METALLICA Takes Ownership Of Its Masters, Launches New Record Label - Nov. 30, 2012
METALLICA announced today that they have taken ownership of all their master recordings including all music and long-form videos, a move almost unprecedented for musicians signed to recording contracts. Under provision of their renegotiated joint venture agreement with the Warner Music Group in 1994, all masters revert back to the band as of today, November 30, 2012.

"We would like to thank everyone at the Warner Music Group for 28 years of a fantastic relationship, particularly since 1994 where we truly felt we had partners in every aspect of our business in North America," said the band's James Hetfield.

METALLICA also announced the launch of their new record label, Blackened Recordings. Blackened Recordings was created by the band as a home for all of their recordings, both audio and visual, and anything else that suits them. Blackened Recordings will handle all marketing and promotion duties and will enter into a deal with Rhino Entertainment, who will manufacture and distribute its releases in North America. Blackened Recordings will license their releases to the Universal Music Group internationally.

"It's always been about control for us as a band," said METALLICA's Lars Ulrich. "Forming Blackened Recordings is the ultimate in independence, giving us 100% control and putting us in the driver's seat of our own creative destiny."

The first release from Blackened will be "Quebec Magnetic" on Monday, December 10, 2012. "Quebec Magnetic" is a live DVD capturing the two World Magnetic live shows from Quebec City in the fall of 2009. The setlist for the DVD was voted on by over 35,000 fans at Metallica.com this past September. Fans can order it from the band's web site, www.metallica.com.

A message from METALLICA to the band's fans: "We like to make it a point here not to bore you with the not-so-exciting business aspects of making and sharing music, but we're so psyched about our new adventure that we just had to tell you about it as we officially launch our very own record label, Blackened Recordings.

"Some of you, who have followed along throughout the years, are aware that in 1994 we renegotiated our contract with the Warner Music Group, which resulted in a joint venture with our record company for releasing all of our recordings including longform videos. Per that agreement, as of today we have taken ownership of all of our master recordings and Blackened Recordings will be the home of all of our current albums and videos along with all future releases including the December 10 release of the 'Quebec Magnetic' DVD and Blu-ray.

"You may have heard us say it once or twice or a thousand times before, but it's always been about us taking control of all things 'TALLICA to give you 110% on every single level every single time. Forming Blackened Recordings is the ultimate in independence, putting us in the driver's seat of our own creative destiny. We're looking forward to making more music and getting it all out to you in our own unique way."

You can hate them all you want but they are where they are because of choices they've made. They are bigger, and richer than anyone else that started when they did and I say good for them! Everyone gets in the music BUSINESS to make money and they are great at it.

For a band of legendary stature, this is pretty amazing. Most major bands don't own or control their masters because they took a monster sized advance & gave up control. Wish this would incentivize a good new 'Tallica album. But I doubt it.

Motley was actually pretty guerilla in their tactics to get Elektra Records to turn over their master tapes back to the band.

The label head at the time, Sylvia Rhone, didn't really give that much of a shit for Motley by the time of 'Generationm Swine'. They made enough of an unpleasant stink for Sylvia Rhone to say 'fuck it', handing over the Motley master tapes back to the band.

Owning and being able to control your master tapes is among the best positions any band, etc. can be in. I read something one time that Motley actually sold more records since getting their masters back because Elektra wasn't stocking up on the albums for the record stores even then.

Someone made an interesting point about maybe the new Metallica stuff being more affordable on their own record label. This might prove to be true. It's an ace move to have found a way to secure your master tapes so long ago (1994). Good for you, Metallica. Congrats on getting all of your master tapes and video back. Good Luck with Blackened Recordings. Peace.

don't be so bitter man. chill out, everything's gonna be fine. we all know death magnetic wasn't as good as one of the first four albums (how could it be? really?), but for a band that made those classics, the self-titled one, load & reload and lost a bit of their way on st anger, they're doing pretty fucking good for a band that's been going since the beginning of the 80s.

there's 5 good songs on it, IMO... beyond that, sonically it's shit. The mix blows. The lyrics are better than the last few releases but still kind of contrived. It's a return to form, yeah but sounds very forced & very cut & paste at times... I've listened to it countless times now and, while I like it, it doesn't compare with '83 - '88 which is what they were shooting for. So in that respect it's a FAIL, but still is an alright album.

Oh forget it, my butt hurts. Nevermind.

Now go back and remix And Justice for All to include audible bass parts. If some 18 year old kid can do it on Youtube, I know you can.

dude, this is some serious fuckin shit. I don't think a lot of people reading this article , understood the real meaning of it.

Fuckin think about what they just said.

"Forming Blackened Recordings is the ultimate in independence, putting us in the driver's seat of our own creative destiny"

Warner is all about selling records so forced Metallica to go out of their way a little bit more to sell more records and that's why we the real fans got Load and ReLoad, St Anger, etc But now they have their own record company and that means that they have no boundaries and release more of the real shit they are made of. All the 80's motherfuckin era!!! THere's no lose for them becuase they own their fuckin music + they're rich as fuck already.

If the have the liberty to write a second master piece like Master of Puppets. What if they call it Lord of Puppets this time and it sounded twice as good??

Badass....

If you're insinuating that they purposely released shit fucking albums for 20 years just to fill a record contract at the expense and disapointment of their fans, then well...you're fucking high... and if you think everything will magically change now and they'll suddenly become as good as Overkill or Testament, well... then you're REALLY fucking high and shouls probably find a doctor.

I'm roughly the same age as the band members, and I know I feel different at 45 than I did at 15. Metallica will continue to suck, just independently now! :)

Dear Metallica,

5.1 mixes would rule.

A remix of Justice is badly needed, but you knew that already.

Please sign Flotsam and Jetsam as mentioned above. They have been screwed time and time again but will not give up and are days away from releasing yet another masterpiece directly funded by their fans. They need a real push from those who can get it done.

Personally, I have no problem with ultra-hyper-megacollosal-super deluxe box sets (along the vein of what was done for Peace Sells) and would absolutely buy KEA through Black.

I know you guys have insane overhead costs, but three of those items would take care of that for some time.

What is exciting is that Metallica often paves the way for other bands to act accordingly. They just proved to everyone that it's better to handle everything yourself as otherwise you allow other people, outsiders, to put their dirty fingers into your craft.

Obviously Metallica can do such a move because they,re rich and well-known. Most underground bands will still salivate when offered a substantial advance. Yet, they at least show the world that a band can go on without greedy corporates calling the shots. For once, musicians hold the cords of their wallets.

And all my hails to Tom Warrior for doing this years ahead of Metallica :)

for once. This is nothing short of amazing. You hear artists speak all of the time about finding out later what the record company did with the recordings after it was completed and in the can. Warner specifically did things to Zappa and Van Halen back in the day that pi$$ed them off. Most bands didn't find out until the release party that they took out distortion, basslines, lyrics etc...

Getting their backlog might also mean getting the original tapes too. Who knows, Load might have originally sounded harder than MoP. J/K, but getting away from a big profit organization like Warner can't hurt things.

...And justice for all with Robert Trujillo? Wouldn't surprise me. And he's done it before.

You think Lars or James give a fat, frog's ass about their fans? This band had their day and it was decades ago. I'm sure they'll soon have more crap with their name on it than KISS. They'll pump out re-master after re-master of the same album and the minions will buy it with no questions asked. Lars said it himself up above. "...We're looking forward to making more music and getting it all out to you in our own unique way." Start working that 2nd job.

I might be one of the few or maybe the only one who do not care for remastering And Justice For All. I like it the way it is, makes it more raw & cold in away, but that's just me.

How about a remix of Cliff Burton' accident with the other 4 members of Metallica involved this time. All crushed of course, in 5.1 surround.....

Nice move on Metallica's front, so now can I get a remastered copy of Puppets? I would rebuy that album in a heart beat.

I don't know why any huge band wouldn't create their own label. Metallica has always been very good at keeping their stuff to themselves. I know Lars made the internet cry with his Napster business, but it was coming from the same place as what Blackened Recordings is now. If you don't fight for your income as a band (millionaires or piss-poor bar band), you will get taken for every last cent.

The question is...

Will Metallica stand by their message of "The $5.98 EP. Do NOT pay more!"

Why people want Metallica's old records remastered?. Atleast in my opinion their old albums should never be remastered. The only record I think could have been better mixed is death magnetic.Yes some will say And Justice For All had no bass at all but it actually did but a really low mix that gave the album a totally different vibe which I actually liked..I love old school metal sound ..,

The first 3 albums are just fine. Flem did some fine production on them. Justice, maaybe more bass in there.

Like RiotAct666 said, just make another Thrash album again. It's been waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too long since they've released anything CLOSE to a Thrash album.

say what you will about Lars, but that guys has been brilliant on the business side of things. Hopefully having a their own record label means that there's going to be a 'record' to distribute it through sometime soon-ish. I enjoyed most of Death Magnetic and about half of Beyond Magnetic. The Deep Purple cover was brilliant so I hope they continue with that trajectory (yes, I'm intentionally pretending that Lulu never existed)

Here's the plan for the masters:

1) Delete Death Magnetic
