ANTHRAX Guitarist Talks Recording Classic-Rock Covers - Jan. 5, 2013
ANTHRAX recently spent time in the studio recording several cover versions of some of their favorite rock classics, to be included with the upcoming re-release of 2011's "Worship Music", the group's first new album in eight years and first with singer Joey Belladonna since 1990.

In addition to RUSH ("Anthem") and BOSTON ("Smokin'") covers, ANTHRAX also recorded its versions of AC/DC's "T.N.T.", JOURNEY's "Keep On Runnin'", THIN LIZZY's "Jailbreak" and CHEAP TRICK's "Big Eyes", which ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian tells Billboard.com may also possibly surface as digital downloads for those who already own the "Worship Music" album.

"It was a lot of fun, especially because a lot of those [songs] aren't, I guess, normal for us or like so much of our repertoire — although they are because they're songs we all knew," Ian explains. "Maybe on paper the idea of us doing something like that seems weird, until you hear them and then it makes sense. And Joey's performance on the JOURNEY song, specifically, really blows my mind. Someone mentioned that [JOURNEY guitarist] Neal Schon better not hear this or we might lose our singer." ANTHRAX also also laid down a cover version of BLACK SABBATH's "Neon Knights" for the upcoming Ronnie James Dio tribute album which is being assembled by the singer's widow and longtime manager Wendy Dio.

Regarding ANTHRAX's upcoming touring activities, Ian tells Billboard.com: "We thought last month was going to be the end of the cycle; that was pretty much the plan at the beginning of last year. [2012] was a really good, busy year, and when we finished in Europe in December we figured that was it. But we keep getting more and more offers to go on tour. We've always been a touring band, so that works in our favor, I guess. In the past we wouldn't think about doing the States four times unless you were selling millions of albums or something. But there's a demand for it, which makes us happy."

"Worship Music" has sold more than 100,000 copies in the U.S. since its September 2011 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan. A track from the CD, "I'm Alive", received a Grammy nomination last month for "Best Rock/Metal Performance". This is the fourth Grammy nomination for ANTHRAX.

As reported on Friday, guitarist Rob Caggiano has announced his departure from ANTHRAX to focus on his other passion: producing records. A replacement axeman has not yet been announced.

I'd rather pay for an EP, than buy another copy of this album. It was great, but I've got it on CD and two copies on vinyl (signed).

Who am I kidding...I can't wait to hear those covers and I'm certain to go shell out a few bucks for it, however its released.

Can't wait to hear "Keep on Runnin'". It's cool that we finally get to hear Joey officially do a Steve Perry song all these years later.

Add a last minute Stryper cover to lure Spitz back into the band.

I'd call it the Fat Albert voice. Wonder if the monitors sucked -Joey started singing the last verse while the guitar solo was still going? He was probably trying to sing as close as to Dio as he could.

Looks like hard core fans get ripped again. Worship music is an awesome album but this record company ploy just pisses me off. Just like when bands release special tour editions 6 months after the album came out. Anthrax . This is partly why illegal downloading i so rampant.

I would say they do this because of illegal downloading, it's a way to make more off virtually the same product. Unfortunately it is the diehards that get fleeced and the ones downloading illegally will just do it with the new content as well. My hat goes off to Testament though, they released all their special additions and such with the release of the album.

Nothing wrong with having fun playing covers, but thinking anyone will want to actually buy that is delusional... especially if we're talking about classic songs from classic bands.

Cool. Bummed that Rob left the band. I was really hoping there'd be no more lineup changes in Anthrax. Maybe they can get Dan Spitz back in the band.

Yeah! Get rid of a singer with amazing range and get the guy who grunts instead! Don't get me wrong, I actually like some of the Bush material, but Joey is a million times better singer, IMHO.

All of these songs make perfect sense since Joey is singing with them again. If it wasn't him they wouldn't do this.

So do this mean we'll get another cover song in the set list. I've seen Anthrax nearly 20 times live and some shows half the set is covers. I've never understood that. So much great stuff from Spreading The Disease and other albums I would go nuts for instead of covers would be killer for once.

I'm not even bummed Rob left the band, I got tired of him and his beanie anyways. Bring back Dan Spitz, that would be the way to go. Glad Joey is back, I do not miss Bush.

not just an ep, or a few cover songs tacked on to the Worship Music reissue. If theyre playing the entire Among the Living album on tour, they need to get Dan back on lead guitar and record the show for a DVD.

I have a feeling that Dan Spitz won't be back in the band. I only say that because Worship Music was a decent success and I don't know if he'll want to play those songs. Probably not. Maybe if they just stuck w/ the old shit, or just made a new album, replacing the WM songs with it in the setlists.

so if theyre playing the Among the Living album on tour, which starts in feb how is a brand new guitarist going to learn the whole album in a month in time for the tour? Afte the orignal reunion tour back in '05, I cant see why Dan spitz ever left, the guitar work of this band is not the same without him.

The impressive thing for me is that they sold over 100 thousand copies of their new album It just shows you when a band makes great music people will still buy it even when 90 percent of fans are downloading it for free.

If this album came out during the pre-download era it would have sold well over a million copies.

Congrats to them for still working hard and making a great album

I'm suprised no one picked up on Joey coming in early coming out of the solo at 2:30, but he covers his mistake pretty well. He has always had a great range and this cover is awesome. They do heaven and hell real well too.
