OPETH Guitarist Discusses 'Heritage' Album 'Controversy' In New Interview - Nov. 20, 2012
Mark Holmes of Metal Discovery conducted an interview with guitarist Fredrik Åkesson of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH on November 12 in Nottingham, England. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metal Discovery: There was initially a bit of a stir caused by [the latest OPETH album] "Heritage" last year amongst longstanding OPETH fans with the absence of death vocals but album sales and glowing reviews didn't reflect that. Do you think some people lost sight of the fact that OPETH are a genuinely progressive band who actually progress?

Fredrik: I can understand that point of view, but [OPETH frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt] writes most of the material and he really felt that the band needed to do something very different to still go on. I think a lot of the fans probably believed he wouldn't play any more of the death metal stuff… which we did on the first tour; we didn't play any. But this heavy set we'll play tonight, I think a lot of the old-school fans will be very pleased with it.

Metal Discovery: I was at the Birmingham show last year and there seemed to be more controversy about having no death vocals in the set than the controversy caused by the album, and you could hear people shouting out, "Play heavier stuff"… which is where, I think, some people missed the point because some of the tracks were still very heavy but just lacking the death growls...

Fredrik: That spanned the whole tour, and I'm kind of proud that we fulfilled it and did a step back, because now we're doing an entirely different set. I think that's probably as far as you can take it if you just want to do a concept. But, then again, on this tour we do a set without the growls as well when we play the Union Chapel in London.

Metal Discovery: Did you get heckled much during the tour last year with just the clean-vocal set?

Fredrik: No, I think it was very well accepted. There were a few incidents, more in America maybe. Some guy screamed to Mikael, "I challenge you to a duel!" What?! But, overall, a lot of people who listen to OPETH are pretty open-minded and understand. It seems like that. A lot of people still showed up to the concerts. I mean, of course, it takes a while, I would say. When we started the "Heritage" tour in America, when the album had just been released, it took people a while to digest this kind of style of the "Heritage" album.

Metal Discovery: Do you think that's the same for each new OPETH album anyway, because the music is challenging and takes time to… like if the album's released one week and then the next week you're on tour, people aren't so familiar with the material so it always takes time?

Fredrik: Yeah, and you can clearly notice that later on during the tour as it progresses, like three or four weeks later, people were more into the songs because they're more familiar with them.

Metal Discovery: Being as successful as you are, do you think OPETH have helped changed people's opinions about what it should mean to be regarded as a progressive band in the twenty first century — that is, a band that actually progresses rather than imitates itself or previous progressive bands?

Fredrik: Yeah, I think since Mikael is such a huge collector, if he's in different magazines he's very highly featured in talking about old bands that he's into. So I think there's a lot of OPETH fans he's opened new musical doors to. Absolutely. And also the OPETH style, if that's what you're referring to, it's definitely prog-ish, but it's still metal as well.

Metal Discovery: Yeah, it's prog-metal in essence. But a lot of so called prog-metal bands just imitate other prog-metal bands, like DREAM THEATER clones and whatever. OPETH are one of the bands, probably one of the few bands, who are genuinely progressive.

Fredrik: Yeah, and when we were working on "Heritage", Mikael wrote songs in the beginning that he felt was starting to imitate himself so that was also one of the reasons why "Heritage" came about.

TALK ABOUT A BAND THAT SHOT THEMSELVES IN THE FOOT.
DEATH METAL IS DEATH METAL. AND IT'S VOCALS SHOULD BE DONE IN A DEATH METAL STYLE.

BUT MIKE WANTS TO BE LIKE KING CRIMSON. AND BECAUSE OF IT, HE'S LOSING RESPECT AND INTEREST FROM HIS FANS.

SO I'M GONNA GO PUT ON MY KING CRIMSON ALBUM ON NOW.

Most of the people who cried about the absence of growls simply cannot digest other forms of music, let alone digest the fact a band can evolve in and out of its security zone.

Close-minded open-mindedness, you would say?

With that gone the clean stuff just isn't all that impressive, especially in a live setting, especially when you have a band as good as katatonia opening up. I'm among the minority when I say they started to lose it after still life. Backwater park was good but it became the blueprint for everything that followed, mikael found a formula and stuck with it. I agree they needed a big change, just not sure this was the right one. Maybe creating shorter songs but keeping the contrast would be fun exercise, sorta like what Metallica did with the black album but not, if you get my drift. I always though my arms your hearse was heading in that direction anyway.

I disagree... their heavy stuff wasn't that interesting, a lot of technical death metal bands do that far better than Opeth... but Opeth has awesome prog elements, by dropping the pedestrian death elements they've capitalised on their strengths.

I always thought opeth's heavy stuff was way more original and had much more heart than the technical death bands with the crazy fast arpeggio stuff, that no feeling stuff never appealed to me, in any format

I got into Opeth around Morningrise, and I loved them. Got Orchid quickly, then came MAYH, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance...I found them just utterly amazing and thought they were the best thing happening in "new" metal. Damnation happened, and I still thought so...but by the time Ghost Reveries hit, I thought that, I don't know, maybe it was a missed step, but I thought it was a bit formulaic. I found Watershed also formulaic, but better than Ghost Reveries....and I abhor Heritage with a passion. I'm glad I only downloaded it through eMusic. To me, it was just utterly vapid, essentially musical masturbation to King Crimson fantasies with a dash of Yes thrown in for good measure. I listened to it once and have never went back to it.

I'd like to say that I'm a bit more optimistic about Opeth's future, but...in all honesty, in my opinion, they had their moment, it was a fantastic moment, and the moment's gone.

As always, I hate the "get it" comments ... like you are some genius and the rest of us just can't keep up.

It's not the growls/burps ... I believe Wild Rover of Hell hit it right on the head, at least for the sound of the disc. Katatonia does it better, in my opinion, miles better ... as does Novembre.

In my OPINION, it is just not a very good disc ... it is dull and artsy. For those of you that "get it," good for you. To me, their soft melodic songs were excellent (Benighted comes to mind, as does Face of Melinda) ... when the whole disc wasn't dedicated to them. For some reason Damnation and this one just don't do much for me.

Again, in my OPINION, for a better disc from a heavy band that went all soft ... Borknagar's Origin comes to mind.

However, they could give fuck-all my opinion ... they made more cash, then they were RIGHT. It is also their band, so they can do what they want. Those of you that "get it" will probably get to enjoy this sound until the end of the band.

VOIVOD!

Heritage is the only Opeth CD I have ever bought. I bought it because of the new style of vocals and change in musical direction. I hope they continue in this type of style for a bit. awesome CD. Not into the death growls at all.

I've always loved Opeths heaviest tracks with guttural vocals. I was very presently surprised by Heritage. I love the old progressive jazzy feel to the record.

I totally get why people hate the record. I won't argue with any of them at all. I personally just love the chilled vibe of it.

Really, I think Opeth should of disbanded at least and called the band something else like Mikael for thier softer tones. Its like Opeth is trying to be something they are not. No use trying to make a bear into a bunny, it doesnt work with fans.

My friends and I had a blast watching them do their clean-vocal set, while we laughed at all the people who were whining and complaining and posting angry messages on Facebook that they wouldn't play anything with growls. They put on an awesome show.
This one bitch was all like: "Where's Bloodbath!??" I was all "shut up bitch, no death growls for you!" KATATONNNIIAAAA!

Watershed blew and Heritage was a hot mess. After Ghost Reveries, Akerfeldt should have changed the name of the band to Mikael and the Yes Men.

When peter quit the band! Each cd after pete's exit have sucked on different levels. The last one was boring to listen to with no heavy guitars! If you want to put out sleepy prog music instead of what Opeth used to play then change the name of the band. You can't say it's Opeth when you want to be a sell out piece of crap! The fans know your a sell out so just change the name.

Opeth continues to create & evolve you can't stay with the same formula your whole life otherwise you'll get stuck with the same bullshit. Heritage is the beggining to a new age of amazing music being conducted! Just face it mikael & opeth have always made music regardless what you fools think. So believe me when I say this ... Thy do not need your ignorant approval ... If you want to listen to nonsense untalented death metal you have devil driver , if you want we'll thought out music continue to listen to opeth ... ¡Viva opeth! \m/

A lot of the controversy and anger comes from not having death vocals. That wasn't a problem for me since I loved Damnation. The difference between records is band members (Peter and Martin). Opeth is now a Mikael solo project and I do not like it. And to top that Per is now leaving.

I like both styles they have done as it refreshing to hear a band evolve and write this way. Unfortunately its a slap in the face to the back catalog and slightly ignorant to only play the newer material in a live setting like they did on the Katatonia tour. A lot of us grew up on Blackwater etc . The mastadon outing the ended with older stuff. a mash up would be nice.

Did not really like Heritage and it had nothing to do with the lack of Death Metal vocals. I liked Damnation and plenty of bands that do not employ DM vocals. When I heard about controversy that there would be no DM vocals, I was okay with that. I think every band singing the same has got kind of corny, and repetetive.

Nonethless, Heritage had like 3 good tracks, and a lot of prog-slog that was kind of boring. I like prog, but found Heritage to be meandering at times.

Up until that, I was happy with every other Opeth CD.

I just bought the Death Spiritual Healing double disk, fucking awesome. Man, these songs are in my bones. The rehearsal tunes are a treasure. They actually have more energy than the final versions. It's too bad we don't have Death anymore, didn't realize what we had when it was still around. Opeth won't be around forever too, enjoy it and stop complaining.

its not a close mind that discovers they love the chocolate cake that their local baker, bakes. you come to that baker year after year for that chocolate cake specifically.

then the baker fucks up one day. he changes the recipe. your cake is now gone forever. its not that he decided to make that same cake you love AND a new brand of cake, it's that he no longer makes the original.

mike threw the original recipe for opeth right out the window. side project where he wants to sound like "rainbow" or "king crimson"? great. fine. get it out of yer system. abandoning what was one of the greatest formulas for a band that metal has ever seen?

bad fucking move.

As an long-time Opeth fan, I did not care for Heritage. I think the album was well executed and I can appreciate them trying something a bit different but it wasn't my cup of tea. I did enjoy seeing the Heritage tracks performed live though and thought the show was fantastic. Sometimes an album just works better live for some people (at least in my case).

That all being said, I think it's unfair to assume that if someone doesn't like Heritage, he/she is automatically a one-dimensional, closed-minded metal drone who is unable to love and appreciate non-metal styles of music.

How can not liking ONE album completely define a person's taste in music? It can't. While Heritage isn't an album I'll spin frequently, it doesn't mean I don't love going to operas, attending symphonies, checking out jazz performances, hanging out at a folk festival, or rocking out at a metal gig.

Relax people, it's just an album!

Mikael = Opeth. So if Mikael's attitude towards life changes, it's a sure bet that Opeth's attitude as a band will change accordingly.

People act like they "own" bands. It's kind of like the though is "We got you where you are... now stay put!"

fans are 1/2 the reason for a bands success... the other 1/2 is the bands hard work & determination, so it's a bit selfish when "fans" get super upset about shifts in style

At first listen to Heritage I was like "WTF is this?" But after a few more listens I now feel it's one of their best albums. Similar thing happened w/ Katatonia's Great Cold Distance. At first I couldn't get it as I was so used to their previous couple albums, but when it finally clicked, it set something off in me and made me feel about music in a totally new way... listened to it almost every day for a full year, and I still listen to it a lot.
