DINO CAZARES: FEAR FACTORY Sound 'Became A Staple In Metal Music' - Jan. 27, 2013
Anthony Morgan of Metal Forces recently conducted an interview with FEAR FACTORY/DIVINE HERESY guitarist Dino Cazares. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

On the music video for title track "The Industrialist", taken from the band's latest album:

Dino: "It's pretty much the story of The Industrialist, which is an automaton who becomes sentient. He realises that he isn't human, and so he seeks his creator to try to gain more life. The concept was a collaboration between Burton [C. Bell, vocals] and I. The music video was basically shot… We used live footage from Belgium, a festival called Graspop. One of our really good friends named James Zahn is kind of a computer geek who does a lot of stuff with computer technology. [laughs] He does a lot of CGI graphics, and he was able to add a lot of footage from different factories and things like that, things that go along with what we're about. He kind of put them together, and made a video out of it."

On recording 1992 debut album "Soul Of A New Machine":

Dino: "I remember right when we first recorded the record, there was the Rodney King riots. Colin Richardson was from England. He flew from England, and he was really scared to actually land in L.A. because L.A. was pretty much in lockdown because of the riots. People pretty much destroyed the whole city, just about looting and lighting fires. There was pretty much a riot on at that time in L.A. I just remember that our producer almost didn't wanna come to L.A. because he was scared. [laughs] We managed to make it work, and there was actually a strict curfew at night. Everybody had to be home by 10 p.m. — you couldn't be on the streets at 10 p.m. When we recorded the record, we had to make sure that we only recorded during the day. We couldn't even go into the studio late at night, because there were still national guards on the street.

"That was our beginnings, and pretty much the base of FEAR FACTORY. You definitely heard a lot of our influences on that record, everything from GODFLESH to NAPALM DEATH to industrial music. It was definitely just an introduction to who we were. It wasn't until 'Demanufacture' [1995] — our second album — that we redefined our sound, and that became who we are. Production-wise, it was definitely thick, and it was a very futuristic-sounding album. There was nothing else out there that was like it. Also, there were a lot of elements in there that we were able to redefine and make better. We had more of a mechanical FEAR FACTORY, with a guitar-based, drum-syncopated sound. Burton also redefined his vocals; there were definitely more melodic vocals, and heavier vocals. It became our staple; it became a staple in metal music."

On the departure of bassist Byron Stroud [3 INCHES OF BLOOD, ex-STRAPPING YOUNG LAD]:

Dino: "Byron just said that he didn't wanna be in the band anymore, and I said 'Okay'. I didn't have a problem with it. You'll have to ask him why he left though, because I don't know. I really don't know. "

On the future of DIVINE HERESY:

Dino: "I'm hoping at some point to do another record, but FEAR FACTORY pretty much keeps me occupied 24/7. I'm not sure who's gonna be in the band right now [laughs]. A lot of things are going on. [laughs] I'm not sure who's gonna be doing it right now, because the other guys have other projects and are all doing other stuff. I haven't really decided who I'm gonna have play on the record yet but I'm sure Travis [Neal, vocals] will be doing the next record, yeah."

Daaamn. The camera guy had to stand back 50ft in order to take that pic and still couldn't get his entire body captured in the photo, even with the wide angle lens!

sounds pretty good as a story--

might as well animate your own 3d movie to go with it--that is animated in a unique style--handmade

this will survive in the internet feeding on other viral bodies--eventually achieving consciousness on the other side

Interesting behind the scenes info on the Soul of a New Machine recordings. I forget sometimes it was that long ago. The L.A. Riots...man I feel old.

It's not a bad interview at all, but of course the focus of comments is Dino being fat. As for the headline statement (taken out of context):
SPEAKING ON DEMANUFACTURE: "Production-wise, it was definitely thick, and it was a very futuristic-sounding album.
I'm not sure how much I agree with it, but it's not exactly swimming in arrogance and they've clearly influenced a lot of fucking bands since.

FF...mmmm....not sure what to think of them anymore....ok soul of a new machine sounds like napalm to godflesh....then demanufacture came in, was getting its own style and respect and the album kicked...obsolete got in with another perspective but kept the respect of FF's unique style even if dino was getting a bit obsobese....then a pile of vomit came with digibullshit...then FF calls it quit.........then miraculously Christian picked up the guitar and they pulled off a sick comeback Archetype album which was very impressive considering Dino was not around....then a pile of shit came back with transgression which was 30% ok and 70% crap.....then Big Return of Dino and lets get rid of ray and christian to look like were the shit with Byron and Hoglan and pull off a bad ass record mechanised....then lets just be burton and dino so we can have all the attention and pull a plastic metal record the industrialist and not sound good live....ya thats where FF is right now...sinking....next album should be called "shutdown"

Musically Fear Factory stirred a minor revolution when 'Demanufacture' came out but the production of this album kind of shook the whole foundation when it got released. Everyone wanted to get those syncopated bass drum patterns and that fat guitar sound. I think Fear Factory and Pantera redefined Metal production in such a way that it's a rarity now to hear bands using real drums sounds, not using looping, severe editing, re-amping or sound replacement. It brought a lot of good and a LOT of bad to heavy music.

Anybody in 1984 listening to the major bands of 2013 would think thay all went 'industrial' because of their productions.

Some interesting quotes from interview:

"The majority of the Mechanize had been written by me and Burton. We had a couple of other musicians in the band who contributed a little bit to the writing process, but a good portion of it was written by me and Burton."

Contributed little bit?? what a fucking bullshit! So, judging by his words Burton contributed more than Gene Hoglan lol. Since when Burt writing music in FF ? So he wrote all those drums\rhythms on Mechanize? Burton is just a singer\lyricist, he probably didn't write even 5% from all FF music. Shut the fuck up Dino, show some respect to Gene - give him deserved credits because he is the only reason why Mechanize didn't suck balls!
----------------------------
"On our last record Mechanize, the bass player (Byron Stroud) couldn’t play the parts. He just couldn’t pick that fast, so I did it."

lol Byron couldn’t play Dino parts?? what lame excuse! Just a lazy way out of paying Byron.
---------------------------
"Byron never explained why he wished to leave Fear Factory, the axeman reckons. He was never really an official member of the band. NOBODY is an official member of the band EXCEPT Burt and I."

yeah, we heard this tirades many times - "Burton and I is only, always and forever will be a FF, everyone else is insignificance....blah "
--------------------------
"At first I didn’t want to play any of the songs that I wasn’t on. There was then a point where I was like ‘We should do a song or two.’ Then Burton said ‘No, we’re not doing any’. I don’t really like those records"

Funny thing that Burton many times claims in interviews that he would like to play live some of the songs from Archetype but Dino strongly refuses.

-------------------------
"No-one really requests that material, so it doesn’t really matter actually."

And that "no one" is you Dino. Archetype is ten times better than "In.douche.trialist" - it's a fact!

Oh and Byron actually said why he leave FF:

"When asked what the reason was for his recent departure from FEAR FACTORY, Byron said, "It was just time to leave, man. The way I put it to everybody is that life's too short to spend it with people that DON'T love and respect you."

NO - This is BS. FF's sound was a FAD from ~1996-2003. No one still sounds like FF except FF because they haven't realized the FAD ended 10 years ago.

Hey Dino, if you read these boards, maybe it's time to do something. Juice fast, weight watchers, I dunno.

Not being cruel, just realistic. You're in your 40's now. It's going to catch up.

and the use of triggers spun out of control after this album blew up. Still, the appeal of sterile productions is perfectly in line with the rest of society; i believe aesthetic preferences mirror social developments. The move towards mechanical perfection is everywhere in our society, from architecture to food etc.

Fear Factory's music may have initially been commenting on the problem, but now they are just part of the machine - literally!

I really miss the days when Euro metal offered a viable alternative but most Euro metal is sterile as fuck nowadays too.

Before Soul of a New Machine I can't name one band that used haunting melodic vocals mixed with death metal growls (bands were either one or the other) and Demanufacture expanded even more on that. After those two cd's it was a staple in metal music to be able to scream and sing.

I love it when people get butthurt about triggers. Do you get equally butthurt with electric pickups on guitars? What about distortion pedals?

Go soak your head. Triggers... hahahahaha
