Video GEOFF TATE Says His New Album Highlights Breakdown Of Socio-Political Communication - Nov. 9, 2012
Video footage of QUEENSRŸCHE vocalist Geoff Tate talking to Artisan News about his second solo album, "Kings & Thieves", can be seen below. The CD was released on November 6 via InsideOut Music.

In a recent interview with ARTISTdirect.com, Tate stated about his vision for "Kings & Thieves", "Typically, when I make a record, I have an idea of what I want to try to accomplish. I go about making that happen by making lists. I'm a list maker. I jot down all of these ideas I've got and I form those ideas into an outline. Then, I start using it as a punch list to take care of all these details I'd like to do. I knew I wanted to make a really solid rock record. I didn't want to stray too far into other musical endeavors. I wanted to keep it more rock-oriented with traditional rock instruments. I also knew that I wanted it to be more of a live record where all of the musicians get in a room and actually play together. A lot of it was recorded and written at the same time. That was very fun, and I've never done that before. It has an effect that makes the music seem more immediate and raw rather than being a polished, rehearsed-into-the-ground record, which I've done throughout most of my career. Making this record was a different process for me, and I made it very quickly. It flowed from the moment I started until the time I was done with it. It only took about six months to make. By comparison, QUEENSRŸCHE records have taken years to make."

Asked if there is any connection to his first solo record, Tate said, "Well, it has been a long time. It's been a long time coming too. They're two really different records to me. On that first solo record, I really wanted to stretch outside of the QUEENSRŸCHE box and do everything I could never do. I wanted to explore my influences in my writing. That first album has R&B influences, which I'm very into. It's got classical and electronica influences, but it doesn't have a lot of rock. "Kings & Thieves" is really a rock record. I focused on that aspect."

Tate issued his first solo CD in 2002 on Sanctuary Records. Self-titled, the LP was a huge departure from the work he had previously done with QUEENSRŸCHE.

i've noticed geoff talking alot about this all being about "money"....and saying that the other guys are commiting "financial suicide" by firing him....

a couple things.....i've never heard the other guys say one single thing about money, which makes me think geoff is the one that is financially nervous.

plus i think geoff fails to realize that, even if it's true, it may be worth it for the guys to make less money and NOT have to deal with his dumb ass.

Tate is afraid of something. If he is so sure of his retaining the QR name why isn't this a new QR record instead of a solo effort? Surely Tate was the pure driving force behind QR all these years, why give up on the name now?

Actually they fired him, and he is out of Queensryche. Per the legal documents posted on Blabb for all of us to read, Queensryche had a binding legal corporate contract that said, in part, any 3 members of the corporation can vote out the other 1 member. That's exactly what they did, Wilton, Rockenfield, and Jackson called a corporate meeting, and they decided to fire Geoff Taint. It's a done deal and Geoff Taint is legally no longer a member of Queensryche.

The most that Geoff Taint can now accomplish is to continue to tour as Geoff Taint's Queensryche, like Jack Russell has done after getting fired from Great White, or The Voice of Queensryche, as singers like Chuck Negron and Dennis DeYoung have done after they were fired by their former bands.

Actually, it has been established that both parties can use the name Queensryche for live performances until the court case. I'm not sure how that translates to an album release. But I'm guessing that until there is some sort of buyout, they have to pay him 25% of what they make with the name and he would have to pay them 75%. That's my theory. I hope it's true because after he buys Blotzer his 6-pack of beer each night on the next tour, there ain't gonna be much left over for Geoff!

Geoff Taint can use the name "Queensryche" as he is doing, Geoff Taint's Queensryche, whatever his posters say. That doesn't mean the real Queensryche has to pay him anything. They fired him and he's no longer a partner.

Geoff can replace pour three of Blotzer's beers into a temporary container and replace it with Insania wine every night, and then take it out of Blotzer's fee. Problem solved.

Geoff Taint would also have to pay 75% of his Geoff Taint's Queensryche tour revenue back to Wilton, Rockenfield, and Jackson, under your theory. I find that very difficult to believe.

Look, we're both on the same side as far as supporting the real Queensryche. But this isn't a garage band, it's a corporation. It's not as simple as you are saying. I think he can use the word Queensryche any way he wants until the court case and so can the real band. I think they are still partners in the corporation together until the court case is settled and there are financial consequences along with that. I'm not a corporate attorney so I will not speculate further. Except to say I think Geoff is gonna LOSE in the long run!

Always looking to push at the boundaries, Queensryche singer Geoff Tate has taken the art of being interviewed to the next level… by exclusively interviewing himself for queensryche.com! Some excerpts appear below…

Geoff Tate: Geoff, let’s get started by talking about the career direction that Queensryche has taken since 1988, when the groundbreaking operation: mindcrime album went platinum, you toured the industrialized world, playing for at least a million people, and Queensryche was being compared to Pink Floyd after having produced one of the all-time great concept albums. Queensryche didn’t wind up becoming the “heavy metal Pink Floyd,” though. What happened?

Geoff Tate: Well, Geoff, this is a complex question. The answer lies in Queensryche’s wanting to break the mold. Many bands seek to evolve during their careers, and we see the phrase “musical evolution” applied by reviewers to that kind of thing all the time. We in the ‘rhyche wanted to buck the trend and do the exact opposite thing of what people expected. So, we musically devolved. Instead of driving to be the heavy metal Pink Floyd, the models for us since operation: mindcrime have been four-piece Foreigner and ‘80s Kansas.

Geoff Tate: I see, Geoff. In 1990, after “Empire” was released, there were actual press accounts of vomiting being induced by the record. How do you respond to that issue?

Geoff Tate: Look, Geoff, when a person vomits, their alimentary canal goes into spasms and expels the contents of their stomach. I really don’t see how listening to a record could cause that, and think we should move on here.

Geoff Tate: That’s fine, Geoff. Another criticism of ‘90s-era Queensryche is that you tended to have one ‘80s-style metal single at or near the beginning of each record, that one song receiving radio and MTV airplay, while the rest of the record was more in the devolution style you discussed earlier. Many people took this as an attempt to mislead the fans into thinking that Queensryche was being true to its metal roots when it was in fact continuing to devolve. It seems to me like that criticism is well founded. What do you have to say in response to it?

Geoff Tate: I think you are being too critical here, Geoff. What we did with the “one metal single” concept was make sure that people who we view as narrow minded toads to manipulate got to appreciate how good we had become at emulating four-piece Foreigner and ‘80s Kansas. Had it not been for songs such as “Empire,” “I am I,” and “Sign of the Times,” I don’t think the toads would have noticed our devolution at all.

Geoff Tate: Fair enough Geoff. But, you have to admit that ‘80s bands that maintained their credibility with the fans during the ‘90s are currently outselling you by 20 or more to 1. How do you address the “loss of credibility” issue?

Geoff Tate: It isn’t us, Geoff, that lost credibility – it’s the fans who did. After all, if the fans had any credibility, they would have rejected us immediately when “Empire” was released, instead of delaying that rejection until “Promised Land” hit the shelves.

Geoff Tate: Good point, Geoff – we will move on. Now that you have mentioned “Promised Land,” Chris DeGarmo’s song “Bridge” on that record has been on the receiving end of criticism and outright derision from metal fans who see the song as a pansy sellout. Would you care to comment?

Geoff Tate: Yes Geoff, I would. It is no secret in the metal community that bands are often motivated to write a song by films or sci fi and fantasy novels. Iron Maiden, for example, even wrote a song called “Where Eagles Dare” that was influenced by a Burt Lancaster World War 2 film. The story behind “Bridge” is that Chris DeGarmo was influenced in writing it by several ‘80s comedies, including “The Breakfast Club,” “Sixteen Candles,” and “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” the common theme in those films being that someone was bitching and moaning about their parents.

Geoff Tate: OK Geoff, with that one explained, let’s talk about your solo career, which, in contrast to Queensryche’s devolution, has not been noticed much at all. As opposed to it having any kind of impact or direction, your solo career merely hit the ground without any kind of bounce. I believe “a turd in a bag” is the appropriate comparison to be made here.

Geoff Tate: It indeed emitted a thump upon landing, Geoff. I really would rather not talk about this. Can you ask me about something else?

Geoff Tate: OK, Geoff, I will. Over the course of your career, you have been photographed with a number of different looks, different haircuts, different outfits and styles, even while wearing sunglasses. Would you comment on all of this, and what you feel is important concerning the “Geoff Tate look?”

Geoff Tate: Sure Geoff. The thing to emphasize concerning the various looks I have had is that, however else it may appear, over the course of my entire career the size, shape, and proximate location of my skull have remained constant no matter what haircut I had. This constancy remained in force even when I was wearing sunglasses, although it is true that sunglasses exert a slightly downward pressure upon one’s ears…

Despite what you might think of Tate, his new album is good.

I think it is up to the other side now to put out a killer album because if they don't, they'll be nothing more than a parody and everyone will realize that QR was Tate all along. One thing for sure... don't expect the new "Queensryche" album to have any grace or eloquence. More than likely it will be heavy, but boring. Just a guess. I hope it is killer with actual substance... but without Tate, I doubt the writing will be very deep.

Let me put it this way... if Geoff was looking to make the case that he is Queensryche, I think he made it. Kings & Thieves isn't a solo album, it's a band album and it sounds like Queensryche. And I do like it.

Now, I do hope that Scott & Co. put out a killer album, I really do. But history is any guide, it's not going to happen.

As to who is the "real" Queensryche now, the jury is still out...

"but without Tate, I doubt the writing will be very deep".

Please tell me that you are joking. I heard Dedicated to Chaos and was shocked at how bad the writing was.

Excerpts:

1) Oh, baby, I've got it ... so bad for you!
Got it bad for you! I got it bad for you!
I got it bad, bad, bad, bad dog, don't make me beg.

2) I've seen you watching me.
What are you waiting for?
Someday never comes.
When will you see?
I can take you higher.
I'm a fool to let you go.

3)
It's twenty years on and you still look good to me.
The lines on our faces remind me of places we've been and the good times we've seen.
I'm so in love with you. We're just picking up speed.
Here's my promise, I'll be a better man! I'm just getting started.

...pardon me while I take a shower to wipe the shame away...

Obviously you were one of the 23 people who actually purchased Kings & Thieves. It's cool that you like it, but crappy, plodding mid-tempo songs and boring arrangements with terrible vocal melodies and poor audio production just isn't for me. I've heard some of the songs online, and the mix just sucks ass.

Tate could get me interested if he would release something that isn't Dedicated to Chaos Part II.

You know, I'm really sick of daily Geoff Taint articles, and I can't believe he is actually giving this many interviews. But maybe he is, so desperate is he to turn public opinion away from his former bandmates. All that he is accomplishing is to alienate his last few remaining fans, the ones who remember his great voice from 25 years ago and don't know how bad he sounds now because they haven't continued to follow him or Queensryche past their peak.

So go ahead Geoff Taint, keep digging your own career grave, deeper, deeper. Your wife can always go back to stripping and you can sell wine to maintain your lifestyles. And Blabbermouth, good job finding a subject with which to enrage your usual readers so that you can keep your page hits up.

I just watched that video and realized how utterly retarded Artisan News is. First they say a breakdown in communication resulted in he and his former bandmates forming two different versions of Queensryche. No, they fired him, got a new singer and kept going. Geoff has only TALKED about forming his own version that doesn't even exist as of today. Secondly, they say he's "jumping on the shiprocked tour" Nov 27th. Shiprocked is a fucking cruise ship concert, it's not a tour. Although we can only hope he jumps off "the tour" in the middle of the Atlantic!

Geoff Taint slipped someone at Artisan a few Franklins and a case of Insania to tell the story his way. That fortune that Geoff Taint says he's spending to defend himself these days? It ain't all legal fees.

Communication breakdown -- yeah no more words, let the spit fly and the sucker punches backstage sent the right message.

Good point, Sask. As I've said before, it's easier thumbing down like motherfuckers than putting a lot of work and time formulating actual comments...anyway, please welcome abyss_of_blood to the family!

The lyrics of Eyes Of A Stranger never suited Geoff Tate better:

All alone now
Except for the memories
Of what we had and what we knew
Everytime I try to leave it behind me
I see something that reminds me of you

Is this all that's left of my life before me
Fur jacket memories, sedative highs
No happy ending like they've always promised
There's got to be something left for me

And I raise my glass and stare
Into the wine of Insania

Opinions about the man aside, he needs to stop trying to sing like he used to and find a comfortable lower register (...assuming anyone wants him to sing anymore). No amount of production tools is going to hide the strain in his voice and the squeakiness I've been hearing for the last decade. It's distracting and irraTATE-ing. See wot I did there? ...I did it AGAIN!

Lyrically...*sigh*. Just sad. Dedicated to Chaos REALLY showed how much he's overflowing with a mojo soaked midlife crisis. Nobody wants to hear about your sex drive, jackass. It's just way too fucking CREEPY. I expect Chris Hansen's voice to pop in or something. Sorry, Geoff, I don't want to be ear raped by you.

Your opinions are obviously valid (Although personally, I disagree). But to say "...poor audio production" is just plain wrong. The production sounds massive: huge soundscapes with massive depth of sound.

BTW on "Evil" GT sounds on top, top form and it is obvious that he is fucking furious- can't think who he has in mind with this one.
In the line "Remember, I you want to save your soul..." The word "soul" is held with the awsome slow modulated vibrato that Tate does better than anyone.

And the guitar intro / riff on "Waiting" is atmospheric brilliance.
Spooky GT, at his best.
