THIN LIZZY To Release New Album Under Different Band Name - Oct. 10, 2012
After a very successful two-year run with the current lineup, THIN LIZZY have made a decision to not release a new album under the THIN LIZZY name.

Commented guitarist Scott Gorham: "Out of respect to [late THIN LIZZY frontman] Phil Lynott and the legacy he created, we have decided that we should not release a new album under the THIN LIZZY name. It was a very difficult decision as we put a lot of time and effort into rebuilding the THIN LIZZY brand over recent years. Releasing a new album was the only way to continue this success.

"We all know how much Phil meant to this band and the fans.

"We have written 20 songs that we all feel very strongly do the band and THIN LIZZY name credit. We believe Phil would have been proud of them.

"We always knew a new record was a touchy subject with some people and as such really want the quality of these songs to be heard by everyone without any judgment or prejudice. To that end, we have decided not to release these songs under the name THIN LIZZY.

"We want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement over the years and to all our fans. We will release this material soon and you will be hearing some great new music with the classic THIN LIZZY sound intact. We will announce future plans early in the New Year."

Added frontman Ricky Warwick: "Our plan always was to put out new music to keep the name THIN LIZZY alive and fresh with all the band's fans — old and new.

"Nobody respects Phil as much as I do and singing his songs for the past two years has been an incredible honor and something I will never forget.

"Our plan was to always keep the band on top of their game, with great shows and great production to honor all that was Phil Lynott and his iconic body of work.

"Without a new album to gain new press and keep the momentum we have built up over the past two years, we are worried the THIN LIZZY brand and all it stands for will diminish to a point we would never want to see. Therefore, our regular touring as THIN LIZZY will cease at the end of this year after our European tour. I do want to stress that this does not necessarily mean we will never play together again as THIN LIZZY. If there are options for other parts of the world, in territories that this line up has never visited then, we may still play odd shows in 2013 and beyond if people want to see us."

People want to see the closest thing to the original as possible playing the classic songs. I don't think people are going to be pissed if there's a few new ones peppered in there.

It just seems stupid. Building up a brand from scratch with the sound of an older band is remarkably difficult.

Those situations aren't even comparable. Phil Lynott was the main songwriter/musical visionary behind Thin Lizzy. Without him, there is no band. With Alice in Chains, Jerry was just as involved in the songwriting as Layne was, if not more (Layne had very little to do with the self titled album).

Exactly in fact Jerry wrote almost all the music and over half the lyrics except what "Angry Chair" and a few others... I would never take away anything from Layne(Best Singer ever IMO) but to compare the 2 is just madness...

Nah. Phil Lynott remains a Towering Giant within the legend of Thin Lizzy. It's only right that they don't use the Thin Lizzy name for the new songs as Phil sadly wasn't around to be a part of them. It's a sound move overall.

I'm not a huge fan of this band. I'm one of the people who knows them because of "The Boys Are Back Town", and thats about it.

Having said that, I read BM everyday, and have read the articles about TL. Even though I'm not a TL fan, I was disgusted at the idea of continuing the name with almost all new members. I applaud their decision to move forward with a new name, and wish more would follow.

It ptobably cuts their sales in half, at least, no matter what name they choose.

I thought they sounded great when they opened for Priest, and they properly honored Phil. By doing this however, you can eliminate the words "cash grab" when discussing them. Which cuts out about half the insight of many blabbermouth posters.

COMMENT | Band name suggestions: WILD IRISH ROSE...or....EMERALD

I think the most obvious choice to re-name Thin Lizzy would be:

EMERALD

A tip of the hat to one of the greatest Thin Lizzy songs, a song that has the classic Thin Lizzy guitar sound and a song that represents Ireland.

Another obvious choice would be BLACK ROSE , the name of a classic Thin Lizzy album and kind of a "Back In Black" type of tribute to Phil Lynott , but I think it would be even cooler if instead of BLACK ROSE, they changed it to WILD IRISH ROSE.......kind of as a way of getting over the buzz kill of Phil Lynott's death while still representing the Thin Lizzy spirit and Ireland in a general way...

The name change also is a sign that the new "Thin Lizzy" album is so strong that the band wants to be able to play more than one or two songs and not have them seem like "bathroom breaks"

With the name change, they can play 8 to 10 new songs and 8 to 10 THin Lizzy classics.

Cool decision for Thin Lizzy to contiue under a different name.......totally different case than AXL carrying on as Guns n Roses , I think if the new material is killer , then it will sell MORE than if it were branded "Thin Lizzy"

So who's the 2nd guitar player ? Vivian Campbell or Richard Fortus ? (FUCK YOU HATERS !)

1st day buyer here....

Those are both great actually. I'm actually really happy they're still at it, and definitely glad the studio album will be under a new name. Both Wild Irish Rose & Emerald are great! Hopefully they haven't already been used. Black Rose has I know. Long live Downey & Gorham!

"You people"? I don't care one whit what Axl calls his band. There's a bazillion bands (including Rainbow, Hawkwind, Motorhead) that had only 1 original member. I've never understood all the b.s. about it.

Heaven and Hell was one of those remarkable one offs where they changed the name but everyone knew what they were in for. In the U.S. Thin Lizzy is still woefully below the radar of most (short of Boys being played in Toy Story). This isn't going to help them here.

I'll buy the album regardless because I think that Brian Downey is an underrated treasure but I just think that re-making the brand will be a tremendous undertaking - and one that will have a very hard time gaining traction in the States. I'd love it if Robbo or Midge Ure were back - and Ure can write a song - but I'm more than willing to give these guys a chance.

Somewhat OT: those Rollins Band albums with Mother Superior backing him had a lot of Lizzy influences and was some killer shit.

Kudos to these guys. Finally, a band with just a few guys has gotten it right.

Give one of their Live in London discs a listen...Ricky sounds great and the band is tight. I'll buy some new music for sure, and hope to catch them live in '13.

We're not going to release the album under the Thin Lizzy name because we're basically breaking up after we spent the last two years building up the name that we're very proud of and would never want to do anything to tarnish which is why we really wanted to release the album as Thin Lizzy because it represents Thin Lizzy perfectly and we will still release it soon but not as Thin Lizzy which means we won't be able to continue which is what we wanted because we have so much respect for the Thin LIzzy name which we've worked so hard to rebuild for the last two years and since we will not release the album that you will be hearing soon which we are so proud of as a Thin Lizzy album we will not continue to tour even though we've worked so hard which means as you can clearly tell we're not breaking up and we will always not be Thin Lizzy!

Any relevant band who replaces their frontman should change the name of the band. Van Halen was not Van Halen with Sammy Hagar. Skid Row isn't Skid Row without Bach. Thin Lizzy is no exception, either, and neither was Anthrax.

IMO, the only band in history to get away with doing this was AC/DC.

If you're only a casual acquaintance of Thin Lizzy - maybe you only know "The Boys Are Back In Town" - It's a bit like only knowing Metallica through "Enter Sandman".

You need to do yourself a favour and check out the "Thunder and Lightning" and "Live and Dangerous" albums and i guarantee if you're a serious rock/metal fan it won't be long before you own the whole Thin Lizzy back catalogue.

Their influence on 80s metal and beyond (Metallica & Maiden...) cannot be understated!!

these guys didn't spend 2 years touring as Thin Lizzy (heresy in my opinion) and then just "decide" to retire the name. Lawsuit threat from Lynott's family most likely. I don't for a minute think it was 'artistic integrity'

Just call it Thin Lizzy II or pick a famous song title, the label will probably put a visible "Ex Thin Lizzy" sticker on the CD, and that should do sales-wise.

is how many people think there's some sort of purity to be had here. That renaming a band is of value. In fact to a touring musician it's just the opposite. You want to put food on the table you tie yourself to the act that made you or you are best associated with. If you want to be booked in small clubs and make no money that's great as long as you have other sources of income.

The supreme arrogance of fans telling people who do this for a living how they should go about things when they aren't professionals is amazing.

Music is quite possibly the toughest area to make a dollar and you guys act as if they had some kind of safety net which they do not. In the artistic community - whatever form of art - you do what you can to make it.
