PETER STEELE: Authorized Biography In The Works - Jan. 22, 2013
The authorized biography of late CARNIVORE and TYPE O NEGATIVE frontman Peter Steele called "Soul On Fire" is in motion. Written by renowned metal journalist Jeff Wagner ("Mean Deviation: Four Decades Of Progressive Heavy Metal"), the book will be "a comprehensive investigation of [Peter's] life and music, supported by those who knew him best, written by a fan, for the fans."

A posting on the project's official Facebook page reads: "If you're a fan, have recollections of meeting Peter, have photos, tattoos, or anything, Facebook. This is a total labor of love and one that his followers will hopefully find an indispensable part of the TYPE O continuum."

Steele passed away on April 14, 2010 from heart failure. He was 48 years old.

"Going through a midlife crisis and having many things change very quickly made me realize my mortality," he told Decibel magazine in 2007. "And when you start to think about death, you start to think about what's after it. And then you start hoping there is a God. For me, it's a frightening thought to go nowhere. I also can't believe that people like Stalin and Hitler are gonna go to the same place as Mother Teresa."

Steele was born Petrus T. Ratajczyk on January 4, 1962 in Brooklyn, New York. He stood 6' 7" (201 cm) tall, and had a low, bass-heavy voice, which was one of the most recognizable features in TYPE O NEGATIVE's music.

Before forming TYPE O NEGATIVE, Steele played for the metal group FALLOUT and the thrash band CARNIVORE.

Wagner is a music connoisseur and metal historian, and a former editor of Metal Maniacs magazine. He has penned incisive liner notes for releases by EMPEROR, POSSESSED, DARK ANGEL, CONFESSOR and others. A music industry professional since 1994 and a lifelong music obsessive, Wagner lives for what he writes about and writes about what he lives.

He was the last of his kind. Huge loss musically speaking. I believe he was a genius level composer. I remember this shit like yesterday, hard to believe its been a couple years already.

He was also the first of his kind. Folks who didn't get a taste of Type O really missed out.

I'd read it. Jeff Wagner's book about Prog Metal was pretty good too.

I really regret not getting into Type O earlier in my life. Saw them when I was 13 at Ozzfest '97 and they didn't fit the mold of the other stuff I was exposed to that day (Fear Factory, Pantera, etc.)

Never appreciated him until he was gone. What a huge loss.

If that's the cover, it looks worse than the "authorized" memorial shirt. Still gonna buy it though.

I will be buyin this the second it's out.

I'd much rather have waited another 20 years for it to have ever been a necessity to have the big green bastid here.

Looking forward to the book though, having not read it yet I still recommend it to all.

Saw them at that '97 Ozzfest too. Also at the 9:30 Club in DC, the Trocadero in Philly, Crocodile Rock in Allentown PA. Lots of Type O shows.

Once on the Bloody Kisses tour with Danzig and Godflesh. 3 times on the October Rust tour, including getting backstage and meeting the band at the infamous "riot show" in Phoenix in 1996 (still have the UFEST shirt for that show)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lISfv6BHGSs I remember asking Pete if they were going to play any Carnivore songs, he said "nope, not this time, man" He couldn't have been more right. They didn't play anything!

Also saw them at every Ozzfest that they played at and at least 2 or 3 times on every tour after Bloody Kisses. It was so evident to see them year after year and see Pete's downfall with drugs. Meeting them in '96 when he looked like an evil version of Hulk Hogan and then meeting them at a meet and greet a decade or so later, you could tell he was really strung out and had lost a ton of weight. Really sad to see, as the performances suffered a lot also.

Out of the 15 or so times I saw the band live, the absolute best was at a small club called the Electric Ballroom in 1997. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUaAFGmbpJE

They were at the absolute top of their game and had the most awesome sound and stage setup I have ever seen. I feel sorry for those who never got to see them live.

Oh, I see. Because Type O are from NY, and L'amour was in NY, and YOU'RE obviously from NY, so the rest of us can't POSSIBLY be fans of this great band, have I got it right?

Idiot.

I miss Type O like crazy. It was truly a marriage of The Beatles, Black Sabbath and shoegaze, along with many other facets such as hardcore punk. Carnivore is great, too.

I'll get this book just to have something to read about this talented dude who seemed to enjoy life sometimes, but mostly wished it was over. Heh.

My buddy helped Peter lift up a car(!) once after a TON show in New Orleans, with the help of a local fat dude ("Hey fat boy, get ova heah!") off the street and onto the sidewalk, as it was blocking the way for their tour bus :-)

One of my all time favorite bands. TON were the only ones in the world who could make you think deeply, laugh out loud, shed a tear, and kick your ass all within the same ten minute song.

I'll definitely read this book.

...Anybody remember the show 'City Limits'? I remember seeing the video for 'Black # 1' one Friday night and thinking, "What the fuck? This sucks!" Fortunately for me, a friend of mine did not, and insisted on playing 'Bloody Kisses' everytime I got in his car. Now, they're one of my favourite bands of the last 20 years, and I was lucky enough to see them @ The Warehouse in Toronto in '96. They did a killer version of 'Light My Fire', and I remember Kenny called us all suckers when the show was over, ha ha!! Still the best show I've seen to date. Peter Steele was by far one of the best frontmen in the metal (or any) scene, and he will be forever missed.

I remember the October Rust show at Harpo's in Detroit... some girl threw her panties, Peter caught them then took a big whiff and said 'Smells like poop!'.

I still miss him very much.

peter was truly one of a kind. King of self deprecation, one liners and playing the bass with one hand among a myriad of other things.

The past few years were not the same when late september rolls into october without him... for me thats the time of year type o gets pushed to the forefront.

Only the dead know brooklyn.
