Former WHITE LION Singer MIKE TRAMP: 'There Will Never Be Another Classic Rock Album' - Dec. 29, 2012
Steve Mascord of Hot Metal recently conducted an interview with former WHITE LION singer Mike Tramp. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the artists that are now considered to be "classic rock" and whether any current acts have the potential to achieve that kind of longevity:

Tramp: "What a lot of people forget is that what was then will never, ever come again. There will never be another classic rock album. That ended in 1991. From any band — there will be no great, big albums that will live on. It just doesn't exist. There'll never be classic rock. Classic rock belongs to the Sixties, Seventies and Eighties. So, in reality, you're keeping the dinosaurs alive even though their skin in peeling and they've got arthritis and so on. What is coming in the future will be here today, gone later today."

On WHITE LION's commercial and artistic decline:

Tramp: "I don't know if it was record company pressure but you've got to realize that, like somebody said, you've got your entire life to write your first album and you've got a week to write your next. That's sort of the situation with 'Big Game' [1989] and 'Pride' [1987]. We'd played 'Pride' for three years in the clubs before we'd even recorded it. Then we went on tour for two years on the 'Pride' tour and we just kept going and going and the album kept selling and selling. Then the time came to do the 'Big Game' album and … even though we had some ideas floating around, we basically wrote that album in three or four days. Obviously, that's not the way it should be. We didn't have the guidance from the record company or management to say, 'Hey, let's do this the proper way, let's really set this up.' Instead, it was rushed, we were told we had to get back out there and support the new album. The album was released half a year after we had just finished a two-year tour and we were back on the road. There were a lot of great songs on the 'Big Game' album, but it's an unfinished album."

On WHITE LION's 1991 album, "Mane Attraction", which failed to make an impact on the charts, leading to the band's breakup:

Tramp: "I don't know where you've read the band went bankrupt — it was quite the opposite. We were doing quite well. It had nothing to do with anything other than me looking over at Vito [Bratta, guitar] backstage, when a technical problem happened, and we stood behind the amps and said, 'Vito, when we play Boston next week, it's gonna be the final show.' He just said to me, 'Yes, OK.' And no words were ever spoken for the next 15 years about it. It was just the feeling that the record company had abandoned us in (comparison to) the way it had been in the past. I saw the changes happening in the business. I didn't feel right anymore. James [Lomenzo, bass] and Greg [D'Angelo, drums] had been replaced by two other guys and Vito and I's friendship — if we ever had a friendship besides writing songs together — was not existing. It was two people living in two sides of the house. It's not the reason I got involved in rock 'n' roll."

On his former bandate and songwriting partner, Vito Bratta:

Tramp: "I don't think he's a multi-millionaire by any means. The man has not stood on a stage, written a song, recorded a song or done any interviews since… '91. I really cannot speak about his behaviour. He chooses to do what he does, I choose to live."

On the 2008 album "Return Of The Pride", which was released under the WHITE LION name:

Tramp: "I really love the album but it's just not the sound of WHITE LION. I never really wanted to record under the name of WHITE LION again because so much of the sound and the songwriting came between Vito and I. It's a different thing being up there, playing the old songs note for note. But writing new material in 2012, keeping in mind that the band came from 1983/'84 … the band has not grown, the band ended in '91. I just really think it's important you reflect how you feel. This is not making a new 'Star Wars' movie where there's already a concept and you know the actors and the characters have to be within certain parameters. Writing a new album is not sitting there and baking bread. The idea has to come to you. That works well when it's Mike Tramp writing new songs. But WHITE LION has restrictions. It's know for an image, for a sound and so on. You're limited already and that's tough when you go in to do that. I don't want to be that as a songwriter. Then it becomes a pre-fabricated product, then you get KISS. That's not what I want to do in this case."

"I'm not recording any new material under the name WHITE LION or FREAK OF NATURE. That's only going and playing the classic songs. There's a big difference between going up and playing classic WHITE LION songs and presenting new WHITE LION songs. WHITE LION isn't there. The sound of WHITE LION when it came to songwriting was Vito Bratta and Mike Tramp. That can't be changed and that will never happen again."

I was never much into Mike's music, but he has always seemed like a really cool, down-to-earth guy with integrity. His no bullshit attitude is refreshing in this era of instant fame and nearly-instant obscurity. Plus, he's a huge Phil Lynott fan and that speaks volumes about his taste in music! Hard not to respect this guy and wish him luck.

Metal lost so many fans in the early 90s because they were all writing Air Supply-type songs. They went too main stream with too many power ballads, pretty hair and safe videos.

Ok, but wasn't Fight To Survive the 1st White Lion album not Pride? I really miss Vito. Awesome, smooth player who wrote really cool riffs & had bitchin' solos. It did seem like Big Game & Mane Attraction weren't on the same level as Pride. The remake of Broken Heart was really good! Their version of Radar Love is one of my favorite covers.

The remake of "Broken Heart" is vastly superior to the original. Also "Mane attraction" is a pretty great album. "Lights and thunder", "War song", "Broken heart", "It's over" and the rest are all great, fun songs.

This guy is one of the more intelligent guys from the 80's. Just listen to him in interview after interview...getting asked the same, dumb ass questions, yet still treating the questions as if it's the first time he has heard them. Even non-fans of White Lion know Vito has been out of the game for over 20 years.

Tramp's tour across the US in '05 was decent, but it was sad. I can't recall much more than 100 people at the show I saw and they did all White Lion stuff and his band sounded pretty damn good.

I recently saw Greg D live w/ Stephen Pearcy-he said he keeps in touch the most with Vito out of all of them (which amuses me, since they are always asking Tramp about his relationship with Vito). Greg D did say that Vito lost his love for playing the guitar. Say what you will...hair band, blah, blah, blah....they had some decent songs and pulled in more tail than 98% of us on this site.

Yeah. It is sad. Especially considering the Live CD of that tour is kick ass. I saw him in '05 at the Bang your head festival as a surprise guest. He did a kick ass set in front of 20.000 people. It was awesome.

"What a lot of people forget is that what was then will never, ever come again. There will never be another classic rock album. That ended in 1991."

Is that because a little band from Seattle stole your thunder?

There have been plenty of classic albums, post-1990. Maybe not by mainstream standards but popularity doesn't mean greatness, unless you think 45 Special is art. Quit being lazy and see what you've been missing the past 20+ years, especially during the first half of the 90's. Now, I can't say there have been too many "classic" albums in the last 10 or so years. However, I believe there are still a select few albums worthy of the title. Maybe not enough to count on your fingers but still, they're out there.

Lets hear your select few!

Because I am a huge music lover and when it come to rock and metal, there is not anything in the last 10 years that I would say is a classic.

Good yes, but classic like Back in Black or Appetite, nope

10 years is a long ass time to not get a killer album, when there are some 100,000 albums been released.

I am serious post up some, I want to listen to them.

Don't be scared

Damn. I can't think of any albums that I would call CLASSIC either. But FOREVER is a long time....
Sadly ROCK music in general is in a bit of a dormant stage right now, but things DO run in cycles.
ROCK will rise again.
someone will make a CLASSIC album...

P.S. MY classic albumfrom the last 10 years would be "Wasting Light" by Foo Fighters. All GREAT stuff with no filler tracks.

Mike and Vito were one of the great song writing duo's of the 80's. Mike had a pretty good voice he wrote some great lyrics and Vito hands down was one of the top guitarists. Ask any guitar player that isnt a smarta$$ about Vito. He had it all tone feel legato tapping. Pride was and still is a great album. Not a bad song on it. Big Game was and still is a pretty good album with a great song on it Little Fighter. Main Attraction is every bit as good as pride. It should have been much bigger than it was.It shows alot of growth in the song writing. Again not a bad tune on it. And the 1st cd Fight To Survive is mainly for the diehard fans. Some cool guitar riffs on it but definately wouldnt recommend starting with that cd if your new to White Lion but worth a listen nonetheless. They were the quintessential rockband of the late 80's. The singer had the looks to bring in the hot chicks and the guitarist had the skills to wow every guy in the audience.

liked white lion but tramp is a pompus ass. I met thwm at a record store signing and had them sign a '12 single sleeve that opened up into a big poster and all of them but tramp where cool about it wanting to know where I got it, then tramp saw the for promo only stamp and threw a fit wanting to know how I got that and it was illegal for me to have it. the other guys looked over to see what the problem was and vito told to him shut up and sign it already.

Mike is one of the smartest and truly a great guy. Vito was and is an amazing guitar player. Like White Lion or not, they had a sound and an ability to write songs.

What happened in the record industry is when LA bands exploded and started to dominate the charts, all the labels believed if some is good more is better. I remember working on tours and hitting the bars across this great land of ours and looking for new bands. The problem was if they didn't look like Ratt, MC, etc... the labels didn't want them.

As for albums every band was forced to have a ballad, they were given only a short time to cut the album and hit the road. The labels liked a 1 1/2 to 2 year tour schedule, followed by a 3 to 5 month recording session. Polygram was always pissed at DL for their delays. They actually wanted to sue DL.

I have seen and heard countless bands that were just flat out amazing, one was out of Dayton Ohio. Kind of had a old VH meets early Scorps sound that had 2 of the best guitarist I have ever heard. The lead singer was 6'4 and the label said he was to tall! So they would not sign him, they would if they replaced him, but he was the song writer. There were several in Texas also. The labels didnt like the look or the guys were Vince N. looking.

I think there are still going to be classic albums just not on the grand scale as they used to be in terms of sales. One of the best albums from 2010 was Tod Howarth's Opposite Gods (check out "Cold Beach" great song (and video to)) and the last Accept album comes to mind. I would love to hear what you guys think of other classic albums... I am always looking to add to my collection!

Their are classic rock albums recorded every year. 2012 is a steller year of great releases. The problem is they won't sell and make the label or band rich. Thats what Mr. Tramps version of a "Classic" rock album is.

It's not just that. It's that it's hard to make a groundbreaking or era defining rock or metal album now. Yes there will always be innovators, but genres have fragmented into so many different sub-genres and categories that it's difficult to get listeners on the same page; and being on the same page/s is important to achieve longevity and classic status.

Classic is linked with popularity, as well as importance/influence. and it's difficult to make those claims for albums that barely anyone hears. Masterpieces, however, don't need to reach a wide audience; it's determined on the basis of quality only rather than popularity or influence.

Anyway, it's going to be interesting to see what becomes of rock and metal in the future.

People forgot how dismal the music was becoming that made it the radio in the early 90s. Wait, Fly to the Angels, November Rain, Enter Sandman, Smells like Teen Bullshit...etc. If that's classic rock, I'm glad it died. Dude forgot about AIC, one of the only hard rock bands from that era worth a shit.

there a lot of great younger bands but they will never get as big as the bands used to do, bands like Rival Sons, The Treatment and many more, yea some of them have gotten some radioplay like Shinedown for example but they arent huge and most people dont know their songs. and its the even the same with the crappy rap and r&b artist their songs are known for a very short time and then some other crappy song by them or other similar artist that sound the same and as much as a robot comes along and these songs are forgotten after few months, and the artists too because they are just making some bad singles and there is no great album behind it or anything.

I was reflecting on a similar sentiment not long ago. Gone are the days of hearing something you haven't heard before. I was lucky enough to be there when death metal was new and exploding. It's still possible to hear of a band that is turning things on its head but its getting few and far between, yet nothing with the type of impact albums had in the days of yore.

White Lion IS the reason so much rock and metal failed. Everytime I hear them on the radio i get pissed.

Some bands, like White Lion, who saw ballad sales being huge started making almost entire albums of ballads. Very few bands can do this, ie Journey. The object always was a killer album with a ballad or TWO tops. All this followed unplugged bullshit and a knife to the throat of rock and metal which it never fully recovered from.

Think about the progression of rock from the 50's and 60's. It progressed until ballads came along.

I of course remember them from their heyday but was always into the heaviest stuff and would never even think of listening to something like them. But I stopped and read this interview and got to say I agree with everything he said. This was a great read for once.

It's a very strange and different world we live in today.

I think this cheap, Danish tramp is a bit quick to dismiss the idea of classic rock albums in the future, but I'll grant her that there may not be as many.
The new Soundgarden-album 'King Animal' however, I think will stand as one of the classic rock albums for the future.

I think the labels/management and greed killed this great era of rock & metal by demanding to much of the bands and being too much in control of what kind of music the bands should write and release. People often blame the Grunge scene and Nirvana that was exploding into what it became, those bands didn't do the kill by themselves, almost all labels/managements set the aim for the kill by demanding that their classic rock bands, thrash bands, heavy metal bands changed their music and look into a clone of Nirvana,Soundgarden,AIC. And Metallica deserves to be included in the blame because of what they decided to cater too after ...AJFA they could have done so much for metal in general by releasing and album as heavy, innovative as that album or the 2 albums before that but instead they chose to dumb down there music to the level of mainstream radio and the Grunge band clones which is what the label, management wanted since they got the taste for money from the One video. And after that they were stuck like many other bands into the money flow the label management, to cater to what was hitting the charts at that time like st.anger was drinking the last drop of the nu-metal wave, similar things can be said about many bands but yeah Metallica had a hand in play in the decline of that era of rock, metal music.
And now when all the collage jocks & cheerleaders of that time have grown up and don't have as much time or money for music back then, the labels are demanding bands/artists to make an way too loud mixed/mastered album to cater to the ipod/mp3 times, which leads to listening to a full album is very tiresome in full because of the loudness and btw 12 song long album is just too long and now it seems that the music scene is moving into an ep era which could be a good thing for bands as they will have time too write 4 great songs, and with time it might evolve and come full circle as in a 8-9 songs long great reacords, but then again the greedy labels/management might screw this up by demanding 3-4 ep´s a year.

Spot on comment. Metallica did huge things for metal in the 80s, then like Chuck Schuldiner said, they killed it off. Or at least they played a part in it. And I certainly remember how many turned their backs on them when Load was released to endorse Korn, Sepultura, Pantera, Machine Head etc...

I agree with some of the stuff Mike is saying. Now with times of digital downloading and imploding record companies, bands are not making albums anymore and with the short attention span everyone has now, it's going back to the times of the 50-60's where popular music is all about the single and not a complete body of work on one album. Sucks since i've always been an album guy and not one song. I'd rather listen to ALL of Rainbow Rising rather than throw on "Stargazer".

But as far as people thinking bands from the 90's and beyond will be considered "classic rock?" i dunno, i don't really see it either but then again I never thought when i was a teen i would think bands like Motley Crue, Guns&Roses or even bands like Nirvana and even "The Big 4" would be "classic rock" and they are.

And i agree to a point record companies back then were to blame for certain bands demise since bands were listening to them and following the trends, but I'm getting sick of artists and bands blaming them 100% for their demise. You just didn't have the balls to stick to your guns and you got fucked. Bands like AC/DC, Rush and to a point Metallica did what the fuck they wanted and are still relevant today. Sure you get a LuLu sometimes, but that wasn't a record company, that was them doing what they wanted and people reacting poorly.

In fairness to White Lion, never was a huge fan but I remember listening to a Greatest Hits album they released and you forget how many good songs they had, popular or not. After listening to that I did get to see Mike Tramp's White Lion play live years later and as great as the band and he was, it just wasn't the same.

their have been many great albums in this time but none of them have sold as much as they maybe should have or the bands used to do, but of course there are always few bands that get realy huge but that doesnt mean they are actualy more talented then many less selling bands, Nirvana are probably the worst band of the Seattle bands but they sold millions of Nevermind just because they were at the right time and were advertised to hell, so much that in the end Cobain killed himself because he wanted to be more know for the music then some fashion bullshit.

Metallica also, they started to sell more albums as soon as they started to make ballads and simpler radio rock friendly songs.

and i agree that the new Soundgarden,Black Country Communion and more are making great albums and better then many classic albums that did sell millions but they arent selling as much but that doesnt mean they are worse.

today it seems the less talent you have the more you sell, but we still have lots of great bands that are doing fine without the million selling albums and we just have to keep on buying them and then hopefully finally rock/metal will get hugely popular again, the gengre not just 1-2 bands.

i hate it when someone says metallica are great and then only know 1-2 songs and then maybe hate any other metal band, its the same with many other huge bands, people only know 1-2 songs from the time they were the new cool thing and dont know any other songs even though there are usually many better songs then the hits.

Lulu is probably the best album Metallica has done in 20 years, Master of Puppets is their best album and most of the so called fans that only know 2-3 songs of the black album barely know of Master of puppets and the albums before that. but still a fine band but hugely overrated.

White Lion ended in 91, therefore no other good music exists after that. Is that right?

Last classic album, rock genre, in my opinion, Radiohead's OK Computer, released may 1997. After that, bonafide classics, none.

He's totally right. Gone are the days of stuff like:

Double Vision
Don't Look Back
Pieces of Eight
The Wall

and the list could just continue.

Well sticking within rock, so to speak, I listen to quite a few genres of music so I wont get into releases like Yeahs - Show Your Bones or say something from Tori Amos.

Deftones,Accept,Filter,Janes Addiction,White Stripes,Manson,Dead Weather,Donita Sparks
Dio-Mom
Cult-Choice
Candlebox- Love
Tesla- ITN
NIN-With Teeth
KIngs of Leon - Only By the Night
Whitesnake - Good to Be Bad
Audioslave - Self Titled,Out of Exile
La Guns -Hollywood

Now classic rock is open to interpretation....On Blabbermouth people may not even think of say someone like the White Stripes or Kings of Leon as Rock . But , some of the bands I have are definitely not "pop" .
Also,i'm in my 40's and I was in high school during the 80's metal so it was in its prime and I have alot of great memories which adds to all the music . So, it was classic for me ( not as much as the 60's,70's Thats where the " true" classic rock comes from)
Rock music in the last 10 years may not seem like classic to us but, it will to alot of teenagers growing up now , right or wrong, I think. Bands like Nickelback will be classic releases to these kids.
So in 10 or 20 years some of the stuff I mention may seem classic to me , I dont know.
Commenting on the new VH from the guy above ; I'm a huge DLR era fan but, that release The songs are...boring. No hooks, no catchy choruses, no catchy guitar riffs. It sounds like a collection of uninspired B-sides.
I know you people wanted something from VH. Anything but, come on ! Yes I know, most, if not all, were throw aways from the 70's . There is a reason those were throwaways !
And the new Soundgarden is nothing like the old Soundgarden Just garbage except for a few ok songs like ; blood, bones, taree, halfway, worse.

I don't listen to any of these bands, but they are clearly part of what used to be broadly "classic rock" and moved a ton of product in the process: Stone Sour, Daughtry, Nickelback, Shinedown, Alter Bridge.

(I do respect the pipes on the latter two frontmen.)

The sales they booked absolutely helped call Chickenfoot, Black Country Communion, and The Damned Things into being.

Me, you, and Mike Tramp can deny it, but for millions of people (+/- 7 million in the US alone) the likes of Nickelback's All the Right Reasons IS a classic hard rock album -- one they'll love for the next 20 yrs.

Priestess- "Hello Master" is a near perfect album, AOR album for sure.(classified as stoner rock, but they have a classic rock vibe)

Supagroup- "Rules" This album is so underrated it makes me puke. Party rock not to be missed. these guys have it all, except fame.

Jim Jones Revue- "Burning Your House Down" its rock and roll, (like little richard with louder guitars) not hard rock, but this band's energy is phenominal.

Broken Teeth-"electric" this hasDangerous Toys singer belting out hard rock. love this album. raw.
