ANTHRAX Guitarist: 'I Really Don't Give A S**t' About The Music Industry - Jan. 25, 2013
Brendan Crabb of Australia's Loud magazine recently conducted an interview with ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Loud: On the topic of "Worship Music", the new cover songs are being released soon, but have you started writing for another full-length record yet?

Scott: Not like, not really started writing, but there certainly are ideas. There's stuff that we never finished from "Worship Music" and some new stuff that we've been coming up with. But we haven't actually gotten in the room yet to start arranging stuff. That'll probably really start over the next few months, and then certainly after August, 'cause that's when we finish touring this year. After that we'll be really focused on writing and getting back in the studio.

Loud: How much, if at all, has the writing process changed within the band throughout the past three decades?

Scott: It hasn't changed at all. The writing process hasn't changed since "Among The Living". It's very much the same. I don't know really how it works. [laughs] Somehow magically Charlie [Benante, drums] and I come up with songs. But you know, it's not just Charlie and I, it certainly… It's always been a band. It's not just us, even though maybe sometimes the initial idea or something could be coming from Charlie or myself. But everybody's involved in arranging, coming up with melody ideas. Everybody is involved and everybody has a say. It's a very democratic process; I guess that would be the best way to put it.

Loud: You have Jon Donais [SHADOWS FALL] filling on guitar for that U.S. run and the Soundwave [festival] shows [in Australia] too. Are you still evaluating the situation with regard to a new, permanent player?

Scott: Yeah, we're not really thinking about it at all right now. Jon's filling in for Rob [Caggiano] and that's about as much as we're thinking about. We've known Jon for a long time; we've hung out with him a bunch over the years. I've actually worked with him before so, yeah, it kinda was a pretty easy decision to have him come and play with us.

Loud: Labels seem to be falling by the wayside in the current musical climate. What's your take on the future of the music industry?

Scott: I don't even know — I don't care; I have no idea. [laughs] I really don't give a shit about the industry. If anything, nothing would make me happier than… other than some of the good people who actually have jobs that would be hurting if they lost their gigs. But as far as I'm concerned, I can only hope that the whole industry collapses and has to start over, or figure out something else, because I really have nothing good to say about the record industry. When you think about the billions and billions of dollars that labels ripped off from bands from the 1940s all the way through to the 1990s, and now they complain about nobody buys records anymore. Well, whose fault is that, you know? These companies, corporations and individuals literally stole billions of dollars and you've got artists, bands who no longer exist and are literally like, a step away from being homeless, or living in assisted-living places, whatever it is. But you don't see most musicians retiring and living out the rest of their lives because they got some millions and millions of dollars' cash settlement, just to leave a record label. The whole fucking thing is insanity, the way record labels were run. Especially in the '40s, '50s, '60s and '70s when bands were really getting ripped off.

Do you know the difference between being a musician in a band and the music industry, as in record companies/labels like Roadrunner, Nuclear Blast? Apparently not otherwise you wouldn't have made such an ignorant comment. Go listen to your Lady Gaga cds you poser!

umm no..Anthrax doesnt sell records, specially not anymore. they are still "in it" cuz the 5 of them, now in there late 40s, still grind it out every night on the road in a bus. They have no choice but to tour and tour and tour. The only real money maker left in the game.

That can be said for all bands in this day & age. They are out there more times then before. Hitting the same markets at least 3 times.

That and the fact most bands(including Anthrax) write 2-3 good songs per album and the rest is filler, Scott.

At the height of CD's sales nearly all major label artists & bands made less than a dollar off each CD sold in a huge retail store. The rest went to the label, distributor & the stores. Granted being on a major brought other revenue streams along with it. Publishing, merchandise, & ticket sales. Still the execs cornered the market & profited the most.

He's linking and equating the "rip-off" of artist's from the 40's-90's with the reason why "no one" buys music anymore, when in reality they have nothing to do with each other.

If you want to tackle each issue separately, that is quite alright to do so and more people might listen. But all validity is lost when every perceived injustice is blurted out in one fell swoop, as he comes across as the guy wearing the night gown in the asylum telling all his buddies of his war stories.

Having the "whole" industry collapsing would mean the death of Anthrax and every other metal band around the globe. No industry = no live venues, no sponsors, no ticket distribution, no album sales, no online distribution, etc. etc., so he doesn't really mean what he says, or, he knows not of what he speaks.

Maybe he should go back to what he used to do. Scott Ian Rosenfeld used to go into various Sam Goody stores and buy his own records with his own credit card to boost album sales...and I'm not kidding. Contributing to the eeeeeeevil music industry himself...gasp, the horror!

You know....the whole "buying your own music to boost album sales and how it contributes to the evil music industry thing" is asinine. Seriously. If he did do that then consider he was a young guy (probably almost a kid still) and excited about his band getting famous. What young aspiring musician wouldn't be? I highly doubt that his intention was to infiltrate and sabotage the "music industry" just by buying his own music. And I'm sure he wasn't the only one who's ever done that ( if he did....). I thought I heard something about Slipknot doing that or something similar to that? Anyways....it's not like he was stinking rich and by doing that he basically was putting money from one pocket to another. Yeah dude... of course a young musician will do whatever it takes to help promote and help accelerate their own bands momentum.......gasp! the horror!!

He is stating what is happening very simply. That is true. But all bands have or will be ripped off by the labels.

Anthrax & most bands like them (metal or whatever) don't need the industry because they are touring bands that make their money on the road....and the people who happen to buy their records are the same people who go to the shows......if they gain new fans it isn't from a label, it's from older fans passing it down to their younger siblings, kids, etc.

At the risk of tooting my own horn, I've been saying the same thing for years now, especially the part about celebrating when the ship (shit) finally sinks for good, and every suit and vulture goes down with it. Music needs a good enema. Yes, there will be lots of casualties. Who cares. One thing that really irks me are these modern day cretins who believe they should be entitled to a 'career' and to make a living in metal. I hope they are downloaded and Yourtubed to death.

Most people here don't realize the truth. That when CDs came out, the price of an album doubled. The record industry said "yeah, the price will eventually come down to cassette/LP levels" but it never did.

Long story short, the record industry tried to charge twice as much for a piece of plastic that had an identical cost figure, but the consumers eventually got tired of paying $14 for an album that cost them $8 before CDs existed.

So fuck the record industry.

I still buy CDs though, bought a Stryper CD for 12€ ($16) today knowing full well it's a huge fucking ripoff, but thought I'd support them for the simple fact that they got off their ass and toured my country last year.

my thoughts exactly, just couldn't put it to print, cds suck also, because alot of us love albums for not just the price but also the artwork. Don't know how many metal cds i bought that cost of 22 bucks + plus tax with them telling me metal prices are coming down, that was just a few years ago. i only buy cds that have some kind of bonus either dvd concert stuff anything, Fuck i bought Bob Seger live bullet at walmart for $15 and it came with a t-shirt.

I reckon, but I could be wrong that CDs cost far less to produce than LPs. Whatever facts are, LPs these days are the same price as CDs and frequently even pricier. I remember that when I was a kid, LPs were for sale in supermarkets for a 6-beer pack's worth or something.

Anthrax then left Island to sign a $10 million contract with the Elektra label. Almost before the ink on the deal was dry, the band canned singer Joey Belladonna, citing "creative differences," and a year later hired singer John Bush, formerly of the heavy metal band Armored Saint.

When it comes to metal Anthrax was the first band I got into when I bought my first tape(among the living) back when I was a kid, with that said I can tell you that after stomp 442 and until worship music I think that the band struggled and the music suffered, given that the greater of two evils was the most exciting thing they put out during that period I believe that fan support is the ONLY thing that kept them alive all these years. Switching the singing duties to Bush in the 90's and then back to Joey recently were decisions to give the fans what they want, which is a recipe for success.

Nowadays, all record labels do is blaming the rise of internet of the late 90's...surely, market was oversaturated back then, with records full of fillers and copycat bands and so on, but you can't blame the artists for the greedy behavior of all those white collar businessmen who milked the cow way beyond limits.

There was a period of time, before internet, when CD's were becoming more and more relevant and vinyls were slowly disappearing...1985 to 1995 I guess...well, they kept on selling CD's DOUBLING THE PRICE of vinyls...considering that manufacturing CD's is way less expensive than vinyls, we're talking about at least TEN years when labels still sold tons of music, with less production costs doubling the price of the final product.
The industry can't blame the internet if it finally collapsed...the amount of money they made speculating on CD's prices could have surely avoided the crisis but again, we're talking about greedy white collar businessmen, instead of trying to save their employees (artists) they choose to leave the ship for greener pastures.
