FATES WARNING Completes Writing Music For New Album - Dec. 28, 2012
Guitarist Jim Matheos of U.S. progressive metal icons FATES WARNING has issued the following update:

"I'm happy to say that all the music for [the new FATES WARNING album] is now written (finally!). Still some lyrics to do, but we're close. Looking forward to sharing this with you in 2013."

FATES WARNING tapped Mike Portnoy (ADRENALINE MOB, TRANSATLANTIC, DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD) to sit behind the kit for their first-ever visit to South America as special guests for QUEENSRŸCHE on April 14, 2012 at HSBC Brasil in São Paulo, Brazil. Multi-camera fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below.

The "Parallels" lineup of FATES WARNING played a number of shows in 2010 in support of the released special edition of the album, which was made available through Metal Blade Records. In addition to remastered audio, there is a second audio disc of live and demo material. The package also includes a DVD with nearly three hours of material, including a complete live show from the 1992 "Parallels" tour and a documentary on the making of "Parallels" which includes live, studio, and current day interview footage with all the band members, Terry Brown (producer) and Brian Slagel (CEO of Metal Blade Records).

FATES WARNING's latest CD, "X", was released in 2004 on Metal Blade Records. The follow-up to 2000's "Disconnected" was recorded at Carriage House studios in Stamford, Connecticut and features cover artwork by renowned record-cover artist Ioannis (DREAM THEATER, SEPULTURA, DEEP PURPLE, BLUE ÖYSTER CULT, YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, KING CRIMSON, BIOHAZARD, VOIVOD, UFO, OVERKILL).

Portnoy seriously lacks some finesse to do justice to these songs.

Portnoy has to make sure he's seen up there. Most of the lights are on him. Should be called Mike Portnoy joined by Fates Warning Tour.

One of the greatest, most criminally underrated progmetal bands of the past 30 years!!
I cannot wait for that new album and I believe Portnoy will do their music justice (if it's him behind the kit).

Isn't Bobby Jarzombek still considered their drummer? I'm not sure if he was just a touring member or an official replacement for Zonder (or is Zonder back). Also, I'm assuming Vera is still playing bass for them, has anyone heard differently? I know DiBiase was back for the Parallels anniverary tour, but I didn't think it was a permanent thing.

Regardless, it great to see that a new Fates album is due out soon. Incredible band!

Yeah that's right! I'm more than stoked to hear that there's a new CD in the works for 2013. Should be another great year for metal.

Fates Warning imo has been and will always be the best prog metal band around. Vastly underrated and with a unique sound, tone and atmosphere.

These guys have had me since day 1.

Isn't Bobby on this album?
That studio isolation cam for Arch/Matheos was fucking killer. I always liked him, but I was skeptical of anyone replacing Zonder (no offense, I just always pictured him as kinda OG Power-Metal vibe, not a progressive feel). He put that to rest for me with this footage.

Jarzombek is still their drummer, I think Portnoy just played with them on the South American gigs, where he was a witness to the Tate spitfest.

Part of this article is misleading, Portnoy isn't playing on FW's new album as far as I know. Why him filling in for one show in Brazil is even relevant to this news is beyond me. Although that would be cool, if it isn't Zonder or Bobby, it might as well be Portnoy.

I for one am looking forward to the new fates release. Its been far too long. I know that this band has never received the recognition or sales they deserved, which is a travesty. The members of the band have had to spend time on other creative projects in order to pay the bills, because the revenue stream generated from the band is not conducive to a full time project, making it far too long between releases.
For whatever reason, I can't seem to get into the Arch or OSI stuff, so I am definitely anticipating 2013 now with both new music from Queensryche and now Fates Warning!

I got into them on Parallels, so not a big Arch fan. Ray Alder is incredible! Hope the new cd is more prog rock with lots of guitar solos unlike X & Disconnected.

Bobby also played with his brother in Spastic Ink, which was about as tech/progressive as you could get. He's a monster drummer & perfect for these guys. Saw them live in Ct. as Arch/Matheos and it was probably THE best show I've ever seen.
Overall this is the best news I've read all week.

As much as I love Fates Warning, I'm not very excited for this since Ray has destroyed his voice by smoking. John Arch came out of retirement and did the Arch/Matheos thing and sounded better than ever. Shows what taking care of your money maker does for you.
