METALLICA's 'Enter Sandman' Gets Bossa Nova Treatment - Dec. 22, 2012
Video footage of Marcel Yammouni's wedding band in Melbourne, Australia performing a very chill bossa nova version of METALLICA's smash heavy metal hit "Enter Sandman" can be seen below. During the "dinner set," Marcel and his band broke out the cover and Yammouni set up his phone to record the slow-grooving action. The resulting clip has since gone viral and has already been viewed nearly 400,000 times on YouTube after it was first posted on November 17.

"Enter Sandman" was featured as the opening track and lead single from METALLICA's eponymous 1991 album. The song was produced by Bob Rock, and the music was written by Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich, and James Hetfield. Vocalist and guitarist Hetfield wrote the lyrics, which deal with the simplest concept of a child's nightmares.

The "Enter Sandman" single was certified gold in the United States for sales in excess of 500,000 copies. Acclaimed by critics, the song is featured on all of METALLICA's live albums and DVDs released after 1991 and has been played live at award ceremonies and benefit concerts. It is considered to be METALLICA's signature song to the general public.

METALLICA's self-titled "black album" has sold more than 16 million copies in the U.S., according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

What does selling albums have to do with claiming a song is a "heavy metal smash hit"? The song enter sandman by metallica is NOT a "heavy metal smash hit". Anything prior to "the black album" was metal. However, the release of "the black album" is their turn to making money and ditching the whole metal thing. If you don't like my opinion, I could give a shit less. They could sell 3 billion albums and I'm not capable of writing one. And?????????????????????

Why do people say dumb shit like this to defend against a negative opinion of a song?

How many restaurants have you opened? If none, then STFU and enjoy your burnt grilled cheese because you're clearly not qualified to have an opinion.

excluding fb1980. WGD you're comparing apples to oranges so stfu. tvc the fact that this album is the highest sellin hard rock/metal album ever (Im not too sure about that but go with me on this) means its a smash hit also this song is played in every arena for various sprting events, probably could be recognized by anyone in the u.s. and mulltple other cuntries, it received massive air play and blah blah blah yeah it's a big fuckin hit. not everyone has heard your favorite metal band, you know the one with horrible vocals and the ridiculous name with the font that no one can read, but play this song and most people will be like yeah Ive heard that. that makes it a smash fuckin hit, cw (c-ckwad). is this there best song? hell no! it sucks compared to anything off ride the lightning but it is their hit, smash hit. now go back to sleep.

Who gives a fuck about who would recognize the song or whatever else lame ass whining you got going on. Simple fact, the song is NOT heavy metal. Hard rock at absolute best, but for metallica I would call it butt rock.

Gotta love the "mediocre" label the black album gets. I guess the only good thing Metallica can do is play Kill 'Em All style thrash and if its anything different its shit. nice

Heavy metal smash hit? Critically acclaimed?

Priceless!

The song and album signaled the end of a once great metal band and they have never recovered. In fact got worse, much much worse.

Enter Sandman is a very catchy yet ultimatly boring song. But this cover version is interesting and kinda cool.

The Black Album was a good record no doubt about it, but I still find it hard to hear someone say they like metal because they can name this song. To me it devalues the whole genre.

Bitching aside I do owe a debt to Metallica, without them I would never have discovered other great thrash bands like Heathen, Testament, Overkill, Slayer, Megadeth, Atrophy, Whiplash ect.

1. Enter Sandman IS a heavy metal hit. Doesnt matter whether any of you fucks like it or not, the song is heavy, it may not be thrash, it may not be death but it does fit into the metal genre. Hard rock it fucking aint, Guns N Roses and Aerosmith have NEVER made a song as heavy as that and THEY are hard rock

2. Metallica started making money after Master Of Puppets actually and they only got bigger from there. So by that logic, Justice album is their sellout album. Or have we forgotten about Ride The Lightning on a major label and Fade To Black? Commercial and album sales along with varied song writing is not the ingredient for selling out. Wanna know who sold out? Megadeth, by going back and catering to their fucking fans because god forbid a band might actually piss a few people off because they cant grasp anything beyond metal. Now THAT is fucking selling out. Or the numerous other bands who are too shit scared to try anything different, remember, it's all about the fans right? Great way for an artist to keep their integrety isnt it? By pleasing other people, you are a fucking sellout, end of fucking story. So please enlighten me when you say they sold out when they created stuff like Load or Lulu which the majority dont like? Just as I thought...

3. Thats right, your opinion doesnt matter, just like mine or anyone elses. And thats how it should be, fuck the fans, what the fuck would they know about making music? If they did, they would be the ones on stage, not in the pit. So your opinion doesnt matter to a band and it never should. AGAIN, its the fucking definition of selling the fuck out.

like mindless fucking sheep whenever anyone says it like it is.

Metallica has sucked since the end of the 1980s. Half a fucking century has passed since these washed up millionaires released anything of value. They were an amazing band in the 1980s, and you'll find very few Metalheads who don't recognize that, but for fuck sake its been 25 fucking years and there are at least 300 bands who have come along since that have put out amazing albums that shit on anything Metallica has done post-Justice. But most people are just clueless fucking douche bags who will heep praise on shit-platters like Death Magnetic simply because it has their logo on it. Pathetic.

So if you thumbs down my comment, it is basically an admission that you're a fucking tool.

Okay starting off with the most mindlessly sheepish statement of any generic sheep metalhead

"Half a fucking century has passed since these washed up millionaires released anything of value"

Hmm lets see. Half a century..thats 50 years. They werent a band 50 years ago. Okay I guess this guy is exxagerating and saying that he thinks they always sucked..I can live with that crappy opinion.

"They were an amazing band in the 1980s,"

Wait...I guess I was wrong. This guy sucks at math.

"but for fuck sake its been 25 fucking years"

Yeah 25 years is 1/4th of a century you fucktard! On top of that 25 years ago Justice wasnt even realeased. Not only do you have a typical generic sheep anti-mainstream hipster dimwitt metalhead opinion. You dont understand basic math.

I've disliked this song ever since I first heard it on the day it was released.

Having been brought up on thrash metal Metallica up until and including Justice, I remember frantically going through one song after the other on the Black album, desperately thinking: "COME ON, you motherfuckers - play something FAST! What is this shit!?"

Sadly, the only - even REMOTELY - thrash-related material on that entire album is the riff right after Hetfield yells "Go!" after that guitar solo on the very last song The Struggle Within.

Metallica have been disappointing ever since, save for a few half-decent riffs scattered here and there on their later releases but those have been few and far between - incl. Death Magnetic, which is a somewhat tiny step in the right direction again, at least. The rest is now mostly mid-tempo drivel, with lazy-ass riffing and POOR drumming on top of it.

So in conclusion or until proven otherwise (which is highly doubtful at this point in time(:

RIP Metallica
1983-1989

A lot of bullshit has been thrown around on this thread.

First of all, the black album is NOT the best selling Hard rock/metal album, it's AC/DCs Back in black (which is actually 2nd best selling album of all time behind Jackson's Thriller).

Secondly, saying Sandman isn't metal just to piss off the "'tallica fangirls" is plainly retarded.

Everyone needs to get their heads around the fact that Metallica quit playing Thrash nearly 25 years ago, and the richer and more out of touch they become, the less it's gonna happen, however much the haters bash them or the fanboys blow them...

Load/Reload and the black album were different but the musicianship & song writing skills were still there.

The problem with these guys is that they've been uninspired for the last 10 years: StAnger was nothing but a series of riffs glued together in a soulless way. The same could be said for "Fake Magnetic", the only difference being that Rick Rubin copied & pasted these riffs to create the illusion of the Lightning through Justice period (and many people fell for this "step in the right direction bullshit).

Oh gawd, another Metallica cover from non-metal artists, how fucking original.

Metallica have obviously done a great job at eclipsing everyone else in the metal world, because all non-metal artists seem to know about metal is Metallica. And I fucking hate that. So short sighted, so obvious!

"It is considered to be METALLICA's signature song to the general public".

I suppose that may be true given the distinction afforded the two very separate eras of the band. Sandman is most likely a signature song to the 'tallica era as Whiplash is to the Metallica era.

I think it's ironic to labelled narrow minded for not liking this era of Metallica's career. I don't care whether thrash or pop or indie rock or country and Western. Enter Sandman is watered down from what made them great in a ploy to make a lot of money. If Metallica would admit this instead of saying they never changed and the mainstream came out to them then I wouldn't care so much
