BLACK SABBATH: New Album Update - Oct. 17, 2012
Original BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi, singer Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler are working with producer Rick Rubin on their first recording project together in 34 years. According to Metal Injection, 15 songs have been written for the CD, with 12 making the final cut and the additional three serving as bonus tracks for different special editions. The band has one songtitle confirmed: "God Is Dead".

Apparently, Iommi completed all 15 guitar tracks during the band's sessions in England earlier this year, and judging by the way most bands record, that would mean drums are done as well. Ozzy and Geezer are working to complete the tracks in five-song increments, with the first five being worked on currently at Shangri La Studios in Malibu, California. Ozzy is tracking vocals, with Butler writing all the lyrics.

As for Iommi, Ozzy told SiriusXM Liquid Metal DJ Jose Mangin that he spoke to the guitarist recently and he is in good spirits and recovery is coming along very well from his cancer scare earlier this year.

Iommi, Osbourne and Butler discussed their new album in a video interview posted at NME.com. Osbourne dropped a clue about the set's title, hinting, "Next year, 2013, is a good clue to what we're going to call the album."

As for how Rubin influenced the band's approach to writing together again, Butler explained, "He sat us down, put the first album on and said 'listen to this', imagine it's 1969, you've just done that, what would you do next?"

Iommi added, "It's taken on the flavor of the old stuff in the way we put things together, but with a different look on it."

The project suffered a blow earlier this year when Iommi was diagnosed with cancer, although he said that playing the warm-up show in Birmingham, was a boost to his spirits. "It was great," he said. "Going through what I've gone through over the past year has been like living in a different world — being onstage and to get that (reaction from the fans) is just fantastic, it really boosts you up."

BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward announced earlier this year that he was declining to join his former bandmates for its scheduled 2012 dates, as well as the recording of a new album, due to a contractual dispute.

He also allegedly had his lawyers direct SABBATH to remove him from photos of the band posted at the official BLACK SABBATH web site "so as to not give the public the wrong impression about his involvement in the current BLACK SABBATH lineup," according to a statement issued by the band's publicist.

Geezer Butler issued a lengthy retort at his own web site, writing that Ward "hadn't told any one of us he was having contractual problems, and frankly those things are worked out between our representatives, and never between the four of us let alone in public."

Butler added that the band did not expect to make a lot of money from its Download appearance and planned to donate the proceeds from the Birmingham gig, saying, "Apparently, this wasn't acceptable to Bill's representatives, they wanted an amount that was so unrealistic that it seemed to have been a joke."

In addition to Download, the members of SABBATH played at Lollapalooza in early August in Chicago, their only U.S. gig. The rest of the scheduled SABBATH tour dates were played by Ozzy and billed as "Ozzy & Friends."

I'm glad Ozzy is hard at work writing his own lyrics. How did this guy have a career when he's been helped along by co-writers since day one? [insert pop-artist reference here].

i think this is just utter bullshit that ward isnt a part of this.
although i really hate to say this but
iommi isnt going to be here for too much longer and these geezers cant get their shit together for one last go at the sabbath machine.
i really dont get why someone cant just let it go just for the music and the fans.
its fucking disgusting and a puch in the face to all the fans out there that deserve a proper sendoff to one of the greatest bands ever, period.
rubin being a huge fan as well ,should have some kind of way he could convince the other guys or whomever to get ward on the album and not this talentless twat clueftos.
rubin is actually taking this clueftos guy seriously!!
can you beleive that?
he was just in promo pics with the whole band represented to announce a new album and tour and now he is allowing ward to be replaced by someone of far less talent and experience.
i feel betrayed by this and taken advantage of....im going to still buy the album and hopefully love it,but for this to be a factor at this stage in their career and at the age of almost 70 years old is just absurd. HOW DO THEY NOT SEE THIS ISNT RIGHT!!???

Let me get this straight... the band has been putting out music for you since the 60's in some form or another... they're in their late 60's, early 70's, as you said... the guitarist is trying to beat cancer... yet you feel that you "deserve" a proper send-off from them?

They don't owe you a fucking THING, and if you can't be happy with all that they've already tried to give you - and are trying to give you now - then you're not a real fan. Just a self-centered cock with no appreciation for the band who started heavy metal.

with the due respect gatlin, if the bands or musicians were "giving" me music I literally would have millions of cds , despite somehow music have to be apreciated different to other consumer products since its art I think its not much different from a point of view than purchasing an item or pay for a service, you complain for a bad haircut and dont thank the hairstylist for what she "tried" to do, you complain with a hot dog seller for a rotten sausage and dont appreciate what he "tried" to give you, somehow its an exchange of product service , im sorry for the raw and cold opinion, they have become rich or at least wealty for what they have done and they have to worry (I think) for the quality of the music.

not trying to argue with you... peace!

No shit sherlock. My whole point is that they get away with this shit because people will "still buy it". Which is exactly what you said. Way to make a stand. I agree with you 100% about Bill being just as important as any other member. It is NOT the original Black Sabbath that I fell in love with without him. Unlike you, I will NOT spend another penny on them as long as Bill is being screwed. You make it sound like you're taking a stand and then say you're going to PAY THEM ANYWAY? Who's the fucking idiot?

I thoroughly enjoy both Ozzy and Dio related sabbath. Come to mention it I enjoy Born Again and Headless Cross a lot as well. :)

Jesus Christ...Sabbath have been playing JUST the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath intro since the 1997 reunion.

Why? BECAUSE OZZY CAN'T FUCKING HIT THE HIGH NOTES.

I'd rather hear just a taste of the riff than Ozzy butcher that great song. Some Sabbath songs are easier to sing than others, and SBS is one of the hardest.

Because Ozzy doesn't write lyrics or music. Geezer wrote all of the Sabbath lyrics in Ozzy's time and Bob Daisley has done the majority of his solo work. I thought that was common knowledge. Are there actually people who think Ozzy wrote all of the lyrics and music on Bark At The Moon? Just a ploy by Sharon to give Ozzy all of the writing royalties and publishing money.

none of them need the money,so why did it have to go down this way? are tony and geezer really not able to just try to make this happen without all the lawyers and bullshit by contacting someone theyve known most of their lives???

I saw the original reunion with Bill, so why would I want to see them with an impostor on drums??

and that goes for the album too, and can anybody believe that they had to steal a song title from the lyrics of an Opeth song?? lol

Theres no way this can happen without Tony or Geezer, so I assume that, Tony more than Geezer obviously can say "I dont wanna do this without Bill, lets make it happen!" Where is their point or power?, thats why I dont understand. It makes me question the motivation of the whole project. I understand that Ozzy doesnt make any of his own decisions, but even his Puppeteer would have to acquiesce if the whole thing was gonna collapse

Bill Ward's signature is EVERYWHERE on the early stuff. He belongs there, no question.

But... he was always the subject of cruel practical jokes. Now he feels he's disrespected on the financial level. He made a vow, wants respect as an equal peer. OK. But then you have Geezer saying he didn't tell anyone anything and asked via his lawyer for an absurd amount of money.

Who knows?

I love the people bitching about Ozzy not writing the lyrics when he had arguably one of the greatest lyricists in rock history in his band. Daisley and all who followed all contributed solid contributions as well. Why fix what was never broken?

BTW, Ozzy did write the lyrics to The Writ, and they were pretty damn solid as well.

I like everyone else would rather see Bill Ward back, but that just ain't the way it is going. Just because he doesn;t want to be in the band at the moment (for whatever reason, I doubt we will ever know the full story) doesn't mean the other three guys should give up. I'm really looking forward to this album. It will rock with or without Bill.

Now that Bill has already brought the fans into their business, he may as well show a copy of the "unsignable contract" to the public. It would be interesting to see if he's getting the very least or just less than Ozzy and Tony. If he and Geezer are offered the same amount, why isn't Geezer whining? It's very sad that these guys couldn't work all this stuff out before announcing the reunion, but in the end it will just be sad for Bill.

I think Bill assumed that if he turned down the first offer, they'd renegotiate but instead they just moved on without him so instead of getting less than he wanted he's getting nothing.
The new album is being made without him and they will tour without him, so he's obviously not as irreplaceable as he hoped. Does anyone really think the album can't be great just because he's not drumming on it? Seriously?

The first reunion at the first Ozzfest or whatever in the 90s was sans Bill Ward. It was so fucking awesome seeing the real Sabbath for the first time I could barely contain myself.

Sure I'd rather see them with the original four guys, but Sabbath fans are no stranger to lineup changes. I mean, c'mon! There's been like 32 different people in this band.

I can't wait to hear the new music even though it won't sound like vintage Sabbath without Ward.

Clufuetos can play the drums though. This is all just a distraction so no one focuses on how shitty Ozzy's voice has become.

This is going to sound like ‘Psycho Man Part II’ without Ward's vital input and orchestration and I would rather listen to Urkel sing the Macarena over and over again than listen to that shit.

Sorry gentleman. I will be passing on this. Oh, and $haron can drink my piss.
