BLACK SABBATH To Begin Mixing New Album In February - Jan. 31, 2013
Eddie Trunk — co-host of the VH1 Classic television program "That Metal Show" who has a long-running radio show, "Friday Night Rocks", on New York's Q104.3 FM — conducted an interview with BLACK SABBATH bassist Geezer Butler for Hartke at this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, a massive music-products convention that took place January 24-27 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below. A few excerpts from the chat follow.

On the new BLACK SABBATH album:

Geezer: "We've finished recording it. Tony's [Iommi, guitar] back in England putting down a couple of solos. Then we start mixing it in February and it will be out in June.

"The provisional title is '13' — unless we can come up with something more constructive."

On Tony Iommi's health after he was diagnosed with cancer more than a year ago:

Geezer: "He's doing well; he's really responding well. He has to go and have his medication every six weeks. But yeah, he's really coming along well; he's really doing well."

On BLACK SABBATH's touring plans:

Geezer: "We start at the end of April in New Zealand, then we go to Australia, then Japan. June, we'll be promoting the album, then July and August [is] USA. Then October is South America and Europe in November and December."

On how it feels to be back working with Ozzy Osbourne again:

Geezer: "It's great. We just have a lot of laughs and lot of fun."

On whether he has contributed lyrics to the new BLACK SABBATH album, like he has in the past:

Geezer: "Yeah, I've written most of the lyrics. Ozzy comes up with the titles and then gives me an inspiration to write the lyrics. I think we've got 16 songs and I've written 14 sets of lyrics."

On whether Brad Wilk (RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE), who plays on the new BLACK SABBATH album, or Tommy Clufetos (OZZY OSBOURNE, ROB ZOMBIE), who played shows with the band last year, will sit behind the kit when BLACK SABBATH hits the road:

Geezer: "We're not sure yet; we don't know. 'Cause I think Brad's got commitments with RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. So it'll probably be either Tommy or Brad, depending on their commitments."

On his plans to release another solo album:

Geezer: "When I finish this cycle for the SABBATH touring and album and everything else, we'll start work on the next GZR album. There's a lot of material written. It's just getting the time to record it. It'll probably be sometime next year."

Coming up with titles before the lyrics? That's unconventional to say the least.

I imagine it will, of course, sound like "The Devil You Know". A solid Doom/Heavy Metal album, to be sure. But that's not the real Black Sabbath. Who needs Another Doom Metal Band? I need the under-produced guitar, club-footed drumming, and prophet in the woods vocals that made Volume 4. That chemistry doesn't exist anymore.

Have you heard the band talk about the sound ? it's going back to the blues/jazz influences again. I don't think it's gonna sound like The Devil You Know at all

sure people name instrumentals and sometimes the name stays, but people rarely write lyrics around a title.

What happened to the Lakland basses Geez was thumpin' on the past several tours?

I've seen Geez with Sabbath about a dozen times and I was fortunate to see GZR on their first two tours. I even caught a pick at each show.

Eddie has been pretty vocal about the absence of Bill Ward. Mr. Trunk must've gotten the gag order for this interview. I wonder if the 'No Bill questions' will be a prerequisite for all press interviews going forward. A real shame that Geezer stopped responding to Bill's emails back when he was on board...

The fuck it isn't. It's not the early 70's. Vol. 4 is a monster - no question. But the Black Sabbath of 2013 ain't gonna make another Vol. 4. Your choices are embrace the now - or weep over your 70's records.

what the f is going on with That Metal Show we usually at least hear about new episodes being taped but nothing yet. Getting tired of the reruns (even though some are kind of ironically funny now). Hopefully they are not waiting for the new Sabbath. Just hope they don't up and cancel without warning like they did Headbanger's Ball even though they rerun it enough. Just had to vent thanks

Can't wait for the album but 13 is a shit title. Name it after the year? Why not name it 'June' then, seeing it'll be out in June. Why not go back an rename the Paranoid album 70? Come on Geezer, get rid of that shit title and do better!

I'm a huge Sabbath fan (including everything up to Seventh Star!)... but lets face it, the chemistry of the 70s classic era is gone, Ozzy cannot sing a fucking note, "Vibe Merchant" Rick Rubin is producing and this is the very definition of a cash grab - This album will suck - It will be soulless and by the numbers.

Yeah you'll try to like it upon release in anticipation of the tour, you'll listen to it to familiarize yourself with the material, you'll say its good... But will it compare favourably with anything they released in the 1970-'81 classic era? NO. You'll never listen to it again after 2013, thats how "good" this most anticpated record in 30 years will be.

I'm happy with the Sabbath records i have , i don't need another one...

Geezer will have an easy time with the lyrics then.

1)Never Gonna Stop Rocking
2)I Don't Wanna Stop Rocking
3)Physically Incapable Of Stopping Rocking
4)You Want Me to Quit Rocking? Never!!!
5)Sharon Made Me Title One Song With the Words"I,Love and You" In It
6)Here It Is...I Love You All
7)Still Rocking.....In My Rocking Chair
8)Ouch.....My Hair and Eyebrows Are On Fire
9)I Love You All(So I Will Continue Rocking)

When a band like Sabbath puts out a new album they will play 2, 3, or 4 songs off the album and the rest will be stuff they have been playing, the only reason to go is it might be the last time to see them but I have a feeling they will work things out with Bill Ward to do that last final tour which wouldn't include any songs off 13 (or whatever they decide to call it)

Black Sabbath is the greatest metal band of all time and I can't wait to hear the new shit. Could be epic with Geezer on lyrics.

But it's going to be pretty fucking tough to top TDYK. Probably not gonna happen.

I think we know what to expect already based on the 3 songs that were released in 99'.

It is gonna sound like sabbath and a solo-ozzy collaboration. See the old songs were great because Ozzy didn't really take a front seat and Geez was coming up with the vocal melody (the most important thing). I sure Ozzy added to it or came up with his own stuff on some songs. But now, no one is going to tell Ozzy what to do and that's usually going to make it sound like a solo ozzy effort. (I mean the vocal style).

My guess is that they'll try to sound contemporary rather than try to recreate the early 70s feel with a modern twist.

My prediction is that it may not totally sound like sabbath at all. Sabbath has 3-4 sounds all based on the singer.

DIO is the most powerful, versatile God who can put even the mightiest vocalists (Dickinson, Halford) to shame.

Even though he is gone, I still use present tense because 99% of all metal vocalists are simply not even in the same room with DIO.
