Former METALLICA Bassist JASON NEWSTED Wants To Reconnect With His Fans And Friends - Nov. 16, 2012
Former METALLICA and VOIVOD bassist Jason Newsted has launched his new official web site at NewstedHeavyMetal.com.

An introductory message from Jason reads as follows: "Jason Newsted here, it's really me... LOOK!!

"It's time for me to reconnect with all my fans and friends out there around the world with the launch of my OFFICIAL online presence.

"I want YOU to be the first to know about what's happening with me and all of my projects: past, present, and FUTURE!. So send me your email by signing up here on the website and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube."

Check out a video message below.

Jason was inducted, along with the current members of METALLICA and the band's late bassist Cliff Burton, into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on April 4, 2009 in Cleveland, Ohio.

According to MTV, Newsted quit METALLICA in February 2001 for several reasons, including his desire to play more of a creative role. He also felt the band had lost its focus and was spending too much time involved in litigation and political rhetoric. And finally, he needed time off to recover from neck and back injuries he sustained banging his head every night onstage.

Newsted last performed with METALLICA in December 2011 at all four intimate shows at the Fillmore in San Francisco as part of the band's week-long celebration of its 30th anniversary as a group for fan club members only.

He quit just a little too soon. I understand he couldnt take the drama and bullshit anymore. But hetfield rediscovered metal and their roots, started kicking ass again, and taking on the world. Think of all the money and musical opportunities he lost out on. Ah well, he's a multimillionaire and rocked the world. Rob is a better bassist for Metallica I think. More in the groove and closer to cliff.

no, Hetfield got his shit together because he was really hooked on the booze and whatever other stuff he was taking that was never disclosed.. I dont think Het, Larz or Kirk were really super-tight with Jason, so no..i dont think Het went to rehab because of Jason.. how many credits did Jason ever have on Metallica albums?? only a few i think..

and subdue the talent of another bass player?? Rob is where the money is at now, understandable, but he won't ever be able to let his style shine through in Metallica. Needs to hook up with Muir again for Infectious. Newsted was never "let in" to the band, it's been said. Too bad too.

i think he had a bigger role in Flatsam and Jetsom which never carried over to Metallica... after Metallica that Echobrain project never went anywhere, plus Voivod he was probably just using his Metallica paychecks to help try to get them off the ground... remember Phil Anslemo with "superjoint ritual"? all his dime.. er yea, his money for the project.. even though i got the 2 SJ albumns and they are good.. no record company $$$
The papa wheelie project.. whatever. Jason need RiotAct666 in his life and some of RA's moms home cooking and he will be fine-

Jason joined an underground thrash sensation and left one of the biggest selling acts of rock history. Yet he managed to remain down to earth and almost sane - props to him. It might sound awkward for him to say that after 11 years, but I can imagine it takes that long to come back to reality after you step out of that kind of ride.

Lars and James really shit on him. His bass lines are buried in the songs and they didn't give him much of a role in songwriting.
And when they brought in the Shrink, THAT was the final straw. It's too bad, BUT he did play on their BLACK album and will forever be immortalized for that alone. It's a shame....

I agree with most of you guys. He didn't get half of the writing credits he should have. Listen to his bass on Garage Inc and dig up the And Justice For Newsted songs on youtube and you'll see how good of a bassist he was.
Trujillo is a phenomenal bassist, but he is more of a funk bassist. Metallica choose him because of his playing style, cause it was similar to Burton. And plus you'd have to be a moron not to get on board with that metal juggernaut, I mean shit they gave him a million dollars as a signing bonus. I just wish, he would bring more of his element into their music. It could work. They still need to get backl to their roots.

Up top some dude goes on about how Jason leaving had nothing to do with James going to rehab and the band changing. Except that is EXACTLY what happened, and is talked about at length in the SKOM movie and about 50 interviews since.

Had Jason never quit, Metallica would have ended.

Now, there is also another interview with Jason following Metallica's 30 Year Anniversary shows where he says he has such severe back and shoulder problems that he can't tour at any length anymore. So he would have had to have retired from Metallica anyway.

Newsted has always been my favorite member of the MetallicA family, past or present. I still remember when he left them due to supposed neck injuries....caught an EchoBrain show and damn, his head did not stop moving once during the entire show.

We're kidding ourselves if we think for a second he's hurting for money. He made more on the Black album tour than some rockers make in a career.

I miss Jason and I wish he was still in the band. He deserved better and even though I love Metallica, haters be damned. It's a thing called loyalty. I haven't agreed with everything, especially what happened with Jason, but I'm not gonna dump on music I've loved forever because I few things aren't like they used to be. And whether people like it or not, Metallica has helped keep Metal relevant. The other 3 of the Big 4 all have had their careers rejuvenated after those shows, and Orion opened people's eyes to new artists. Back to Jason though, he is better than Rob in ability and vocals. Just because Rob plays without a pick doesn't make him better. They were better with Jason...period!!!

For the sake of the Metallica fans, I'm glad Newsted quit the band. It was a combination of that, James' wife locking him out of the house and releasing the worst studio album by Metallica by far that made James get his shit together.

Unfortunately though, that led to us Metallica fans getting stuck with Rob, a Happy James that can't seem to connect the dots anymore when writing music, and Rick Rubin.

I think it's fairly obvious that Jason leaving Metallica was almost the end of the band. It was a real blow to their collective egos; you don't just get up and walk out of Metallica. It really pissed them off on the outside but crushed them on the inside. They couldn't write, they couldn't think, they couldn't have a normal conversation with each other; they went from the biggest band in the world to a pile of jello. And that's when James snapped.

Jason was always the new kid and James could not bare to let him have autonomy, inside or outside of Metallica. Jason endured so much shit from them, not because he was intimidated, but because he wanted to be accepted as a member of the band. But he never was... and that's The Day That Never Comes...

Don't get me wrong from my first comment. I love Newsted. I hung out with him for half an hour, great guy. Super down to earth. I know why he quit. I just think maybe he quit too soon and could have helped guide metallica into a better future after all the weak Reload and the other bullshit things. Too bad James never respected him more.

But for bass playing ability, Rob is still better. I am a huge Suicidal fan, and he was the best. Not just for funk stuff, but metal. I think he rules in Metallica. Too bad they mixed the album to loud and compressed the sound so you can't hear Rob's bass playing on death magnetic. I downloaded the decifer mix (based on the guitar hero mix), and it sounds ten times better. You can actually hear how amazing and full Rob's playing is. What a shame the cunt who mixed/mastered that album destroyed the heaviness and bottom end by pushing the volume too loud.

Fuck Metallica, Hetfield, Lars, Give me a break. This band is a total sell out joke. I don't understand why so many people give a shit about this over rated band. Sure they had 4 great albums. But what have they done in the past 20 years that is anything groud breaking? They had a good run in the 80's. What have you done for me lately? Joke band, over rated, over hyped

Go listen to the new Testament, Exodus , Overkill, Kreator, etc if you want quality thrash.

They are doing JUST (and that is too much to say) decent music now, not thrash by any standards, they pretend to be the most metal guys (look at James? live outfit now) but their overall career (except for the 80?s albums) does NOT justice to that term. Exactly, if you want THRASH with capital letters go listen to the aforementioned bands (more: Sodom, Heathen, Destruction, etc.) .

Jason seems like a real cool guy, if a tad... overbearing & very excitable guy... you know the kind that it's like, "Alright dude, calm down a little. Take a breath between sentences!"

Anyway... he's like "I'm Back!" But with what? A website w/ a couple pics & t-shirts? No music or band, nor label/studio/promotional services... I hope the best here cuz I'd be interested to see what he has to offer, but I think it would've been smarter to announce his return to activity w/ something to offer.

Isn't he just looking for attention AGAIN? The Twitter account is nothing more than retweeted ego-inflated back patting. How long before he abandons this thing too? Just like he abandoned Flotsam & Jetsam, Metallica, his fans, Voivod, Supernova, his "Artwork", Papa Wheelie (or is that still going?)! It's hard to trust him after the tenth "comeback". Newsted Heavy Metal? The clock is ticking and funds must be running low cuz he should've just gotten straight to the point and done this ten years ago. Maybe try therapy instead.
