KORN, SLAYER, STAIND, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH Members Talk PANTERA - Dec. 5, 2012
On December 8, it will be eight years since PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was tragically taken from us. However, ARTISTDirect.com editor-in-chief Rick Florino decided to ask a myriad of artists about PANTERA's impact on them. So many of them cite "Vulgar Display Of Power", celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, as a life-changing milestone.

In ARTISTDirect.com's exclusive feature, KORN, ROB ZOMBIE, SLIPKNOT, SLAYER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, MASTODON, GOJIRA, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH and more share thoughts and memories on PANTERA. A few excerpts follow below.

Jonathan Davis (KORN): "I remembering hearing the groove metal, crunchy guitars, and Philip Anselmo going off. There was this intense aggression, but you could move and dance to the music. I absolutely loved that groove element. 'Vulgar Display Of Power' really got me into metal. HELMET was another one of those bands along with PRONG. I love swinging groove, and PANTERA were the kings of that. Every time KORN played in Dallas, Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul would come out and see our shows. They were good times. Dimebag did not deserve what he got. I got to sit down with Philip one time, and I just thanked him. I said, 'You're the one who inspired me to do metal music, and I just want to thank you.' He was like, 'Man, that's crazy!' I like all of his side projects too. There's one band he did called CHRIST INVERSION which is crazy, satanic evil music. It's really cool and dark."

Kerry King (SLAYER): "The first time I heard PANTERA was at a club they were playing. We were going through Texas, and it was a day off before we actually played. I can't remember if somebody suggested we go there or if we ended up there. That's how it went down. That was before 'Power Metal'. Philip was in the band, but I don't think the album was out yet. Philip was awesome, and Dime was awesome. I'm a guitar and vocal kind of guy. I'm extremely happy we were able to do a PANTERA run. At the end of the day, it was the last PANTERA run. I'm glad we got to make that happen. Dime and I wanted to tour together forever. After that, we did some of DAMAGEPLAN's last run. We had a lot of experience with the PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN boys."

Mike Mushok (STAIND): "The first time I heard PANTERA was 'Vulgar Display Of Power'. The same friend who introduced me to METALLICA played it for me. I remember going out and buying it as soon as I could. It's funny because a friend of mine had 'Power Metal', the album before 'Cowboys From Hell'. I was like, 'This is the same band?!' After I got 'Vulgar', I went back and got 'Cowboys From Hell'. I definitely wore out those records. We never played with PANTERA. We played with DAMAGEPLAN a couple of times though. In fact, about six weeks before what happened in Ohio, we were playing in Albuquerque, and it was a fly date for the DAMAGEPLAN guys. I spent the day hanging out with Dimebag Darrell. I remember the last thing I said to him. I've never done this either. He was watching our set from the side of the stage. They were getting ready to leave and catch a flight. I walked across the stage in between songs and said, 'I can't tell you how much of an honor it is for me to have you standing here right now.' To me, he's one of the best. That was the last thing I said to him and the last time I saw him. I was thankful for that day and the few times I got to hang out with him because he really was a beautiful person. I never talk to anybody during a set. Looking over and seeing him standing there while we were playing meant a ton to me. They're a band we used to cover. I watched all of their videos. PANTERA were just amazing. They were a big influence."

Ivan Moody (FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH): "I don't think there will ever be a band that compares to PANTERA. In my book, they are the icon metal band of all time. Their catalog speaks for itself. What the four of those guys did for music in general is beyond incredible. Philip's lyrical ability and what Dimebag did as player are incredible. There is no torch to be handed down from PANTERA. PANTERA is one of our biggest influences as it should be for anyone who listens to rock 'n' roll. I first heard PANTERA after getting out of a detention center as a kid. I caused a little mischief. I had a Walkman at the time, and I went to a store. I saw this cassette on the shelf, and it said 'Cowboys From Hell'. I was like, 'Dude, that's badass.' There were only two copies of it so I knew it was underground at the time. The second I put it in, my entire life changed. My soul lit up. My eyes turned red. That was it for me. They'd become the greatest band on earth to me. You go down the line on the CD and get to 'Cemetery Gates'. I just freaked out like, 'Wow, somebody can make good rock 'n' roll and still incorporate extremely painful misery and have a sense of relief.' They kept getting bigger and better from there. My god, 'Vulgar Display Of Power' is still one of the greatest albums ever. Of course, my favorite is 'Far Beyond Driven'. They just nailed it on 'The Great Southern Trendkill' too. Anytime I saw that band live, it was absolutely jaw-dropping. I've never had an experience like that, and I've seen thousands of bands from RAMMSTEIN, TOOL, and METALLICA to SLIPKNOT and KORN. Those are all phenomenal acts, but I never missed a PANTERA show. PANTERA was the beginning and end for me."

Seeing Pantera live was like a religious experience. The energy at every show impacted you for days. For those of you that did not get a chance to see them, you really missed out. I've been a fanatic of theirs since 1989 and miss them a lot. RIP DIME

to Pantera. Long live the kings.
Very influential during my teen years. Had a chance to see them a couple of times during the mid '90s. Missed out though.
Did see dimebag/Damageplan in San Antonio in summer of '04.
RIP

Those PanterA live shows will never be matched by any band. I think Slipknot got close during their 1st run off the self titled as far as craziness within the crowd goes, but man those PanterA shows were insane. I saw PanterA live like 9 times. I mean they got everyone off. Nowadays you go see a live show...sure there are those older dudes who wanna sip the beer and chill and not mosh and shove and get too wild. But during those Pantera days...if that same dude got shoved..spilled his beer and had dudes crowd surfing over him...it would set him off and he would then get in the pit and let out his aggression. So you would have a crowded room full of energy and people losing their mind.

Nowadays you have crowds of people doing spin kicks..spinning their arms...punching at the ground...crabwalking to breakdowns every other minute...and gang shouting about something. Even Lamb of God, Metallica, Slipknot...and extreme metal bands crowds are tamer these days it seems. Yeah you have your wild ones..but it seems like the number is smaller compared to PanterA shows.

Anyone who listens to metal and rock music and thinks PanterA is shitty band is a complete shitty moron. It's not rocket science.

Korn is not metal. But they're not rock either. They're more like a hybrid band. Something 'new' sounding. Or if you're really trendy - 'nu'.... Something I would call... I dunno... 'nu metal'?

I agree. I can't stand all the bands here in my state that try to sound like PanterA. Its one thing to have a riff here and there that sounds like a nod...or have the influence of them....but some of these dudes go so far as to look just like dime...look just like phil...clothing..hairstyle and all.. straight down to the music gear.

he listens/ed to a lot of shit. Some musicians have great taste in what they listen to, but when it comes to their own band it makes you scratch your head and go wtf? Korn were never my favorite, but to their credit, they carved their own niche and do have SOME heavy grooving songs.

the live shows. Ozzfest 97 @ Deer Creek in Indy, that place was wrecked after Pantera were done. During their whole set the sky was like hellfire raining down, a melee of cups, clothes, food containers, and all the grass was ripped out and tossed from the lawn. Just total insanity and the music was so fucking intense; seemed like they could have played their full catalogue and kept going and going there was so much energy. The only downer was during the Reinventing Tour (this happened the three times I saw them) Dime would start into Cemetary Gates and then just before the vox were to start Phil would say, we're not playin' that pussy shit. WTF, just b/c he couldn't hit the high notes anymore. Dime was amazing. RIP!

I'm jealous of all the people that got to see PanterA live. I don't want to see a reunion with Zakk though. I was just getting into PanterA a few months before Dime was shot too. I feel fortunate to have at least seen Down a few times.

Everyone brings up vulgar display of power for their best album, but I honestly think The Great Southern Trendkill is the best. I love the diversity it has. It has great lyrics and represents what the band is truly about, staying strong without conforming to any trends. Every time I listen to it, I feel obligated to listen to it from the beginning to the end.

If I could invent time travel, I'd do it just so I could catch the Pantera, Neurosis and Clutch tour in the mid 90s. That's one hell of a lineup.

R.I.P. Dime

Seen Pantera 3 or 4 times at the different stages of thier run. Still one of the best live metal bands Ive ever seen and a shame to those who didnt get the chance. I actually bought tickets for Skid Row just to see them open. It was like the modern version of Metallica supporting Ozzy. They had arrived and it was pretty well known. Skid Row, just like Ozzy, knew there was no competition and admitted as much. Just awesome.

8 years gone and people are still talking. A lot of changes and things have happened since then. It was never the same for me. I always thought that they might have another go at it and what went down 8 years ago was so fucked up. A very tragic end. It sucks just thinking about it in retrospect.

I remember seeing Pantera in Dallas in the mid 90's. I was in the balcony like a pussy watching the band and the people on the floor. The place was going nuts. A sea of people losing their minds. Pantera forced you to participate. There was 3 firepits going at the same time and 100's dancing around them. I thought if this is what Hell is going to be like, please give me a ticket because I am soooooo there!

On their last tour of Australia, in Sydney in 01' at the Hordern Pavillion. Holy Shit! Had a crazy time getting there as public transport was extremely fuct and also the traffic was terrible, but did make it in time to see the backup bands, Segression and C.O.C.

Once Pantera came on, holy fucking shit! I don't think I have ever seen a pit go so crazy! Becoming and I'll cast a shadow were the craziest songs of the night! Just wish I was a lil less drunk and Phil wasn't as wasted as he was, but still, even regardless of that, it's still probably the best gig I've ever been to and i must have been to at least over a 100 big international bands, plus gone to about 20 festivals.

No one could touch Pantera!

I hate it when people say these guys "saved heavy metal in the 90s".. metal never died, metal was always alive and well... There were hundreds of bands flying the flag for real heavy metal and not following that groove crap or trendy nu metal... Solitude Aeturnus, Dismember, Bolt Thrower, Skullview... that's just a few examples

Damn, the only band in that list that could pull off a PanterA cover is Slayer.

I was surprised Staind said they use to cover PanterA..anyone have footage? Pure curiosity, because that seems like a train wreck. I know Staind was heavier on their 1st album, but STILL!

KoRn covering PanterA would be interesting, they're surprisingly talented at covering songs..when it comes to "giving it their own flavor"

and yeah, 5DP..we know you wish you could be PanterA. I bet withnoregret is in 5DP "my band is so much better..er i mean, they're my beginning and end *sob* "

You are 100% correct. I think this horseshit about Pantera 'saving metal' in the 90s got started by idiots who weren't even alive back then, or by morons who thought when they stopped playing White Lion and Slaughter on the radio, metal somehow 'died'. Metal was going strong before during and after Pantera.

True, metal never dies! Its in our blood....I may not like most of these newer bands (except the Sword, Gojira, Bonded by Blood, and Evile- these guys kick major ass!) but Pantera was so critical at that time in the early 90's when Metallica swerved off the beaten path( yes they are my favorite band) and grunge kinda took over. Pantera filled that thrash, sabbathy void that was missing! It was timing and when you have an extremely talented vocalist (he writes good lyrics and screams-but you can still understand what he is saying-very important kiddies out there) and an outrageously great guitar player- thats a great combination! Dime's riffs were truly one of a kind and will never be duplicated! I havent heard anyone write riffs like him-unreal! What a damn shame...we miss ya Dime, and Cliff...but Metal lives on... Metal will never die! Bang the head that doesn't bang!
