VIVIAN CAMPBELL: I Feel It's Time To Revisit The DIO Songs I Wrote - Aug. 1, 2012
Peter Hodgson of SeymourDuncan.com recently conducted an interview with former DIO and current DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

SeymourDuncan.com: So DEF LEPPARD is re-recording more old material. Why?

Vivian: It's a long and complicated story as to why we've decided to re-record, but basically it involves our not being able to come to a financial agreement with our former record company as regards digital releases. We are continuing to re-record the biggest hits of the band's catalogue as, frankly, we see no signs that the label will come to an acceptable arrangement with us anytime soon and in the meantime we wish our music to be available to those who want to buy it in a digital format. Personally, I think they're pretty impressive versions! As we now live in an à la carte world when it comes to music purchases, we're concentrating on the most popular songs first. We have no plans to re-record entire albums at this stage.

SeymourDuncan.com: What's it like for you to revisit the DIO material [with your new band featuring original DIO members Vinny Appice (drums), Jimmy Bain (bass) and Claude Schnell (keyboards) along with singer Andy Freeman]? The crowd seemed to go insane when you played "Rainbow In The Dark" with STEEL PANTHER recently!

Vivian: I'm very excited about revisiting the DIO songs again, as are the other guys from the original band. It's been a long time since I was able to address that time in my life as there were a lot of bad memories that went along with all the great music. However, now I can focus on the positive again and I feel it's time to revisit the songs I wrote and the way that I played guitar back then. They were great records and we were all very much a part of making them.

SeymourDuncan.com: What do you think of the [DEF LEPPARD] album "Slang" these days? It seems to have held up very well and not dated like a lot of other bands' albums from that time have.

Vivian: I always had mixed feelings about "Slang", even while we were recording it. I do very, very much like the sonics of it, as we used real drums for the first time in many years and the guitar sounds are also much less processed and more direct. However, the issue I always had with the record was that I personally don't believe that we did ourselves justice in terms of the songwriting — I feel we could've fine-tuned them a lot more and that we were pandering too much to the then current trends in music. To me, DEF LEPPARD was always synonymous with well-crafted songs and big choruses and harmonies, and whilst there was an obvious shift in musical tastes going on at the time, I still felt that we could have remained more true to the principles that had shaped the band's success.

How he wants to "revisit" after Ronnie is gone. I'll never support him in anything Dio related.

I am the biggest Dio fan and would never disrespect Ronnie, but Viv did write the riffs on the first couple albums and I am sure he is proud of the stuff he created. This is not a reunion, but a chance for Viv to get out there and play some of his early works.

I usually don't diss on anyone but this guy just doesn't cease to amaze me - what a tool. Without Dio, he would be a nobody. Without the vision, guidance, encouragement, and trust of a legend he would be playing in bar bands the rest of his life. He still offers up no respect for the man who gave him a chance and a career. Yes, he can play guitar - but appears to not be a very good human being.

the only reason anybody thinks he is a good guitar player is because of DIO. after that he never did anything close to what he did with RJD and never missed a moment to diss him and metal music. now after Ronnie is dead he suddenly loves the the music Ronnie created and wants to play it again. it's funny he and the other guys feel like they were so mistreated but never said a word about it for 25 years but after Ronnie not around to defend himself they feel free to tell their side. fuck you second rate hacks! none of you ever did anything notable after you left his band.

I love Campbell's guitar playing back then. Shredding solos, Bad ass riffs. But if you look at what he has been doing after those Dio albums and how he recently embraces the music of DIO as a band, it's all financially driven. Does no one remember what he said about those DIO albums. Here it is:

In a recent interview posted on DEF LEPPARD's official web site, current DEF LEPPARD/former DIO guitarist Vivian Campbell talked about his disdain for hard rock. "The real irony of that is I actually don't like hard rock music," he said. "I know it's a strange thing to say, but I don't really care about my past contributions. Even now I still get these guys coming up to me going 'Duuuuuuuude!', giving me the DIO devil sign and yelling 'Holy Diver!!' and 'Rainbow In The Dark, whoo hoo!!' and it's cool that they remember it, but that music never mattered to me — and still doesn't." Campbell went on to praise and rip Ronnie James Dio, with whom he had an acrimonious split in the mid-'80s, "Oh yeah, night after night, [Ronnie] was absolutely on the money," Vivian said. "An incredibly strong voice and within that niche genre of dungeons and dragons and rainbows and midgets... You know, the sorta old school heavy metal, he's an incredible talent. But he's an awful businessman and way more importantly, one of the vilest people in the industry.

Now that Dio is dead, you're going to try and say, It's Time Baby....??

Fuck you! Go pour some sugar on yourself.

sure and let's see them play the music that they actually recorded. Vivian & co setlist would destroy Goldy's.

Vivians camp gets HD, LIL, SH, DE, SH, Magica, KTD

Goldy's camp gets DE, Magica, MOTM, KTD, LUTW.

no contest. Vivian & Co win by a landslide.

Get your information right!

Viv was on Holy Diver, Last In Line and Sacred Heart.

Goldy is on Dream Evil, Magica and Master of the Moon.

Plus Goldy co-wrote every song with Ronnie ( Expect for a few things on Magica, before Goldy joined ). You adding albums to Viv proves you know nothing. Also, when it came to the Rainbow and Sabbath songs to be done live, Goldy has always nailed them perfectly. Viv never had the tone for them.

and Steve Clark is one of the most underated guitarists in hard rock history. PERIOD. his riffs are so cool and unique and legendary. He had a style that no one was doing at the time. Catchy, yet strange riffs, kind of minor and melancholic. Just check out the cool riffs in a song like coming under fire, billy's got a gun, too late for love (check out the lick at 3.25...that is steve clark baby. fucking cool shit. Viv has never and will never write anything cool like that.

Another thing Mr overrated will never be is the heart and soul of a band like Steve Clark was. The good Leppard was 95 percent Clark if you look at the credits and listen to the early albums. Viv is nothing to him. Even Collin is ediocre. Clark was the Angus young, the Robbin Crosby, the Kurt cobain of the band.

Vinnie's words might have more substance if he had said them while Ronnie was still alive. Ronnie was Vinnie's meal ticket, and Dio isn't around anymore, so Vinnie has his post Ronnie career to think about. Evidently, that includes kissing Vivian's ass. Kind of sad, actually.

Guess what, Dio talked shit about Vivian all the time as well. Does that make him a bad person? Oh no, because you worship the toilet water he shit in. I am a huge Dio fan, always have been, always will be. But all this idol worship is fucking pathetic. And your double standard of human decency based on who you personally liked better as a musician and performer is weak as fuck!

exactly. vivian wsn't the only person to leave Dio. Vinny & Goldy came & went. obviously there were reasons why band members did so but we aren't exactly there to know the reasons so to blindly give allegience to Dio isn't the wisest choice.

i loved his music but i know nothing of what it was like to work for/with him so i'll refrain from passing judgement on any of them. Vivian made the best records with Dio as far as i'm concerned & grateful to him and the rest of them for giving us those great songs.

Nothing tops the original Dio lineup and no matter what Ronnie said, he knew deep down that the early Dio fans wanted nothing more than the guys reuniting.

Dio Disciples are dull and boring. Goldy was never amzing live when Ronnie was alive. Check out footage of Wacken 2004. He struggles with simple songs. His solos have no rhythm or true melody. He compensates with mindless speed thanks to a lot of echo and delay.

And f**k, hearing Goldy f**k up Man On The Silver Mountain in 2006 is unforgivable. Goldy was a musical liability to Ronnie and Vivian was and is an assett.

And to this fucking day, Goldy cannot nail Vivian's guitar parts. Listen to him play wrongly the Stand Up And Shout solo as well as struggle with Gypsy and Straight Through The Heart.

When Ronnie fired Vivian, all I can say is that Ronnie must have been hallucinating when he thought Goldy would be the right replacement.

I saw Goldy live on several occasions and always felt he was going through the motions. Vivian explored the songs and live sounded even better!

How come Doug was able to do a far better job on one album and tour than Goldy had done??? Because Doug is a real guitar player who puts the work in just like Vivian.

Though the Doug Dio record is not as good as Vivian's records. But live Doug got the phrasing right and tone. Goldy is an awful phraser and has no concept of bluesiness that is essential in a great rock guitarist.

When Doug came in, Ronnie said he would never work with Goldy again and that Doug was a way better guitarist.

To anyone who is under any illusion who has the superior handle on Dio songs. Well, check out when Viv played Holy Diver at The House Of Blues with Steel Panther.

Dio Disciples will weaken the legacy and have no right playing material by Vivian, Jimmy and Vinny now that a better Dio legacy band has been announced.

Dio Disciples should do the records they actually played on and have the moral courage to rightfully leave alone the first three records.

Check out the first three Dio tours and that is the reason why fans got excited about the band. Yes, the band not just Ronnie.

If it was just about Ronnie, then why did fans boycott the Tracy G era????.
