It's Official: RUSH To Be Inducted Into ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME - Dec. 11, 2012
Canadian rock legends RUSH were announced as one of next year's inductees into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame on Tuesday, along with PUBLIC ENEMY, HEART, Randy Newman, Donna Summer and Albert King. Summer, who passed away this May, and King, who died in 1992, will earn the honor posthumously. Lou Adler and Quincy Jones will both receive the Ahmet Ertegun Award for non-performers.

"It's a terrific honor and we'll show up smiling," RUSH's singer and bassist, Geddy Lee, tells RollingStone.com. "It made my mom happy, so that's worth it." Lee is especially happy for RUSH's army of hardcore fans. "It was a cause they championed," he says. "I'm very relieved for them and we share this honor with them, for sure."

RUSH has been eligible for the honor since 1999, 25 years after the release of the band's self-titled debut album.

"I never really cared if it happened or not, to be honest with you," RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson told the Canadian Press. "It doesn't change anybody's life at the end of the day. Are we going to become more popular? Are we going to sell more records? Are more people going to come to the shows? I don't know. We're quite happy where we are and with what we've accomplished.

"So we continue to do the kind of work we want to do and we will continue regardless of our induction or not," he added. "I think at the end of the day, really, what this is about is making our fans feel like their support has been worthy."

"If there's one band in the history of rock music that's deserved the acknowledgment of getting into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, it's RUSH," said Sam Dunn, co-director of the 2010 Grammy-nominated documentary "Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage". "Here's a band that has been making creative and unique music for over 40 years now, has a massive fanbase around the world ... (and) they continue to be one of the best live bands on the planet.

"I think there's a bunch of good reasons why they deserve this achievement."

"The progressive movement is not something the founders of the Hall Of Fame are too keen on," Lifeson told the Canadian Press. "But it seems to be changing. If you look at this year's nominees, it's really quite an eclectic group.... I kind of like the idea that it is becoming broader and more areas of popular music are being included. And so therefore at some point in the near future, progressive music will start being included."

According to Lifeson, the Rock Hall induction would pale in comparison to the band's having received one of the prestigious Governor General's Performing Arts Awards for Lifetime Artistic Achievement in March, the highest honor bestowed on artists by the Canadian government.

"The acknowledgement we got from the Canadian government, and by extension Canadians, is very dear to us," Lifeson said. "The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame is more a popularity contest."

The April 18, 2013 event is set for Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, marking the first time the ceremony will be held in the city since 1993. HBO will tape the show for broadcast at a later date.

Nice and all, well deserved but I can't stop asking myself: "What does this induction add to the greatness of Rush?".

Great question. From my point of view, the hall of fame is irrelevant with respect to the measure of the greatness of any artist. As an individual, I don't want to sacrafice how a band's music is valued to the judgement to an organization, especially to the R&R Hall of Fame. If Rush didn't get in, I am sure the guys would continue to do what the want to do, and fans would continue to do their thing. FYI - I took my family to see Rush this month and they still kick ass. My first concert was Rush "Permanent Waves".

I also like classic Deep Purple. Jon Lord and his hammond organ desrve to be in. Lord showed everyone what a monster the hammond could be in hard rock. Deep Purple deserves to be in. Their MK2 and some MK3 music was great, and it stands on it's own merits.

At this point in the game it doesn't even matter if Rush, Deep Purple or other deserving bands get in. The Hall of Fame in my mind is too corrupt and broken of an organization and really holds no credibility to most fans.

There's too many great bands that haven't been inducted or had to wait criminally long and other bands who are in who have no right being in it.

Rock and roll needs and deserves a REAL Rock and Roll HoF that ONLY rewards rock and roll. No Madonna, no Rap, no country. Just Rock and Roll. Then maybe I'll respect it.

FINALLY. Rush are rock and roll fame, why not put them in the hall earlier!!

Also, let's congratulate the pioneers of hip hop Public Enemy. PE practically created hip hop, and deserve to be acknowledged for this. Play some She Watch Channel Zero if you need proof.

Public Enemy's sound was revolutionary at the time. The production of Hank and Keith Shocklee and Carl Ryder (aka Chuck D.) *still* sounds fresh and powerful today. 'It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back' is a masterpiece of an album: hip-hop or otherwise. They're bad ass, and they rock enough on the all-around to deserve the nod.

...most consider it a "passing trend" from back in the early 90's when metal-rap hybrids were cool. Or the fact that rap has really gone downhill since the mid-90's (it's all about branding nowadays). Or the train wreck that is Flavor Flav.

But none of this takes away from the fact that PE was a ground-breaking force of nature in its day with awesome lyrics that really challenged the status quo.

And of course, the mighty Rush are one of the greatest bands of all time, few dispute that.

F*ck the RnRHOShame - everyone should just stay home and put Jann Wenner out of business.

Happy for Rush. Deep Purple was 2nd in the "Fan Ballot", not the official secret voting they do. Also, the induction doesn't add anything to the greatness of Rush, it adds a helluva lot of greatness to the Rock and Roll HoF.

blows my mind. Yes, the R&R HOF is silly. Its subjective, all that, we know...but no Deep Purple. and it took Rush far too long. Deep Purple is an ALLTIME classic band. To me, they are in just after the Mega bands, Beatles, Stones, Who, Zep, Hendrix, Elvis, etc...then the next tier would be DP, no?

Heart before DP. Not knocking Heart. Have some all time classic songs, but don't have the alltime albums. talented for sure. Get the greatest hits and you're fine. Deep Purple is one of the foundations of rock....Public Enemy?

I think the R&R HOF, if they had it their way, would have kept Rush out. THey don't go for hard rock, its not "in vogue", or hip...we could go on and on. But if you are going to do a R&R HOF, and make it semi credible, you have to have the band w/one of the alltime riffs, songs, albums, guitarist, front man...drummer, catalogue...DP classic lineup never put out a bad album.

yeah, the subject topic is silly too, but makes for good debate, if nothing else.

It's a shame Deep Purple got overlooked, but I must say, for what any of this is worth, I'm thrilled for Rush and Heart getting into the RNR HOF. Both are originals in their own ways. It's a well-deserved nod from a stuffy, b.s. committee who decides such things (aside from the fan voting), but it's still really cool. Congratulations Rush and Heart! Very cool.

Great for Rush, their in and deservingly so. Like BSlash stated, "if the HOF had it their way, Rush would be like left out lamont. They aren't whats hip and going on today in music. I'm sure if the HOF and all the cock suckers they have on their committee had it their way, Justin Beiber would have made it in before Rush. They sure as hell will make sure that he gets in before Kiss, Journey and Def Leppard thats for sure. Oh, the shame & humanity of it all. Fuck the hall of shame, it's way beyond any credibility anymore.

Over Depp Purple?

Deep Purple- creators of the most recognized guitar riff in the history of rock and roll, and great tunes to boot.

Donna Summer- sympathy vote, plain and simple.

Randy Newman - Short People and some movie soundtracks. Not rock.

Public Enemy- Awesome, but the key word is rock, not rap.

The reason the RRHOF is a joke has as much to do with who is in there, as with who is not.

So legitimate rock musicians Rush and Heart make it in, but so do Donna Summers and Public Enemy. I honestly believe that the idiots who run the RRHOF think anything that isn't classical or country must be rock.

Rush and Heart. Where is Deep Purple? Even when they get it right, they somehow fuck up. Deep Purple ahead of Heart and Rush just because of age and because of the most iconic song ever: Smoke on the Water. Richie Blackmore? Really? Love Rush and Heart but if anyone deserves to be in this Hall, it's Deep Purple. I won't even argue the others because they have their loyality to them. Once again, it sucks. At least, they knew where the common folk were coming from enough to give Rush and Heart props.

It takes years of fan-led campaigns and petitions to get Rush inducted, yet Randy Newman bounces right in there? Instead of Deep Purple???? Really?? Randy FREAKIN Newman????
When the category of Greatest Rock and Roll Artists of All Time comes up, does anyone think Randy Newman? I mean ANYONE????
I can see why many in the general populous have so much contempt for this organization. The criteria is suspect, their methods are questionable, the choices astounding and their logic dizzying.

That being said, I am happy for Rush but mainly for the members of their audience that have championed this for so long.
And now that Randy Newman has been inducted, Deep Purple shouldn't have such stiff competition for next year, and might just get in. Unless of course, Oran “Juice” Jones or Timbuk 3 are nominated.

About f'n time they get in. It only took what? 15 years for those clueless a**holes at the hall of shame to finally wake up, They made Alice Cooper wait that long as well.

But as always, the Hall is still tainted & full of BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again they ignore and keep doing so with Kiss , DP , Motorhead , Ozzy solo , Dio solo , Priest , Maiden , Rainbow , UFO etc.

So F them all who run and operate the thing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You still suck and will continue to do so and it will never end!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"If there's one band in the history of rock music that's deserved the acknowledgment of getting into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, it's (insert name of whatever band they're inducting at that moment in time),"

Seriously - has and band or musician benefited from this?

Waste of time bullshit.

The following was shit out by Skulleater Q. Poopdeck
"Is the RRHOF endorcing a conservative agenda by inducting these baffoons known as Rush?"

First of all, as a proud conservative/libertarian a big FUCK YOU to you. (thanks for the applause) You're spelling exhibits you're extreme ignorance. (It's endorsing and buffoons - you buffoon)
Secondly, have you ever even read RR? It's as progressively liberal as the NYT's if not more.
Thirdly, the members of Rush are self described Canadian liberals which would make them Libertarians here in the states.

Rush is only in because of the new public voting system.
Otherwise, they would've been forgotten again, unfortunately.

Their latest album is one of their best ever. What other bands can say that late in their careers? Iron Maiden and Rush are the only ones I can think of that can do it. Cheers!!! I'll see you in Amsterdam.
