HULK HOGAN: I Would Have Quit Wrestling In A Heartbeat To Join METALLICA - Jan. 25, 2013
Professional wrestling legend and reality TV star Hulk Hogan has shot down the rumor that he once auditioned for METALLICA, saying that he never heard from the band after he inquired about joining them as their new bass player.

In a January 2012 interview with The Sun, Hulk Hogan said, "I used to be a session musician before I was a wrestler. I played bass guitar. I was big pals with Lars Ulrich and he asked me if I wanted to play bass with METALLICA in their early days but it didn't work out."

Three months later, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich was asked during an appearance on "The Howard Stern Show" if there was any truth to Hogan's claim. "You know what?! I'm blessed or cursed, depending on how you look at it, with having more or less a photographic memory for pretty much anything that I've been a part of," Lars replied. "That one, when that showed up two or three months ago, I was scratching my head over that one. Unless he went by… I don't know Hulk Hogan, I don't know enough about him… I'm not a huge wrestling [fan]… Unless he went by, like, his Christian name or something, and I don't know if anybody knows what his Christian name was — Dave Smith or something — if there was a whole thing that we had with him under a different name, but I certainly have no recollection of doing anything with quote Hulk Hogan endquote. That one, I was scratching my

In a brand new interview with U.K.'s Kerrang! magazine (see video below), Hulk was once again asked about the rumor that Lars once asked him if he wanted to join METALLICA as the band's bass player. He replied: "That rumor has been turned and twisted and thrown in so many different directions — that I auditioned and that I lied and that I never auditioned and they weren't interested. The truth is I played music for many years before I ever got into wrestling, and when I heard METALLICA was looking for a bass player, I would have quit wrestling like that [snaps fingers] to get into METALLICA … When I heard they were looking for a bass player, I got my tapes together from the old band, got a couple of tapes together that Simon Cowell produced with me — GREEN JELLY, and I did an old Gary Glitter song, 'Leader Of The Gang', with Simon, back in the day, before he got his break with all the wrestling music and became a huge monster. But I got all that stuff together to send it to METALLICA and never heard a word. So they never responded to me. They either thought I was a joke or they thought it was a joke, and it wasn't me, or I was no good, but I never heard back from them … I tried — but I never did audition for METALLICA. I wish I would have. But the bass player they got was so good. My God!"

METALLICA changed bass players twice in their recording history: first in 1986 when Cliff Burton died and was replaced by Jason Newsted, then in 2001 when Newsted quit and Robert Trujillo took over two years later.

Hogan took up the bass when he was younger and played high schools and frat parties in various bands.

Ron McGovney was the first bass player. Ron appeared on an 1982 demo. You can find clips of it on youtube.

"METALLICA changed bass players twice in their recording history: first in 1986 when Cliff Burton died and was replaced by Jason Newsted, then in 2001 when Newsted quit and Robert Trujillo took over two years later".

You skipped over key words: RECORDING HISTORY.

Demos do not count towards RECORDING HISTORY. Yes, they RECORDED a demo, but the term is used in reference to released albums. Ron was not on Kill 'Em All, the first official release by Metallica.

Well, ya know Mean Gene, this sounds a little bit fishy to me, brother. Since the 24 inch pythons had made there way around the country and Hulk Hogan was already a household name before ... Hulkamania had already ran wild, brother, before Metallica would've been anywhere near being in the same league of celebrity. This is the phoniest crap I've heard in awhile. Hogan had already been a draw at Madison Square Garden (not as the star attraction he would become, but as a top villain). It just doesn't add up to me. Just another tired attention grab.

To be honest, I never really bought the whole Hulk Hogan/Metallica rumors, and even if there was any truth to them, I doubt he wouldn't have lasted long, because this is the same band who fired Dave Mustaine for being a raging alcoholic, despite the band's own nickname being "Alcoholica". Like many Rasslin' stars since "Superstar" Billy Graham (who I refer to as the Jose Canseco of Rasslin'), Hulk Hogan is a known steroid user (and his own steroid use nearly led to WWE being bankrupt, and nearly led Vince McMahon to Federal prison). If they couldn't tolerate Dave's substance abuse habits, or the consequences of such habits, then how the hell would they tolerate a Hulkamaniac 'Roid Rage?

And the question I always had about the Hogan rumors with Metallica is, do these rumors refer to the replacing Cliff, or replacing Jason? If they refer to replacing Cliff, then I doubt them even more, because in 1986, Hogan was the undisputed face of WWE (and quite possibly the Rasslin' business as a whole), and for WWE to just let Hogan drop the belt and let him walk away just to be a long-term bassist for Metallica would have been suicide on WWE's part (especially at a time when he was the very focal point of the company's ambitions to expand their promotion nationwide). I'm sure Vince would've strengthened his contract.

You know, I wish I could get my parents a full refund for all that Hulk Hogan merchandise they bought me when I was a young Hulkamaniac in the late 80s/early 90s. I trained, I said my prayers, and I took my vitamins, just like Hulk told me to, and that didn't do jack shit for me! I always wondered why wasn't I all buff like Hulk Hogan was. Turns out that Terry Bollea was a lying sack of shit from the very start, and those 24-inch pythons were actually the result of pumping himself full of 'roids! Sorry Mr. Bollea, but shrinking my balls, damaging my long-term fertility (as well as my overall health), and subjecting myself to "roid rages" are not prices I am willing to pay for that muscular physique! I still refuse to believe for one second that you would have opened every Metallica set by ripping your GIMMICKED shirt onstage before strapping on your bass, and "hulking up" prior to the last 5 songs! And how do we know that Mr. Bollea didn't commit perjury when he testified in McMahon's steroid trial? We KNOW his testimony decided whether or not Vinnie Mac went to Federal Prison (which obviously he DIDN'T)!

I wanted to get my money back for every copy I had of Metallica's material from the Black Album up to St. Anger, but Lars threatened to sue me for DRM violations (he does own the rights to his own recordings, after all)...
