QUEENSRŸCHE Drummer: 'Our Fans Are Gonna Be Really Pleasantly Surprised' By Next Studio Album - Oct. 27, 2012
Robert Williams of Metal-Rules.com conducted an interview with QUEENSRŸCHE members Michael Wilton (guitar), Eddie Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) prior to the band's headlining performance at the South Texas Rock Fest in San Antonio, Texas on October 13. You can now watch the chat below.

On the band's current setlist:

Wilton: "A lot of this is just bringing songs that we haven't played in a long time, for various reasons … It's just about kind of listening the fans more and listening to what they wanna hear and kind of working the things out. A lot of these songs we wrote a long time ago. So we had to go back and re-learn a lot of it."

On whether re-visiting some of the band's early material will influence QUEENSRŸCHE's musical direction going forward:

Wilton: "Well, a lot of it is keeping a common thread in your roots. Granted, we wanna expand on what we've done, especially the first seven albums, but also we've grown as musicians and we kind of like to keep a modern edge to it. Just as we've progressed as musicians and in our musicianship, we like to explore that as well."

On whether QUEENSRŸCHE has been writing new material:

Jackson: "Yeah, we've been doing that for quite a while — I think it's last half a year — at least with [new singer] Todd [La Torre, also of CRIMSON GLORY] and Parker [Lundgren, guitar]. But [even] before that, we're always constantly writing. But we got Parker and Todd involved and we've been moving forward with a lot of new material, and we're gonna actually gonna be recording it here within at least a couple of months, and hopefully have something out by spring, a new album out by next spring."

On what Parker and Todd bring to the table in the songwriting department:

Rockenfield: "I think it's all about chemistry. I think we've just found a good chemistry between the five of us. I mean, Michael, Eddie and I have had chemistry for such a long time, and Parker has been with us now for many years, playing our old material. And we're always thinking and looking at the future, and we've talked about what to do and how to do it, and rolling Todd into the equation, he's just stepped in and fit the role of what QUEENSRŸCHE wants to achieve and what we wanna do. The writing process so far has been really great. As Eddie said, we've been working on stuff for quite awhile now. We've got a lot of new material that's ready to go, and we're looking to be in the studio here really soon and have something out really early of next year and get back on the road and support the record that's out and tour around the world. And once again, coming back to it, I think it's just about the chemistry. We just got really lucky with the five of us; the chemistry is really gonna prove itself."

On the lyrical inspiration for the new material:

Rockenfield: "I thnk it really depends on the song we're working on at the time. Whatever a particular song lends, or feels like it needs, we try to make that the emotion of the song. Hence, the lyric will hopefully follow that emotion as well. We're still working on a bunch of stuff, so at this point in time I think… The proof will be in the pudding when everybody can hear it when it finally comes out. But I think our fans are gonna be really pleasantly surprised and they're gonna have something that I think they're gonna consider some good work by us that they've been missing for quite a while. And we're just really excited about it."

On the band's legacy:

Rockenfield: "We've got a great legacy. I mean, we don't take it for granted by any means. We've been fortunate to stay in the music business and make it a career of ours with great chemistry together for a long time. And with our new movement now, with having Todd in the band, and our ability to go out and really focus on some of the great, fun material that has made QUEENSRŸCHE memorable, that's what we wanted to do. I mean, [the fan support] has been crazy. Even as of just last night, with the show that we played in Corpus Christi, it's just been a blowup of response to us today, just after last night. It's hard not to have enthusiasm when that happens to you. But that just hasn't been kind of happening to us for a bit; we've been kind of a little stale, I think, for unfortunate reasons, and I think now we're just looking to change that."

QUEENSRŸCHE's setlist for South Texas Rock Fest:

01. Queen Of The Reich
02. Speak
03. Walk In The Shadows
04. The Whisper
05. En Force
06. Child Of Fire
07. Warning
08. The Needle Lies
09. Prophecy
10. Roads To Madness
11. I Don't Believe In Love
12. My Empty Room
13. Eyes Of A Stranger

Encore:

14. Take Hold Of The Flame
15. Jet City Woman
16. Silent Lucidity
17. Empire

What a joke. Progressed as musicians? Is that why you're "returning to history"? And you seriously have the nerve to say that you don't take your legacy for granted after what you've done? The legacy has been tarnished forever. I almost feel sorry for these fools. The level of incompetence and shortsightedness is staggering.

Always a bunch of vague statements too. No wonder they rarely speak. Nothing of substance to say and I'm sure they don't want to risk exposing the holes in their story. First of all, Scott Rockenfield discussing lyrics? HA! I almost died laughing. No one is buying that music is written. Since when are you always constantly writing? This isn't 1984 anymore as much as you'd like to pretend. Listen. The only way these guys will have a new album out by spring is if they put out a live album full of songs they had little to do with writing. Maybe they can record it sometime during their massive 1-2 shows per month tour.

This band has no future. Boys, put on your best pair of kneepads and start crawling. You know where to reach Geoff. Oh wait. He's actually on tour. That's right!

FUN FACT: On this current tour which began just last week, Geoff Tate has already played more dates than RISING WEST (under any name) has played in their entire existence (which began in May).

FUNNER Fact: GT may have played more shows ... Queensryche has played to more people. Mr. Mish ... or Miranda ... or Paul Gargano (doesn't really matter because you both have the same sized dick and have as much sex appeal as an abortion) ... just shut up. I suspect that your boss would be receiving a much better reception if you and the rest of your Retard Street Team weren't on here trolling every fucking article related to the Bitch (I mean Boss) or his former employer Queensryche.

For those of you who might not know, the above pot by mister mish was in fact written by a partcularly bitter and spiteful member of Geoff Tate's entourage. So bitter and so spiteful it could even be the horrible man himself.

And mister mish, of course Geoff Tate has played more dates than Queensryche since they fired his sorry ass, he needs to as he's gigging for $100 and a basket of fries. It's over you clown.

Long live Queensryche!

Why is it safe to say that? Do the people who support the REAL Queensryche only show up on QR/Tate threads? Do the people who support the REAL Queensryche quote statements straight of a press release? Do the people who support the REAL Queensryche state facts that only someone on their payroll would know? It is a FACT that Tate's family and employees are all over these stories. As evidenced by the very FIRST post on this QUEENSRYCHE story. Stop trying to deny it or accuse others of the despicable actions of the Tate camp. It's offensive!

I can certainly see this being a disappointment, but as another commenter said, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt. No need for them to put out something rushed either, I'd rather them take their time.

Ah, poor mistah mish. Check out jacked up that crowd was. Compare that with Geoff's recent dive bar appearances where you could almost hear a pin drop (the ones that weren't cancelled anyway).

Nobody did more to fuck up the QR legacy than Geoff Tate trying to turn QR into some sort of art house jazz fusion band.

@voice of sanity

Now c'mon dude, Geoff isn't just touring for a $100 and a bag of fries. He also gets a free drink token with each performance. They don't allow outside beverages in the joint so he can't bring his Insania in with him. That took ALOT of negotiation on Susan's part to get the free token thrown into the agreement.

This is the first time I have bothered listening to any live clips with Todd singing, and while it's a little strange not hearing Geoff's very distinctive voice, Todd does a really good job, and if Queensryche minus the dickhead that Geoff Tate has become, means that Queensryche are going to start rocking a lot harder than they did on the last album, I'm all for that, and really look forward to hearing new material.

@ Von Helsing

We know bands care about/read website comments. Every week or so there's a story about some rock star mad at the BB.net comments. Geoff himself in an interview posted here last week spoke of all the comment negativity and tried accusing his ex band mates of having "multiple accounts" to post this stuff. You must've missed that one. Funny, because that's exactly what his camp is doing.

Anything involved with Tate's solo career (his new album, tours) for the most part has been met with doubt, trepidation, and a sincere sense that "this really isn't gonna be good."

OTOH, anything involved with the revamped QR for the most part has been met with anticipation, sense of hope, and sincere sense that "they might really recapture some of what made them special in the 1st place."

Things could of course go either way for either side, but I think the perception that people hold tells you all you need to know about how people view Geoff's future vs. QR's future.

While I am certainly behind the band as I want them to do very well, I can't help but feel this will be a very difficult task for them. Degarmo really did write a metric shit ton of the music and Tate wrote most of lyrics which also translates into the hooks and great vocal stylings. All of these things are the trademarks of this once great band.

The current band has Wilton... I am however open to whatever they put out there as I am hoping Todd plays himself and not a Tate clone.

Here is to hoping!

Lt's be honest though, DeGarmo wasn't exactly lighting the world on fire toward the end of his QR involvement. Listen to Spys4Darwin and you won't exactly be enthralled. Even Empire only has like 4 or 5 good songs on it and was a solid indication of where the band was headed. Promised Land (which I actually like better than Empire) and Hear in the Now Frontier were pretty much the end. They should've just gone their seperate ways after that album and disbanded. QR hasn't been worth a shit since then.

Sounds just like the old Queensryche. This guy sounds more like Geoff Tate than Geoff Tate does. No wonder the Queensryche guys are so happy. Twice the voice with none of the douche-baggery. Now if Blabbermouth would just stop writing about Tate every f**king day, everybody but mister meh would be happy. Mister meh or mah or whoever he is, is secretly Geoff Tate. Hey mister, do you have a taste for life that borders on insanity?? Hahahahaha, f**k Geoff Tate!!!

It's what I love about the band vs. their former singer. Let the music do the talking and let the media release the legal documents. Focusing on what's important and not participating in the media feeding frenzy.

Tate, on the other hand, would do well to simply settle and get sober. The man has some serious life reappraisal to do and the sooner he does it the happier he will be.

What Mr. Mish doesn't realize is that he/she's making us hate GT even more.

Is there any doubt that this is the better line up??? Have you watched the video of them performing "Queen of the Ryche"?! Geoff Tate hasn't been able to pull of those notes for 15 years!! This guys totally blows him out of the water, and I can't wait to hear the new material. Maybe DeGarmo will have some interest in returning to Queensryche now...

DeGarmo is the winner in all this, He sits back and laughs each day when ever a new Queensryche story comes up.

My favorite part of the interview is when Scott says... "We're gonna rip it apart, that's about it!"

FUCK YEAH!!!!!

I have yet to hear anyone sing the 2nd verse correctly live.. I love that part.. but both Tate and Todd don't go for the high part. Even back in 91 with LIVEcrime. wtf!

"No happy ending like they've always promised"

Apparently age caught up to Tate between '88 and '91. Happens to us all.

this bickering is pathetic. Retire the QR name until you have a full on reunion. This scab version of QR is a good cover band,no more no less. Won't waste a dime on this when they hit the East Coast...and to be fair GT should drop all inferences to QR in his promos, he was a piece on the puzzle.

for one, am excited to hear a new Queensryche record with Todd is on the way. I can't say that's been the case for a looong goddamn time (I gave up after Q2k.). I will never understand all the hate for this once killer band now that they're unchained and poised for greatness, imo. Suck it, haters. I will be buying - happily.

Just say U Luv It and you get a job.

Unfortunately Wilton is correct; most of those songs haven't been played in whole or original key because I snort Insania through my nose and spread the disease through my spit.

I'm so over it's unreal. I'm just getting STARTED! I've played more shows. Hell, even looking in front of a mirror and applying my Anton LaVey face paint is a performance in itself.
