IRON MAIDEN Bassist's 'British Lion' Solo Album: First-Week Sales Revealed - Oct. 3, 2012
IRON MAIDEN bassist/founder Steve Harris's solo/side project album, "British Lion", sold around 3,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to enter The Billboard 200 chart at position No. 138. The CD also landed at position No. 3 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

"British Lion" was released in the U.S. on September 25 via Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). Mixed by Kevin Shirley — whose credits include IRON MAIDEN as well as Led ZEPPELIN, JOURNEY and RUSH, among many others — the CD, which features Harris alongside vocalist Richard Taylor, guitarists Graham Leslie and David Hawkins and drummer Simon Dawson, presents a different side of the bassist's musical visions.

Asked where the impetus for "British Lion" came from, Harris told Classic Rock magazine, "How it started was that Graham Leslie came to me with a cassette of songs — which shows how long ago it was! — and I thought they were really good, so I said I'd try to help his band do something. I ended up managing them and producing them and writing with them, although I kept that fact under wraps, to the point where even some people in the band didn't know. Anyway, when that band imploded I thought, 'Well, I've got to do something with this,' because I thought the songs were so strong."

He continued, "Over the years I've kept in touch with Richie and Graham, and then Richie was working with another guitarist called David Hawkins, who's a really talented guy, and so we started writing songs together. So on the album there are six songs written with Richie and David, there's one with just me and Richie, and the others are me, Richie, Graham and a couple of other guys that were around at the time."

"British Lion" comprises ten songs that Steve and his collaborators have been working on between IRON MAIDEN tours and releases and is described by Harris as "'70s-influenced, British-sounding hard rock." "I'd say it's more mainstream rock than metal... and quite commercial… but good commercial," he said. "There's all kinds of stuff going on, with nods to THE WHO and UFO and some classic British rock bands, but it's not the progressive rock album some might be expecting."

On the topic of why this is the right time for a Steve Harris solo album, the IRON MAIDEN bassist told Classic Rock, "Because it's ready, it's finally, finally ready. The guys have been waiting very patiently for years for me, and it's been frustrating at time, but what can I do?! I'm so busy with MAIDEN. People have already said to me, 'Are you going to do this instead of MAIDEN?' and I'm like, 'Of course not!' MAIDEN is always going to be the priority — always has been and always will be — but it's interesting and exciting to try new things."

He added, "On the early [IRON MAIDEN] albums, most of the songs are mine, but as we've gone into different eras with different people writing, there's been more and more collaborations. And I think it's been important for MAIDEN to do that rather than have me dictating everything. But I have bags full of ideas, so many that I couldn't record them all in my lifetime, and I tried out a few different things on this, because I had the time to do experiment."

"British Lion" track listing:

01. This Is My God
02. Lost Worlds
03. Karma Killer
04. Us Against The World
05. The Chosen Ones
06. A World Without Heaven
07. Judas
08. Eyes Of The Young
09. These Are The Hands
10. The Lesson

Steve Harris will guest on the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" with host Bob Coburn on Wednesday, October 3 at 8:30 p.m. PT / 11:30 p.m. ET. Fans are encouraged to speak with Harris by calling 1-800-344-ROCK (7625). The show will be streamed on the "Rockline" web site for two weeks beginning the afternoon after the live broadcast.

The singer does not "suck" he is an excellent vocalist!
Just because he is different than most singers you are used to does not mean he "sucks".
Quite frankly I find his voice a welcome change form the
standard "Cookie Monster gargaling glass" style vocalist!

NO - I didn't expect Maiden, but I also didn't expect a weak vocalist and demo quality recording which at best sounds like a rough mix (put bass ALLLL the WAYYYY up, drown out drums and guitar! Ugh). And let's not forget what's most important - the songs are BORING!

Based on that singer, it sounds like Steve is pining for the Blaze Bayley days.

I love Maiden and I love Steve and his bass, but I can't get into this album at all. It's not TERRIBLE...it's just nondescript. I listened to it once, heard some really good bass playing, and that's all I got out of it really.

And let's face it: Maiden IS Steve's solo band in a lot of ways. He collaborates with Adrian and Bruce (and Janick and Dave to a lesser extent) but he approves everything from the song structures to how Bruce sings to the lyrics to the song lengths to the mastering and mixing.

I'm way more interesting in if/when Bruce does another solo album with Roy Z, and whether or not Adrian is going to play on it.

Although I've gone on record by saying Maiden is NOT a solo band, it's way more a solo band than this is. This is Steve joining a bad band which he has been talking about for over 20 years (literally). My guess is he just wanted to do something different and away from Maiden. I can understand that - but to market it as a solo album is absurd.

I think he's just right for the material, not that it's unfair to criticize him. The songs are more uplifting kind of songs and sometimes that's what people need / want. I happen to like the CD a lot. It's got to be 4 stars. And if you buy the physical CD, you also get an .mp3 version for the ipod, as well as a 2dB louder version for those who like their music recorded at a louder level. 3 versions (counting the CD) are included.

Like I said, it's not MAIDEN, but it does have Steve on it, and the bass is incredibly great (no surprise there). It's even got a lot of endings like Nicko likes to do sometimes.

You can enjoy something that not all about Death; I enjoyed my 1st listen very much. Peace.

I gave the entire album a fair listen and can conclude that it is an utter pile of steamy shit. The singer is beyond bad...production is horrible..Their record label is obviously trying to spin this as a steve harris album to try and sell more copies

Yes this is not maiden...not supposed to be..I get that...but that doesnt mean it doesnt suck REALLY bad

2/10

I expected some amazing prog-rock-metal with songwriting the caliber of Steve's most epic pieces with Maiden.

Now that would have been something!

This pseudo-solo stuff is just miserable.

A good singer could have made it much, much better. But either way, the album would never have been great. The material is just very average. And some of the things are just annoying (chorus on Karma Killer for example)

Happy for Steve though, he probably needed to do this. But Iron Maiden will always be the true Steve Harris solo project.

The singer is Harris-unworthy. The music itself isn't bad really, but combined with the vocals it's just too boring. I have streamed the full album twice and this is a no-buy. Sorry Steve mate.

I don't think the problem is the singer. The problem for me is the production of mr Kevin Shirley.Like the flat production of the last Iron Maiden records he also made this one sound boring. Too bad since it got some potential, same as the last I M records. What happened to take some chances productionwise instead of same old same old

I bought it at Best Buy... "World Without Heaven" is my favorite. I dig it. I like the singer... I'm a singer myself and, at first, the vocals were not what I was looking for... He's not Bruce. His style reminds me alot of Steve Overland...very smooth... I find the production "flat" too... UNTIL I listen to it through head-phones, via my computer. Then, it sounds much better... I wonder if that's because everything is recorded on pro-tools nowadays, on COMPUTER. At any rate, it was $9.99 and I'm enjoying it. It's different. The production is much more pleasant to my ears (on headphone at least) than recent Maiden releases.

That psychologically speaking purchasing a physical copy makes one more receptive or more willing to give the content a chance. You are holding a physical product in your hand, you won't just toss it out...I wouldn't I just paid for the fucking thing. I'm going to listen to it till I like it type deal. When one listens to it passively through something like Spotify you virtually have nothing invested in it so its easier to dismiss...or maybe I'm trying to justify to myself that my favorite musician on this planet put out an album that doesn't suck. Fuck it. I'll just blame the singer, he ruined a decent album.

I thought the album was quite good. I was very excited about this because I'm a huge Iron Maiden fan, but I was guessing that it was going to be bad. I was wrong.... I enjoy it quite a bit. I also think the singer fits the bill pretty good for this type of music.

BiorythmicDrift... I totally agree. I've always said that that's why the ghettos and housing projects are totally run down pieces of shit. if one is given something for nothing, and they never had to work for it, they won't take care of it. They have nothing vested in it. If one had to work for something and payed for it with their own money, they will WANT to take care of it.
The same idea is here with downloaded music... it becomes a little valued commodity and people care less about it.

BiorythmicDrift: Excellent point. Of course, a poor product will still be ignored (even if you've spent money on it). But an average product may get a few more chances.

…the songs. The musicians and singer sounds ok to me, but I don`t think the songs are good enough. Harris need Adrian Smith! Just listen to the Maiden albums without Smith. When Bruce left as well IM sounded "dead" on the two albums with Blaze.
