LED ZEPPELIN's JIMMY PAGE: 'I Wouldn't Expect That There Would Be Any More Concerts, Really' - Dec. 8, 2012
LED ZEPPELIN guitarist Jimmy Page spoke to Guitar World for the magazine's January 2013 issue about the release of ZEPPELIN's "Celebration Day", which documents the band's 2007 concert at London, England's O2 Arena, and his future plans.

Guitar World: So why haven't there been more shows [after the O2 concert]? Is it because Robert [Plant, vocals] doesn't want to be involved?

Jimmy Page: From a concert like that, you would have thought that there might have been some sort of whisper or hint about another gig over here or over there, for maybe very, very good reasons — you know, charitable causes or whatever. Well, there wasn't. That's it. That's all I can tell you. I wouldn't expect that there would be any more concerts, really.

Guitar World: Which is sad.

Jimmy Page: Well, it is what it is, isn't it? So under those circumstances, when it was getting in three and a half years after the concert, I thought. We've got to pay some attention to this show. I've gotto look at the footage and just go in, in an objective way, with a really positive attitude of knowing that we did a really great show, and that Jason [Bonham, drums] had played marvelously. His father would have been so proud of him. And that was the way to go in and look at the O2.

Guitar World: But weren't there plans to form another band with a different singer and go on tour?

Jimmy Page: No. You see, what we did — doing all of the rehearsals — was not to play any new stuff, not to get sidetracked. After it was done, Jason, myself and John Paul Jones felt it was the right thing to do to go in and start playing new material and see how we were getting on. I thought that, really, we should play on our strengths and start working on quite a lot of music. We had a few things together, but Robert had his Alison Krauss project ["Raising Sand"] to promote. There was talk about bringing in some other singers, but that would have changed the character of what we were doing, and done it rather suddenly. There was a lot of... I won't say pressure but a lot of hinting about "this singer and that singer." And for me, it was more about, "Let's see what we can really do." But I don't think we really got a chance to do that.

Guitar World: So it would have been too early at that point?

Jimmy Page: To do what? Bring in a singer on it? Yes. I think we needed to work on the material first and all the various sorts of textures and moods that we could create. But that wasn't to be either.

Guitar World: Everybody thought you would replace Robert with another singer and go on a LED ZEPPELIN reunion tour. That is obviously a misunderstanding then.

Jimmy Page: Well, look: even If we had eventually settled on a singer, I think it would have been premature to go on our. Of course, we would have played LED ZEPPELIN material, but I would also want to be playing some really, really good new material as well, to knock people's socks off.

Guitar World: Is that ever going to happen?

Jimmy Page: I don't think so. I don't think so. I know that I certainly want to be… Let's put it this way: This time last year I intended to be actually playing by now in a live outfit. [laughs] So that will have to be postponed now into sort of next year, tail end of next year. But I definitely want to be doing that.

Hats off, Mr. Page! Still thirsty to write new material!

You are free to do whatever you want. Just as long as it isn't a project with Corey Taylor or Mike Portnoy.

i would certainly hope not. to do more concerts at this point would smear the greatness of the past. and especially if plant has no desire.

...look at the Stones. They get together every 5-6 years, put out an album of new stuff (or hits package), then tour the world and make zillions. Giving the people what they want. In-between, they do what THEY want (solo albums, whatever).

Don't see why this couldn't have happened all through the 90's and 00's for Zep. Maybe there's more personal issue there than we know about. Or maybe it's as simple as Plant doesn't want to do it w/o Bonham.

Plant knows he would sound like shit trying to pull off classic Zep in a live setting. (He may be able to pull off one show a month or so) certainly not a tour!

Well...

I certainly agree he's not going to sound like when he was in his 20's...the guy's over 60 now. Who would???

I listened to Celebratin Day and it sounds fine...a) the band tunes down to accomodate his lower register and b) there's all kinds of auto-tuning software that can be used in a live setting to help cover up any mistakes.

Not saying it would be perfect...just making a point. To each his own.

I don't know about that -- Robert Plant has been far more active in the last 30 years than Jimmy Page. So has John Paul Jones. So has Jason Bonham. So if anyone is "lazy" you'd have to apply that label to Page, just based on recorded output and live appearances. He's also the one most fixated on the old albums, remastering them again and again, new deluxe editions supervised by him scheduled for next year, etc.

Plant has been the only one actually making music and touring since the Page-Plant tour in the 90s.

You might not like the music he's been doing, but Plant is surely no fucking "lazy diva".

I laugh at people giving Plant a hard time. He has had about the same stance since the day Bonzo died. We are lucky they did the 02 show and it was the perfect way to close out their legacy live with Jason behind the kit for the final show. And calling Plant lazy? Come on, compare Plants output and touring versus Pages the last 25 years.

Robert has been working hard, Page should start doing the same.

I can understand Plant's point of view, keep moving forward, make new music with new people, don't live in the past. I can understant Page's point of view, he's the one who produced all the Led Zeppelin albums, it's his greatest achievement and he is justifiably proud of it and wants it to never die.

It just sucks the big one after watching Celebration Day and seeing how great they still are together, that they can't just do a charity gig here and there, whatever they are personally interested in, play once in a while, give all the money to their favorite cause if they don't need it. I know it is selfish to want them to bend to our wishes, but when you are a great band, everyone wants to see you.

Sammy Hagar would be a more appropriate choice in my opinion. Or maybe Paul Rodgers of Bad Company, he's got a hell of a voice! Myles is good, but not quite up to that level for me. However I think Myles did talk to them at one point about it, am I wrong?

We all know the answer. Plant wants to live in the present and not the past. He wants to do his solo stuff, work with Alison Kraus, etc. And as much as it saddens me - I have never seen Led Zeppelin live and will probably die that way - I do respect it.

That Jimmy Page has absolutely nothing creative to say, musically? After Zeppelin was done ripping off the Delta Blues, they ripped off Spirit and then began to suck. Physical Grafitti the only exception IMO, and how much of that was Page?

Perhaps, just maybe, Plant thinks Page is spent, bankrupt creatively, and a hack guitarist at that compared to the ones he can hire for cheap?

Perhaps he is quietly unimpressed with Jason Bonham, and doesn't want to be pigeon holed into working with a sub-par drummer just because he's the son of the original?

I get the impression that the real talent and creativity is John Paul Jones, but for whatever reason they don't quite get along with him that well.

I agree with angelus1. Laggerlugger is busy listening to Loverboy, not keeping up with Jimmy Page.

I love Jimmy Page,Zep, etc. one of my alltime favorites, so I'm not out to trash him. but #1, what band at age 65 is writing material that is "knocking our socks off". No one. Especially hard rockers who are trying to keep up to the standard they achieved as young men.

#2, look at Page's material, post Zep. Not that inspiring. the Firm is ok. Outrider is just bad. Some ok guitar moments, but the songs are awful. the album with Plant. and many years of dormancy. The well is dry. Otherwise, wouldn't there be material. Page is the exception and is still a musical wizard at 69? don't think so. He's like the Stones, and all the other 60's rockers. They had their day. legends. incredible music. But its 30-40 years gone.

Laggerlugger, what Post Zep Page are you listening to that's so exciting, I'm all ears.

Jimmy newest release was in 2011 called Playing up a storm.

Also if Robert doesn't want to do Zep stuff for sentimental reasons, it's understandable, I mean by the time the band ended, he'd lost a friend and his son, add the battle with addictions on top of that and you get why it's a period of your life you'd prefer not to be remembered of.

I would be very happy if Jimmy Page were to lock himself away in an recording studio for a year - come out with a bunch of songs and release them on the world via an album featuring himself, John Paul Jones, Jason Bonham. No vocals.

You could just have a lyric sheet and a hum-track where the lyrics are supposed to be.

Every musician in the world would release their own take with their vocals on it. Paul McCartney, Ozzy, Coverdale...lol
