Original JUDAS PRIEST Singer AL ATKINS 'Bears No Grudge Against' His Former Bandmates - Jan. 5, 2013
Greece's Rockoverdose.gr recently conducted an interview with original JUDAS PRIEST vocalist Al Atkins. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

Rockoverdose.gr: So second album released recently with guitarist Paul May [as ATKINS MAY PROJECT]. Looks like the project is running well?

Atkins: Yes, it has been received really well by the worldwide press so far. When it was released in November, it was voted "album of the month" in a metal magazine in Denmark so it was off to a good start.

Rockoverdose.gr: What are your feelings on this album?

Atkins: It has to be one of the very best recordings I have ever been involved with. Our first offering, "Serpents Kiss", took us by surprise how well it was received and they were just a bunch of really good random songs that Paul had written but this time Paul wrote all the material with me and my vocal style in mind so I was more comfortable singing "Valley of Shadows". From the heavy opener, "Welcome To The Nightmare", the album weaves its way through classic British metal, heavy blues rock and even progressive metal songs, so there's something for everyone on this album.

Rockoverdose.gr: Is there an option for the ATKINS MAY PROJECT to go live?

Atkins: We would really like to put a band on the road and would have a great set list with songs from ATKINS MAY and old songs that I have written from JUDAS PRIEST and from my solo catalogue too. We will be looking at finding a good promoter to put this thing together soon and we have already been asked to play far-off places like the West Coast of USA and even India, so who knows? We would like to come over to Greece too, so if you know of a promoter out there point him in our direction??

Rockoverdose.gr: What was your reaction when K.K. Downing left JUDAS PRIEST?

Atkins: I was shocked like everyone else, but he is 60 years old and if he feels it's time for him to retire, that's up to him. I thought he may return to record another album and play the odd festival in a six-piece lineup like IRON MAIDEN did, but that's not to be, so I have been told.

Rockoverdose.gr: Having known that you wouldn't last at your day job after you quit JUDAS PRIEST, do you regret that decision?

Atkins: At the time, no. I had formed a great rock band called LION with Bruno Stapenhill on bass from the first PRIEST lineup and Pete Boot from BUDGIE, and we were having a great time back on the road, which lasted about four years. All this time, I could see JUDAS PRIEST climbing that ladder and it was great to see something I had been involved with making it to the top and they desereved it.

Rockoverdose.gr: Do you find the appropriate credit was given to you, having written songs on the first two albums, but also having offered that legendary band name nowadays?

Atkins: "Yes and no" would be my answer... I think credit was given to me, but I wished that they would have put my name as a past member on their official web site.. It wouldn't have done them any harm, but I bear no grudge against them. After all, it could be their management who stops a lot of things happening. I'm still in touch with some of the band and went to Ian's [Hill, bass] house for a New Year party last week.

Rockoverdose.gr: Are you considering moving on with HOLY RAGE, or a new solo album? What are your plans for 2013?

Atkins: HOLY RAGE has been put on the back burner for now, and yes, I will be recording another solo album this year, but it will be re-recordings of all my old favorite songs I have written since my time with JUDAS PRIEST up until now. "Never Satisfied" and "Winter" will be the only two JUDAS PRIEST songs, but I have a surprise guest on one of those tracks and other guests will also be performing too. There will also be a never-seen-before classic photograph of JUDAS PRIEST and me from '73 in the inlay, so looking forward to that. I have also been asked to work with Stevie Young, Angus's nephew, on some new material, so we will see where that goes. In the meantime, I must concentrate on ATKINS MAY PROJECT videos that we will be filming in the coming months ahead...

Time flies. It's been only 40 years since he left Priest.

Looks like Glenn Tipton in that pjc. Just needs to stick out his pinky on his right hand. Same guitar, same stance.

yeah, I don't understand why this guy gets any credit for that at all. It's like dave mustaine whining about metallica. sure it was his past, and i'm glad everybody is cool, but really that is his one claim to fame. I would have more respect for him if they just referred to him as former Lion vocalist, or something to that effect. I also don't like the fact that he tries to make fun of Rob Halford when he thinks he can get away with it. More than anything that pisses me off.

Al co-wrote many songs on 'Rock A Rolla' and a few that appeared on 'Sad Wings of Destiny', given he is no where near the singer Halford is, and the original vocal tracks are not the ones Halford used its debatable. He does not appear on any recording with Priest so it's not like he's Paul D'ianno who has a legitimate beef in my opinion.

They never would have made it with Al.

I love his solo material. I have 3 of his albums and they sound awesome. My only complaint is he feels the need to rerecord Judas Priest songs on every album. The Victim of Changes album was cool, because it was a whole album of it, but now its kinda old.

Sure, you were part of the 1st (r'n'b) version of Judas Priest before you all quit. You all quit the band.

Sure, you were part of the 2nd hard rock/early metal version of Judas Priest when KK and Ian Hill asked you to join their new band.

Sure, together you named the new band as Judas Priest because KK liked the name before.

Sure, you were part of some of the early Judas Priest songs and performed with Judas Priest on their early gigs somewhere in England.

But again, Al...you quit the band, way before Judas Priest even released the debut album. Rob Halford and Glenn Tipton came in, toured, recorded the debut album and together they - KK, Ian, Rob, Glenn and all the drummers - made Judas Priest what the band is today.

Al...the fact that you performed on the first two and now long forgotten demos(!!!) and the early gigs of Judas Priest doesn't give you any concrete credit for presenting yourself as the known and famous "original Judas Priest singer"...40 fucking years later. That title belongs to no-one else than Rob Halford himself. Not to mention any essence as to whether or not you "bear any grudge against" your "former bandmates"...They didn't include your name on their website? Fuck! So what! Your name is in the songwriting credits on some of the songs of the debut album and surely your name is included on some ardent fans live show chronicles.

Al...if you look at all the early ex-members of e.g. Iron Maiden, people who were in the band before the lineup that recorded and released the debut album Iron Maiden, they're not in the media all the time presenting themselves as "original members" or "ex-members" of the band.

Paul Di'Anno, for example to make my point clear, is a huge blob of douchebaggery these days, but he at least recorded the vocals on the first two Iron maiden albums and did almost two full album tours with the band before Bruce Dickinson came in, Paul can consider himself as the known and famous "original Iron Maiden singer"...Hell, even Dennis Stratton or Clive Burr are not in the media all the time stating how they are "original members" or "ex-members" of the band, even though Dennis is on the first album and Clive on the first two albums...they at least have recorded their parts on a full length album of the band in question...unlike you, Al.

Al, you were in Judas Priest some 40 years ago. You were there in the beginning, writing with them, performing with them. Your credits, however, are not even close to being enough for you or anyone to call you the "original Judas Priest singer". There could have been several singers just like you in the band before Rob Halford came in and made the first album and the rest of everything with Judas Priest. The first two drummers, the two Johns, John Partridge and John Ellis, are not in the media hailing themselves as the "original drummer" or "ex-drummer" or stating how they "bear no grudge against" their former "bandmates" about anything. Even the third drummer, also called John, John Hinch, who made the first demo and the first single with Rob Halford and the great debut album Rocka Rolla (!!!) with Rob Halford and also Glenn Tipton, is not in the media all the time saying anything about anything. So shut up Al, at fucking last.

Sorry to be so harsh, but these are the facts.

just sucks!!!!!!!!! music is not half bad but his vocals are beyond weak. as for his priest past he is just as bad as the guy who first sang with AC/DC. great you were in the band at one time, guess what nobody cares! I don't care about anything priest did before British Steel. they are 2 different bands to me,one thet sucked and one that kicked serious ass. I saw them open for Kiss on the Dynasty tour and thought they were awful. could not believe the same band released living after midnight a year later.

So you like Priest for their more commercial recordings? British Steel, PoE cant hold a candle to SWoD, SAS or SC! I like SFV, Defenders, about half RID, Painkiller and AoR but Turbo is total crap, except for the song Reckless.

Totally agree. If this guy was such a big part of the original lineup and had any kind of chemistry with the band, then why didn't Priest ask him to come back when Halford left in the 90's? Last time I checked The band sought out Ripper Owens who was only known for being in a Priest cover band. You hear that sound Al? That's the sound of history saying that a Rob Halford sound alike was a better fit for the band than you. The band didn't even have a record deal with this guy on vocals.

rac1965 is right. I never really cared for much Priest after the 70's when they went commercial. I'll admit Screaming is a amazing album no matter how much "pop" is in it.

Sad Wings of Destiny is still one of the top 10 albums recorded EVER. How anyone dare to call that sucking is totally screwed in the head and has no idea of GREAT music.

Anyone who thinks "living after midnight" is great and defines Priest need not post in here anymore please there laggerlugger.

Hey Sabbathman I don't see any of those other musicians actively playing music where people in the buisness would be talking about them. Hell Al could tell everyone he knows not to mention he was in Priest and every writer would still mention it. WELCOME to the real world and music business.

I love every post I ever read from you but don't understand all the negativity towards this guy. Hell I don't know a thing about him besides "original singer of JP". But it is unrealistic to expect anyone to mention him in the press as anything but. No one would pay attention to a unknown man in his 60's putting out a new album. Guess what probably with this still no one will show interest.

And why would he hold a grudge he quit???????????

Cheers Sabbathman you still rule just giving you another angle to look at it from. No harm no foul.

and anyone who says the 70's defined them is a poser who thinks saying that makes them look cool. you probably were not even around then. or better yet 1 of those morons who think making music people like and and selling allot of copies makes them a sell out. imagine that a band and a heavy 1 at that reaches the goal evetone strives for and you call them sell outs. yeah jusy awful they became rich and famous how dare they.

I never said the 70's defined them I just said that era of their music was a lot better than the dumbed down AOR approach they took to with the 80's albums. There are some great songs from that era but a lot of obvious reaching for mass acceptance radio ready tripe. I've seen them on every US tour since 1979 so I am a huge fan of the band but its quite obvious if you've followed them that they really did "Sell out" in a way by writing songs for airplay in the US for sure and leaving the more eh uh "progressive" stuff behind with the 70's. NOT a total sellout. They deserve their rich and famousness but that doesn't always equate great music and art.

The last time I saw them I actually cried while watching Living After Midnight because I knew I'll never be in the same room with them again. I love the song but cmon it was and is a song meant to reach as many people as possible and not so much anything from the heart.

Sabbathman glad you said that you saved me hella writing because I was going to make the same points. Lets see now what Priest cd has this fucker singing on it hummmm can't remember the name of it ohhhhhhhh because there isn't one what kind of sorry fucker try's to get credit for shit and the only thing you can show is your name as part writer on a few songs wtf. My Rock and Rolla record has Rob Halford singing on it so did the next 1, the 1, after that the next one after that all the way up to Painkiller. So with that said where's the 1st Priest cd with this hack singing on it? The Original and only singer for Priest is the Metal God Rob Halford.

Rob Halford was and is the only singer for Priest. Sorry Tim. Tha includes you too. Or should I say that doesn't include you.

I don't see Rod Evans claiming to be Deep Purple original singer, Purple fans would pick Gillan over him. Same goes with Atkins, even worse he never sang on anything official from Priest. Rob Halford will always be one and only original singer of Priest.
