JASON NEWSTED To Release 'Metal' EP Next Month - Dec. 14, 2012
NEWSTED, the new band led by former METALLICA, VOIVOD and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM bassist Jason Newsted, will release a four-song EP, entitled "Metal", exclusively via iTunes on January 8, 2013. Pre-orders begin on Tuesday, December 18.

"Metal" will contain the following tracks:

* Soldierhead
* Godsnake
* King Of The Underdogs
* Skyscraper

By purchasing all four songs, you will receive a copy of Jason's handwritten lyrics.

NEWSTED will film its first-ever video on Saturday, December 15.

In a recent interview with Eddie Trunk's "Friday Night Rocks" radio show on New York's Q104.3 FM, Newsted stated about his plans to release original music via his newly launched official web site, "Whatever it ends up being — if it's five songs, 20 songs, 50 songs… I don't even know what the heck I'm gonna do. I have so much music from over the years. I have a bunch of new stuff, I have so many mixes of projects with people — new players, young players, old-school players like myself — so I'm just trying to figure out exactly what I wanna unleash on everybody first. That's kind of what it's coming down to — the timing of things and how I wanna hit people with it, and which stuff [to release first]."

Asked how he plans to release his music, Jason said, "I see a couple of the old avenues still being there that will always be there in the purest form — making the vinyl and everybody having the special-edition vinyl to be able to read the lyrics, stuff like you and I loved the most, that's the closest to us that's the most endearing and the most personal. So that's always gonna be there and I never wanna dismiss that, so that will be percentage of it for the fans that really dig the real American kick-ass guitar music … And then the newest avenues that I'm just really now learning about as I expose myself to all this stuff… I saw a piece of one of ['That Metal Show' espisodes on VH1 Classic] and somebody talked about DOWN and some other bands doing four tracks at a time in EP form every few months, letting people have some fresh metal. I think that's a pretty good concept, a pretty good formula — I'm hip to that, [and] I'd like to warm up to that. Since it is new territory for me, I'm really open to that idea; I think it's a good way to spread stuff."

How bout someone introduce Jason to a band called Manilla Road? (Who's second album was rightfully called METAL...) Anyway, he sounds really confused here, I'm looking forward to wacky "Newsted" updates to offset the Geoff Tate ones...

@Hipster Trash:
I'll elaborate: I have a feeling Death Magnetic had more "trying too hard" moments and sounded very forced, lacking passion, and surprisngly it were the more natural fragments that were the most listenable. Newsted's approach to music he writes seems to be "I've played something on the instrument, it's cool because I've played it, let's release it" - while the stuff is totally generic and forgetable. Along the years I've heard IR8, Sexoturica, Papa Wheelie, Echobrain... none of that had any distinct style really. Judging also on his psyched up but short-termed focus on all his projects and bands after Metallica, he doesn't give himself time to think if somethig really works. Haven't even seen any of his kindergarten paintings posted on this website recently.

There's a hint of "you don't like Jason because you're camp Metallica" in your post - well I'm a fan of the guy, check the footage of his and Ozzy's band jam when it was annoced he'll be touring with Oz, or check AJFA with loudened bass track, or simply any old Whiplash live clip with him singing and driving this track to a crazy ass tempo. Metallica's live performances are simply embarassing nowadays, really - I didn't even have Metallica in my head when thinking about his new music.

death magnetic woudlve benefited greatly had the production not been so digital and overproduced. When you listen to the songs played live especially on the quebec magnetic dvd, the songs sound so much more raw and more like the 80s sound.

you need to take a tall glass of call your tits down. It's just music, for crying out loud. If it's good, support it, if it's bad, don't. Simple. Leave your ocd for cleaning your bathroom, or something.

I partially agree. While Jason said that most of the music is stuff he's had over the years, it definitely seems like he's moving a little too fast at getting his name back out there. And it doesn't seem like he has things that figured out as shown by the Eddie Trunk interview.

But either way I'll give his new stuff a fair chance. I just think it's cool that he's doing something that's somewhat serious after being inactive for a while. And personally, I dig that "King of the Underdogs" clip in that update.

but that 6 years might as well be 60 years the way george has windmilled over the years. Jason stopped windmillin in about '94 when metalllica sold out, George has been windmilling since Monstrosity imperial doom in '92, all the way up to the present.

How many filthy hands do you think touch it (and get a cut) before it gets to a record store?

Anyway, Newsted has yet to impress with any post Metallica offering and he should have. I'd guess this is his last chance, the "alcohol soft middle age" phase is fast approaching.
