TONY IOMMI Talks New BLACK SABBATH Album, BILL WARD, RICK RUBIN And RONNIE JAMES DIO (Video) - Nov. 1, 2012
Eric Blair of "The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show" conducted an interview with legendary BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi at the Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund's second awards gala, which was held last night (Wednesday, October 31) at the Avalon nightclub in Hollywood, California. You can watch video footage of the chat below.

On the work that Ronnie James Dio Stand Up And Shout Cancer Fund — a charity organization dedicated to cancer prevention, research and education — is doing, especially considering that he is a cancer survivor himself (Iommi was diagnosed with lymphoma late last year):

Iommi: "Well, I'm a survivor up until now. I'm still very new to it. It's great that there's somebody doing something about it and trying to get rid of this awful disease. You can't praise it enough. Things like this is what 'is needed] to make people aware of what is going on."

On reports that he has laid down guitar tracks on 15 new BLACK SABBATH songs in the studio:

Iommi: "That's wrong. When Ozzy [Osbourne, BLACK SABBATH singer] said it [in a recent interview], I think he meant what we've done. We've written 15 songs and we've played them all. But now, at the moment, we're recording them. We recorded them at my house first, in England, just as demos, but now we're doing them for real. So we're about six tracks in now, at the moment."

On Rick Rubin's approach to producing:

Iommi: "Well, he's just a vibe merchant, really. He vibes you up. He's not one that gets involved hands on. He leaves it to you to do it, and he sort of says, 'I like it,' or 'I don't like it.'"

On whether he would like to see original drummer Bill Ward back in BLACK SABBATH:

Iommi: "We'll always have a heart for Bill, but I think it's gone past that now, because it's gone on so long that I don't see that happening at the moment. Maybe at some point we might [play together again]."

On his fondest memory of his late BLACK SABBATH and HEAVEN & HELL bandmate Ronnie James Dio:

Iommi: "Oh, I've got a lot of memories of Ronnie. We had some great times. Particularly when we'd done the last album with Ronnie [HEAVEN & HELL's 'The Devil You Know'] and the last tours, it was a whole new world. We had such a great time and we were looking forward to doing another album. So there's a lot of great memories of Ronnie."

BLACK SABBATH's new album is tentatively scheduled for release in April 2013 via Vertigo/Universal Republic in the U.S. and Vertigo in all other territories.

Iommi received the "King Of Rock 'N Roll Award" at last night's event.

"Well, he's just a vibe merchant, really." Rick Rubin is a lazy overpaid joke, always has been, and anyone paying him for his "input" is an idiot. Also, I thought they had completed 6 songs like a month ago. At this rate the new record won't be finished until May 2013.

Well, just read that the record will be out in the Spring of 2013, so almost six months to go.

yep, Rubin is a fucking overpaid old deaf bastard - he will probably ruin this new album with extreme compression like it was with Death magnetic (or any other record produced by him in a last 10 years).

It's never going to happen. Bill Ward is far too old and simply can't play 2 hour shows anymore. The last tour he did with Sabbath and Oz, he was in such bad shape that Vinny Appice had to fill in something on the order of half or more of the shows. The tour before that, he was all but replaced by Mike Bordin for the same reason. Ward has had at least 2 major heart attacks, and has a history going back the 1980, of dropping out of tours due to health reasons. It's time for someone who can actually play to be Sabbaths Drummer.

Stay strong and hang in there, Tony. Even the Gods the know to keep you around for a while yet 'cos you have brilliant riffs and tunes inside you yet to create, share and better the world with some addictively heavy-ass'd cool.

Rick Rubin gets the job done, though: no matter how his method of producing appears. I still think Sabbath made the right choice to go with him. Either him or pull Rodger Bain out of retirement, he and Tom Allom, who engineered the first three Sabbath albums.

Rock On, Tony. You Will: You're Tony F***ing Iommi: The Riffmeister Extraordinaire. Peace.

As the most over payed man in the country. He is not a real producer like Bob Ezrin, who actually mans the board and knows something about the mechanics of instruments and music composition. One really honest and articulate FAN could do what he does. I wish they would ask me to have a listen to tell them if they are on the right track or not - I'll do it for free. They should have had someone tell them what a joke "Psycho Man" was.

Wow, not one "No Bill Ward = No Black Sabbath" comment (yet).

Sorry, but considering Black Sabbath had so many lineup changes over the years and at one point having only Tony Iommi as its sole member would conclude that Tony Iommi is Black Sabbath.

So the real equation is No Tony Iommi = No Black Sabbath.

Surprised at Tony's attitude regarding Bill. Nothing about trying to get him back in or the integrity of a reunion without such and important component.

Hoping Tony can come out of this cancer bout victorious.

As far as the album goes, honestly, I couldn't care less if it lives up to the hype. Sabbath no longer has anything to prove because they have a legacy that'll live on forever.

while playing a song during the Master of Metal shows with Priest. Those are the Black Sabbath and RJD highlights for me, seeing they were having a good time and me watching my fav Metal band, Dio-BS. Unfort. Didn't see their last tour, they played venues without a pit section. Iommi is Black Sabbath, plain and simple, good to hear the worst is over, my guess is they will be at Coachella in 2013... Tired of the Jay-Z-like artists I've heard they've had in last 3 years. Kings of Leon headliners, how lame can it get?

I just hope he makes it through to completion of the album. Not JUST then...but you know what I'm trying to say. That fuckin' cancer is something else. Some get through treatment.....and live a full life. Others get through treatment...feel better....think they're cured....and drop dead a month later. Good thoughts go to Tony. I hope he does indeed beat this.

Is way beyond needing Rick Rubin. He sits in a chair & listens to the tracks in his home. He says no to a track & sends you back in the studio to re do the song until he says yes. He makes a record take twice as long to record. I say go back to the Record Plant where Vol.4 & Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was recorded. Tony & Geezer are capable of producing it

I don't give a shit that Bill isn't doing the tour if physically he can't do it and isn't reliable. That's totally understandable. However, they should've recorded the album with him. That's just plain stupid. At least while recording you can take your time, take breaks and cool down. I wish this album will be good. But just knowing that Bill will not be playing on it is sad.

And yes, this Blair guy is very obnoxious. I'd hate to have him shove a mic in my face and ask the questions the way he does.

Don't much like the Bill Situation, but i'm still interested in the new album, since it's the first with Ozzy since you know, that unmentionably disappointing final album. Hopefully the material is stronger than "Psycho Man" or "Selling My Soul" from Reunion.

Billl Ward deserves to play on the album. I cant believe this crap is happening after all these years..truly sad. Especially if he's not going to be on the new studio album. i could understand if he wasnt physically able to go on tour and play live anymore.

From the last Sabbath concert i saw Mr.Ward was in WAY better shape than Ozzy as a performer. And if he can't cut it touring anymore, pick up the phone and tell him yourselfs. Surely the guy can go into the studio record an album!
