'Top 100 Death Metal Albums Of All Time' Examined In DECIBEL's Collector's Edition Issue - Nov. 10, 2012
So far, Decibel has expelled three special collector's edition one-offs: the Thrash Metal Hall Of Fame issue, the Black Metal Hall Of Fame issue and the (sold-out) Top 100 Albums Of The 2000s issue. The magazine's fourth stab at limited-edition putridity is the best yet — this time, all of the content is 100 percent new and exclusive: The Top 100 Death Metal Albums Of All Time issue is set to slaughter souls.

Decibel's staff has painstakingly broken down the genre's most influential slabs, while extolling the virulent virtues of recent groundbreakers who refuse to merely carry the torch of legends like MORBID ANGEL, CANNIBAL CORPSE, CARCASS, DEATH or AT THE GATES. And then there's the inverted cross on top: a brand new, hard-partying Hall Of Fame on UNLEASHED's debut Swe-death classic, "Where No Life Dwells".

Check out this limited-edition corpse-grind pronto — or Decibel's special collector's edition issue bundle — available exclusively through Music Monitor Network retail stores and DecibelMagazine.com.

Carcass invented melo death. even though they didn't want to with heartwork, Death is the definition of Death metal, and was one of the most important bands in the Florida Death metal scene and at the gates is part of the founders of Gothenburg Melodic death. I assume this was a joke, otherwise you're a tard. Or just really into black metal...obv with your screen name and trolling death metal cus you think black is better...which it is factually not. ha jk. Black rules too

I never considered Carcass death metal either. Death's first two albums were death metal, the rest were more of a prog-death. At The Gates were death metal, just very melodic.

You are contradicting yourself, they are talking AS A WHOLE, then there were subgenres. You are including the word death in prog-death and melodeath, so?

Carcass, Heartwork being my favorite.
Im an old school kind of guy. Maiden, Dio,(old)Metallica, etc, but i can appreciate some of the more brutal shit, too. Im not up on all the sub, sub, sub-genres either, so dont bother trying to tell me Carcass isn't "true" death either, I dont care.

I have been a huge fan of these bands, because they are unique and offer something more than most generic death metal which sounds absolutely the same as all the others. Having said that these bands are different and rule...

Possessed, Obituary(John Tardy greatest death voice in the world), Death, Bolt Thrower, Entombed (Left Hand Path), Morbid Angel, Carcass, Napalm Death, Pestilence (with Martin Van Drunen), Asphyx, Brujeria, Dimmu Borgir.

That is all I have, and can't really get into the generic shit.

Possessed IS death metal. But you could also argue they are thrash, or even black. Death, thrash, and black metal were not clearly defined in the early 80's.

These "lists" are so silly. Obviously they are meant to sell magazines/product. How many of us are genuinely trying to complete our understanding of a musical genre? Are we now going to go out and buy the top 25 albums from each area? It's silly.

Relax and enjoy these editions for what they are - opinions. Specials like this are meant for fun and, yes, to sell magazines. Last I checked they weren't running a publication to lose money. If you don't like it then simply don't buy it. No need to get all bent out of shape over it.

Is this rhetorical stupidity? What death metal/music fan wouldn't be interested in discovering new music, or stuff about the genre/players they didn't already know? Obviously this issue is aimed at people who probably already know Morbid Angel or Death, but I don't get the cynisism on your part at all. I'd say anyone who genuinely likes death metal has an interest in learning more about it, and especially to hear new music they haven't heard yet.

Subject matter isn't all that makes a band death metal. It's a sound and tone - both heavy guitars and the ever popular "cookie monster" vocals, for the most part - that's a broad sketch.

Slayer doesn't fit those criteria and are squarely in the thrash realm (the sound they helped create). Granted, this is just my opinion but I don't see many who would argue that Slayer is death metal.

Without Chuck Schuldiner and the band Death the metal world would have been robbed of one of its greatest influences and musicians like James Murphy and Gene Hoglan who kept metal alive thru the 90's and bridged the gap between genres. I wanna give a big FUCK YEAH to Decibel for putting this list out and giving notoriety to some of my unsung and fallen heroes of metal!

is top 10 most boring, overated bands. terrible, even with the genius that is behind that band. but nearly every other band in this entire thread is amazing, may death metal live on forever!

" 2 Immolation albums, and neither of them 'Dawn of Possession'??"

I don't subscribe to the belief that a band's first album is automatically its best. While all of Immolation's albums have something going for them (save for Harnessing Ruin...), Close To A World Below and Unholy Cult have both atmosphere and songwriting that are miles above Dawn of Possession, hence their inclusion on MY list. If you'd like to make your own top 10 that has Dawn of Possession in all 10 spots, more power to you. For me, however, it's only their 4th best album, trailing behind the two aforementioned albums and Here In After.

Also, I would like to add a couple of albums to my list. I knew I'd leave something out and Sinister's "Hate" (cue the "it's not Cross the Styx!!" complaints) and Grave's "You'll Never See..." would definitely warrant inclusion into my top 10.
