Would JASON NEWSTED Ever Play With METALLICA Again? - Dec. 27, 2012
Niclas Müller-Hansen of Sweden's Metalshrine recently conducted an interview with former METALLICA, VOIVOD and FLOTSAM AND JETSAM bassist and current NEWSTED frontman Jason Newsted. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metalshrine: I was listening to the four tracks [from NEWSTED's "Metal" EP] on iTunes today and reading comments all over the Internet and a word that kept coming up was "classic" and that there's a classic metal feel to the songs. How would you describe the music yourself?

Jason Newsted: It is old school. My saying is you can only be old school if you're old school, you know. You can buy a bullet belt, you can buy the tight black jeans and all those kinda things, but if you're not old school, you're not old school. It's OK if you wanna be — I've got nothing against you — but you only can be if you are, and I am. That's what it is and that's why I named it ["Metal"], because of the other music that I've played over time. All the diversity of the players, I don't wanna make any confusion and I don't want anybody to not know what's happening. This is NEWSTED and it's me and this is metal. There is no other thing that this is. This is metal! Any language that you speak around the world, you know those two words. If you like hard rock music, you know the word "Newsted" and you know the word "metal," so that's what I did and that's kinda how it is now. I'm the only guy that walks the earth that was in METALLICA and I'm still breathing and now I'm a fan again. I was a fan when I was in it and I'm a fan again, so I'm the only one. [laughs] I can really look at it in a really kinda crazy perspective. I think that in [the NEWSTED song] "Soldierhead", some of the lyrics sounds like [James] Hetfield on "Kill 'Em All". When he was just a young man of 19 years old and that's where his voice box had developed to, it was that voice. Just that little thing like that and my voice box is young in this style of real singing. I can do the brutal stuff and I don't have to prove that to anybody either and I've done that for years and I still can, but that's not what I do in this band. In this band I sing and I've been developing my voice for 20 years, but I never got a chance to really sing with it. Now it's a development and it's a young voice and younger than I am because I've only been using this voice for a short time. That's why it kinda sounds like a younger Hetfield, I think. I think it does sound like some lyrics are reminiscent of old METALLICA.

Metalshrine: I was gonna ask you about the live thing. Any plans at all? Are you playing live this coming summer when everything is out or what's the plan?

Jason Newsted: That is the plan right now. As you can imagine, there's quite a few agents and promoters coming out the wood work the last three days since the music got out. I am trying to make the right judgment and I think I've found the right people and their plans are to follow through with the songs I talked about and do some warm-up shows, do some couple of special ones in the States and then do proper festival stuff for the summer, a European thing. I'll take it to any place I possibly can take it and if they set me up with shows in the middle of wherever and as long as they've got power… I don't have to do this. I mean, that's kinda obvious. I do anything because I love it and I makes me feel alive and I do it because I wanna do it and it's my purpose and it's what I do best, so I just wanna try it one more time. The thing with METALLICA, that we talked about at the beginning of this conversation, the catalyst of that was from that and for myself I have to give it one good shot. I have to give it one solid strong effort where I know I did my best and I tried to cover all the bases and I was honest with the fans again. All that stuff, and whatever it does is whatever it does. I do not have lofty expectations of this, I do not have any of that kinda thing. I've got a cool-ass CD to play in my truck and it crushes. Anything after that is gravy. If people wanna buy it, if people wanna buy a t-shirt? Cool, man! My boys and I made some cool music and that's good enough for me because I don't have to go out and sell a bunch of records to eat. I played bass on the "Black album" and I don't think I have to say much more. I'll be fine. [laughs]

Metalshrine: Let's just say that Rob Trujillo [current METALLICA bassist] breaks his leg and they're about to go on tour and they call you [to fill in]. Would you do it?

Jason Newsted: Aahhh, it kinda depends on the circumstances. God, I haven't been asked that before. [sighs deeply] If they were cool and they were bros. Actually, here's the word, if they were "brofessional" about it and if they came as my brothers and they were professional with the meeting and they called the meeting and they're sitting there and looking me in the eye and the managers aren't around and we're doing this as we used to do every-fucking-thing, with just us, and then the managers did what we told them to do… if it was like that again and the money was crazy, then I would consider it. I would consider it, but it would be only for that thing and it would to be absolutely delegated and it would have to be these 30 shows in these 45 days for this squillion dollars, then I would say, most likely I would come and crush every fucker in my sight. But it has to be that. I love those guys and I always will and I will defend them to the end of time. I don't dig it when people talk shit about them and I don't dig it when they put them down about certain music they didn't like that they did or whatever. Fuck those people! As soon as the people can put out a better album than METALLICA, you let me know and I'll listen to it, but until that time, just back off! I don't come and tell you how shitty you're doing your accountant job or whatever, you know what I mean?! I don't like that part, but I'll always have respect for those guys, because they gave me my chance, OK. They gave me my chance and I'll never ever forget that. Now, we've had our differences over time but that shit is under the bridge a long time ago. The shit that has transpired in the last 10 years of the rumors stuff and, "Oh, Jason got treated so bad. Poor fucking Jason," and everything, it's such shit! It's so wrong and it's not the truth and it really bothers me. I understand that it gets sensationalized and blah, blah, blah. What I try to say man is trainloads, trainloads of joy, accomplishments and wonderful experiences and one little, tiny fucking symbol full of shit. It was joyous and victorious and accomplishing things and setting the fucking standard, you know what I mean? People go, "Oh, he got treated bad and he got hazed those first couple of times." No shit! You think they're just gonna let any fucker come into the biggest band in the world? Hello! And people go, "Oh, he was just a fanboy that got lucky." But could you maybe tell me one of the 52 people that auditioned that wasn't a METALLICA fan? The 52 that tried out for bass that wasn't a METALLICA fan? If you could find one in that bunch, I'd like to meet him. But any of those people that would've gotten the gig would've been a fan, too. Come around to your senses, man! They had a big thing going and they knew they had a big thing going and they just lost their great teacher and friend [late METALLICA bassist Cliff Burton], the guy that taught James how to play guitar harmonies. Do I need to say more? Come on! he taught him to play the guitar shit that he does now that made the magic of all the songs. The guy was just taken away from them and they throw some other guy in some 25 days later and it's, like, "Oh, yeah! Let's just be peachy and everything and here we go!" Come on, man! If I was in their shoes, I would've greased me a lot more than they did. People need to really get some perspective on that.

I love how open Jason is in interviews. He never really pulls any punches, though I can't believe he has never been asked if he would reunite with Metallica again. Rob is a nice fit for the band, and I think Jason solo is better for everyone concerned. This is really the first time he gets to show how he is at song writing without restriction. I don't really count IR8 or the other demo stuff he did as those ideas never had a chance to really develop. Like many others, no one counts Supernova for anything but a mistake. . . :)

Rob's a great bassist but his backing vocals are shit (as are Kirk's) Metallica live was better with Jason by a long shot IMHO.

Come on!!!
Does anyone think Mr.Frog (Rob) is better live than Jason? They must be deaf and dumb!! Look at any youtube video with Jason live and you´ll see what I mean!! He was the "Metal" in Metallica!! His vocals/backing vocals are SO missed nowdays live!! Metallica would be a much better band!! I´ve lost interest in them nowdays, just don´t care anymore....boring.....

I'll never bother seeing them live now because their guitar tone is horrendous (Big 4 dvd 1 was worth it at least), and James' vocals. Jason wouldn't change that, so it's a moo point to me who's on bass/backing vocals.

I like Jason but Trujillo > Newstead, big time.

Jason was asked about Metallica selling out, he answered something like "We sell out every show, every night"

Jason was part of the ~20 year trainwreck that was the Black Album to just before Saint Anger. Trujillo was brought in because of his street cred and the fact he is one of the best bass players alive.

I'm going out on a limb here but I'm willing to bet no other replacement musician got the gears nearly as bad as you did when a band member died. I'm thinking Brent Purgason, Brian Johnson, Jake E Lee, Eric Singer, to name a few. It's great that you can take the high road (I'm talking to you Geoff "The Vest" Tate) but come on.

Everyone that always talks about how cool Jason is and how James, Lars, and Kirk are only in it for the money now, are greedy, blah, blah blah.......well, what do you have to say about this?

"I would consider it, but it would be only for that thing and it would to be absolutely delegated and it would have to be these 30 shows in these 45 days for this squillion dollars, then I would say, most likely I would come and crush every fucker in my sight."

He would only do it for squillions of dollars? What the hell is that? Kind of contradicting himself from earlier in the article about how he is only do this for the fans, for the people, and how he's got a really cool CD to put into his truck. I'm calling BULLSHIT. Look, I really dig Newsted and have always liked him, but he does come off as cocky in this interview. Just because he was fortunate enough to play on the Black Album doesn't mean you should rub that in our faces Jason. WE PUT YOU WHERE YOU ARE. THE FANS. Don't be so damn cocky. And, to say you would only do a reunion with Metallica for squillions of dollars? That's another slap in our faces. What about for the people? For the fans?

I do like the new music he put out, but let's get serious, its no Kill Em All. Its no Ride the Lightning. Hell, its not even Doomsday for the Deceiver. Its just ok. Lemme tell you what Newsted, if Hetfield and Lars ever call you to ask you to join again, you better jump on the opportunity, because your dumb ass is the one who bolted from the band when things got tough and you didn't like how things were going. Well guess what, I agree with Hetfield. Screw your side projects. You had Metallica and if that wasn't enough, then tough shit. So, you threw a pussy fit and decided to quit Metallica thinking they would either just break up, or beg you back. Then, in Some Kind of Monster, on the extra scenes, you could hear Newsted call in and want back in the band. Well, you were the one who bolted; not them. And, look at what has happened the past 15 years? They have been all over the place playing in front of millions and millions of people. The people you say you were only in music for.

Sorry, but this interview just rubs me the wrong way about Newsted. Lose the attitude BRO.

I'd say you need to relax and stop being so dramatic. A slap in the face? Really? He's just saying how he feels and sees things. And yeah, he should fucking get PAID for that shit. They gave Rob a cool mill to sign. And your quoting of past articles and interviews is just plain embarrassing. I personally think Metallica would be much better today if they still had him.

I can't wait to see Jason live with this band.

This was a great interview, although I'd much rather have been able to hear it than read it.

I have a strong feeling the whole lot about Metallica paying him a squillion dollars to tour was probably meant as more of a joke. I'm sure Jason would want a cut that would be considered "fair", but I hardly think he'd walk away from something like this unless it was something insane. He just got finished saying how he's comfortable.

Sorry, maybe I'm being naive, but I just think that part of the interview read wrong. I've seen enough Jason over the years to feel like he was probably laughing through a lot of that.

Regardless of context. If Rob caught some kind of flu before Orion next summer, I'd wish him a slow but complete recovery.

Rob on a technical level is WORLDS above Jason in bass playing, and his technique and sound is bar none, even farther ahead. The band plays tighter, sounds better and Rob encourages them to play a lot more of the pre-black classics that were seldom played before Jason left.

Say what you will about how sloppy Kirk or Lars is and how much James' voice has gotten a bit rough but the band is still capable of bringing it on the live front. I'm still in awe over how they played in Buffalo back in '09. Was it Metallica with Cliff? Hell No. Was it worth my money and then some? Hell Yes.

Metallica has done well by me, and earned the career they have for themselves. I may be the only one but I think Jason is so full of shit in this interview, I can almost smell it as if he was sitting next to me.

PS. I was also at Buffalo '09 (and '04, '98, and '97). That show was incredible. The home stretch with Phantom Lord and Blitzkrieg was simply out of control!

Jason is starting to act a little like Dave Mustaine in that he can't go through a single interview without mentioning Metallica. He's like a jilted ex trying to get over his past relationship. He says he's having a great time making his own music that sounds like Metallica, and that he's developing as a vocalist trying to sound like a young James Hetfield, but in no way does he want to be in the band again. However, if they called him up to play a few dates in a circumstance where their current bassist was seriously injured (god forbid, wink wink) he'd do it if the price was right. I dunno, sounds to me like Jason Newsted is kicking himself in the ass for leaving the band, and now that his post-Metallica career hasn't worked out so well, that maybe, just maybe, he wants them back.

He can't go a single interview without mentioning Metallica.........could it be because he was....i don't know a MEMBER OF METALLICA???

You can't really compare Newsted to Mustaine in my opinion because Mustaine was booted from them before Kill 'Em All, before Cliff Burton died, before they did anything really besides that No Life 'Till Leather demo. They were still in the formative years when they made that change. Whereas Newsted was with them for nearly 15 years, built a career with them , and left when HE was ready to leave.

That being said, I wish he would go back to them, but I'm digging what he's doing now so I'll take that.

"As soon as the people can put out a better album than METALLICA, you let me know and I'll listen to it, but until that time, just back off!"

There are people putting better albums than metallica everywhere since the mid 90s... there are millions of albums much better than the loads, st. anger etc and hardly any albums worse than lulu... maybe Jason needs to clean his ears a little bit...

that think Jason returning would mean metallica would go back to their 90s sound are funny...Jason was the only one in the band trying to hold them to the metal side when they started experimenting in the 90s. Unfortunately his vote didnt mean shit, which is why he eventually left.

Everybody here is saying that Newstead is way better than Trujillo.
Maybe Trujillo looks like a goofy ape on stage but he's a much better bass player than Newstead whom I've never seen play without a pick.
Just listen to Jason playing 'Orion', sounds like total shit with a pick.
Robert could even pull off 'Anesthesia' at that 30 Year Anniversary show; sometimes you just need a great bass player who plays with his fingers like Cliff and Trujillo....

Some people are taking this interview a little too seriously. Newsted is being arrogant?? The guy is back making new music and answering questions about it. The highlights for those that don't get it are:

A. The guy was there and a true metal head. F & J may not have had the success overall, but it's not like he played bass for Michael Bolton before Metallica. He earned his way.
B. He's doing this because he wants to. If anyone thought he was going to be on the streets after Metallica was just stupid. He quit the biggest band in the world, on HIS terms. He walked away from big checks. Just because he made the "Black Album" comment doesn't mean he's not correct. It's not like he gave the interviewer a copy of his bank statement.
C. He's cool with Metallica. He says the hazing stories were blown out of proportion. He doesn't have to say that. He could use that for his advantage as James and Lars copped to it years ago. As far as playing with them again, he already has for a couple gigs. Anything that would extend beyond that would come down James and Lars being fair as businessmen AND friends. Like any of you wouldn't want the same things if you went back to an old job.

Rob is the better player from a purely technical point of view, but metallica doesnt require the best technician. id trade jobs technicalities for jasons live presence any day of the week.

As for Jason and Metallica i will say that Metallica hadn't played as crushingly tight on stage when Jason joined them on stage at the 30th shows since Jason joined them onstage at their RRHOF induction.
But for him to wave the Black album and squillion dollars card and say that music lovers be it that they play an instrument and make records or not aren't allowed to judge a bad music as bad bad music when they hear it, is just arrogant and yes stupid.

Rob Trujillo Metallica vs Jason Newsted Metallica, for me Jason wins that battle because Rob Trujillo is way too talented and skilled funk bass player to be in a band like Metallica where bassists have always been a stage prop, and these days we have to ad into that Lars´s lack of drumming skills .

Totally agree with you Brent. He has been kicking himself in the ass ever since he quit. I think he truly thought that either the band was going to break up, or they would end up begging him back. When he figured out that they were going to continue, he called the studio during the St. Anger sessions basically begging to be back in the band. He was pissed off to no end when they went out and did that thing for the Oakland Raiders with Bob Rock filling in on bass. That was the first time Newsted had to face that Metallica WAS going to continue without him. Now, believe me, I have always loved Newsted, his persona when he was up on stage and the energy he gave to the fans, but its his OWN damn fault for quitting. He made up all kinds of excuses saying that the other guys had kids, and that music was his kid, blah blah blah. 15 years later, and Metallica having reclaimed their legendary status (and to the haters who say they haven't reclaimed their status, why don't you go ask EVERY SINGLE UPCOMING METAL BAND who the best STILL is and they will tell you Metallica), Newsted is out of the public limelight and it eats him up. That's why he got addicted to pain medicine. Yeah, that's also known about him...it was in the Metallica club Magazine...he did an interview w Steffan Chirazi. I'm sorry Jason, but YOU QUIT and its YOUR OWN FAULT. Now, they have Rob on bass, and even you know you can't hold a candle to him playingwise. Sorry bud. But, keep on doing what you are doing Jason, because I'll support you. Will always support you, but I will forever be pissed at you for quitting Metallica.

Cracks me up how there are so many tone-deaf people in this world, a large percentage of them are Metallica fans. How Metallica ever scammed so many people into liking them is beyond Satan. There are so many other bands out there that are far more superior in every way. People who like this Shit-hole band probably do because of the name. Only thing I will credit this band for is the best name in Metal. But the music has always sucked ass, and those who worship Metallica suck that same ass.
