KLAUS MEINE: 'There Is Still Life In Those Bloody Old SCORPIONS' - Jan. 5, 2013
Three years after announcing they were winding down their career, German hard rock veterans SCORPIONS appear to have changed their minds.

In an interview in the new issue of Classic Rock magazine, the band's lead singer, Klaus Meine, explained: "As the emotion built, it [not retiring] became a gradual decision. It's one thing to say, 'This is going to be the end of the SCORPIONS,' and another to do it. Our 'Sting In The Tail' album [2010] was such a success that a whole new generation of fans joined the party. It was amazing. And you know that with all the best parties, it's sometimes hard to find the door?"

SCORPIONS spent the first three months of 2012 in the studio with producers Mikael "Nord" Andersson and Martin Hansen resurrecting a dozen unfinished songs from what some people believe was the band's best and most creative period — leftovers from the albums "Blackout" (1982), "Love At First Sting" (1984), "Savage Amusement" (1988) and "Crazy World" (1990) — for an album that is tentatively scheduled for release later this year. "It will be material that was never finished; songs with pure SCORPIONS DNA from a very exciting time," Meine confirmed to Classic Rock. "Once we close the book on the crazy touring schedule, that's something we'll pick up again." An album of all-new SCORPIONS material may surface as well, according to Meine. "At this point nothing is out of the question," he said. "When we said adios with 'Sting In The Tail', our label, Sony Music, cried, 'No, no, no… What about this idea? What about that idea?' There are some offers you just can't refuse. I don't want to say too much right now, but I can reassure you there is still life in those bloody old SCORPIONS."

He added: "We'll just have to see what's realistic. We're working on a documentary movie about the band's history. We filmed the tour's big finale in Munich, which was very emotional."

Fan-filmed video footage of SCORPIONS' July 7, 2012 concert at Nikon at Jones Beach Theater in Wantagh, New York can be seen below.

Hey Scorps, retiring from RnR is not acceptable, it is so 'un-RnR,'

please start by firing your last producer & co. who first suggested that.

Not sure what new generation of fans Klaus refers to, I think crowds

he saw are older fans who came back because they thought was last tour.

I myself skipped these last tours, but plan to comeback if Scorps do the

same...from retirement.

They have taken Saxon's approach the last few albums. This is what people want to hear. Whatever they were doing during the unbreakable era certainly isn't. They have to keep the momentum going like Saxon and continue to hire good producers that know hard rock and power metal and know how those songs should be written.

back only if you have a album as good as sting or the blackout era albums. your fans want the classic scorpion sound not the sound of today. beisdes the kids that listen to today's music do not care about about old bands trying to sound new. first heard of them when they played the zoo on the radio and blackout is still my favorite anbum by them. do not care about anything before then, heard it and it sounds like a different band and one I think sucks compared to the blackout era. and uless you are older than me(in my 50's) then don't try and sound cool and say you love the early stuff best. we both know you are lyng.

I won't say the earliest stuff is best (I'm in my 40s), but you got to admit Hell Cat and Virgin Killers are some pretty cool tracks.

I like the Blackout era, but to suggest that the 70s Scorpions sucked is absurd. I'm not going to argue about it, but if you like music, give "Dark Lady", "In Trance", or "Sails of Charon" another shot sometime.

I saw The Scorpions years ago(early 80's?) in Vancouver. Iron Maiden was the back up band and new to me. I believe I was only familiar with the number of the beast. Well I was and still am a Scorp's fan but Maiden hands down ruled that night.

Saw the Scorps when it mattered on the Blackout and Love at First Sting tours. Then I saw them sometime around 2001 / 2002 and was bored as hell.

Get back the chops the band possessed on Love Drive and Animal Magnetism and go from there.

Tokyo Tapes = Awesome Live Album

Why not? It boosts sales, which is the point. Good on them for continuing, but it was a farewell ploy as crass as when Kiss or anyone else does it.

Love the Scorps, and they did what any vetern band does when cashing in."The retirement, final come see us while you can world tour".. Then they don't. Two orginial guys left in the band, yet the Scorpions get a pass on being labeled money grubbing sell outs. Get outta here! And welcome back.

to think that bands like the Scorps are even THINKING of retiring? It sucks when reality sets in and we have to look at things like age, stamina, audience draw, etc., and know that we won't have these bands forever. Don't want to seem like a downer, but there doesn't appear to be any bands out there that will go down as "classic" as Maiden, Motorhead, etc, and become true legends. That is what's scary.

I see the Scorpions have learned well from The Who, Kiss, The Eagles, Ozzy Osbourne, and many more. Lie about your retirement, and watch those crowds fill up. I'm ashamed to admit I fell for this, too, and caught one of their farewell concerts.

Rare bands with integrity -- let's see, how about Deep Purple, still going strong, not lying to their fans about retiring, still recording new music.

Rare artist who retired and stayed retired -- only one I can think of at the moment is David Bowie.

Reunite with Uli! Use the extra guitar. He cannot sing and that ruined his solo career, but KLAUS sure as hell can take the mic. Best Scorps albums are the 70s and early 80s albums, but they've had a few great songs since then, including a couple on Unbreakable. BUT, this next promised album of unfinished ditties from their 80s period had better for good...., and not all ballads damn it! I've loved the Scorps since 1980 when I got my first album of theirs, but most of their albums of the last 30 years do not get much playing time at all on my turntable because their older ones are just SO much better.

Personally, I take everything Klaus Meine says with a grain of salt. When I saw the Scorpions in 1985, he told the crowd that the band loved playing in Virginia because we really knew how to party. But then they released "World Wide Live" and he says the EXACT SAME thing to a crowd in California. I felt totally betrayed.

Good die young is a classic song from their last album -- They won't retire with the kind of dough they are raking in -- and guys like me will see them on their 2nd or 3rd retirement shows --- its all good -- just play sails of charon with Uli, Mathias, and Rudolph -- maybe bring back Wolfgang Dziony for a a couple of songs as well...

These particular guys are just the greatest and I really will lament the day they stop rockin' and rollin'. I want more, more SCORPIONS materials for to have for years to come.

And also, if anyone is wondering, I just picked up the SCORPIONS last album, entitled, 'Comeblack'. Funny name, I know, but the album really rocks! It's so great to have that along with the originals. James Kottak and Pawel (drums, bass, respectively) bring some energy and rawness to go along with their metal side and re-ignite those 7 early tracks. The covers (6 songs) are fantastic as well. And I had never heard most, if not all of them, I like them, though.

So pick up that album and it will satisfy your stinging needs. Cause, let's face it, we all are addicts to the STING!
