefully this all ends soon.

Tom could possibly be the most sensible voice in all of the Metal world.

I don't think any person could deny his extensive experiences with crazed fans.

If only everyone in the world could be more like Tom Araya from Slayer.

I'm not sure anyone's outdone 'Reign In Blood' in the last 25+ years either...

When a fan jump on stage he pretty much put his well being in jeopardy. Each time you stage dive, you put yourself at risk, the guy knew that very well. I've seen band members pushing and kicking people off stage many many times. If it's clear you can't get on stage and you insist that you need to do it, you pretty much deserve a good solid push out. Sucks for the kid but he played with fire and got burned. Clubs should put a warning on the front door and that's it.

Tom might be the coolest, most honest, guy in metal. He doesn't run his mouth, but he has no problem telling you exactly what he thinks. You get 0 bullshit from him, at all times.

Kerry King has no problem telling you what he thinks but he runs his mouth a lot and it's at least 50% bullshit.

Mustaine will tell you what he thinks but he runs his mouth all the time and it's 100% bullshit.
