HELLOWEEN Guitarist Says He And MICHAEL KISKE Have To Eventually 'Sort Things Out' Between Them - Dec. 27, 2012
Patrick Prince of Powerline recently conducted an interview with guitarist Michael Weikath of German power metallers HELLOWEEN. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Powerline: Now, you've said that the new album is "a continuation of the '7 Sinners' directive," but more positive. Maybe you can explain that a little more.

Weikath: It's just the way of working and the lineup that we have now, since more or less ten years. And you just know that you've got a good outfit and what are the strengths and what are the weaknesses of everyone. And you come up with new tracks, you upload them onto an Internet server and you download them, listen to them and then pick the tracks that you want to take on the album. It is a feasible way of doing things and that's what we've been doing ever since "Gambling With The Devil" (2007), "7 Sinners" (2010) and now this one. And you get good results, you know. Everyone has tracks at home and gets prepared for the recordings, for the actual ones at the studio, in person, with the producer, Charlie Bauerfeind. And when it's done you just travel back home. We're spread over Germany — like, one guy is in Berlin, the other guy is in Hamburg and others in the south of Germany or the middle of Germany — and then there's a guy like me who lives in Tenerife (Spain). And, so, we always orchestrate that stuff there and we've had great results in the past. In that way it is a continuation of the workflow that we've adopted.

Powerline: Well, most of the members of the band contributed to the songwriting on the last album. Is it pretty much the same for the new album?

Weikath: Yeah, it's written by the same guys but it's like a different variety. Producer Charlie Bauerfeind said he wants to optimize and put in the old trademarks again like huge choruses, big orchestration and shiny sounds and all this. Paired with the other modern elements that HELLOWEEN also stands for, meanwhile, and that has been combined so we have a very accessible, open, good sounding record, I'd say. He tried to let everything sound a bit more loose.

Powerline: Do you still keep in touch with [former HELLOWEEN members] Kai Hansen and Michael Kiske?

Weikath: If you read the interviews with Kiske saying something … he still says he has a problem with me, so that has to be sorted. We have to eventually have a talk or whatever, sort things out. If you ever want to do some "reunion" activities in the form of public appearances with ex-members or recordings with particular tracks. If you want to do something, you at first have to sort things out. He seems to have a problem and I've heard that he is maybe willing to have a talk about this because this eats at you, you know. If you have trouble in public … it's not exactly easy for anyone. You don't just carry that with you. You want to have a talk. And that's what is going to take place one of the other times.

Powerline: Life is too short to carry on quarrels about the past.

Weikath: Right. You know, you're so busy, like everyone's doing one's projects and you always think like we can have a phone call or we can write an email and then you don't do it and you proceed with the other things. And then you go, "Oh, I wanted to talk to Weikath but I'm not in the mood right now or I've got this to do…" And that can happen. And the same goes for me.

Powerline: Throughout the band's history, HELLOWEEN never changed to appease a record company. You stayed creatively true and you must be proud of that, no?

Weikath: Yeah, even though there was the move during "The Dark Ride" (2000), it was tried to equalize the HELLOWEEN sound with the grunge scene at that time, to appear more cynical, more dark, more sinister or whatever, to maybe cater to what was going on then at the time. So that was the point but it wasn't actually pushed on us by a record company. It went on by our own accord. And i really didn't cherish that idea, I must say. But on the other hand, if you've got that record, and there are many people who love it and … what the heck, you know.

No disrespect to Andi but a Helloween reunion with Kai and Kiske would be bad ass. They're both playing together again, doing Helloween material. Much Like Bruce and Adrian just before returning to Maiden

I must have missed the grunge scene of 2000. Think he meant nu metal.

If Weikath and Kiske could ever bury the hatchet, that would make a Helloween/Unisonic tour more interesting than Helloween/Gamma Ray.

it would be cool to see a Kiske reunion tour but I'm not sure I'd like to see him rejoin permanently. The last 3-4 Helloween albums have been brilliant, no need to change things.

let´s just cut the crap right there.
Helloween has never put a good album out since The Time of the Oath
I saw them live here at Portugal with Iron Maiden in 1998 and then at that time, yes, they were a big metal band.Andi Deris was fatter but he had power on his voice.Nowdays they are quite a joke.I go see them live when I can, but,Andi deris is a shadow of he used to be.Last time I watch them playing live here at Porto Coliseu,Andi seemed to be teaching us the lyrics of the songs. He seemed to be my school teacher.he seemed to be out of sync just on purpose like we were little kids. They just are getting out of inspiration and out of ideas.Still, even Kiske and Hansen ain´t nothing outside Helloween.Hansen has The Somewhere out in space album and the song Empress and that´s it.Kiske alone, is just the voice. So I understand that Weikath could be following Steve Harris steps and bring back Kiske but perhaps Helloween reached the bottom. But even if they did, Hansen is the key player.

Seriously people, do you realize he has been out of the band for nearly 20 years?

Kiske's voice had a time and place, but that is buried in the 80's and early 90's.

I guess, however, that the people making this "bring back kiske" noise just want to hear 80's Helloween and pretend like that ship hasn't sailed 20 years ago.

I'm very okay with Deris' vocals, he's got a recognizable voice. New song from the clip is very nice, though the choruses and slower section at the end feel a bit glued in. Saw Unisonic live, wasn't blown away by the singing. Sorry but I'm not excited with reunion talk.

Wouldn't like to be in place of people like Andi Deris or i.e. Derrick Green in Sepultura when after sacrificing years of your life for a band, you can hear the managers and promoters trying to keep the reunion topic alive, and feel older members also start to consider that possibility. Dio had the balls to walk away from Sabbath first when he smelled Ozzy reunion in the air. But it's the bands who should have more balls to stand by their current lineups.

Hansen and Kiske making a guest appearance would be nice, but I'd hate for the current lineup to fall apart due to some reunion cash in. They've gone from strength to strength since Deris joined, especially with the last few albums, and Gamma Ray are doing great too. Keepers was just two albums, Helloween have made 7 or so great albums without Kiske and Hansen, and Gamma Ray haven't put a foot wrong either. Kiske, well, I dunno, he's happy doing his thing. Keep it that way.

The Keepers albums aren't just good albums. They are genre defining albums. And, Kiske still has the pipes to deliver those tunes. Hansen still has the songwriting chops as well. Problem is, Kiske's heart doesn't seem to be into a Helloween reunion. There would have to be big $ involved, and Kiske would have to burry the feud he has against Weikath. I think the best we could hope for is a Unisonic/Helloween tour in 2014/2015 with Hansen and Kiske guesting during Helloween encores. I could also see them possibly doing a re-record of the best of the Keepers tracks (re-records seem to be hinted by W in the interview) if the $ is right. At this point, it will be driven by $ more than anything else. These guys are professionals, and like the rest of us, they have to make a living.

This would be cool!!! I would love to see those guys get together even for just a few shows, and if the 2 of them rejoined and they did another album, a bonus disc with KISKE singing "Sole Survivor" and "Steel Tormentor" (amongst other Deris era songs) would be absolutely KICKASS!!

Keeping Sascha in the band and making it 3 guitars wouldn't be a bad idea either :)
