DON DOKKEN: Why 'Broken Bones' Is Final DOKKEN Album - Oct. 5, 2012
Leslie Michele Derrough of GlideMagazine.com recently conducted an interview with DOKKEN frontman Don Dokken. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

GlideMagazine.com: You have said that people should not listen to [the new DOKKEN album] "Broken Bones" once, but to listen to it twice.

Don: Yeah, if you listen to it once, you won't grasp the gravity of what we were trying to accomplish. The second time you realize that all of the songs are kind of different and they have their own flavor and their own vibe, their own groove. It's not just nine songs the same old thing. I really worked hard. Jon [Levin, guitar] and I spent eleven months and wrote over thirty songs. Some of these songs we rewrote three and four and five times. I really pushed myself on this one. It's our last CD so I said, this has to be it. I want everything to be stellar.

GlideMagazine.com: Why is this your last DOKKEN CD?

Don: I want to do other projects. I want to do other things. I think I've said what I had to say in the DOKKEN style of music and I want to stretch out a little bit and do other things.

GlideMagazine.com: Some musicians don't want to leave their comfort zone.

Don: No, I'm the opposite. I always want to try something different. I'm going to start working on an album with Michael Schenker. It's going to be fun. He's a great guy and he put out a few acoustic CDs. I saw him last month in Bulgaria and he says, "Don, we've always been talking about doing an acoustic record." And I said, "Yeah." So he gave me a couple of his albums that are just instrumental and I said, "Why don't I take them home and see if I can write lyrics and sing over the songs?" And it's coming out really great. It's not rock, it's a kind of chill record.

GlideMagazine.com: When all the things were happening between you and [former DOKKEN guitarist] George Lynch, with the turmoil and the tension, did you ever think about giving up on this business and just saying, "I'm done. I'm tired of all this fighting"?

Don: No. I mean, I just thought, I'm done, I'm tired of playing with George. Because here we were at the top of our careers, we're becoming superstars, and every day we should've been kissing the ground and saying, "Thank you, God, for this blessing that we've been so lucky to have a successful career and you've got one guy in the band that's like completely always trying to make it unpleasant and miserable." It was really sad, you know. He ruined my dream because he just complained constantly. I think it was just his personality. Some people thrive on misery and I don't. And that was our big problem, with George and I. So yeah, when I broke the band up in 1988, I said, "I just can't take it anymore." We're doing great, we're playing stadiums, hundred thousand people a day, and every day there's a problem, every day there's complaining, every day there is drugs and arguments and it just made it a really unpleasant experience. It's kind of sad.

GlideMagazine.com: How long have you been playing with Jon Levin?

Don: Ten years. Jon is an angel. We get along great. That's why he's been in the band ten years. Who would have thought my attorney would become my guitar player? And we get along. I think it helped cause him and I would just sit down and he'd play a solo and I'd say, "That's great, that's great, and how about this little part here? I think you can do it better." It was a very positive creative experience. You know, he'll tell you, I used to make him really nervous on the first couple of records 'cause he hadn't played in years. After [playing with] Doro Pesch, he'd become an attorney and he said, "You made me nervous." Reb Beach once said, "I love playing in DOKKEN, but I wouldn't want to make another record with them," because I'm too intense in the studio. And I said, "Yeah, Reb, but you came out of it a better guitar player." I'm very intense when it comes to making music. To me, it's passion and if the song's good then I don't like it. It's got to be great.

GlideMagazine.com: And that's the way you've always been?

Don: Oh yeah. I mean, we thought we had six songs done. We wrote six more then went back to the first six and I said, we can make these songs better. And we did. And it's hard, but it had to be done.

If Michael Schenker and Don can work together without calling it quits. Both can be stubborn, but if they can pull it off it can be really amazing.

Fingers crossed they can pull it off.

He really believes he's the John Lennon of his generation or something. Every interview with him reads the same. He's delusional to believe that Dokken was ever relevant without the original line up. He knows he can't make albums for his 50 fans anymore because its to expensive. So he's putting Dokken away until a reunion with Jeff,George and Mick can happen.

"This tour/album will be the last" is just a dumb thing to say. Its doomed to make you look bad because you have to hold that for the rest of your life. Its hard to look into the future, but who would have thought some of the bands like Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, plus another 100 would still be going in their 50's and 60's. A lot can change, who knows where you'll be years down the road.

If Dokken does do another record, no matter how long it is from now, this statement will come back against him.

Did Ozzy's 50 "retirement" tours hurt him? No. How about Bowie's? Also no (although it looks as if Bowie really has retired from touring at this point).

I will say this is the best sounding Dokken record I've heard without George - and the best one since their glory days. It's a pity he and the guys didn't work this hard before.

Most lead singers are egomaniacs. My favorite part of the interview - Jon putting down his coffee cup with gusto and apparently looking for something to do while Don goes on and on.I expect that whatever he does with Schenker will reduce his ego for a least awhile (and probably be pretty damn good). I'd prefer that Schenker do more with Barden or McAuley (who's been killing it live with Schenker) but Schenker's muse is mercurial.

Jon's runs are really really good. He still doesn't have the fire and spirit of George but no one does

David Bowie will book a comeback tour when he needs money. They all do.

An egomaniacal lead singer? Now that's unusual. Maybe Don's voice wouldn't be shot if he'd talk about himself a bit less often.

He says he's doing a Tool meets Slayer thing after Dokken, but now says he's doing a 'chill' acoustic thing with Schenker.

When he talks about George, he doesn't say one positive thing. George gives clear examples of how Don wronged him. Don just calls him a crybaby.

Maybe he was miserable because of YOU, Don.

He's just now getting around to trying other things and spreading his wings? Hasn't he had like almost 30 years to do that? Should've done that a long time ago when the Dokken name still meant something in the marketplace.

And sorry, no Lynch = nobody cares.

Don Dokken=Piece of filth. He lied about the reunion, he tricked Lynch into coming on that Metal Show to make it appear that Lynch had reunited with the band so he would be on the next tour. He then says Pilson isn't interested, then Pilson joins the others in a new band! Don Dokken is no better than Rachel Bolan.

as a dokken fan all I can say is good luck as I and I am sure most of your fans will not be buying it. at this point in your career do you really think I want to hear you spread out musicly? you also said you wanted to do slayer type music which just makes me laugh. again dokken fans not going to buy it and fans of that type of music hate what you do now and are not going to embrace it either. but whatever makes you happy until you and the other guys in dokken realize that the only way any of you will make any money in music again is to attempt a reunion tour and at this point I doubt that will go over well either.

How much simple does it get that 'skull & bones' for an album cover, in an age when awful ones make it?

Dokken was always Don's band, just like gnr, where singers claim is a band, but they have the last say.

Look, Don cannot sing the dokken material properly anymore. There is nothing bad in accepting that....you don't see michael jordan on the court anymore; kobe will be retiring eventually. There is nothing wrong with this as it is the natural flow of a career where youth is required to deliver the goods. He did some incredible work and I will always respect and appreciate him for that. Under Lock & Key (except for Slipping Away) is a killer hard rock record and one of the best in my opinion.

Good idea to hang it up, Don! You finally learned NO LYNCH = NO DOKKEN! Nothing against the players you had replace him - they all are good BUT it is the chemistry and make up of the songs you and Lynch put out! You may not have liked each other but the end result was incredible! You really havent had that since.

To set the record straight, I met Don 1 time and Lynch about 15 times since 1990. George has ALWAYS been cool, even when he was having a very bad night. One night in Tampa around 2005, Lynch was opening for Yngwie. Yngwie's manager was a DICK and pissed George off bad! I happen to catch him out at the tour bus and you could tell he was steaming. He then turned around, grabbed a beer, talked to a few of us, signed our shit and then we took a blow up doll and strung it TIGHT to Yngwie's bus with a beer bottle up the cooch! George was super fucking cool !!!

Don on the other hand was stand offish, couldn't find the time to sign anything and just wanted to walk around with a drink in his hand.

NO LYNCH = NO DOKKEN !!! Don, you should have joined T&N ! Maybe you learned - break the current Dokken up, take a break and either join T&N or reform the original DOKKEN.

LYNCH=GOD

I met George at a "Believe in Music" record store (back in the day when they actually sold RECORDS) in Grand Rapids, MI around the time of Lynch Mob's first album and everyone was cool and gracious EXCEPT George. He was a fucking dickbag to me and the other fans who were excited to meet him. Needless to say, we all left without buying a copy of the new album or getting it signed. I am sure Don has his big ego moments too but George definitely had his. To this day, I still hold him in the lowest light.

The last couple of Dokken albums have SMOKED; Broken Bones is a VERY solid CD with plenty of good songs. Don's voice isn't 100%, but cut him some slack - he isn't a spring chicken any more, and he's learned his lesson about singing in too high of a key - and he is a master at finding interesting harmonies to match his voice. The lyrics for the Broken Bones are extremely well written, and the production values are top notch. The musicianship on Broken Bones is 110%, with no weak links (Jon is killing the frets on this CD). Bash hair metal, Don, and / or Dokken all you want - you obviously weren't a fan in the first place, and that is OK. The Dokken -vs- George Lynch debates are pointless - I personally prefer Jon over George, as George now plays absolutely erratic solos on nearly everything nowadays, with zero melody. His new 4 track EP is very good, but he tailored back the odd solos and played with harmony - the new T&N CD has 3 good tracks; the new Dokken CD has better singing, better lyrics, better sonics..
