MACHINE HEAD Holds 'Really Productive First Jam Session' For Next Album - Feb. 3, 2013
San Francisco Bay Area metallers MACHINE HEAD held their first jam session a few days ago in hopes of sparking material for their next album. Writing in the latest installment of his "The General Journals: Diary Of A Frontman... And Other Ramblings", MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn stated: "Dave [McClain, drums], Phil [Demmel, guitar] and I practiced the other day and it was a really productive first jam session. McClain had about five rockin' riffs, Demmel brought in the skeleton of what feels like a great song and I had a few riffs that we rocked on, no full songs, but solid riffs. It felt good, good to be moving on from [2011's 'Unto The Locust']. Super proud of that record, but it's time to move on, and we're ready to move on. Bring on the future with an open embrace."

Flynn last month played five acoustic solo shows around his appearance at this year's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show, which was held January 25-27 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Regarding the performances, he said: "The shows were awesome — really, really, REALLY awesome! I needed this so bad.

"To everyone who came out to these shows and made them such a special and intense event, thank you. They got heavy, really heavy and I had no idea how heavy these would get. Therapeutic. I didn't know what to expect or what they would be like. I made no setlist except the opening and closing song. Chose songs we probably won't play live again or at least haven't played live in a reeeeeeeally long time, and cover songs we would never cover.

"To my surprise, I ended up telling a lot of stories before each song. Every time I thought I'd been going on too long with a story ('Am I talking too much?') people would ask for more. In Fullerton, I got a 'sto-ry, sto-ry, sto-ry' chant. It was hilarious.

"It was surprising how fun these shows were. Hell, I'm playing a bunch of acoustic songs, not party metal! But it was a party here and there, and more than anything for our small group of 100 to 200 each night, it was a release. A massive communal release. I was choked up more than a few times, sing-a-longs were life-affirming and in San Diego I got an encore!! San Diego was amazing."

"Machine Fucking Head Live", the new live album from MACHINE HEAD, sold 3,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. It's the band's second live effort; "Hellalive" came out in 2003.

MACHINE HEAD's most recent studio album, "Unto The Locust", sold more than 17,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 22 on The Billboard 200 chart — putting MACHINE HEAD in the Top 25 for the first time in the band's 17-year history.

"Machine Fucking Head Live" was recorded at various tour stops across the globe last year. It features songs from throughout the band's expansive catalog, including crowd favorites like "Imperium", "Aesthetics of Hate", "Locust", "Ten Ton Hammer", "This is the End" and "Halo".

"Machine Fucking Head Live" was mixed and mastered at Trident Studios in Pacheco, California by Juan Urteaga and Robb Flynn.

MACHINE HEAD is currently seeking a new label home following the expiration of the band's contract with longtime record company Roadrunner Records.

Rob has an incredible clean vocals, I don't know why he chooses to sing shitty cookie monster vocals, his clean voice will fit beautifully over their aggressive stuff and attract more fans too.

He's saying how he "hasn't been this excited about anything in a long time" (in reference to his acoustic shows) or that he's ready to move on from "Locust."

Me thinks maybe that wasn't one of his favorite albums?

I hope it sounds like the Burning Red and they bring back the rapping. THAT was clearly their most innovative album.

Locust shits all over Through The Ashes IMO. Doesn't top The Blackening but it's close. They just throw in a couple new elements.

Didn't they tour for like 3 years on The Blackening? They're already doing another album? Sounds a little.... suspect. I hope they abandon whatever path led them to the tepid Unto The Locust and find the path that led them to the thundering Through The Ashes.... and The Blackening. I can't even listen to the last half of Unto The Locust and NOTHING and that albums matches anything on the two prior disks.

Still a fan - but they need to get the fire back.

They never before toured as long for an album as with TB, this was exceptional.
They toured 1 and a half years for UTL, which is still much longer than most bands tour.

The whole run from TTAOE to UTL was fantastic, eager to see and hear what they can come up with next.

I found Unto The Locust a bit of a disapointment. Just hope the new album will have shorter songs and have a bit more range and balance.

By the way, no mention of Adam Duce. Has he left? And since when did they leave Roadrunner? I am so out of the loop lately.

burn my eyes.

the more things change.

burning red for some reason.

hell, even supercharger and through the ashes of empires had good moments.

BUT they'll NEVER be as good as the first two albums AGAIN. why? because these guys don't fucking realise what a good thing they had going on on those albums... metal, hardcore punk, groove, grunge all mixed into one clusterfuck. brilliant. now they're just predictable and tedious.

I absolutely loved Ashes and Blackening, but I couldn't get into Locust at all. They didn't try anything new on it, it was a continuation of the same formula from the previous 2 albums, epic, as many riffs as you can fit in a song. I just think they couldn't keep up the quality. Rob has said he wants to do shorter songs, I'd be interested in hearing that from them.

Had they continued recording BME/TMTC over and over again until their 7th record, no one would care for them anymore. Why? Because they'd become boring and predictable and all they could do in that style was covered on those two records. Hell, the band even thinks TMTC was too much of same/same as BME.

They did what they did, kept it fresh to the audience and themselves and headline the biggest metal-festivals in Europe.

You can't please everybody, but apart from Supercharger they did pretty much everything right in their career.
