MOTÖRHEAD, ANTHRAX, CANNIBAL CORPSE, PRIMAL FEAR Celebrate 30th Anniversary Of METALLICA Debut - Jan. 21, 2013
MOTÖRHEAD, ANTHRAX, CANNIBAL CORPSE and PRIMAL FEAR are among the bands who are featured on Metal Hammer Germany's "A Tribute To Kill 'Em All" CD, celebrating the 30th anniversary of METALLICA's classic debut album. The collection features every single song from the original METALLICA LP performed by a different artist and includes two exclusive tracks: "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth" by EISREGEN and THE VISION BLEAK, and "Jump In The Fire" by DUST BOLT.

"A Tribute To Kill 'Em All" track listing:

01. Hit The Lights - BLACK TIDE
02. The Four Horsemen - BURDEN OF GRIEF
03. Motorbreath (live) - RAGE
04. Jump In The Fire - DUST BOLT (exclusive)
05. (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth - EISREGEN and THE VISION BLEAK (exclusive)
06. Whiplash - MOTÖRHEAD
07. Phantom Lord - ANTHRAX
08. No Remorse - CANNIBAL CORPSE
09. Seek & Destroy - PRIMAL FEAR
10. Metal Militia - DEW-SCENTED

Originally issued on July 25, 1983 through the independent label Megaforce Records, "Kill 'Em All" was recorded in two weeks on a miniscule budget in upstate New York. Although only 1,500 copies were initially pressed, the album was reissued by Elektra Records after the band signed to that label in 1984 and has since been certified triple platinum for sales of more than three million copies.

The original title of "Kill 'Em All" was "Metal Up Your Ass".

The album's opening cut, "Hit the Lights", was the first song that frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich wrote together after forming METALLICA. An early version of the track appeared on the 1982 compilation "Metal Massacre".

Lead guitarist Dave Mustaine was replaced by Kirk Hammett shortly before recording commenced, although Mustaine still has several writing credits on the disc and went on to form MEGADETH.

A number of songs from the album are still part of METALLICA's set list to this day, including "The Four Horsemen", "Seek and Destroy" and "No Remorse".

METALLICA has since gone on to become one of the biggest rock bands in the world, selling tens of millions of copies of its eight studio albums, including 16 million alone of 1991's self-titled "black album." The band's ninth effort, "Death Magnetic", arrived in 2008.

In 2008, Metal Blade Records owner and CEO Brian Slagel conducted interviews with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich to coincide with the 25th anniversary of "Kill 'Em All". Watch the six-and-a-half-minute clip below.

I remember being at an in-store appearance during the MoP tour and every time someone would hand James a copy of Kill 'Em All, he would turn it over and look at the back. I would assume it was looking to see if it was a Megaforce or Elektra pressing. I've always wondered how many copies total were pressed by Megaforce. I have vivid memories of looking at that record many times in the store and then finally purchasing a copy of it during Spring Break. Returned to school with Metallica written all over my book cover and one guy asking "Who is Metallica?" My reply was a band that fast and tight. His reply, "They won't make it big." Fast forward to a headlining date on the MoP Tour and who was fighting for a spot on the barricade in the GA section. Yep, it was him and I told that same story to everyone around. It was mighty funny seeing his ass get dogged.

I remember bringing a tape of Kill Em All to high school and playing it for all the "Maiden dudes" and anyone who would listen. They all ridiculed me. "It's not as cool as the Scorpions". "This sucks" "Whatever..." Now Metallica's their favorite band.

ah yes, when it was all angst, beer, speed, moronic behavior and just not giving a fuck about what anyone thought about them.

83-88, there was no better band on Earth.

91- present day, no worse band on Earth.

Sorry.

Why you gotta be like that? Who gives a shit anymore? There were people like you in the 80s too, jealous assholes. I was 14yrs old buying master of puppets and the douchbag fat hipster behind the counter was like "oh yeah, master of posers". Wtf? Why can't people grow up. When you're a kid, you identify yourself with the things you hate, as you mature you should be identifying yourself by the things you love. How about it mr fuzzy.

A guy calling himself Mr Fuzzy WOULD want "moronic behavior" for 30+ years.

I understand a lot of the hate towards Metallica, but I just can't feel all of it. I liked Re/Load, but aknowledge the vast departure. I like Garage Inc & S&M. I couldn't get in to St. Anger. And I wanna strangle them for selling "Metallica Monopoly". They went in to Kiss territory with that one. But Death Magnetic was great & I have similar memories like our friend Fani Dilth above.

Lot of years ago man. I first heard the album in a joint called Brian's Record Option in Kingston, Ontario. That album blew my mind.

I had heard Motorhead - was a big fan of Kiss, Rush, AC/DC, but Kill 'Em All - I did not stop ranting and raving about that album for a long time. Brian (store owner) got to the point where he was sick of me coming into the store pretty well every day and asking him to crank that album - he had a better sound system than I had access to.

Fun days - happy times.

I laugh at some guys' hard-on for Metallica. If you don't like or hate this band, then that's fine by me, its your choice, but to always take the time to talk shit... It must really be a closeted love that can't find a way to get out.

It's a bootleg. The tracks are demo versions. It's probably "worth something," but like any collectible, it's only worth what you can convince someone to pay for it. http://www.popsike.com/METALLICA-Metal-Militia-LP-No-Life-Till-Leather-RARE-86/330581519684.html

Just Bieber isn't even WORTH bitching about.

There have always been harmless bubblegum acts in pop music. Sure, he sucks, but is he hurting anyone?

Attacking him is like picking on a handicapped kid. Just let the kid be...

I guess you didn't read my comment entirely. Its one thing to talk about one's dislike / hate of an artist, but to do it all the time? In every article about any one artist or band?

Btw, I've never said anything about Beiber because I simply don't listen to his music, so why waste time shitting on him.

I remember I was living in Italy at the time this came out and it wasn't for sale it in the stores, so I asked my mother to buy this for me on her next trip to England at one of the coolest metal shops in London, the long gone "Shades" off Wardour Street, I've given loads of my parents money to that shop... ;-)

i don't spin it as much any more as Ride or Master, but it was obviously hugely influential and important.

would love to hear the Motorhead version of Whiplash. i can picture Lemmy pulling if off nicely.
