JOHN CORABI Is 'Done' Trying To Reach Out To His Former Bandmates In MÖTLEY CRÜE - Jan. 31, 2013
Don de Leaumont of The Great Southern Brainfart recently conducted an interview with John Corabi, former lead singer of MÖTLEY CRÜE, THE SCREAM and UNION. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Great Southern Brainfart: Your fans have been waiting a long time for your debut solo album. Did you feel like it was a risky move making your first solo album an acoustic album?

Corabi: I know it's a bit of a risk after all these years of me talking about doing a solo record and the first one out is an acoustic record. I just wanted to do something different. I don't like doing what people would expect of me. I just really wanted to expand my horizons and think outside of the box. I want to show people that I'm not just that guy who can get out there and scream "Hooligan's Holiday" and "Smoke The Sky". I'm a songwriter and I'm more than just a screamer. My fans have been very supportive of me for 25 years but maybe I'll pick up some new fans that necessarily wouldn't be apt to buy a MÖTLEY CRÜE record, a UNION record, or even a SCREAM record.

The Great Southern Brainfart: It's really cool to hear you doing some of these SCREAM, CRÜE, and even UNION songs in this stripped down environment. It almost gives them all a new life of sorts.

Corabi: Right. When I started doing the acoustic shows, people would be yelling for "Hooligan's Holiday" and "Smoke The Sky" and I had no idea of how to pull them off. I got together with my bassist Topher and we worked out an arrangement for "Hooligan's Holiday" and it just morphed into what you hear on the record. It took a bit. It took some time to figure it out and it works. I love this new version of it.

The Great Southern Brainfart: Back in 1994, it was huge news when you were picked to replace Vince Neil in MÖTLEY CRÜE. Looking back on it, did you have a feeling you were walking into something that could potentially backfire on you?

Corabi: Well, I don't know how you can't not feel like it could blow up in your face. [laughs]

The Great Southern Brainfart: Were you a fan of MÖTLEY CRÜE at all before joining them?

Corabi: I knew a few of their songs like the ones that I'd heard on MTV or the radio. Honestly, I can't say that I was fan. I went in there not knowing if it was going to work or not. I will say that by the end of the first week that I was with them we pretty much had "Hammered" and "Misunderstood" written. The writing sessions and the demo sessions for that record were pretty unreal.

The Great Southern Brainfart: You were in MÖTLEY CRÜE for five years. When the split between you and the band came up, was it a surprise to you or did you really see it coming?

Corabi: Well, here's the deal. Vince Neil said in his book that it was my idea to leave MÖTLEY CRÜE. Just to set the record straight, Vince is only partially right about that. I just told the guys that I was so tired hearing about "Vince would do it this way…" I just told them, "I'm so fucking sick and tired of hearing about what Vince would do from you and your management." I was just sick of the guys comparing me to the guy that you told me for the last five years to not be. If you get hire for a job and your boss keeps talking about what great job the other guy did or compares you to the other guy, at some point, you just say, "Fuck you. Go back to that person then." I told them that if they wanted Vince and Vince was the fucking answer, maybe they should call him back and work shit out. If not, we should all just shut the fuck up and try and make this work.

The Great Southern Brainfart: It's too bad that they chose the later of your options.

Corabi: Man, I'll tell you what. I don't give a shit about the money. I couldn't give a fuck less. I'll always figure out how to make a fucking living. [laughs] Their money didn't mean anything to me when I joined the band and it didn't mean anything to me when I left the band. To me, everything was about what you say. I don't care if the deal is for $0.10 or for $10,000,000, a deal is still a deal. I hung out with those guys every day for five years and I haven't seen them more than five times in the last 15 years. That bothered me more than anything. I thought those guys were my friends and that's what I miss more than anything. I was more bummed out over the loss of our brotherhood than anything. Those guys are just the kind of people that will embrace you when you're in their circle. They've had some many buzzards and vultures picking at their bones for the last 25 years that when they look down and they see me calling them, I bet they immediately think, "What does he want?"

The Great Southern Brainfart: That's really sad, dude. Then it makes you feel like they never really knew you.

Corabi: Yeah. A good example is this. My son's band just recently got a record deal and the drums that he played on his album and in his bands video was the drum set that Tommy [Lee] gave him when my kid was like 12 years old. He's become friends with a bunch of guys like Brian Tichy, Eric Singer, Morgan Rose and Tommy Lee through me, so when he did his video, he was so proud of it and he wrote to all those guys and sent them the video. He wrote more of a person message to Tommy showing him that it was his old kit and thanked him for inspiring him. Every one of those guys responded to him but Tommy. At that point I just said, "I'm done." I'm not reaching out to those guys anymore. It takes me a little longer to figure things out than most but I figured that there really is no friendship there.

Don't presume to speak for the rest of us. I had "Let it Scream" well before Corabi tried to make Crue a better band. There are a lot of music fans who would know who Corabi was if he'd only done that one album with The Scream. You're right that there are a lot of casual music fans who would never have known about him, but I bet he couldn't care less about that.

He was in Motley Crue? ;-) I also actually knew him as the singer in The Scream before MC! And being from Montreal, Sass Jordan's "Make you a believer" video was in heavy rotation back in 92 and he's in it ! :-)

Corabi completely played himself trying to reach out to the MC guys over the years, thinking that they were still "friends." They saw him as just an employee all along.

He's like an ex-boyfriend still trying to "stay friends" with an ex-gf, while the girl has long since moved on and hooked up with someone else. Poor fool.

My point Exactly Nefty. at least Jason Newstead seems to have put Metallica in his past, Corabi just seems biiter. Like a bad breakup 15 years ago.

Great interview by John. Wish him & his son all the very best going forward. Also that 1994 MC album Corabi did, will forever be Motley's finest release!

It sucks that the MC guys kind of forgot about him when he was booted. I'm also surprised Tommy lee cold shouldered his son like that. I've always thought out of all the guys in MC Tommy lee always seemed like the most down to earth and the friendliest out all of them. I guess I was wrong.

Cool honest guy. He was royally fucked, but in reality, they shouldn't have called the band motley crue with John, and they admit that numerous times. They were dirty with him when they kicked him out, just like they were dirty with Vince back then. Business always overtakes frienships and brotherhood when millions are at stake.

I would walk right past him on the street and not recognize him. Damn he looks older and different.

Did anybody read the entire interview where he mentioned he has no interest in joining Velvet Revolver?

You have to respect him for having integrity like that and not chasing what could be easy money with VR.

His record with Crue was their best record aside from Shout At The Devil... and that's even debatable. So just knowing that should bring him some kind of comfort even if his old band are a bunch of massive bell ends.

I agree - that disc is the best thing MC did next to Shout (certainly debatable). 'Let It Scream' is an excellent album as well. Maybe the lyrics in 'Man In The Moon' were a bit of foreshadowing for his experience w/ the Crue.

I realize the record may have been great but the reality is the average music fan, as well as most Crue fans, never heard of this guy. I'm not saying these are intelligent people, they simply make up the masses.

A few weeks ago he did an interview saying that when he was fired his girl left him the very same day. He dumped one girl when he joined MC for a hotter one, so I don't care about his sob story.

it's not like they stopped hanging when vince rejoined and he's still clinging to the past. he & nikki formed brides of destruction well after his time in crue, and corabi's all over that record. mick has in the past and continues to speak favorably of him, he's even cool with vince and they've done shows together, so he's certainly had reason to still consider them friends even though their business relationship didn't work out for a variety of reasons.

that said, the corabi crue album might not sound like a "motley crue" album to some, which is understandable...but it is a monster of an album and by far the heaviest, most musical thing they've ever recorded. and corabi is a class act and about the most easily approachable nice guy you can meet in the industry. the acoutsic stuff is cool, but i for one would love to hear him fronting a kickass heavy rock band again.

Sums of Tom Lee for sure. He's pathetic for not replying to John's son, especially under these circumstances.

The others responded and there's a reason why. Eric Singer is a responsible member of a corp rock band. Brian Tichy has to be on point when working for different bands. Morgan Rose, I don't know much about but obviously has class.

John Corabi is a great singer and songwriter, and a pretty good guitarplayer as well.

The 'Union'-stuff he did with Bruce Kulick is some of the very finest of melodic hard rock out there.

As far as Motley Crüe-music goes, (i.m.o.) the only CD worth listening to is the one they did with Corabi.
If there's an inch of musical spirit in those guys, they'll soon ditch that worthless piece-of-crap Vince Neil, get Corabi on board (if he's still willing) and make some GOOD rock music again.

J.C. when he says he misses the friendships. He's no fool. It was just like when Cherone joined Van Halen, one day at a time.Had the cd done better,it would be a different story. As much as I like the cd, there isn't a break out hit on it which sealed its doom.A man's hard rock album.M.Crue didn't even attempt to make an album like AC/DC or Van Halen when they lost their singers. Completely different style. JC never had a chance. But his association did help him continue to record and tour around the world. All he wants is to get a shout out from the Crue. Not too hard to understand.

Hey John, the album that you did with the Crue is far greater musically than any record Crue has ever done. And this comes from a early Crue-era fan. After the 1994 album, it was all crap..and you have far more class as a person or musician than Vince and Tommy.

The fans of John know that he's not just some Smoke the Sky screamer, but MOST fans never seen that tune live. I'd shit my pants if they played it. There is very little usage of really heavy vocals on union and other projects. Sorry I just really think John sounds tits when hes getting heavy man. Don't get me wrong, I like it all man.
I got my unplugged in the mail and I love it.

Fuck those asswipes anyway John. Release them demos!

Saying John Corabi was in Motley Crue is like saying Dave Mustaine was in Metallica. It was short lived and today, nobody cares.
