LAMB OF GOD Bassist: RANDY BLYTHE's Legal Woes 'Had Such A Profound Effect On Us As People' - Dec. 24, 2012
Rock Revolt Magazine recently conducted an interview with bassist John Campbell of Richmond, Virginia metallers LAMB OF GOD. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On LAMB OF GOD singer Randy Blythe's arrest and incarceration in Prague for over five weeks which resulted in the cancelation of the band's tour this past summer:

John: "The experience had such a profound effect on us as people, as his friends, as a band as a whole. We were seriously just so worried about him that all we really did was sit around in shock with our friends and families most of the time, waiting for word from his attorneys. It was excruciating, emotionally, and to say that it was a difficult and trying time is an understatement."

On the support shown for Randy by many fellow musicians in raising funds for his legal representation:

John: "We've had so many staunch supporters. It was great the way everyone donated some amazing items for an eBay auction we held to help with the legal fees. I mean, so many of our long time friends like Chris Kael and all the guys from FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, Robb Flynn and Phil Demmel (MACHINE HEAD), Dave Ellefson (MEGADETH) and Slash all came through. So many friends have been supportive within the industry and beyond that if I named them all here it would take up your whole magazine and then some!"

On the fan support over the course of the last few months:

John: "There have been so many people that have helped us in so many different ways. Our fans have been amazing! They've formed petitions, started letter writing campaigns, all kinds of things to show Randy and all of us that they are there. We all feel very lucky to have people that take time out of their day to write something cool on Facebook or on the 'Congregation' members section on our web site. Stuff like that goes a long way on a bad day, ya know?"

On how, ever since a fan gunned down PANTERA guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott during a performance, it simply is not OK for fans to jump on stage anymore:

John: "It can get scary sometimes. You just don't know anymore. We're just trying to work. Granted, we are a hardcore metal band, so people are going to mosh and jump around and stuff, but there has to be a limit. We don't want to get hurt and we don't want anyone else to get hurt either."

I'm glad that so many musicians are donating money and equipment for the Randy fund. Meanwhile the kid he killed is still dead. I wonder how many people are donating to help support the dead kid's family.

Nobody forced that kid to jump on stage, dive off and hit his head. Stupidity can kill, and the kid learned it the hard way. Also, I don't think the kid was much of a moneymaker for his family, so I don't know why they'd need monetary support.

Very good question, an even better question is who was that kid? and how rich are his parents? because they had an American rock star imprisoned without a trial or even charges for his accidental death. Randy was lucky to get out of there last time, I hope he has an awesome lawyer!

So you bring up morbid angel in a comment about fake metal. Listen to their last album? Oh and I know that you said "old" morbid angel, but the fact that you would bring them up when comparing them to the last release LOG put out. Seriously dude????????

1. For all the people who apparently are not following along: The kid didn't hurt himself by jumping off of the stage. Czech Republican Music journalists reporting on the concert stated in their articles that Blythe threw him down, punched him repeatedly, and then threw him back into the crowd. This is the reason why he is on trial.

2. Blythe was arrested because he was a proven flight risk. CR authorities attempted to extradite him from American, however the U.S. refused to play ball or notify him of the charges, so Blythe inadvertently became a wanted man. They knew that if he left the country again, then he wouldn't be back until next tour.

3. This is more of an observation: Everyone keeps citing Dimebag Darrell as the reason behind performers being afriad of stage intruders. To me this just seems like a scapegoat. Dimebag was shot. Plain and simple. Choosing to shoot him on the stage was a matter of convience for Gale, but he could've shot him off the stage, while he was getting on the bus, at a meet and greet, etc. If people, specifically bands, are so worried about ending up like Darrell it seems to me that they need to add metal dectecting wands onto their riders.

I have seen the video about the incident and never saw Blythe throw the kid down and punch him. Could you provide a link if possible? Thanks. Until I see the video of Randy actually beating on him, I think he's being used as a scapegoat.

The vid you are referring to was from a seperate incident. The Daniel Norsek incident happened sometime during the end of the concert. I have done a search for video the incident but so far only found a few pixelated images.

Anyhow, all of this info can be found here on Blabbermouth and a pant load of other music sites.

Sorry I took so long to respond, I don't come on here regularly.

Not a fan of this band, but I appreciate the heart they put into their work...it's a shitty situation to be in for anyone, the fact that a young kid is dead and a innocent human is possibly being railroaded into a prison cell sucks high colon for friends and family on both sides of the fence...By the way I think John Campbell looks like Michael Gross, the guy who play the dad in the 80's TV show Family Ties
