VOIVOD: 'Target Earth' First-Week Sales Revealed - Jan. 30, 2013
"Target Earth", the new album from Canadian metal innovators VOIVOD, sold around 1,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD was issued on January 22 via the band's own company, Iron Gang Factory, and Century Media.

VOIVOD's previous album, "Infini", opened with around 840 units back in July 2009.

"Target Earth" was recorded in early 2012 at Pierre Rémillard's (OBLIVEON, CRYPTOPSY, KRISIUN, MISERY INDEX) Wild Studio in a small town called St-Zénon in Quebec, Canada and was mixed by Sanford Parker (PELICAN, NACHTMYSTIUM). The follow-up to 2009's "Infini" contains the band's first music to be written with guitarist Dan Mongrain (MARTYR) following the passing of original axeman Denis "Piggy" D'Amour in 2005. The original art was once again drawn by drummer Michel "Away" Langevin and features color schemes from each one of the band's previous albums.

"Target Earth" standard CD and digital download track listing:

01. Target Earth
02. Kluskap O'Kom
03. Empathy For The Enemy
04. Mechanical Mind
05. Warchaic
06. Resistance
07. Kaleidos
08. Corps Étranger
09. Artefact
10. Defiance

"Target Earth" was also made available in the same track listing as gatefold-2LP with 180-gram vinyl in the following versions/colors:

* Black (Unlimited)
* Transparent Red (200 copies, Century Media webshop Europe)
* Transparent Blue (200 copies, Nuclear Blast mailorder)
* Orange (400 copies, Century Media USA)
* Purple (6000 copies, Century Media USA)

Additionally, there is a limited-edition deluxe pressing of "Target Earth" as a mediabook-CD with alternate frontcover (silver on black), two quality stickers, expanded booklet as well as the two live bonus tracks recorded at the band's triumphant appearance at Roadburn festival 2012, which VOIVOD helped curate: "Target Earth" and "Man In The Trees".

And last but certainly not least, "Target Earth" was released as a CM Distro exclusive mailorder boxset in a numbered limited worldwide edition of 1,000 copies with the following content:

* "Target Earth" mediabook CD (incl. two live bonus tracks and expanded artwork/alternate frontcover)
* "Live At Roadburn 2011" CD (exclusive 10-song live CD with a four-page booklet in jewel case; previously only released by Roadburn Records as limited LP version)
* VOIVOD belt
* 1 poster (DINA3, Design of the mediabook CD cover artwork)
* 2 stickers (included in the mediabook CD)
* 3 exclusive postcards with artwork by VOIVOD's Away

Why keeping those sales reports, especially after a week of release? They are rarely indicative of the band's success, especially in underground metal. I for one am a great Voivod fan and didn't manage to get a copy already.

Those numbers would mean something a year from now, as a recap of the sales.

AMAZING record. Calls back to a bunch of their older releases but manages to sound fresh and modern at the same time. Mongrain fits like a glove.

This is how 80s metal bands should be releasing music 30 years into their career.

I wish Blabbermouth and other sites wouldn't keep talking about the first week of sales of new releases in the USA. What does this really mean?

1. Does this include Amazon and online sales? I received an email from amazon on the new hot sellers in hard rock and metal, and Voivod was in the top 3 releases!! They were above Led Zeppelin and more famous bands last week. So I don't get it. Where do these figures come from? Are they just physical cd/vinyl sales that are scanned in stores?

2. The figures never talk about worldwide sales. That is the only true measure. Who cares about just the USA in a worldwide global metal community? 1500 copies in the USA could actually be 8000 copies worldwide....who the fuck knows? Voivod are huge in Europe, Canada, South America and other places.

No one who releases these numbers ever say what they really mean. Voivod could go on to sell 80,000 copies and yet the media keeps talking about 1500 sales in the first week.

This album would be a chart topping sucess. This is the best album I have heard in years. This may turn out to be my favorite Voivod album yet....maybe not but its up there. Nothingface is just downright genius, we wouldnt have this if that didnt exist.

...you are correct, these figures are only for physical retail sales in the United States as reported through Soundscan. That's how the Billboard chart is compiled these days so yes, online and international sales aren't taken into account, thus skewing the numbers-- and the charts-- incorrectly. It's stupid system for sure!

With all the cd/record stores closing the last several years, I wouldn't doubt if Amazon is the number one store for physical cds in the world. If their sales are not accounted for in the charts, then everything is way off. I wouldn't doubt for every cd sold in a store, Amazon sells 10 to 50 times that amount! I don't know anyone who buys more cds in stores than amazon. I think I buy under 5 per year in stores, and over 50 online.

Are there any music stores anymore? The big Sam Goody closed and was demolished here, the others closed long ago. All the FYE are gone as far as I know (way overpriced anyway). even if there was a store to go to or Best Buy/Walmart/Target they will not have this or anything I want all they carry are auto-tune artists these days. I basically order everything on Amazon but I usually choose the third party sellers. The industry got way too greedy and brought this upon themselves.

True. In Canada, Best Buy stopped selling cds basically this year. There are only the HMV stores in malls, which have a decent metal selection. All the other good cd stores closed. There was Top Forty, Sam the Record Man, CDPlus, A and M, an many more. It's horrible. I remember years ago even Sears had a big music section. All that is gone. Wal mart has a few releases now and then worth grabbing. Surprisingly they have lots of metal and underground cds. I remember back in the days when there were huge music stores, with massive displays, and massive metal sections. There were even store people working that section that could help you find good stuff. Thank god for HMV, because without them, there would be no place to browse a good selection of music in Canada! Amazon is still the most convenient, and best priced (most of the time).

Around these parts everything had to be special ordered at the FYE. I stopped buying shit from them because the employees were idiots who didnt care to get things right. why fuck around with that when you can purchase it through ITunes without hassle.

What are you guys talking about? Soundscan counts all sales in the US, physical, digital, online, whatever. Voivod (and many other metal bands) just don't sell that much.

At one time, in a mall near me near Baltimore, MD., in the suburbs, we had 4 or 5 Record Stores, incl. Sam Goody, 2 The Wall stores, Tape World (dating myself w/ that one, 1990) and one other, that I forget the name.

5 Record Stores in 1 modestly sized Shopping Mall. Of course they all have left after like 2000. Maybe it's the digital sources that are killing the market, IDk, but around here, Best Buy is the only real choice, aside for 1 or 2 local roots Record Stores in the area, within' a 30 mile radius. It's still worth it to travel, once in a while, just becuase, with Metal making a modest comeback recently, it's cool to go shopping at a store, like they're dinosaurs or something, LoL.

I have the Voivod ordered from Amazon. Hope it's great like you guys said. I heard the one preview track and it ruled.

My fave voivod albums are:

The outer Limits (with the 3D glasses and cover artwork)
Angel Rat
Nothingface
Dimension Hatross
and the self titled reunion record with Newsted. The last two minus Piggy in the studio were kind of mediocre unfortunately. This one should be much better from what I can tell.

...even at the few remaining basement stores that sell underground and obscure and alt stuff so I guess it's gonna be Amazon or Century Media direct. I soo want to patronize brick n mortar stores and support the local guy but metal these days has become double-secret underground. It's prolly better off that way.

Instead of buying from Amazon or Century Media, buy directly from Voivod's OWN store...buy from Voivod themselves and put the $ in THEIR pockets. Support THE band.
