MADONNA's Guitarist MONTE PITTMAN Says Working With Former METALLICA Producer Was 'Great' - Dec. 31, 2012
Jason Saulnier of the MusicLegends.ca web site recently conducted an interview with Monte Pittman — who has recorded and toured with PRONG in addition to playing guitar for Madonna and "American Idol" finalist Adam Lambert. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

MusicLegends.ca: How was it recording your latest EP, "M.P.3: The Power Of Three, Pt. 1"?

Monte: It was great working with Flemming Rasmussen [METALLICA, MORBID ANGEL, EVILE]! We had one day in the studio and all four songs were recorded then.

MusicLegends.ca: Where did the ideas and concepts for the different parts on the EP come from?

Monte: I have a bunch of songs written and I thought they were a little too extreme from each other to go together at first. Since I had a day to record with Flemming, we were able to knock out the acoustic tracks. Since I had that ready to go, I decided to release it as an EP.

MusicLegends.ca: How was it recording with Flemming Rasmussen?

Monte: It was great working with someone and you can reference something he has done before on one of your favorite albums. I could say, "You know the effect you used on this song," and he knows exactly what to do. It sounded incredible from the very beginning. He has a certain signature that you hear in his recordings. Even though METALLICA didn't make acoustic/singer-and-songwriter types of recordings, they still had those elements as intros. You hear that same texture on "M.P.3: The Power Of Three, Pt. 1".

MusicLegends.ca: What were your earliest influences?

Monte: When I was a kid, my sister turned me on to KISS. That's where it all started. I was born at one of the most opportune times in history. I got to be at the right age when a lot of new types of music were born. From MICHAEL JACKSON "Thriller" to MÖTLEY CRÜE "Shout At The Devil" as a kid all the way to PANTERA "Vulgar Display Of Power" or the first time my friend came over with a VHS tape of this new band called NIRVANA saying, "You have to see this video!" (which was "Smells Like Teen Spirit"). I haven't seen that kind of excitement in a long, long time.

MusicLegends.ca: Without social media, could bands today manage to survive?

Monte: It's created opportunities that have made people's careers. I think the groups that survive would survive even if it weren't around. It's great that you can spread the word all over the world. The downside is that anyone can create a Twitter account and write you whatever they want and there's no point in responding because you don't even know this person's name or what they look like. People can get really brave when they can hide behind an avatar.

Eager to hear the new album w/ Flemming Rasmussen.

Metallica should get Flemming for their next album!

It's not too late. He could bring them to play thrash metal again.

James , Lars , Kirk & Rob should make the move!

Madonna has become a pretty kick ass guitar player, Monte Pittman is not just her guitar player but her taught her how to play too!

Even if Metallica got Flemming, it wouldn't turn out good. I mean, you've got to believe that. They're still a good band but they lost something along the way. I'm not talking specifically about Cliff, but they lost a fire that will never be relit again.

Brought nothing to what was already there in terms of the music. Please refer to Metallica's demos for proof- they're virtually the same as the albums. Lars and James did most of the production (hence the bass being almost inaudible in any of their first four albums) and then Rasmussen just did his thing with the soundboard to translate whatever their demands were. So little did this guy bring, that James has stated that he's still unhappy with his guitar sound on Ride The Lightning, and Jason recorded the AJFA album with just one bass and one bass amp throughout (not that it matters anyway- you can't hear the bass)- AND, they were aiming for Mike Clink to produce that particular album but his schedule didn't allow it.

The first guy who had anything to do with their songwriting (and sound!) outside of the band was Bob Rock. I'm just saying this because a lot of people are like "bring back Flemming" and whatnot, but that is like essentially saying "please produce the record yourselves."

I think the closest to a Rasmussen (self produced) Metallica album was Death Magnetic, because of the way Rubin produces is almost like a consultant more than a guy who will hold their hands through the whole process.

...doesn't the headline read "Former Prong and current Madonna" guitarist? Based on the headline, neither a Madonna nor Metallica reference makes this post metal enough for a metal website. :-) Hail Prong.

"...(hence the bass being almost inaudible in any of their first four albums)..."

I'm not sure what you are listening to these albums with, but the bass is plenty audible on those albums, especially on the perfect (IMHO) Master of Puppets. Given the setup of Metallica's instrumentation, the bass is supposed to drive a song, not stand in the forefront (like on Overkill's W.F.O.). This would be different for a band such as, say, Motorhead where there is a lot more real estate to cover with fewer instruments.

It took me a while to be able to really hear/feel what the low end was doing on metal albums in general. I found the best way is to not hunt for it and just feel it. I know it sounds new age, stuck up, and snooty to say that but it works for me more than 20 years on.

Have a good one bro!

funny name, btw... I do miss Saigon Kick...

In any case, I said "almost" inaudible; certainly the low end is there on those albums (indeed more in the first 3 than AJFA), but in spite of that, the "production" from a conventional, traditional "producer"- in terms of both sound and music- wasn't on any Metallica album until Bob Rock came in. Lars and James were behind the production prior to that, almost 100%. That was my whole point.

I do see your point in terms of the bass role in this particular style of music, and I do agree, Master of Puppets is a great example of it. However, I must say, when you listen to the Black Album, you can not only feel, but also HEAR the bass- and it's not in the forefront, it's just an extremely well crafted album from a mixing and production point of view- not saying that one album is better than the other- that would be subjective discussion which is not something I'm interested in- just being plain objective about certain misconceptions that people have... like bringing Rasmussen back would do anything- when in fact it wouldn't.

People always make the mistake of associating the producer to the quality of the music on the album. The fact is that the music is written by the band, not the producer so it really does not matter who you get, the music will be the same, just sonically and tinkered with differently. And I agree with the comment above about Flemming's seemingly lack of bass in the audio, Ride, Puppets and Justice are all guilty of having little to no bass on the album and yet Kill Em All is crystal clear. Do the fucking math.
