LED ZEPPELIN Interviewed On 'The Late Show With David Letterman' (Video) - Dec. 4, 2012
The surviving members of LED ZEPPELIN appeared last night (Monday, December 3) on CBS' "The Late Show With David Letterman". The three — Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones — who, along with Letterman, were awarded the Kennedy Center Honor on Saturday night (December 1) in Washington, D.C. —chatted with Letterman — but did not perform.

Asked if they had considered carrying on following the 1980 death of their drummer, John Bonham, Page said, "No. The fact was that we had the records out and then we'd put the songs into the set; it was almost like another beginning, a second wind for the songs, because they were changing every night with the improvisation we were putting in. There was no way with the amount of work and mutation that had gone on with those songs that we could say to another drummer, 'Well, can you learn this bit and learn that bit?'; it just wouldn't work."

The Kennedy Center Honors will air on CBS on December 26. Check your local listings for stations and times.

The bandmembers are promoting their new live collection, "Celebration Day", which features ZEPPELIN's entire 2007 London reunion concert.

Plant has been the lone holdout for another LED ZEPPELIN reunion. Despite promoters essentially offering the band a blank check for a series of concerts, Plant remains committed to his new musical direction in the "Americana" field. "I hate to say it, but it felt young," he said. "It felt like I didn't know what was going to happen next, and it didn't really matter — and that was the great thing. I know the songs that I like and the songs that I always attach myself to have been of a certain genre, if they're not self-penned. And I was in very good company with people who had a very familiar lean in the same direction."

As I was not around when these guys were playing I would love to see them reform. I think it would be the biggest tour of all time if the did. Plant seems to be the stumbling block

John Paul Jones is hysterical. Great to see them together, Letterman was a bit lame with them unfortunately.

We'll probably never see a tour but it'd be great if they played one in the States one last time.

...the UK didn't really take to them. It was the US where they becaome superstars (hence the title of "How the West Was Won").

Zep's success was an American one.

All that Crowley worshipping did a number on Page's face. it turned him into a chinaman.

All joking aside. Legends.

Oddly, As a kid in the 80's, watching Jimmy Page (T.S.R.T.S video) and his presence on stage. The way he looked, made me pic up the guitar. Then his unbelievable guitar work.

The way I see it, Robert Plant knows he can't keep up to those old songs. After all these years he just doesn't have the chops. I would love to see it happen but his long term reluctance begins to become suspect. I am all for him being 'dedicated to his craft' but they have been waving !$! at this forever!! Hell, if Van Halen can get together and play a tour.....

They sat closest to Dave in order of remaining talent/skill/ability. Seriously, Led Zeppelin, you're not funny, stop trying to be....the whole segment was uncomfortable. NO wonder they used to be so elusive in the past.

you guys are critical.

These guys are almost in their 70's, of course they lose the skill they used to have. The segment was a bit uncomfortable, but it didn't bother me. Fuck, it's Led Zeppelin. Thousands if not millions of bands since worship these guys. The Kennedy Center Honors are what should be in a long line of honors these guys SHOULD get and deserve. Probably one of a rare sort of band you can put on and it STILL sounds fresh as it did the day it was released.

Of course I'm a fan. Been one since 1977.

I'd put them over the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Who, or any other British invasion band you can come up with. Yeah they were bluesy, but fuck they were heavy. Which is the most important thing to me.

Well deserved, congrats guys.

they are fantastic...but for people bashing Plant for turning down a reunion, the fact they are 70 is EXACTLY why he doesn't want to do it. People are saying here "Zep, you're not funny, you're old, etc"...and Plant wants to keep that brilliant Legacy in tact. They can't live up to that legacy at their age. and Plant doesn't want to try to sing like that. He does indeed do Zep songs live, but he does them in a folky type way. That suits him, his voice.

They are definitely one of the alltime greats, understatement there.

I have nothing but love & respect for these guys...they've given us some of the best rock n roll ever. How anyone can sit here and shit in their cheerios is beyond me. I understand being upset that there's no tour in the forseeable future, but to blatantly disrespect these guys for that is rather classless.

Plant does not want to do a reunion tour then fine but then stop ruining the Zep classics by doing them "your" way. nobody wants to hear them done in a folk song way and nobody wants to hear you do folk music either for that matter but your name earned thru the work with Zep is what draws people to your shows. it pisses me off when people like Plant and others suddenly decide they want to do the music they have always wanted to do now that they are rich beyond their wildest dreams and can do what they want without worrying about sales. if you always wanted to play this music then why wait til now to do it? because you were to busy becomning rich and famous and leading rock star lifestyle that's why.

Laggerlug, the Archie Bunker of blabbermouth...Plant didn't have a choice but to forge out on his own...and he also didn't want to rely, and lean on Led Zep, he had many ideas. His first few solo albums are quite good...but he should have just gone out and done Zep tunes?

He's actually someone that still wants to be an artist, create, not just go out and pretend he's 25.

if anything, he DOESN"T live the rock star life style anymore. He did a blue grass album for crying out loud. Don't like it, fine, I realize you're into such stellar rock as Solo Sammy Hagar and Loverboy, but you're pissing on a guy trying to still be creative. He's 64. he admits to enjoy playing more laid back music. I mean, what's the problem?

as much as I love the band(Zep), Celebration day is NOT fantastic start to finish. his voice, their energy, works on some songs. Kashmir, for one, sounds great. So does Plant. Song remains the Same, Ramble on, GTBTimes, not so much.

But you're right, Plant should keep in mind people like you before he makes a new album.

Plant is a snake, I haven't seen a bad show from him. Will I see him play again? Not sure. It's ok to be folksy, but be original folksy.

I'd like to hear more from Jimmy, he's a dynamic, fluid player - but he doesn't have to do anything if he doesn't want too.

So be glad for what you get.

And for all the shit talking about the way they look: THEY'RE OLD! How the fuck are they supposed to look? Do you think you'll look any better when you reach that age? I don't think so.

John Paul Jones looked like he really didn't want to be the guy closest to the desk, but he did in fact have the best lines. It was like those old Beatle interviews where they would respond to questions with zingers.

It is a shame we probably won't see them live again, but IMO, they really ended at their peak and walked away with an untarnished legacy. I mean back then who could have drummed their way through that. You had the Who in the same predicament and their stuff was pretty weak in the 80s. Zep avoided that and you gotta respect that they hold their legacy in such high regard.

I understand why they do not tour and respect that. Bonzo was Robert's best friend, and Plant got him to join Zep don't forget. Sure hundreds of drummers could play the songs, but its still not the same, we ARE dealing with human beings here. Besides his obvious natural voice limitations, no 70 yr old can sing vintage Zep. Let it be, the monster that was Led Zeppelin went out #1 and still is.

These guys are true superstars with real star quality, not the normal half assed hacks that Letterman has on. They came off great, SLICK AS FUCK. Jimmy is so honest and real when he speaks. Not a fake bone in their bodies. And Plant kicks ass Celebration Day, he CRUSHES on "Trampled Underfoot" and "In My Time Of Dying" from the new blu-ray, his voice sounds like it did on Physical Graffiti on, he knows what he's doing. And what can you say about John Paul fucking Jones, the best bassist on the planet, and one of the besy keyboardists, all 3 are an encylopedia of styles and musical knowledge. THESE GUYS ARE NOT NORMAL, head and shoulders more creative and REAL than the rest.
