GEOFF TATE: 'Kings & Thieves' First-Week Sales Revealed - Nov. 14, 2012
QUEENSRŸCHE vocalist Geoff Tate's second solo album, "Kings & Thieves", sold 1,800 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD arrived in stores on November 6 via InsideOut Music.

"Kings & Thieves" track listing:

01. She Slipped Away
02. Take A Bullet
03. In The Dirt
04. Say U Luv It
05. The Way I Roll
06. Tomorrow
07. Evil
08. Dark Money
09. These Glory Days
10. Change
11. Waiting

In a recent interview with ARTISTdirect.com, Tate stated about his vision for "Kings & Thieves", "Typically, when I make a record, I have an idea of what I want to try to accomplish. I go about making that happen by making lists. I'm a list maker. I jot down all of these ideas I've got and I form those ideas into an outline. Then, I start using it as a punch list to take care of all these details I'd like to do. I knew I wanted to make a really solid rock record. I didn't want to stray too far into other musical endeavors. I wanted to keep it more rock-oriented with traditional rock instruments. I also knew that I wanted it to be more of a live record where all of the musicians get in a room and actually play together. A lot of it was recorded and written at the same time. That was very fun, and I've never done that before. It has an effect that makes the music seem more immediate and raw rather than being a polished, rehearsed-into-the-ground record, which I've done throughout most of my career. Making this record was a different process for me, and I made it very quickly. It flowed from the moment I started until the time I was done with it. It only took about six months to make. By comparison, QUEENSRŸCHE records have taken years to make."

Asked if there is any connection to his first solo record, Tate said, "Well, it has been a long time. It's been a long time coming too. They're two really different records to me. On that first solo record, I really wanted to stretch outside of the QUEENSRŸCHE box and do everything I could never do. I wanted to explore my influences in my writing. That first album has R&B influences, which I'm very into. It's got classical and electronica influences, but it doesn't have a lot of rock. "Kings & Thieves" is really a rock record. I focused on that aspect."

Tate issued his first solo CD in 2002 on Sanctuary Records. Self-titled, the LP was a huge departure from the work he had previously done with QUEENSRŸCHE.

Well played Eddie Jackson/Evil Twin. I only assume you are a member of the band, since you’ve already posted 5x to this hour old thread. Nobody who is not directly involved would be that obsessed.

1800 is low, that is true. Although I don’t think the distro was that great. I live in the middle of the largest city in the world and it took me hitting 3 stores to find a copy.

Hey, l like it. It’s just music. The passion to which you jump up and down and hold your breath against Tate is embarrassing.

Queensryche should be able to at least quadruple those numbers. Jesus I could sell that many and I suck. Anyhoo the pressure is on for the real QR to put up or shut up. They need to put out some ass kickin music. After hearing what Mr Tate has put out it shouldnt be too hard.

I guess they feel this is their chance for a little face time with their hero now that the world has turned on him. They figure the time is ripe to be noticed.

It is wonderful to see that so many of Geoff Tate's fans have supported Kings & Thieves by purchasing it. Any lingering doubts surrounding his ability to be successful without his ex-bandmates may now be put to rest. This an extremely good number for the solo album of a vocalist within the progressive and hard rock genres, especially in today's market. Let us not forget that overall record sales have been declining every year.

To put things into perspective, Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie's 2010 solo effort, Static Impulse (also released by InsideOut), sold 1,700 copies in its first week. By comparison, his band's then most recent release, 2009's Black Clouds & Silver Linings sold 40,000 copies. That is a difference of a whopping 96% (or 38,300 units) and illustrates the difficulty a talented and respected artist typically has in reaching and retaining his band's fan base when releasing solo material. What Geoff Tate has accomplished here is virtually unheard of in the industry.

Also, keep in mind that these numbers do not reflect the success Kings & Thieves is enjoying worldwide. The album has been distributed throughout many European countries as well as Japan where it is currently being received very positively.

I am positive that this exceptionally strong start is a sign that the album has long road of success ahead of it. As time goes on, Kings & Thieves will continue to be discovered by new listeners and to garner more critical praise as has been the case with each work created by Geoff Tate over the years.

Yeah there's a slight difference between Geoff Tate and James LaBrie. James is still in a fucking band that sells records. I don't know how long your head has been buried in the sand, but Geoff isn't in Queensryche anymore. Geoff's career is over. Got out of your state of denial and just accept the facts.

Wow, Mish......so Tate only has less than 1800 fans left in the US? As I said, which can be confirmed with even just a cursory look at Tate's FB page, alot of these people bought numerous copies. That's not even enough people to fill the stands at a single high school football game. That's some real perspective right there. That dive bar tour has really paid off.

Wow, 1800 copies, considering that many fans have admitted buying multiple copies? That's awful, even by today's standards. If you also consider that the people who have already bought the album are basically the only ones who still care about Tate (because I highly doubt he's gonna win over any new fans with this piece of rubbish), I doubt he's going to sell much more. If he manages to sell 3000 copies by the end of the year I'll be surprised.
Oh well, it's still more than I expected, I thought he wouldn't even sell 1000 copies. I guess those pub gigs he's been doing lately in front of 50 people must have helped a lot! LOL

Those copies might be how many shipped to walmarts etc. That doesnt mean it is actual sales by consumers. A thousand could have also been bought by the Tate family to sell at pub shows. Even if those are actual sales, it is pathetic. Local metal bands without record deals can sell that many in a week of gigs if they are good, right off the merch tables. Tate's sales are for a whole damn country of 350 million people. Wow, how incredible mish! Good job with your promotions!

In all seriousness, 1800 copies with multiple people buying it isn't anything to be proud of. We have local bands that sell more than that in the same dive bars that Geoff is playing these days.

Geoff is opening to Alice Cooper here in a short while. All the radio ads make NO MENTION on Geoff. I asked my radio buddy why and he replied "Because nobody cares". TRUE STATEMENT.

Wow, that is 36 per state in the US. Wonder how well his tickets are selling for his show in town on the 24th. Not too well probably. The sales figures speak volumes. Best to craft music that is worth buying and listening to, rather than rush out half assed work. Tate shouldn't get his hopes up that the numbers will improve significantly over time. Even offering a package deal with a bottle of Insania won't dress up that turd.

Queensryche without Tate has a great opportunity to change perception and restore fan interest in their legacy. They may not release any new cd until the legal issues are settled, it may be a little while. At least there is hope for great new music from them.

Meanwhile, Tate has alienated many fans who greatly admired his earlier work. Until he sincerely changes his ways, many of us that have been fans of Queensryche will vote with our $$s and stay away from his shows and music.

Tate's first Weeks sales is 4 percent of what the lousy fake QR operation did. That was his first official solo record, where he didnt allow a band format. We were duped into buying that dud because we were hoping for a proper return to form. Were we ever fooled! Look at the downward spiral based only on record sales. I havent seen anything like that by any established metal band. And even op 2 came out during the downloading era. There is only one explanation: people will not pay hard earned money for weak product anymore. Metal fans, with all their loyalty, can only be duped so many times until we say never again. Here's hoping for qr2..0

The industry did.

Established acts suffer in two ways.
1-Old fans come to shows for hits and are no longer part of the buying public.
2-Music is shared, especially when it's a well-known act
3-Some fans come to shows to be near their idol, for thrills

Tate's smart enough to perform a lot of new material which will slowly help sales.

What planet do you and the rest of Camp Tate live on? Here on planet Earth, your excuses don't hold water.

Point blank, Geoff's antics over the years have alienated a vast majority of the fans that supported him and Queensryche. The disappointing sales of K&T (not too mention DTC) is a bell ringing loud and clear. Clean out your ears and your desk at Camp Tate's office. It's over.

On a positive note, I just heard the trailer for the new Queensryche album with Jimbo producing (adios Kelly Gray!!!). Being as I've been on the fence, I can honestly say this will be the first Queensryche CD I will blindly purchase on day one since Q2K (which was awful).

I love how it pointed out "All songs written by Queensryche". Nice slap to the face, eh Camp Tate?

Revolution calling!

I am a geezer of an old fan approaching 50.
1. I go to shows to hear some the classic hits. But I want to hear new mateial that shows that the band is still creatively energized. Rush does a great job of mixing the new with the old. I am a part of the buying public. Just not buying Tates tickets or cd.
2. Yes some music is shared. However, I buy music that is worth purchasing. I am old school and buy cds. I will buy Queensryche's new cd upon release after listening to the teaser on youtube.
3. I go to the show for entertainment, and hope that the bands that have been around for a while have good new music to go with their classics. Rush and Iron Maiden are good examples of what can be done. I don't idolize any band or celeb. Tate's problem s apparently he bought into the idol worship concept too much.

Tate will have a difficult time selling cds. I just returned from Best Buy at lunch. One Kings and Thieves in the T section. No where to be seen with the new release section in the front of the store. Good luck with the performances stimulating sales increases.

Here's the video of Geoff spitting right in Scott's face at the 3:58 mark while he's trying to play music for QUEENSRYCHE FANS!

I do play in a band you dumbfuck! This is why I think you're one of Geoff Tate ball washers who doesn't actually get paid. You're way too stupid even for the Tate psycho squad to hire!

Hey Geoff, how does it feel to know that Steel Panther sells more albums than you do? Actually, Steel Panther is FAR more relevant in today's music scene than you are. Even their recent live DVD sold more copies than your new disc.

This had been the first-week sales of the next Queensryche album, if Tate hadn't been kicked out.

This is a result of an artist proving to his fans, over a number of years, that he has nothing more to give.

... in this world, for a solo album from a singer that has a "hate campaign" following him around the internet. Not bad... and it will keep on growing.

Sorry... its a great record. That's all I give a shit about. Trust me GT doesn't give a fuck about online shit-talk from anonymous hatemongers who would probably kiss his ass in person.

He's having a blast touring the world (with his homies of 40 years), doing interviews, writing music, being creative and in control... plus making wine and eventually still collecting his 25% of Queensryche forever! Hahahahahahaha.... make it rain bitches!

And honestly, I don't mind one bit if QueensRisingWest does well either... it's a win for the fans. I only really care about me. That's how I fucking roll!

Geoff keeps releasing solo albums, and announcing new "Queensryche" album....but everbody knows he doesn't write shit. Studio writers write his music for him, and at the end he just puts his name on the credits, since he wrote some melodies or lyrics here and there.

Geoff's too busy with other business: Trying to be cool for pictures and other promotions, and continuing his wine business and other businesses. Oh, and legal issues and battles.

Geoff's not about bands and passion for music anymore, he's about brands. (just like Queensryche brand etc..)

Which band are you in? Which instrument do you play?
I'd love to hear your brilliant work! Please share and amuse us.

More importantly, is the Good Twin in the band?

The friends and family of Geoff Tate are doing him a disservice by not being more critical of his decisions within the past couple of years. If I knew Tate personally, I would have a heart to heart with him, in the hopes that I could bring him back into reality. Kings and Thieves is very, below average sounding album; and the album sales are proof that the fans (that made him famous), have a higher standard than Kings and Thieves. Also, the image he is portraying screams douche-bag. Enough with the eye liner, and the vests. Someone, please make him look at himself in the mirror and figure out who he really is.

"How I Roll"..."Say U Luv It"... sigh...

"It has an effect that makes the music seem more immediate and raw rather than being a polished, rehearsed-into-the-ground record, which I've done throughout most of my career. Making this record was a different process for me, and I made it very quickly. It flowed from the moment I started until the time I was done with it. It only took about six months to make. By comparison, QUEENSRŸCHE records have taken years to make."

Translation: I can make turds faster!
