RUSH And DEEP PURPLE Nominated For ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME Induction - Oct. 4, 2012
RUSH and DEEP PURPLE are among 15 finalists for induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame's Class Of 2013.

For the first time, the public gets to vote alongside the artists, historians and music industry insiders of the Rock Hall voting body. From now until December 5, fans can vote on RollingStone.com for the nominees they'd like to see inducted. The top five acts will comprise a "fan's ballot" that will count as one of the more than 600 ballots that determine the Class Of 2013. The results will be announced in mid-December.

The April 18, 2013 event is set for Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, marking the first time the ceremony will be held in the city since 1993. HBO will tape the show for broadcast at a later date.

"The definition of 'rock and roll' means different things to different people, but as broad as the classifications may be, they all share a common love of the music," stated Joel Peresman, President and CEO of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Foundation. "This year we again proudly put forth a fantastic array of groups and artists that span the entire genre that is 'rock and roll.'"

In an official statement, RUSH said: "We are honored to be among the nominees for this year's Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. We are especially thrilled for the many, many dedicated fans to whom this nomination is so very important."

Artists are considered for inclusion in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame 25 years after the release of their first recording.

Nominees for the 2013 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame:

* ALBERT KING
* CHIC
* DEEP PURPLE
* DONNA SUMMER
* HEART
* JOAN JETT & THE BLACKHEARTS
* KRAFTWERK
* THE MARVELETTES
* THE METERS
* N.W.A.
* PAUL BUTTERFIELD BLUES BAND
* PROCOL HARUM
* PUBLIC ENEMY
* RANDY NEWMAN
* RUSH

Important note: Only five of the artists will make the final cut and be inducted into the Hall.

In a June 2012 interview with RollingStone.com, RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson was asked how he felt about having yet to be inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. "Honestly, we really, really don't care about it," he replied. "It's someone's thing, and they can do whatever they want with it. They can have whomever they like. It's their thing." He added, "It's a little bit different here in Canada. We've received awards that mean an awful lot more to us than being in the Hall Of Fame. We got the Governor General's Performing Arts Award a couple weeks ago. That's really the highest accolade you can get in this country for the performing arts, and it's recognized nationally, and I felt so proud as a Canadian to be in this esteemed group of artists that have been there for the last 20 years."

When asked if he and his bandmates would show up at the ceremony if they were eventually chosen to be inducted into the Rock Hall, Lifeson said, "I think we'd consider it at the time and just see where we're at. I mean, you don't want to be rude, and we're Canadians, and we find it very difficult to be rude as much as we'd really like to. [laughs] So we'd probably have to look at that one, if it ever came. I know there must be pressure from their end. We keep going on and getting more popular…"

He continued, "Look, there are a lot of other bands that should be in there before we should be in there... If the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame doesn't want us in there, that's fine. I don't care. It really, really doesn't matter at the end of the day. It's probably better left the way it is. There's more controversy for them and for us."

Speaking to VintageRock.com, DEEP PURPLE singer Ian Gillan recently stated about the possibility of one day being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, "You've got to take this with great respect. We don't have anything like that where we come from, over in Europe or anywhere else. It's an American thing. It's so completely different. In America, you're great and really do support and show appreciation for your artists, musicians, film stars, whatever it may be. And you give them visible signs in accolades and all that sort of thing. And you cheer and…you're very supportive. It's the completely opposite in the U.K. They want to kill you. [laughs] The moment you get up to any form of success, they just want to wipe you out and deride you. It's part of the culture. At the same time, we've just focused on the music."

He added, "I honestly can't tell you whether or not we should be there or not. It could be because of the fragmented nature of the band that they wouldn't know how to deal with it.

"To us, with the greatest respect, it doesn't mean a lot although it's rather like an award in the U.K., if I were to get one. I probably wouldn't accept it. But then again, after a week of thinking about it, I would accept it because it would be on behalf on the family and friends and everyone who supports the band and who's looked after us after all these years. It's kind of a recognition of everyone. But whether we deserve it, I don't know. I always get embarrassed talking about this stuff."

Former PURPLE member Glenn Hughes recently said of the Hall Of Fame: "We know the people in charge and we know how they think. It's become like a joke in a way. Gene Simmons [KISS] will talk to me about it, and go on a rant and all, and he is exactly right. But I'm not gonna hold my breath. DEEP PURPLE, KISS, YES and especially RUSH should obviously all be in."

But I know Jann Wanker and his Rolling Stone buttboys will find a way to keep Rush out.

That said, the most deserving nominees are Rush and Deep Purple (natch). NWA and Public Enemy are also very deserving in my opinion, and I think it'd be totally awesome if Kraftwerk got in. Here's some quick takes on the other nominees:

Donna Summer will likely get in through a sympathy vote - every RRHoF ballot has some artist that just recently passed away - not that she doesn't deserve the nomination, though.

I'd love to see Heart and Joan Jett get in, but I don't think they'll make the grade.

Albert King? Well, there's always going to be some blues guy getting inducted every year no matter what. Know your roots, people.

The Marvelettes were nominated because well, they were a Motown group - that's about it.

Chic, Kraftwerk, and The Meters all fall into that category of bands whose influence on other bands and genres far outstrip their record sales.

And then there are the WTF selections. Paul Butterfield Blues Band? Who were they? Procol Harum were what, two- , maybe three-hit wonders at best? Randy 'I'm Dreaming Of A White President' Newman? WTF? I'm sorry, but singing novelty hits like 'Short People' and writing songs for Pixar movies does not qualify for the RRHoF. Weird Al Yankovic is more deserving for enshrinement than Randy Newman.

(and believe me I respect all the above artists) there is a number of bands in that list that aren't even remotedly close to rock music such as Donna Summer (wtf?), Chic, The Marvettes, Public Enemy (wtf again), even Kraftwerk...And some other's body of work (Heart, Joan Jett) can't even be compared to Rush's or Purple's....It makes you wonder, isn't it? Either way i hope that common logic will prevail in this matter (nah...).

it's nice they finally got nominated but they don't need to worrt about acceptance speeches as they will be beaten out by the likes ofpublic enemy and chic. as long as the idot and his boyfriend are in charge of who gets in then they will not make it. just change the name to the critics hall or the music hall as half the acts they put in have nothing to do with rock.

I hope Rush rejects this just for the sake of being able to do so. But seeing as those guys are a pretty stand up unit, there classiness would prevent them from doing so.
You guys have been the foundation that has stood the test of time. Your fans know just how inspiring you have been through out the decades. You dont need the RRHF, but you deserve it

Big surprise and I am happy they should be there, I some of you say no. They are hugely influential and one of those bands that while not huge in the US, have a bigger impact outside of America. Best class of nominees in a long time - Rush, Deep Purple, Heart, Procol Harum, Kraftwek got my vote. Joan Jett, while I like her, she should go later. Albert King, influential on rock guitar players so I can see that even though he's blues (and I am a fan of his big time). NWA and Public Enemy, the only two rap bands I can listen to, two major pioneers, and actually the two best rap bands in the history of the genre, but they are not ROCK AND ROLL. R&B bands, not either.

First, I am a Rush FAN. Not a weekend warrior, 'I hate keyboards' fan. 25 years of listening, 21 years of never missing a tour. Each album has been better than the last. Every live show is better than the last. Clockwork Angels is fantastic, and this years live set list, finally stripped of all the radio songs, is perfect.

What dignity is allowed to these guys, after years of this, to get nominated with NWA and the like? And I'm a NWA fan too. But THEY ARE NOT ROCK AND ROLL! Rush has purposely been kept out of the Hall of Shame for very polital, greedy, music exec reasons. Nobody has done what these guys have done. Not the Stones, Zeppelin, Metallica. Nobody. Rush deserve more than the Hall of Shame. The Hall of Shame doesn't deserve Rush.

I really hope they politely turn it down. If it were up to Mr. Peart, I'm certain they would. They are gentlemen however, so this isn't going to happen. I have boycotted the HoS museum in Cleavland for years. Been writing the HoS president for years concerning Rush. The HoS is trying to save face with the real fans. Rush know their real fans. We are at every show, every tour, buying every shirt and album.

This would have been special and important to the band and fans years ago, but now it's a bit of an insult. The fans are the real Hall of Fame. The Hall of Shame and Rolling Stone have purposely excluded Rush for weaker, simpler, and let's face, shitty bands. So allow me this.

FUCK THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME. AND YOU TOO ROLLING STONE MAG.

Holy shit are you people some ignorant assholes. If there's any name on that list you don't know, you're a retard. This is one of the few years I've seen where EVERY nominee not named Randy Newman deserves to be in.

However, the RRHOF is a joke and always has been. The baseball hall of fame is valid, as there's excellently objective statistics to use. The RRHOF, on the other hand, is purely subjective and therefore crap. Public Enemy and NWA absolutely deserve to be in. The Chili Peppers and Madonna and Metallica do not.

About damn time!

Deep Purple and Rush deserved to be in years and years ago. This is a no brainer.

I understand the backlog of artists deserving the induction around the mid 90's, when Deep Purple was first eligible, but the last ten years? Inexcusable. Jon Lord should have been a part of this.

And the same for RUSH. They should have been in 10 years ago. No doubt good Canadian boys like Rush will accept their nomination, and likely induction, with class.

How Madonna, R.E.M., Steely Dan, Talking Heads, etc. etc. made it in before is baffling.

And I hope the year Priest, Maiden, Motorhead, and KISS make it in, the guys on the nominating committee all shit their collective pants.

They don't care! Why should they? I love Rush and their attitude is awesome. Same with that BS when Lance Armstrong got stripped of his Tour De France wins. You can't change what happened. It's just a meaningless trophy. The win is what counts. You can't take away or add to the hard work or experiences of someone by taking away or giving them an award.

Personally I'm embarrassed for Deep Purple and Rush that the Hall of Fame is lumping them in with the turds in that list.

Would be great to see Rush & DP make it, just because. Hall is a joke either way. Nice to see them finally hearing the noise. Glad to see they are still nominating non-rock artists such as Public Enemy, NWA & Chic. My Vote: Albert King, Deep Purple, Heart (admittedly I like Joan Jett more, but Heart is more deserving), Paul Butterfield & Rush. But worst of all is the recent death of Jon Lord. Shame.

The ever revolving door of plastic packaged, corporate manufactured 'artists' may well see to the biased panel of so-called music experts (Wenner and co.) change their prerequisite of 25 years to, 'must have been an artist for at least 25 days'.

Too much shit has been has been heaped on fans of rock music by this travesty of a corporation known as the rock and roll hall of fame Too many bands have been snubbed time and time again - the sick joke has gone on too long.

Oh - and real nice - nominate Deep Purple (finally) now that Jon Lord has passed away. Are we supposed to be grateful that Wenner has at long last 'allowed' Deep Purple to at least be nominated?

Fuck off.

Jim Farber of the NY Daily News called Deep Purple "a secont tier metal band."He also finds Public Enemy sonically innovative this guy is their music critic.

Decline it, rUSh. They really, really do NOT care at all about this stupid a** HoF. I wouldn't want to be in there next to those crazy inductions anyway, it's a big let-down and nothing more. Peace.

Anyone who says metallica is not deserving is out of touch........ One of the most influencial bands of all time. countless bands list metallica as a huge influence, including Pantera, Nirvana , smashing pumpkins, korn, slipknot, and countless rock/metal acts from 80's on.

Rush, Deep Purple and Heart, along with the othes don't need to be enshrined in a hall of fame or approval from Rolling Stone to validate their legacy. Never the less, they will probably be gracious, take the high road, and accept the honor with more class than the Hall of Fame has displayed. I echo the sentiment that it is a shame that Jon Lord won't be there to accept the honor. His hammond organ should have a special place, hell no one rocked the keyboards like Mr. Lord. I have my tickets for December to see Rush in Houston, and look forward to seeing them again. My 1st concert (Permanent Waves in Seattle), my son's first concert (Snakes and Arrows), and plan on seeing them anytime they hit town in the future. It's all about the music, and these bands rocked, no matter what the music writer elites claimed. Hope this indicates that other deserving bands will get their props.

Rush and Deep Purple what took so long! We have Madonna in there what a joke! Donna Summers, The Marveletes good artists but Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame? Yet you leve out Grand Funk Railroad, Dio, Rainbow, Kiss and the list goes on and on ......

Sure Heart, Joan Jett should be there. Paul Butterfield Band, Procol Harem ..... of course ....

The Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame is an embarrassment ..... Grand Funk Railroad still holds the record for selling out Shea Stadium the fastest .....
