KISS Frontman PAUL STANLEY: 'There's No Substitute For Collaboration Within A Band' - Oct. 9, 2012
Legendary rockers KISS will release their 20th studio album, "Monster", on October 9 through Universal Music Enterprises. Described in a press release as a "12-track, straight-ahead rock 'n' roll album," the CD features collaborations among all four members — including co-founders Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons and longtime members guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer — in an album that shows the band at the top of its game.

"Monster" is the group's first studio album since the band's 2009 smash success, "Sonic Boom", and was also produced by Paul Stanley with Greg Collins at Conway Studios in Hollywood, California, and The Nook in Studio City, California.

Speaking to RollingStone.com, Stanley stated about his decision to produce the CD himself: "Democracy in the studio is overrated. What you wind up getting is compromise on everybody's part, which means that nobody has their way, and that means nobody wins, including the fans. I thought it was really important, and in my mind it was a deal-breaker — if I wasn't going to produce the albums, we weren't going to do albums at this point. Somebody had to set parameters and boundaries and voice expectations. To make sure everybody was committed, some things had to be spelled out."

He added: It didn't change anything. I think we had more fun. All the cards were on the table and everybody knew what the game plan was. We're more productive. I never thought being the producer was being the dictator. It means being the director and being the coach. It's a way of keeping everybody focused on the goal, and also having final say. Everybody can be in the same car, but somebody has to drive.

"It's important to make sure [KISS] is everyone's primary focus. One way of doing that was to say 'no outside writers.' We recorded everything facing each other in a room. There's no substitute for collaboration within a band. We all like each other and enjoy each other's company and respect what each other is capable of doing.

"I didn't get the producer role by default. I read some comment from Gene [Simmons, bass] that he doesn't have the patience anymore, so he was happy to have me do it. The truth of the matter is, there wouldn't have been any albums if it had been any other way."

Asked what his plan was for "Monster", Stanley said, "I wanted to make an album that really harkened back to why I got into this in the first place. I was lucky enough as a kid to spend most of my weekends at the Fillmore East. On a great night, that was like a Holy Roller evangelical church. When rock and roll is done with that fervor, it's close to gospel. That's what I wanted to go for with this album — passion as opposed to perfection. James Brown wasn't perfect. Motown, THE BEATLES, THE [ROLLING] STONES, [LED] ZEPPELIN, early Elvis — I wanted to maintain the essence of it, getting a first, second or, if you really had to push it, a third take and record on analog tape and capture the intensity of what you're doing, and not compromise it."

FYI - If you want the bonus song Right Here Right Now you have to download the record from iTunes....Best Buys site is wrong, all you get from them is the original 12 songs, a 3D sticker/cover and no booklet w/ lyrics!

Monster was sold out at Target. Went over to Best Buy and two fo the people in front of me had it in their hands.
Listened to it all the way through. Its much better than Sonic Boom. I can't figure out why they chose Hell or Hallelujah. Its one of the weakest songs on the album.

I got the 3d cover, booklet with lyrics and a code for "monster army" or some shit that is supposed to give you first dibs on tix for the next tour. Didn't enter it yet so I don't know. But that's OK for 12 bucks. I'll get the bonus track somewhere down the road. Hell...if you didn't even get a booklet something's wrong.

as a 40 yr ole , and a fan since i was 6 way back in the 70's i can tell you this is the second time around i didn't not run out to by a kiss record upon the day of its release. 1st being sonic boom.... i want be buying it period..i think ace said it best in his book, i quote there's is nothing that is sacred to them guys , end quote.. and they clearly show that even when they say kiss will continue even after the 2 remaining members are long gone , and this is where i got off the bus ..when i saw to them it was ok to continue on with the 2 bozo's that are trying to portray the original members , to me its disrespectful to a longtime fan and i don't like it but what can one say .anything these guys do in the studio today will never stand up to what they created in the past, these will never be classics like cold gin, parasite, deuce tears are falling...,i can go on..

I could go both ways with this record. On one hand, yeh, KISS will never return to the classic Cold Gin days, and will never really be KISS without Ace and Peter. On the other hand, the production on the new record is pretty good; Stanley usually does a good job (remember the band New England?). And Monster does have its moments song-wise; you can tell there were no outside writers. I'm actually surprised how good Monster is.

Just got off the phone with Best Buy. They have confirmed that the version I am receiving has the special booklet, sticker, Kiss Army membership but no 13th track. I don't give a shit about those other things. I don't need a sticker. I am not in high school anymore. I don't have a locker to stick it on. I just wanted a physical fucking copy of the album with "Right Here Right Now". I ask if they were going to get the correct version in and of course they had no information. But I am not blaming the Rep I talked to, she was just doing her job by relaying the info. Looks like it is going back to the store when it arrives. Yeah, I am that petty over one track. I hate itunes. Most downloads are in 128 kbps and sounds like shit.

COMMENT | KISS - Monster = Brilliantly Done Album...

I'm a classic rock fan, obviously. And aside from the 'classic 6' KISS albums, there are only a few KISS albums post 1977 that I love. They are 'Creatures', 'Lick It Up', 'Revenge', 'Sonic Boom'...and now, in my Top 5 KISS albums of all time; is 'Monster'.

Brilliantly done hard rock and kicks the hell out of their last album which I really liked, by the way. 'Monster' is heavier, melodic, hard pounding and relentless. And it's getting near unanimous acclaim from fans and critics, to boot.

I'll add this to the shelf next to 'Van Halen ADKOT' and 'Rush ClockWork Angels' as the best releases of the year.

Well played KISS...well played.

RickSteve....according to Kissonline Best Buy copies will not have the extra song, just the sticker as the extra, which is ok, but like you I wanted the extra song...should get both no matter where you buy the record....iTunes has it but you have to buy the whole record, which I won't do for one song

@RickSteve....FYI - Almost all iTunes downloads are 256 Kbps now...still not cd quality, but they are getting better and I read somewhere that they are going to increase to 320 in the next few years.

Not happy with line-up, other merchandise, and album cover choice... but had to buy it (only thing I do buy, unless I find on super clearance at spencers, etc).
After 4 listens - better than I thought it would be. Hell or Heleluyah still strong track, couple others getting close. Thayer and Singer tracks suck balls.
Bought at Best Buy, they had no idea why 13th track not on it, waiting for info from "corporate office". Bet best they'll do is offer free iTune download. 3D sticker can fit in front of any jewel case for cover, on-line code gives me free keychain, membership card, and rubber bracelet.
Walmart has a " 'Zine Pak" for $14.88. Includes 64 page magaZine. Will probably buy this version, and keep the Best Buy sticker and free online crap... return the rest.

returning the Best Buy CD. Sounds like others are returning Best Buy purchase because of 13th track. Hopefully that will send them message that not everyone wants to download.

Damn right... I buy a CD for the music. Not special booklets that I may skim through once or KISS army membership that will give a discount on merch when I rarely wear band shirts anymore. I want more songs. Hell, I would have bought the Japan version if it had it "Right Here Right Now". Instead the Japan CD has a live version of "King Of The Night Time World"...yay

They could have taken shortcuts and got Desmond Child or Max Martin in there to co-write, but they kept it all within the band and they recorded on analog tape. "Hell Or Hallejulah" sounds cool, and I'm happy for them. Good move, guys.
