METALLICA Dominates Rolling Stone's 'Greatest Heavy Metal Albums Of All Time' Readers' Poll - Sep. 19, 2012
Four of METALLICA's classic LPs were voted among the "The Greatest Heavy Metal Albums Of All Time" by the online readers of Rolling Stone magazine.

In announcing the results of the poll — which was launched last Friday — the editors of Rolling Stone wrote, "Metal fans are a very passionate bunch. They're also very opinionated, so when we asked them to vote for their favorite metal albums we expected a huge response. We also expected a big debate about the very definition of 'heavy metal.' Some metal fans say that groups like LED ZEPPELIN and GUNS N' ROSES are metal. Others think that's completely insane. We aren't here to settle these debates. We're merely here to count the votes."

"The Greatest Heavy Metal Albums Of All Time," according to the online readers of Rolling Stone magazine:

01. "Master Of Puppets" - METALLICA
02. "Paranoid" - BLACK SABBATH
03. "Black Sabbath" - BLACK SABBATH
04. "The Number Of The Beast" - IRON MAIDEN
05. "...And Justice For All" - METALLICA
06. "Reign In Blood" - SLAYER
07. "Appetite For Destruction" - GUNS N' ROSES
08. "Metallica" - METALLICA
09. "Led Zeppelin II" - LED ZEPPELIN
10. "Ride The Lightning" - METALLICA

Black Album over Kill 'Em All? Uh no...

Where's Priest "Screaming for Vengeance", Megadeth "Peace Sells" or "RIP"?

Also - I would not call GnR or Zep "heavy metal". But that's a Rolling Stone poll for you...anyone who cranks distortion on their amp gets labelled HM.

If you know anything about Rolling Stone magazine and their "Best Of..." lists, even though this one is a "heavy metal" one I am shocked, I say SHOCKED, Bob Dylan isn't holding 8 of the top 10 spots.

I think Far Beyond Driven sold well as a result of how great Vulgar Display was. Vulgar and Cowboys are great albums, the rest of Pantera pales in comparison to those two.

It's telling that - at least in the eyes Rolling Stone readers - the most recent album on this list is 21 years old, as if to say, "no 'metal' album since has been as good as those that were made in the 70's and 80's". I personally agree, but I'm an ancient 40 year old.

Ride The Lightning is too low.
Led Zeppelin isn't, wasn't & will never be heavy metal.
Neither are Guns N Roses.

My Top 10 (in no particular order)

Judas Priest - Painkiller
Black Sabbath - Master of Reality
Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Motorhead - Orgasmatron
Rainbow - Rising
Deep Purple - In Rock
Savatage - Hall Of The Mountain King
Thin Lizzy - Thunder & Lightning
Van Halen - Fair Warning
Death - Leprosy

Yes, I know half of those could be considered hard rock instead of metal. But hell, if they're including GNR & Zeppelin, I'm damn sure including VH, Thin Lizzy & Rainbow.

Ok, any list with multiple albums by the same band is bogus. Don't get me wrong, these are all great albums, but it just goes to show how basic the music taste of Rolling Stone readers is. Also, Led Zeppelin and G 'n R... both great hard rock bands, but not really metal. Metal tendencies at times, but not metal overall.

Of course the readers picked Metallica albums, that is the only metal band they know. It's not like they would actually pick any good metal albums like Mercyful Fate- "Melissa", "Omen-"Battle Cry" or Diamondhead-"Lightining to the Nations". All three albums are just as good if not better than any Metallica album.

I also have my own list and here you have it. Not based on my personal choice, but of what I think are the most important and necessary albums.
#1. Paranoid - Black Sabbath (no question, should forever hold the #1 spot on any greatest metal album list.)
#2. The Number of The Beast - Iron Maiden (Better than anything from Metallica, the end)
#3. Screaming For Vengeance - Judas Priest (their strongest release I think (and my favorite))
#4. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath (The 1st true complete metal album)
#5. Reign In Blood - Slayer (Very influental and helped create the extreme metal genre)
#6. Master of Puppets - Metallica (I like RTL more, but MOP is seen as the best)
#7. Ace of Spades - Motorhead (Just badass metal)
#8. Powerslave - Iron Maiden (Amazing work, and my favorite by IM)
#9. Appetite For Destruction - GN'R (One of the highest selling debuts of metal/hard rock ever, not to mention a fantastic album as well)
#10. Machine Head (Sick as hell album, fairly underrated on these types of lists)
Honorable mentions: Blizzard of Ozz, Heaven And Hell, British Steel, Master of REality, Led Zeppelin II, Ride The Lightning, Rust In Peace)

I like Metallica a little more than your average music fan, but to say that they have 4 of ther Top 10 Metal albums of all time? C'mon!

In no particular order, here's a list that I think maybe spreads more love across time & genres.

Black Sabbath- tie between Vol. 4 & Sabotage
Metallica- Ride the Lightning
Opeth- Blackwater Park
Testament- The Gathering
Slayer- Hell Awaits
Pantera- tie between FBD & TGSTK
Iron Maiden -might get some heat for this, but since it's my list, I'm gonna go w/ BNW
Bloodbath- Ressurection Through Carnage
Megadeth- Peace Sells
Nevermore- Dreaming Neon Black

...and I'm gonna throw in a few runner ups

Katatonia- The Great Cold Distance
Acid Bath- either album
Type O Negative- Life Is Killing Me
Sepultura- Arise or Chaos AD
Meshuggah- DEI

6. Faith No More - Angel Dust
7. Megadeth - Killing is my Business...

9. Judas Priest - Sad Wings of Destiny
10. Sepultura - Beneath the Remains

Just one guy's opinion. Everyone has their own sentimental reasons. Could fill it up with Maiden, Sabbath etc, but that would be as boring as the RS list!

The best metal albums are ones that changed music that came after them.

In no order:

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Motorhead - Ace of Spades

Van Halen - Van Halen (Eddie changed how everyone after him approached the guitar)

Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance

Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast

Slayer - Reign in Blood

Metallica - Mater of Puppets

Megadeth - Rust in Piece

Pantera - Cowboys From Hell

Alice in Chains - Dirt

Opeth - Blackwater Park

I know I left some out, but these albums changed how metal was approached after they came out.

3. Forbidden - Twisted Into Form
4. Slayer - Hell Awaits
5. Testament - The Legacy
6. Exodus - Bonded by Blood
7. Anthrax - Among the Living
8. Megadeth - Peace Sells
9. Pantera - Reinventing the Steel
10. King Diamond - Abigail

In defense of #9...that is when Phil seemed at his darkest & Dime wrote crazy sick riffs & Rex/Paul are in the pocket. See them play "Yesterday Don't Mean Shit" live Ozzfest & it felt wayyyy real! Simple riff but very brutal the way they pull it off. Yeah Cowboys & Vulgar rule but Reinventing they really did & totally brutal record! \m/

I totally fuckin' agree with what you said about RTS! In my own personal opinion, RTS is just as badass as Trendkill, and your reasoning is spot on. Nice to know there's at least one person out there who feels the same way that I do. Cheerz!

I don't like Zeppelin, but you can't deny their impact on heavy music. Sure, compared to the lastest EMPEROR album Zeppelin would sound like Shakira, but when those guys came out it was some of the heaviest shit around. Years ago the "Heavy Metal" tag could be used in bands as diverse as Foreigner and Cheap Trick and Aerosmith, meaning their sound was much rougher than conventionla pop. Respect bands for their contributions to the genre!

And Justice For All and The Black album?
Don't be ridiculous. To vote for those you can't even know your Metallica nevermind your metal. One's a self indulgent snooze fest and the other's a pop album.
And Zeppellin were never anything to do with metal. Ever.

That list says it all about Rolling Stones' readers. They've only heard of four metal bands.

Simply call the list 'The Greatest Hard Rock Albums Of All Time'.

Problem solved.

+ then you could include more Icon - Night Of The Crime, Sweet- Desolation Boulevard (US Version), Kiss - Rock 'n' Roll Over, Nazareth - Hair Of The Dog etc.

Other albums that should be near the top:

Dio - Holy Diver
Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance
Scorpions - Blackout
Accept - Restless & Wild
Saxon - Strong Arm Of The Law
Queensrÿche - Operation Mindcrime
Black Sabbath - Mob Rules
Manowar - Sign Of The Hammer

But that was more than a misspelling.

Anyone who puts their own personal best of list on here is trying to show they know their stuff and therefore has low self esteem or is so arrogant as to think their opinion means anything. Either way, it looks like you've got some work to do, my karma is already fucked so pissing off someone like you won't change shit.

It's only a reader's poll, so really who cares, but any list of the Top whatever metal/hard rock/heavy music/etc albums simply can't be taken seriously if the first Black Sabbath album isn't #1. That is the blueprint, everything else comes from there. No Sabbath, none of the rest of it even exists!!

What the fuck does Rolling Stone know about metal?

NOTHING.

Jan Wenner has been biased against metal since Sabbath came on the scene.

I actually like Rolling Stone...their political reporting is excellent (Matt Taibbi rules) but I don't read it for their coverage of contemporary music, which is generally garbage.
