MEGADETH Bassist Says New Album Really Takes Him Back To Origins Of Band's Sound - Feb. 3, 2013
Eric Blair of "The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show" conducted an interview with MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson at this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, a massive music-products convention that took place January 24-27 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. You can now watch the chat below.

On the recording sessions for MEGADETH's new studio album:

Ellefson: "It's really coming well. In fact, right before I cam here, I was just down [in the studio] playing some bass. We have ten tracks done as of now, at least the bass and drum tracks, and you can really hear the songs coming together now at this point. And boy, there's some great stuff. I mean, it really takes me back to some of the real origins of the MEGADETH sound from back in the very beginning, which I'm thrilled about."

"It's too early to [talk about individual songs], unfortunately, But all I can say is there's a pretty wide range [of music], as I think our best MEGADETH records have — we've got a very wide span of our musical history. But we are our best when we just get in a room and just start crushing and throwing it down, and that's where we're at right now. 'Cause when you go in the studio, you go, 'I've got this idea,' 'I've got this idea,' you kind of throw them out, and sometimes it's a process of elimination. And all of sudden, you find in the middle there's the heart and soul of it. And that's really where we're at right now. And I tell you, these last few days I've been playing bass on it, and it's a workout and it's just freakin' ripping. I hope my passion tells you the story. Yeah, I am excited; it's great."

On how MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine being a born-again Christian has changed MEGADETH's life on the road:

Ellefson: "I think it's been great. I mean, look, our story is out there. We've been a very open book about our lives, about the history of the band. I think it's the thing our fans appreciate about us — whether you like it or not, we speak it. And so to be open about that with our lives, 'cause our personal lives really are our professional lives by and large. Because being in MEGADETH, it's who we are — it's not just a band, it's who we are as people. For Dave, obviously, that was a great conversion for him and a great thing for his life. And I've done kind of a similar thing myself years ago. By the time I was 25, the drugs and the booze kicked me, and I was done. But the funny thing is that was right before we recorded 'Rust In Peace', and then from then on, I've had the best years of my bass-playing career and certainly of the MEGADETH career. So, for me, keeping my nose clean — for the real desire and not because I have to and not white-knuckling it, 'cause I have a real desire to… I'm a bass player first and foremost and a bandmember, and there's a lot of things that come along with that. My craft, being a bass player in MEGADETH, has been its best when I've kept my nose clean."

On whether the lifestyle of hard partying and excessive drug use gets old after a while:

Ellefson: "I couldn't even imagine, having done this now — 30 years of MEGADETH this year, actually, so to think back, at this point, to have lived a life like I used to back in the day, I don't know that we'd still be here having this conversation. So, for me, really, I had to really get back to just the real passion of why I even am here doing any of this, which is, I just love being a bass player in a killer metal band — that was my goal from age 11. When I picked the thing up, that's what I wanted to do. And I guess maybe if there's any inspiration from that, when you lock on to something you really like, man, just go for it — whether you're playing bass or whatever line of work it is — just really go for it and give it your all. I never had a back-up plan, and that seemed to work out pretty good."

On whether being sober has allowed him to connect with the MEGADETH audience better:

Ellefson: "Oh, sure, without a doubt. I mean, to actually look people in the eyes and see the whites of their eyes and see that front-row passion. Obviously, in the back of the arena, it's kind of the abyss and you don't have that personal contact. But, yeah, to be present and be in the moment. The fans pay a lot of money for a ticket, it's a special moment in their lives to be there to see us perform, so the least I can do is be present for them."

Definitely a good dude. This guy always has the fans in mind first. He keeps the fans connected wherever he goes and does. Say what you want about Mustaine, having another Megadeth album is better than having none at all.

I really miss the band that billed itself as a 'state of the art speed metal band'. I don't think they have it in them anymore. You have to be hungry and angry to write albums like RIP. Probably why it's easy for Dave to channel CTE-esque songwriting, but when he tries to get fast it's some watered down, pseudo-thrash that doesn't quite get up to par.

I guess I just don't hear them claiming to be a "state of the art speed metal band" anymore; which would lead me to believe they're not looking necessarily to go in that direction. And as I think through their catalog, RIP is really the only album that fits the label you've (or they've) thrown out. So are you suggesting that RIP was their only good album?

I guess I just hear a lot of variety in all their records, yet I appreciate certain elements each album brings. Trying to classify Megadeth music in one sentance seems tough to me - like it wouldn't make sense. And again, I don't think that's the music they're trying to write anyway...for several years now.

I stated 'billed', as in past tense. And I'm not suggesting anything, I'm just stating that I wish the band who billed themselves as a 'state of the art speed metal band' would return. I didn't try to classify them in one sentence, that's Dave's own description, he came up with in the 90s.

Reading comprehension. Look into it.

Ok, fair enough. Apologies for misreading you.

I was simply trying to state my belief that they don't seem to be interested in being a speed metal band anymore and haven't really written anything along those lines for years.

Aside from our discussion, however, I am curious as to why so many people (not implying you) seem to want Megadeth to re-write the first three albums in their catalogue. And what is it about their newer material that fans find so lacking?

I think what's happened and what many fans are dissatisfied with is that Megadeth has become predictable. The first four were so different from each other, the last three or four are interchangeable to me. Not that that's not expected from a band that's been around so long, don't think Dave has it in him to be unpredictable anymore or to want to take chances at this point in his career.

I hope it is good. You know, endgame was actually good. Some of their other albums are ridiculously bad. Unfortunately, for the most part I disliked 13.

My favorite megadeth album is "So far so good... So what?" ---which is the album poor production quality. Still, it remains my favorite of all of them.

Fucking hate when bands say their new cd sounds like the old classic stuff cause even though I know it's not going to be true,I get excited & then can't wait for the release & then rush out to purchase it & then am most usually disappointed & go back to the old catalog that I love.So FUCK YOU guys for saying it.

Yeah, its the Achilles’ heel of metal fans. When a band says it sounds like their early stuff, even though we know its probably not true, we fall for it anyways.

It's funny how bands constantly promote the album as sounding like their old stuff, but then bait and switch with nu-watered down metal. Why don't they just say it sounds like a continuation of our last album? If they think saying it will sound like their old stuff is what will get people to buy it, then why not actually have the album sound like the old stuff?

It's a shame to see those guys reverting to another drug (religion) to replace one. Mustaine is a nutcase, we all know it, but Ellefson always came out as a wiser guy. Knowing he's deep into that christian bullshit lessens the respect I have for the guy. I am still and will always be puzzled by those born-again people who, from their perspective on the world as global touring musicians, should know so much better than that...

Agreed that Dave should keep his mouth shut at times, or at least think harder before he opens it.

But my curiosity is why does someone's relgious beliefs change your level of respect for them? Isn't that much a personal experience? You don't know who they are or what they've gone through? Furthermore, why should their occupation as global musicians make their Christian faith any less valid?

anytime a band has gone a far enough distance away from their original sound, where not only the fans, but they start to notice, they just love to start off by saying "our new album is just like our old material that our fans know and love! so rest assured....the new album WON'T suck big floppy donkey dick like our last one did!" It's never even close to their original sound.

I'm not buying the "old school sound" bullshit. I've fallen for that too many times! But that was a cool interview. I met David and both his parents on the Peace Sells tour at First Avenue in the Twin Cities. David was cool as hell and his parents were just these old farm folks who bought every magazine Megadeth was in. His Mom told me his Dad took him to see KISS when he was 12 years old and it was all about music from that day forward. All his early bands practiced at their house. Great family, real down to earth people!

It's such a generic statement to make these days from Aerosmith to Megadeth. My theory is half way through the recordings there realizing it's shit and management will tell them to tell everyone "It sounds like old school, or it sounds like back in the day or my favorite...It sounds raw"

"Thirteen" wasn't necessarily bad or good, but lacking flat out aggression as their last few albums. Far better than "Risk" or any of the pop-metal albums they released in the late 90s or early 00s. I'm still on board though.

is a hypocritical, crazy old loon incapable of making good music anymore.

I mean lol @ 13, what a shitfest... and how deluded are the lyrics?

"You hate the way I wear my clothes,
You hate my friends and where? we go,
You think you know what's best for me,
You hated everything you've seen in me,
Have you looked in a mirror?"

Who wrote those lyrics? Dave's kids? Cos it really does sound like the sort of thing an angry teen would say... TO HIS OLD CONSERVATIVE CHRISTIAN DOUCHEBAG WASHED UP ROCKSTAR ASSHOLE DAD WHO WON'T SHUT UP ABOUT JESUS AND DRAGGING HIM TO CHURCH.

Fucking Dee Snider needs to pay a visit to the Mustaine house, Dave is turning into that "whaddayouwannadowithyourlife?" guy.

I wasn't very impressed with Th1rt3en on first listen. It seemed like the usual Megadeth fare and nothing much else. After a second and third listen, I really started getting into the arrangements and lyrics and, as I took it apart by layers, came to appreciate it as a solid album. Have said that, I sure hope the new album is better than Th1rt3en.

I thought Th1rte3n was hit or miss. Some of it was alright, some of it was boring. Keep in mind, most of that record was old material thrown together most likely so they could get off Road Runner.

I thought the guitar riffs on Endgame were easily some of their very best next to Rust in Peace. Even if the lyrics left something to be desired.

I take what Ellefson says about the new album being similar to early Megadeth with a grain of salt. Just because he described TWNAH as a slamming metal album which it was not.
