Guitarist ROB CAGGIANO Quits ANTHRAX - Jan. 4, 2013
After a long and successful run as guitarist for the legendary thrash metal act ANTHRAX, Rob Caggiano has decided that it's time to move on and focus on his other passion: producing records for the time being. Already an acclaimed rock and metal producer, Rob has amassed a long list of production credits working with acts such as CRADLE OF FILTH (on their Grammy-nominated classic "Nymphetamine"), THE DAMNED THINGS, and Jesse Malin to name a few. Rob's production work on the most recent ANTHRAX studio album, "Worship Music", received high recognition, as the track "I'm Alive" received a Grammy nomination for "Best Rock/Metal Performance".

Being a member of the mighty ANTHRAX for the better part of the last 12 years is something that Caggiano is, of course, very proud of. This was not an easy decision to make.

"I'm extremely proud of my time in ANTHRAX," Caggiano says. "Actually, that's an understatement! We accomplished so many great things together over the years and I shared some of the best times of my life with these guys. As a band, we also weathered quite a few storms along the way. It's been a wild ride (to say the least) from Day One and I wouldn't change one single thing about the last 12 years.

"This is an extremely difficult and emotional decision for me to make, but my heart is just steering me in a different direction right now. I've always been one to follow my heart in everything that I do and while this might be one of the hardest decisions I have ever had to make, it feels like the right one for me at this time. Scott [Ian, guitar], Charlie [Benante, drums], Joey [Belladonna, vocals], Frankie [Bello, bass] (and [former ANTHRAX singer] John Bush) will always be part of my family and this decision doesn't change the way I feel about that in the slightest. I would also like to say thanks to all the amazing fans I've met and hung out with worldwide over the years. You guys always were and always will be the reason why I make music!

"In this day and age, being a musician isn't always easy — also an understatement — but the fans truly make it worthwhile for me. I hope to see each and every one of you again really soon. The fact that ANTHRAX is at the top of their game right now and totally 'out for blood' after all these years is a testament to this band's longevity and conviction! I'm truly honored to have been a part of their brilliant legacy."

Added the remaining members of ANTHRAX: "Rob has been an integral part of ANTHRAX for so many years, as our lead guitarist, in a production capacity, but most of all, as our close friend. His contributions to the band have been enormous. While we are sad that he is leaving, we wish him nothing but great success going forward, and hope to share the stage with him again sometime down the road.

"With the Metal Alliance Tour on the horizon, we have been considering several lead guitarist options, and will be making an announcement on that shortly."

Last September, Scott Ian said that he was confident that ANTHRAX's most recent formation would carry them into retirement.

"I've gone on record saying this will be the only version of ANTHRAX until there is no ANTHRAX," Ian told the Georgia Straight. "That's how I feel, absolutely, in my heart. I don't see why we would do anything different. This band sounds so great; we made a great record. And I'm super-excited about the future of this band creatively."

With this new direction, Caggiano very much looks forward to getting back to producing/recording/writing again in the immediate future.

"I can't wait to get back in the recording studio again!" he says. "Over the years, I've been blessed with the privilege of working with a wide range of great bands/artists from ANTHRAX and CRADLE OF FILTH all the way to BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, and I look forward to a hopeful continuation of that side of my career while I figure out my next move as an artist.

"By the way, in case anyone was wondering after reading all of this, I do FULLY intend to get back out there on the road very soon in some way shape or form... It's in my blood!

"Please feel free to follow me on Twitter @RobCaggiano for any and all updates on what I am up to."

Spitz: "Hey, Scott! Wanna go to church with me Sunday?"
Ian: "No man, but hey, how would you feel about rejoining Anthrax?" Kinda like a 'classic era lineup' reunion?"
Spitz: "Wow, that would be great, cause that record I made with Mustaine producing didn't sell shit, and like, the watch thing was kinda getting old...."

I wonder if Paul Crook would come back? He was GREAT, and he's in Scottie's father in law's band, last I knew.

Damn, that was kind of out of nowhere. Anthrax has been on a high since Big 4; kind of makes me wonder what the problem was, especially with how he keeps saying he's "getting back out there" soon and all that. He's quitting so he can be a producer, but he's figuring out his next move as an artist to get back out on the road as soon as possible? Contradictory.

It could be something as simple as he doesn't want to be out on the road as much as Anthrax does. Just because he says he will back out there in some capacity doesn't mean he wants to tour 300 days a year. It will be interesting to see what he does and who Anthrax gets to replace him.

Sure, Rob wants to get back into producing. That is probably half the story, and to be diplomatic that is the official story. He had a good run, so he isn't into slinging mud their way. Maybe they still are friends, who knows?

Personally, I think he was good at helping them craft songs, produce, and maybe rhythm guitar, but he wasn't all that great live in solos. He tried to overplay, and do speedy licks that weren't all that memorable and suiting for the music. I'd personally like to hear a lead player with more soul and feeling and originality. Just watch the blu ray for the big 4 shows and you'll see what I mean. Then watch the solos Spitz did on the reunion tour dvd from the first reunion with him and Joey.....now that is great shit. His solos were incredible live, and way better than the studio tracks he did in the 80's.

It could be possible like the above comment that the two dictators are very hard to work for? Ian and Benanate are not easy characters to build a band with. Hell, even Bello quit and had to join Helmet for awhile, and he is related to Charlie!

We will never see this guy again.
Everybody wants to sit in a studio and be a producer or engineer. Not an easy job to get, good luck with that.
Rob was great for leads in Anthrax, he ripped it nice. Leaving Anthrax now makes people wonder about a lot of things.
There are a million lead guitar players out there, he will be easily replaced as a player. I know he was a real nice guy, we threw back a few beers together when he was working on the Cradle Of Filth cd in Millbrook NY. I am sure Rob the Dude will not be easily replaced.
Anthrax is Joey Belladonna anyway, they are nothing without Joey ! ! ! Joey, I love you man, you fucking rule ! !

If I was in the band, Paul Crook would be my first option, cause he did a great job when Spitz left for the first time.
Anyway, I'm sure there are many great guitar players out there eager to get this place, so I don't think it was too much of a trouble to find a good replacement.
I wish the best luck for Rob and Anthrax!

Also enjoyed EVERY Spitz-era release.

Have to disagree with your first statement. I'm not saying he's a bad guitar player, but that was my main complaint with Rob was that he didn't play Spitz's solos at all as they were recorded - he totally improvised his own solos which changed the feel of the song (and in my opinion were pretty generic replacements).

Your statement reflects ignorance about music in general so I wonder if you are really a guitar player. Dan Spitz is an incredible lead soloist. All his solos are genreally complex but also melodic and most of all memorable. He's a also trained in Jazz music theory so he knows his way around thing technically.

i know i am one of the VERY few that think he was a great guitar player and the albums he was on were some of their best!

i also think he did better on the albums he was on that Dan Spitz could come up with now...the way he played on the reunion tour wasn't that great, and his work with his new band Red Lamb is alright, but nothing nearly as good compared to his older leads on the Anthrax tunes, and i just don't think he could come up with anything better than what Rob was doing the last few albums.

also, though, i'm not sure i would be willing to welcome in ANOTHER new member in this band....i liked Rob right, and toward the end i did start to like Dan Nelson as well, but i just don't want to even think about this happening to my favorite band of the BIG 4, and i don't want another new member in the band....

things have been really strange within the band the last few years, and with almost every member leaving their last few tours a lot (especially Charlie), i think this band is really falling apart worse than they ever have in the past.

i still wish them good luck....Worship Music was great, and with how long they've taken to do new albums, they certainly owe it to themselves and the fans that are still sticking with them, to come up with a few more albums yet.

highly doubtful that Spitz will ever return... the guy has 2 autistic kids. I don't see him saying "hey honey i'm gonna go on tour now, you stay here and take care of 2 kids that require full time attention... and sell some watches or something while i'm gone!"

not gonna happen!

If not Spitz, I don't think they'll go either with an unknown talent (they won't want a Nelson situation again) or an accomplished player (they don't want a third ego in the band). I say it'll be someone relatively unknown but pro who will get the job done for a paycheck.

I think the move will be to hire a temporary guitarist for the upcoming tour. Even if it is Spitz (which would be a good business move) I don't think any commitments will be made or offered so close to the end of the touring cycle for "Worship Music". Unless this was the end of Robs contract and he made his intentions known weeks or months ago and the band have been looking or have already decided on a permanent replacement. With the writing and recording process for the new record on the horizon Scott, Charlie, Frank and Joey could do the record as a four piece with Zakk and other players contributing leads and Charlie also doing some like they did on "Stomp 442" (a HUGELY underrated effort!). For the tour - if not Spitz and probably not Crook (he's working with Papa Loaf) I'll place my bet on Ted Aguilar from Death Angel. DA are about to start writing their next record and since that usually involves Rob and Mark primarily Ted has the time to do something as do Will and Damien(Hail Satan Reunion!! With Sideburns, Sven and Tony!). Mark and Rob also have that Carls Jr. cash rolling in so there's no hurry HAHA. Whatever ANTHRAX decides I think they know that hiring a new permanent player has to be done right, it can't be a revolving door - for the sake of stability and credibility (that has been rebuilt with Worship Music). I wish them all the best and look forward to the tour!

Since Dan Spitz is a huge born again Christian, maybe he should go play with Megadeth and have Chris Broderick play in Anthrax, or maybe even Alex Skolnick.

COMMENT | POSSIBLE REASON FOR HIS QUITTING ?

Something I just thought of after reading all the posts...

Possibly Rob had a contract with them that ended at the end of 2012, and they had to make a choice to either make him a band member officially (if he wasn't already), or hire him under another contract. He might have said after all he did for this band, if he didn't get put into a position of actually being a full fledged band member/part of the Anthrax corporation and ownership, he was going to quit. They might have got greedy and said that there are only 3 owners( Scott, Charlie, Frankie) and that they won't let another person join. They might have offered him another contract and he said it was time to make things official. They refused.

(and I'm sure Joey is on a contract basis, and they never let him become an official owner in the band either in case they decide to fire him again, or in case Joey wants to start making decisions).

Thoughts?

Why is there so much fucking drama in this band?? I'm really bummed about this news. Rob's been one of my favorite guitar players for the longest time now. His leads on Worship Music are amazing to say the least. He's is a HUGE part of Anthrax and his skills will be sorely missed. I'm actually depressed right now! I just hope he gets out there again real soon. Another Damned Things record would be amazing actually. Rob's a really talented guy so I'm sure he'll be fine in whatever he does next but he must have some really good reasons for leaving Anthrax right now. After all, look at how many line up changes they've had over the years. They actually have a revolving door for drummers right now too. It's ridiculous As great as Worship Music is, somethin's not right with these guys!

I could never really get past the fact that he didn't bother to play the original solos correctly. When I was a kid if you replaced the lead guitarist, the new guy had to be good enough to play the shit the way it was written. I appreciate that he was a very good producer who really helped them with their sound. But as a live guitarist he never really did it for me.

I don't know how Tweeter works cause I don't have an account, but if that's a sign, maybe I'm wrong in saying Dan Spitz would not a best choice, cause remember, the guy has a lot of commitments besides Anthrax, like his wife, his health problems, his autistic twin kids, his watches...
As a 40 year old fan, I really hope the best for Rob and Dan, but I'm worried about another step in the wrong direction for the band, as happened so many times in the past...

Bush = A. Saint
Rob C. = Great replacement for Spitz
Spitz + Ian = Top five guitar combos ever
Spitz + Anthrax = Not going to happen again unfortunately

The lifestyles and personalities are just too far apart at this time.

Rob Caggiano is great with Anthrax on so many levels. I wish him the best of luck on his musical journey and I can't wait to see where he ends up. I will most likely stop listening to these guys once and for all after this. They don't deserve my attention any more. To the few idiots that keep posting Spitz nonsense, haven't you heard that mess already with their reunion tour back in 2005-2006? That shit was a total joke! Spitz can't play to save his fucking life (fact) and the last thing I need to see onstage is a shirtless dwarf flexing muscles and being a poser. Yes, ATL was a great album in the 80's but it sounds dated and cheesy as all hell in 2013. Get over it! Spitz can't even come close to being able to play Rob's leads on Worship Music (also fact). I would probably pay some good money just to see him try though, if this shit goes that direction. That will also undoubtedly be my last Anthrax show ever. So sad

I simply can't stand Spitz's guitar playing but I DO respect his contribution to the metal world. That is obviously only my opinion BUT so is every other moronic comment posted on here. This is music we're talking about and of course music is subjective. However when I listen to the Alive 2 record and I hear Dan Spitz playing sloppy as all fucking hell, my opinion starts turning into fact! Slop is slop no matter how you slice it and it's not really debatable. I've seen Rob Caggiano quite a few times with Anthrax and once with the Damned Things a while back. He was absolutely incredible every time! His leads are sick and his rhythm playing is devastating. Rob is an unbelievable guitar player and I simply think he destroys Spitz on every level. Of course Spitz has some classic solos from back in the day. I won't deny that. I am in fact a guitar player myself and while it's only a hobby for me I can actually play the solos for Among, Mosh, and Madhouse easily note for note. When I tried to learn Rob's solos for Devil That You Know and I'm Alive recently, I gave up straight away! His guitar playing is so much more advanced than mine it's fucking stupid. Take that for what it's worth but also DO THE MATH
