Study: Heavy Metal Induces Shaking In Shelter Dogs - Nov. 8, 2012
According to a new study by a Colorado State University associate professor, dogs in animal shelters were less likely to bark and more likely to sleep to classical music than heavy metal.

Lori Kogan, who is in the College Of Veterinary Medicine And Biomedical Sciences and a licensed psychologist, played different music within at a shelter over the course of four months and recorded their responses. The investigated genres included classical, heavy metal and a simplistic psychoacoustic classical composition marketed specifically for dog relaxation.

Kogan's study suggests that heavy metal induces more nervous shaking in dogs. Playing classical music appeared to calm dogs more than other music selections or no music at all, according to the study, which appears in a recent issue of the Journal Of Veterinary Behavior.

The study suggests that shelters refrain from playing heavy metal music because of the detrimental impact it may have on dogs' stress and anxiety levels.

I remember typing this same info ten years ago on this very sight about what I read ten years before that. The test done 20 years ago took groups of rats with each group listening to a different genre of music and then put them through a maze. The rats listening to classical obviously finished the maze repeatedly where as the rats listening to metal, Anthrax specifically, ate each other. I guess sleeping dogs is more user friendly...

In other words if I want to totally freak out the neighbors dog I need to sit in the yard with a radio listening to Slayer?

Metal is not meant for dogs to listen to. Their ears are too sensitive to the sound. Hasn't anyone ever heard a dog howl when a ambulance truck goes by? It irritates them.

I'm not a professor and I figured it out. Go do some real research.

To the lab techs of this study:

For some reason, you choose to perform case studies of which 99% of normal human beings know what the results will be BEFORE conducting these ridiculous studies.

It infuriates me to know end that we still have people dying of cancer, AIDS, heart disease, etc., and the funds are somehow available to perform a study like this. Not to mention this simple fact: how the hell can you sleep at night knowing you're studying how heavy metal music effects dog behaviour, meanwhile someone you might know is on their deathbed because their organs are being eaten inside out?

Wake the f*ck up and get your f*cking priorities straight.

Signed,
The grandson of BOTH grandfathers who died of heart disease before the age of 60.

Sorry for your losses, man...

But, I wouldn't overreact. There are many people who do animal studies... it isn't like these guys were described as "doctors who were researching a cure for cancer but took a few months off to play metal for dogs." LOL

Yeah, no shit.

Dogs have incredibly sensitive ears, and subjecting them to heavy metal is incredibly cruel.

When I get a dog, I'll only be listening to my music on headphones.

Our dog was rescued from a shelter. She sits peacefully next to my amp while I'm playing guitar. Sometimes she falls asleep. I don't play classical music.

They can take this study and slap it right up their old tan tailpipes.

I've had dogs for numerous years (bulldogs) and I do a lot of travelling for my job while listening to heavy metal with my dog in the car. She sleeps all the time and I see no sign of nevousness. I'm not disputing the study, but in no way does my music seem to bother my dog during our travels.

I agree. I think this is just referring to dogs who haven't been exposed to it. I listen to cd's and dvd's on full blast on my surround sound system and my pets could care less - because I have been doing that since I got them when they were little.

They must have been listening to Limp Bizkit. The dogs would be much happier if it was Black Sabbath.

We had a dog that used to cry whenever the Channel 9 news was starting.

And he would cry to certain TV commercials. None of those commercials, or the Channel 9 news theme music, could be described as metal.

He never cried to the Metal I used to play. But Death Metal wasnt around in those days.

I guess this University hobos need to come up with something to justify their education or existence or whatevers.

Since this is a study, I would like to see how heavy metal was given a definition. Does it really capture the essence of metal, or was the professor only using tracks by Slayer and Cannibal Corpse for this theory...?

waste of money. I could have told them that for free. Depending on what type of metal it was, if I was in a cage I'd probably go crazy too. That's why to really enjoy my favorite metal I will consume massive amounts of Jack, Budweiser and Black Ice Camo. The music doesnt really bother my dog, but thunder will send her to the basement. And i'm not talking the AC/DC type either.

The same study shows that if you play Motorhead, the dogs roll over, refuse to work, and die if the owner doesn't give them a handout.

Your tax dollars @ work lol.
