METALLICA To Start Work On New Album 'Soon' - Oct. 1, 2012
METALLICA is scheduled to enter the studio "soon" to begin work on its next full-length album, tentatively due in 2014. Speaking to RollingStone.com, the band's guitarist, Kirk Hammett, stated about the status of the songwriting process for the next CD, "Right now, we're kind of preoccupied with dealing with this 3D movie that we shot up in Canada last month. So that's kind of taking our time right now — that's the priority, to deal with that. But once we're done with that, we're going to start hunkering down and putting riffs together. That's all going to happen soon." Asked if METALICA's next album will once again be helmed by producer Rick Rubin, who worked on 2008's "Death Magnetic", Kirk said, "I really don't have an answer about Rick Rubin, although his name certainly comes up."

Hammett was also asked about the recent RollingStone.com readers' poll where METALLICA's third LP, "Master Of Puppets", was voted the "Greatest Heavy Metal Album Of All Time."

"[That was] amazing," Kirk said. "Totally and completely amazing to me. That album, for me, is my favorite METALLICA album. We had been playing together as a band with that lineup for about three years. We were definitely peaking, and 'Master Of Puppets', in my opinion, was the sound of a band really gelling and really learning how to work well together. At the time, we were just making another album. We had no idea it would have such a range of influence that it went on to have. It was the first time that we could spend time in the studio and work on guitar sounds for a couple of days, really experiment with different sounds and overdubs. It was just a good time for me . . . and I played a lot of poker with [late bassist] Cliff Burton in the studio. We'd just play poker, wait for Lars [Ulrich, drums] to finish a track — which would sometimes be days — and we'd be bored."

"Death Magnetic" was METALLICA's last under its contract with Warner Music Group — where the band has been making records since 1984.

METALLICA frontman James Hetfield told The Pulse Of Radio about the end of the band's contract with Warner, "It's kind of a good feeling to feel that you're free from any piece of paper that binds you to something. But over our career, we've learned a lot about record companies, the goods and evils of the business and this and that, and we're not very focused on that right now. It is what it is, and when it becomes time for us to either renegotiate or shop around or do things ourselves or something like that, we don't know. There's nothing but options, which is great."

METALLICA's 3D movie will reportedly mix concert footage with a storyline.

The band is financing the project itself and has hired "Predators" director Nimród Antal to get behind the camera. Antal filmed METALLICA's three concerts in Vancouver, Canada for use in the movie.

The show featured a brand new 140-foot-by-50-foot stage that included what a post at the band's web site called "colossal components and striking visual elements spanning METALLICA's entire 30-year career."

So have you spent the last 26 years listening to their stuff since 1986 and continually whining about it? If you've been alive that long Cause I mean, if you have, you may want to find a less depressing hobby

1988 as far as GREAT album. Black album is a GREAT album but largely due to sound quality which is flawless. Also GREAT )ROCK( songs.

But first things first. Fire Rick Rubin.

They should just admit it and say "Right now, we're preoccupied with stuff no one really wanted in the first place, but we're just gonna see if we can cash in on it, and THEN, maybe 'soon' we'll start the writing process for a new album."

Yeah I'm not interested in this at all. Blame Rick Rubin and Robert Trujillo.

Why would they even be talking about Rick Rubin after how awful the production was on "Death Magnetic". People argue with me so much about this, and I don't know if it's that they're deaf or what the fuck, but that album had a terrible sound. Everything was too loud to begin with, then Lars (playing even more boring than usual this album, with no fills or anything) drums were just overpowering, to say the least. They could have probably got a few better takes on certain parts of Het's vocals too.

I'm not a Metallica-basher by no means, I've even enjoyed the Load/Reload era for what they were...but when a band "with so many options" and clearly no money problems can't give their fans a solid sounding record. I'm not even divulging into the songs or anything like that at all...there was some solid stuff and some less than average material as well, but a producer like Rick Rubin shouldn't even want his name on an album with a sound like that. It's like recording in a low funded home studio with a pirated version of Pro-Tools...that's what I hear when I hear that record. As much as I enjoyed a couple songs off of it, I find myself barely playing them because of this. Then again, they could get Bob Rock in there again and give us another St. Anger (Volume 2) "Angel Pissed-Off".

Everyone acts like Rubin is a member of the band writing all the songs or something. I liked DM a lot. It might not be 80's thrash but it was definitely a heavy metal album that slipped back and forth between thrash and normal old school metal. I loved the production. So I don't get everyone's problem with it.

For a band as big as they are, there is no need to wait that long in between albums. Ya ya i know, touring non-stop blah blah. Younger bands do it all the time but even bands as old as Metallica are nonstop touring but yet they are putting albums out every other year. The rate Metallica goes in the studio, it is as if it takes them one week just to lay down one lead guitar part or James getting the words "Yeah!" or "Baby!!" to sound just right. You saw Kirk's word about MOP being voted at the best heavy metal album of all time. Come on man! To know that that was during a peak in their evolution where they made an album every 2-3 years. And now its every 5-6 years?! Just goes to show they are a have-been band. One in which people will throw money at them.

COMMENT | In regards to the new album's sound

I want to make a couple of points here about the band and where they have been going over the past 20 years. I used to be a hardcore metallica fan, but this was back in the late 80s and early 90s. The 1st half of their career can be easily compared to this second half, but with one exception and I will explain that in a bit. I believe the very top of their career was the Black album. They made it big with that one. Damn near perfectly produced album and live stages where they have never gone before. And it is because they TRIED and succeeded. You saw their evolution from KEA to the black album. One could even compare AJFA to St. Anger or DM in regards to the production, but still AJFA was well within that great evolution they had. NOW to the second half of their career with Load to DM. Wide commercial success for both Load and Re-Load as well as Garage Inc. They rolled with it during that time. They had the money, more fans, new fans, new sound blah blah. After that...it went downhill. Jason left the band. It took them 5 years to record a new album which was utter shit with hardly no radio play. Hell, Bob Rock had to play bass on the album because they were too damn lazy and pissed off at eachother to even try to find a bass player until after the album was recorded. Dont get me wrong, Rob is a good player. After that crap album came out, it was more touring for 4 years. Back in the studio for over a year to release DM. Better than St Anger in the aspect of getting back to the heaviness and even having solos in the songs. Where St. Anger was void of ANY solos. Yet again the production totally sucked ass. The engineering, the mixing was HORRID. Crank them levels up as high as you can! Which brings me to the point of all of this. Total fucking LAZINESS. And I blame it mostly on Lars and James. Mainly Lars though. And dont even bring family into this issue. They arent the only band with kids and wives. Lars cant play the drums like he used to and they just roll with it. They simply do not care anymore. They are a band that comes out every night to play with big dollar signs on their foreheads and the fans eat it up. They know they are failing too. Lulu? Gimme a fucking break. Only thing I have seen of these guys that is anywhere near metal, was when Kirk came out a couple of times to join Exodus in some old songs of theirs which he co-wrote and when Metallica played their 30th Anniversary shows. To see them actually play the FULL version of The Four Horsemen was amazing and when Dave joined them on the last show. Other than that? Been nothing but complete shit in my opinion since 1993. Which was the last time I saw them live. Know who opened for them then? Suicidal Tendencies and Danzig. Just shows a more clear image of the past 30 years while the laziness haze has blinded most of their fans.

I agree to a large extent. I think a turning point can easily be found though with the court case over Napster. Lars got an absolute frying from the media and fans (whilst being in the right - always supported him on that) and they tried to compensate by going in with the younger crowd. Does anyone remember the MTV Icon show? They had Limp Bizkit, Korn, Snoop Dogg and Avril Lavigne doing tributes instead of what the fans wanted to see which was the likes of Slayer, Megadeth, Anthrax and Testament. The last good song they did was "I Disappear" which is kind of ironic. After all that, they didn't release for ages, made a documentary, had kids, had breakdowns and kicked Jason out. They then get a producer to pretty much write the songs and play bass for the worst metal album ever produced, and then hire a big gun for the next album to appease the fans which lead to a terrible sounding effort which was quite lazy for a so-called "Classic Metallica" record which its artwork harked back to. Lyrically, Hetfield is awful these days and he needs another few singing lessons. Lars needs to practice more, or at least get fit. Kirk is still a god. And as for letting the new bassist Rob write the majority of riffs for DM..? Please. Sheer laziness. Don't get me started on Lulu. The stupid thing is that they are still amazing live and blow the balls off every other band in a festival line up. They still KILL live, but only because they play their old stuff and have a great visual element. Which leads me to another point which is that they don't actually have to create new stuff. They have enough of a back catalogue to fill a three hour set and leave some fans disappointed because they didn't hear their favourite song. I have wanted "Eye of the Beholder" to come back, and they STILL haven't played "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" live as they can't remember how it goes. Laziness. I don't like the post-DM releases as they are stripped down, full off fuzz and lyrically terrible. They have enough people telling them they are amazing and their new stuff is great, but for die-hards like me, it's not been anywhere near enough since 1991 (and I was far too young when that came out, and am thus a retrospective). And, what's more, everyone bought St. Anger and DM and so they still get their money. Also, signing their early artwork away to Vans? Shoes? That is just a middle finger - isn't there a Monopoly version? I can only assume St. Anger is "Old Kent Road". Selling out their artwork for cash on rubbish products that have nothing to do with anything? The more I write, the more I get annoyed. Is Lars really the guy that did the insane drumming on "Battery?" Is Kirk the guy that wrote the utterly bonkers guitar parts for "My Friend of Misery?" - that solo is mind blowing. And is Hetfield really the guy that came up with the lyrics for “One”, not to mention the riffs for songs like "Blackened"? The answer to all those is no. And what on earth happened? And why should we tolerate it?

These clowns are getting lazier when it comes to studio albums. I mean Trujillo has been in the band 8 years and they have only put out one (1) studio record featuring him!

Live, Metallica are still a powerhouse, but as a studio recording act they are a joke. 'Death Magnetic' was a decent record, but it came on the heels of garbage records.

2014... DM came out in 2008.. so now we're talking about 8 years between studio albums? Pathetic. Why even bother?

I mean the next one will come out in 2022, lmao?

Metallica should just put out new songs here and there for free, they have enough money.

"so umm,, we're uh gonna start umm... y'know... thinkin' about maybe considering, y'know.... doin' another fuckin' record, y'know. I mean... there's a lot of stuff on the plate right now and umm... I don't want to make any promises. Everybody's real busy... wife & kids, books and DVD's and all kinds of nutty stuff like that y'know?. But umm.. once all that stuff is out of the way, we might listen to a couple of the 8000 riffs James has on his itunes that he mentioned a couple months ago. Then, once I've destroyed all those riffs, Kirk has a few riffs I can ignore. Robert probably has 2-3 albums worth of ideas that could be used for a new Suicidal Tendencies or Infectious Grooves album, but I'm sure I won't like any of that for the new 'Tallica record either. That'll cover the 1st 6 weeks. Most bands record whole albums in 6 weeks, but Metallica needs 6 weeks of shooting down ideas before we can start tuning my drums. So "soon," in it's most abstract definition, is when Metallica is gonna start writing new material. I mean, it's on the horizon, were just not sure we've milked the last record of every last drop yet, so we're just kinda waiting to see what happens on that. We do know that we loved the sound of that last record, so we'll make sure it sounds pretty close to that. Rick Rubin and I get along great... he doesn't really like being there in the studio, and I don't really like practicing drums, so our relationship is great. We both hate the same things, y'know?

I agree w/ a lot of what EpicFailGuy wrote, them being a great live band, but lazy. I also agree with MonkeyTime's idea that they should just put out new songs here & there for free.

At this point, my biggest gripe w/ Metallica is that they seem to throw away their opportunity. Any other band in the same position, be it Meshuggah, Machine Head, Gojira, Opeth, (insert your favorite band here) would almost certainly put out more music and involve fans way more than what Metallica does now.

I have no issue's with Rubin being involved. No matter what anyone thinks, they made a comeback with DM.
Rubin was one of the reasons why. He is an influence during Pre production. With some luck, he'll dissuade them from making the Black album 2.
The sound engineer as we all know fucked up the sound of DM. Saying that, Metallica allowed this. There is no way they would have allowed that if they thought it sounded shit.

Pre production? Corey Taylor said the bastard came in and did his stuff without including the band in on anything. Half the time he'd work from home and shit. He seems like a big man with a lot of respect who can do what he wants. I give Metallica all the credit for the songs themselves, but the terrible quality goes to Rubin. I really hope they don't use him again...or Bob Rock, lol.

I'll produce it, if they write great songs, it'll sound great no matter who does it (obviously you know what I'm saying). If not, then I don't really care, as a fan of a certain band I always look forward to new material from them otherwise what's the point.
