TIM 'RIPPER' OWENS Says He Was 'Shocked' To Learn Of VIVIAN CAMPBELL's New DIO Tribute Band - Oct. 27, 2012
On October 26, "Tales From The Stage Volume 1" author Michael Toney (web site) conducted an interview with acclaimed vocalist Tim "Ripper" Owens (DIO DISCIPLES, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, BEYOND FEAR, JUDAS PRIEST, ICED EARTH). You can now watch the chat below.

On the recently formed DIO tribute band featuring former DIO and current DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell and fellow original DIO members Vinny Appice (drums), Jimmy Bain (bass) and Claude Schnell (keyboards) along with singer Andrew Freeman:

Owens: "I'm a bit shocked. But I could care less what [Vivian] does. I wish he would have probably done something, I guess, or had good things to say about Ronnie when Ronnie was alive. So it is shocking. It's shocking also that… I'm friends also with Vinny as well, but Vinny pretty much knocked [DIO DISCIPLES] for doing [the same thing]. [Editor's note: During an April 2011 appearance on the "All Hail Hair" show on Fightin' Words Radio, Vinny Appice was asked what he thought of DIO DISCIPLES going out on the road and paying tribute to Ronnie James Dio. "I think it's disgusting," he said. "I mean, why are they even doing it? Plus, [Ronnie has] not even been passed away for a year. And, you know… It's kind of… I don't know. It's kind of weird, man. It's weird."] And from the looks of it, we're definitely doing it for the right reason and we're celebrating Ronnie's legacy. And I think they are as well. It's shocking, but I'm glad, to be honest. You can't do too much of this for Ronnie. I just worry about, and focus on, DIO DISCIPLES, really."

On his current status with Yngwie Malmsteen:

Owens: "I've kind of just gotten so busy doing solo work. I mean, I just [did a tour of] 25 shows in Europe and I came right from that and did this [the DIO DISCIPLES U.S. tour], and I'm off to South America, doing 15 shows right from this. You know, I had a choice this summer of [doing] a couple of shows [with Yngwie which conflicted with DIO DISCIPLES' schedule], and I picked DIO DISCIPLES. I had to pick something and I start doing something, I've had to say 'no' to a lot of Yngwie stuff, because I'm just busy. We've [Yngwie and I] had a great relationship, but I just don't see how I could fit it in anymore. But us two, I really enjoyed being with him. He's a funny, funny guy to be with. We'd laugh and laugh. And he had nothing but good things to say about me, and other people, really. He never talked bad about anybody."

This is looking like a big mess in the making, they all were in Dio at one point, except for all of the singers.....

There are 6 people in the current Dio Disciples lineup and 3 of them played with DIO.

Why don't you stop calling yourself "Ripper" when you're not in Judas Priest and you had nothing to do with that song?

And I'm getting sick and tired of people saying "the right reasons" all the time. I could give a flying fuck what someone's motivation is. Either it's worth seeing or it's not. If it's good I'll support it, if not I won't. It's that simple. I don't care what your fucking "reasons" are!

Agreed. Wow! Why is is Ripper upset about this?? Does he plan on milking Dio's music the rest of his life?? He is a great singer, why doesn't he get with a group of equally talented musicians and start creating his OWN legacy. Viv on the other hand was a BIG part of Dio's actual legacy. He wrote the killer riffs for two of my all-time favorite metal albums, Holy Diver and Last in Line. He EARNED the right to do what he is doing!

No they're not both acceptable.

"I couldn't care less" is the correct term. It means that you are at a point where you could not care any less. It would be impossible for you to give any less of a shit about the situation.

"I COULD care less" means that although you don't seem to care that much, it's not at the very end of the extreme yet. "I could care less" says that you COULD actually care a little less than you currently do.

Its like saying "I couldn't spend more" on my car. You are broke, and can't spend anymore on it.
"I could spend more" means that you may have already spent a lot, but you still have some money to spend on your car.

The only complaint I have on the Vivian Campbell version of "DIO" is the vocalist. It sounds like it could be amazing if they had the right guy up front. There was some truly amazing material written by the original band so I can get why THEY would want to celebrate what THEY wrote and participated in. It makes a lot more sense to me than a group of guys who played on the tail end of the Dio saga. It would be like if Eric Singer, Tony Martin, and Neil Murry parading around as the members of Sabbath when the best case scenario would obviously be Geezer, Ozzy, and Bill. The moral of the story is, Vivian should fire that bell end they've got for their band and get Ripper! I think even aside from the Dio tribute aspect that band would be outstanding!

...shocked his manager didn't get him an audition with Vivian's group.

I don't have a problem with either group doing what they are doing, but certainly having the classic Dio lineup playing the music they created has a bit more validity than what amounts to former sidemen and talented fans playing the music.

Start a decent band and, by all means, play a couple of Dio songs as a tribute, but being a "rockstar" in a "all-cover-band"? Wow..heading towards the hall of fame now...

Because surely he's made no money with that other band he's been in for 20 years, yea? I'm too lazy to research, but it's no stretch to imagine he's likely the most successful artist in either project.

How many times did RJD try to "make it right" with Vivian while he was alive? You people trying to make Ronnie about to be some kind of christ like figure are idiots. I liked them both and I could care less if they didn't get along. I want to hear the original band, which I saw in concert in '84, play music again. It has nothing to do with whether Vivian and Ronnie liked each other. Get a grip!

he is shocked like the rest of us that these people who had nothing to do with DIO for whatever reasons for over 20 years suddenly decide to cash in on the name after Ronnie died. nobody denies that you were part of the band and played on the first 3 records but despite what you claim you played Ronnie's music not the other way around. if you had anything to do with it then why have haven't done anything that remotely sounds like that since you left the band? Whitesnake was as metal you got after your time with DIO. now after years of slagging the music that made you famous you decide to reclaim it? call it what it is a cash grab. sure ripper and the others are in it for the money to but they were at least friends with Ronnie and have the blessing of his widow.

Viv's bored with Leppard, but after touring each year since 1999, playing the same setlist night after night, can you blame him?

Don't bash Ripper about him having been in Priest. Not one of us would have passed on that opportunity if we had the chance.

I'm bashing TIM OWENS for using the name "Ripper" which was just a total publicity stunt nickname to try and sell him as the new Priest singer to begin with.

Ironically, he sings Dio a hell of a lot better than he did Halford. Maybe we should call him Tim "Stargazer" Owens!

Recently joined Thin Lizzy, and like Ripper says, he never had a nice thing to say about RJD.

When it comes down to seeing one Dio tribute or the other you have to look at a few things. Sure both are going to charge and make money. No one can tour without doing so. But some things do stand out. 1. Vivian has ignored that music for over 20 years but now he is all about it. 2. Vinny calls a Dio tribute Disgusting but is now in one? I call bullshit on both. The most important thing when listening to any Dio cover is the singer. Very few singers can come close to doing justice to Ronnie's songs. I can't imagine Vivian finding a singer worth listening to. One that will come close to Tim. Dio Disciples even show greater tribute to Ronnie by having 2 singers. Showing by this that no one singer can replace Ronnie. They could spit that extra money but they do this out of respect. Dio Disciples are digging deep into Rainbow, Sabbath, and DIO songs. Will Vivian and Vinny do this? I'm guessing the answer is no. You will get a mix of the first 3 albums. As great as they are I want to hear a real celebration of Ronnie's music. I want to hear a real singer and not some weak ass bum. As mush as I would like to see if Vivian can actually still play I'll watch him on You Tube and go see Dio Disciples live. I'll go see the guys that have actually respect for Ronnie.

I'll pay the musicians I want to see play live regardless of whether they worship Ronnie or not. So in that sense, I'd like to see BOTH bands in concert. I hope the singer for Last In Line sounds good singing those songs. I know the band is awesome!

Actually, these other factors have everything to do with what legitimizes a true tribute. Which albums they played on means nothing. Eg: When they put the Heaven & Hell band together, Vinny Appice was clearly the more deserving drummer since he played on most of the Dio era Sabbath material & his heart was in it & Bill Ward wasn't interested (as usual). Just because Bill played on H&H (the album) didn't automatically make him the better choice or give him more right to be there.

The same applies here: Dio Disciples mostly comprises of the remaining Dio band mates who stuck with him through thick & thin for many years (even during the H&H period) & for far longer than the original 3 album line up Viv was in. It's also a well known fact they hated eachother for the last 20+ years so regardless of whether he's had a change of heart or would've made amends had Dio survived (too late & impossible to prove), this just doesn't seem right especially since Dio Disciples did it 1st, is endorsed by his wife/manager & official website & this just looks like band wagon jumping.

Dio played with many musicians over the years, they can't all form official tribute bands, that would just cheapen his legacy. There should be no competition amongst them, they should all just have turns playing/guesting with Dio Disciples.
