SOUNDGARDEN Singer Remembers Touring With GUNS N' ROSES - Nov. 20, 2012
During a recent interview with Vulture.com, singer Chris Cornell of reunited grunge legends SOUNDGARDEN was asked what he remembers most about opening for GUNS N' ROSES in 1991.

"Without saying anything negative about [GUNS N' ROSES frontman] Axl [Rose], what I remember the most was Duff [McKagan] and Slash and everyone else being regular, sweet, warm guys in a rock band that just wanted to play rock music," he said. "And then, like, there was this 'Wizard Of Oz' character behind the curtain that seemed to complicate what was the most ideal situation they could ever have been in: They were the most successful and famous rock band on the planet. Every single show, hundreds of thousands of fans just wanted to hear songs. For some reason there seemed to be this obstacle in just going out and participating in that. That is what I remember the most. It's sad."

Cornell also spoke about the addiction-related deaths that many people tend to associate with the Seattle grunge scene. "There’s something about losing friends, particularly young people, where it’s not something that you get over," he said. "I don’t believe there's a healing process. How do you, really? In what way can you stop and say, 'Well, it's god's will.' I always thought that line I've heard a million times — twice as bright but half as long — is bullshit. It's tragedy. I just carry all of that with me all the time. All I can do, if anything, out of respect for my friends that are no longer here, is to do my best to lead a good life and and take advantage of the fact that I'm still around, take the opportunities I have that they should've had."

The obstacle was a singer with integrity, who wasn't a corporate whore like his bandmates.

Yeah and look what he won: An empty shell of what could have been the next Rolling Stones. Now they come out late, play to more and more empty seats and take 20 years to make a forgettable album.

He should admit he is friends with Slash and they have collaborated. I read before that Cornell has a not too flattering memory of Slash that he spun positive after he co-wrote a song with him:

"I met Slash in 1992 when G&R took Soundgarden on tour. He was extremely gracious and always very supportive. Often when you tour with a band that are that successful, they treat you like shit. Slash was always a very consistent and amiable person and he is now. And I will say this - and I don't mean this as a slight to him, it's actually a compliment - Slash is the most drunk guitarist I have ever seen play well on stage. I was never able to be that trashed and that good at the same time. That's a part of his consistency: he doesn't drink now and he's still great. That dedication to music is what drives his character."

Drunk? Try more than drunk.

Chris was also friends with Axl, they've just never collaborated. Axl would always compliment Chris back in the day on how powerful of singer Chris was/is. So it has nothing to do with playing favorites as Chris is a straight shooter and is mearly calling it how he sees it.

No wonder Cornell is still awestruck by the Mighty Mighty AXL.
Even back in the day it was clear that the real talent in GNR was AXL.
Hack slash put on a stupid hat to cultivate a legendary status (mission awry) to try and mask his many, many shortcomings as a player, not to mention the fact getting high and pissing himself.
It has been proven that the only constant and the only relevant factor in GNR is AXL, which still results in sold out shows and a larger than life status.
And also he got way better players around him now, hacks & junkies can play for 50 paying fanboys.

So:
FUKK HAKK SLASH, MUFFMEISTER MCLOAD, JUNKIE ADLER & ASSKISSER RIOTACT.

Xhole=GNR!!!
Xhole=GOD!!!

sold out shows and larger than life status? Please get a little reality...Axl was very talented. His legend is still great. An all time front man. No doubt...but that's not really where hes at anymore. Maybe he didn' twant that, but he pulled the plug on being larger than life. The average rock fan doesn't know he's even touring(and Axl fans, that's NOT a diss, just being real).

@mygoodeye

I already demonstrated how Cornell isn't a "straight shooter". He omitted a lot and is "coincidentally" better friends with Slash.
This site always goes after Axl because Slash is on their label Roadrunner which owns Blabbermouth. Evil journos!

HOW many people do you need to write or say the same thing, over and over and over, yet you Axl-Zealots STILL say the same thing. Forget Slash. Let's say Slash was a major dick too, Axl was Still a over the top pain in the ass diva...why do you THINK they were friends with Slash? cuz they liked him. wow, god forbid he might have been a decent guy to other people. Its bizarre how you'll all back Axl like he is your brother?

this doesn't discount Slash was a drunk. Or that Axl had talent, but man, seriously? Metallica, FaithNo More, Blind melon, Management, so on and so forth, ALL say the same. Axl could be a benevolent guy one minute, then pouting and screaming the next...what's the big deal to actually acknowledge that. Don't like Slash(why who knows, seems mellow and low key?) fine, but are you being paid by Axl. this isn't a pro Slash post...its mind boggling though.

Just like the KiSS posts. Axl & Gene/Paul have a cult. Fans that will go to the matt, NO matter what. They are just musicians. Good ones, but flawed guys...how many more stories do you need to hear. you'll keep twisting them. "well he liked Slash"...why do you THINK he collaborated with Slash, cuz he LIKED him! Otherwise he probably wouldn't. Does it bother you others' like duff, or Slash?

You're saying Cornell isn't a stright shooter while you lap up the only journalistic outlet provided by that of Blabbermouth/Roadrunner? Way to utilize those few remaining brain cells. Wake up and read something other than what's on this site.

As for GnR, I saw that tour with Soundgarden in Houston at the Summit in '92. Hardly anyone in the arena for Soundgarden (I was a big fan at the time, so made sure to be their early). I actually saw both of them later that same year the same weekend in Houston, but with Metallica and Faith No More one day, and PJ, Soundgarden, Ministry, RHCP, and more at Lolla II the next. THAT was a fucking weekend.

You just gotta love the Axl nutswingers. Literally everybody that's ever interacted with him has, aside from the guys currently on his payroll, had pretty much the exact same thing to say. But, no, all those guys are wrong. Everybody's wrong but Axl. LOL. The Axl crowd is the very definition of Cognitive Dissonance.

The "wizard of Oz" character behind the curtain. A great way to put it.

But no, Slash is the bad guy because he used to party (and still put on a better and more reliable show than Axl). Slash is the bad guy for being an actual musician and collaborating with other musicians. You wanna compare Slash's musical productivity over the last 20 years to Axl's? It's not even close. Slash has put out a ton of material, both on his own records or on other people's. Axl spent the last 20 years doing his best Howard Hughes impersonation.

Gn'R could have been the next Rolling Stones.

"Slash has put out a ton of material, both on his own records or on other people's. Axl spent the last 20 years doing his best Howard Hughes impersonation."

This is exactly what the Axl fanboys will never be able to argue against. Whether you like Slash's post-GNR material or not, he's consistently been productive. Axl on the other hand has put out one album in 20 years. Slash left GNR 16 years ago. What has Axl done since he's been free of the Slash?

Another fact that the Axl fanboys will never be able to explain away, is that Slash is not the only guy to leave Axl. Slash may have very well been the cancer that Axl says he was, but that doesn't explain away why Izzy, Duff and Adler are no longer there. And to a lesser extent, Gilby and Sorum.

They go after Axl because he is a primadona who so many other fellow musicians criticized for his lack of professionalism, and strange antics. That does not mean he is not talented, but Axl is quirky, something other touring bands have commented on.

what does being a corporate whore have to do with liking Axl Rose. Remember when he read the Axl Rose backstage rider? he was doing that for the camera. If he liked Axl, you think he'd be shitting on him like that? Seriously? Axl's behavior on the night in Montreal when Hetfield got badly burned, that was all made up for selling more records?...

Axl was a diva for the whole world to see. he did this nearly every other night. I didn't need to hear one word from a band, I saw it myself. He was a douch. a whiny brat. what's to like about that? Has nothing to do with being pro Slash or Axl. Cuz I had though Axl was a great front man, in a great band. He ruined it. 100%. Each member had had enough. what is even to doubt about that? its documented. Fans saw it with their own eyes. I did. would you close your eyes? and just say "well Slash's a junkie".

Nobody even read the second part of the Blabbermouth post which actually means a bit more... shame. So I'll quote the only part of this article I care about... as I personally don't believe 'God's Will'

"I don’t believe there's a healing process. How do you, really? In what way can you stop and say, 'Well, it's god's will.' I always thought that line I've heard a million times — twice as bright but half as long — is bullshit. It's tragedy.''

Yeah, Axl was such an anti-corporate rebel doing Jimmy Kimmel a couple of weeks ago. And such a rebellious spirit doing the Vegas Residency. Dating supermodel Stephanie Seymour.....SO anti-establishment. How about his early 90's fondness for wearing Armani and Versacci onstage during the UYI tour, man what non-sellout move that was. The the driving force of elaborate and monumentally expensive concept videos like November Rain (featuring said supermodel) and Estranged.....purely a move to thumb his nose at the corporate rock/MTV agenda. How about playing all those MTV Awards shows, at one of which playing said elaborate concept song with Elton John? A genius move to bow out of the mainstream.

Getting the point by now, ShadowOfTheWave? You're about 110% full of shit. Now go take your afternoon nap while the rest of us that were actually out of diapers during that era and old enough to be into that scene as it happened discuss the reality of what went on.

Axl was on MTV 24/7 in the 90s. He left the spot light for 15 years due to other reasons. There is, and definintely wasn't anything counter culture or rebellious about Axl Rose in 1992. all the costume changes, it was like a male Cher. He became everything he championed against in 1987...the whole band was as corporate as it gets, they were good, but they lost the plot.

The point too ShadowofaWave makes is to create a diversion...COrnell says Slash was a good guy, Axl was, well...and Axl apologist say "well James Hetfield and Slash are whores". and? what's that have AnYTHING to do with Axl's bad behavior? Nothing. Stick to the theme.

No doubt, i'd advise Shadow to check out the Live in Japan dvd from the 1992 tour, as he was either not around to witness that era or was/is in complete denial. Costume changes literally every single song.

but I think it's all best summed up by saying that Axl Rose is a retarded fuckin' asshole, who can't sing worth crap, who is extremely lucky to be even somewhat famous, and who continues to shit on his fans.
