VINCE NEIL: 'No New Album' From MÖTLEY CRÜE - Feb. 5, 2013
Anne Erickson of Music News Nashville recently conducted an interview with MÖTLEY CRÜE singer Vince Neil. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Music News Nashville: Have any of MÖTLEY CRÜE's hits been especially difficult to write?

Vince: There aren't really any hard songs to write. It's usually pretty easy, if it gets hard, it gets shuffled away and something else comes up, or it becomes something you can go back to it and use other parts with it to make it work better. Most of the hit songs have been easy to write, though.

Music News Nashville: How do you go about writing music with the CRÜE?

Vince: It starts out with a guitar riff, and then we put it together with the other instruments and put a melody to it. After the melody and song structure are finished, we edit different parts in and out, and eventually, it all combines to become a song.

Music News Nashville: Is there talk of a new MÖTLEY CRÜE album?

Vince: No — no new album. What I'm hearing is that maybe two or three or four more songs might come out to go with that song we released [last] year, but it will be something like an EP, not an album. Our schedule seems to have a lot of touring. If something did come out in the form of an EP, it would probably be in the beginning of 2014.

There isn't much room for albums in the future of music, so it makes sense to release individual songs. The problem is it puts a lot of pressure on the song to be of high quality.

There's plenty of room for albums. Maybe not for worn down pop acts like Motley Crue, but for actually decent and still worthwhile bands.

I mean albums in the industry, which is collapsing. I suppose bands could still release full albums digitally, but face it most bands come up with a few great songs then throw together some fillers for the rest of it. Pumpkins & Motley are bands that clearly have no interest in operating that way anymore.

I get that middle aged guys still playing with their vinyl are upset that albums are going out of style, but you can't deny reality.

i would rather see them and any other of my favorite bands make albums. i hate it when some people that just listen to the hits wich are usually the worst songs on an album by a rock band. and these people check out your albums and say this and that band is great and then put them on and only play 1-2 songs and just the hits, and then these talk to you and say some great bands are bad while they just listen to 1-2 songs an album and dont know anyone in the bands.

just doesn't have it in them anymore. They really don't care about making new music, since the fans only want to hear songs from the early albums made years ago.

Besides, their best stuff was written when they were young and hungry and had something to prove.

Now they are all old fat rich and boring, so what's their inspiration now?

I love Motley Crue!

The problem with this whole interview is that any real Motley Crue fan knows Vince doesn't write any of the music, has very little input if any in writing the lyrics, doesn't have much say in anything and doesn't make any decisions for the band. Vince is only a hired employee of Motley Crue and receives a salary. Same goes for Tommy Lee.

Once those guys quit or were fired in the past, all of their rights to the corporation were bought out. When they returned to the band it was as a freelance performer.

Nikki Sixx and Mick Mars own the name Motley Crue and they write the music and make all decisions along with management.

So, it doesn't really matter what Vince says or thinks.

If Nikki Sixx says there is going to be a new Motley Crue album, there will be a new Motley Crue album.

They wrote and demoed a few songs while they were doing there Las Vegas residency. Not sure how many songs.

I know Nikki has been real wishy washy over the past few months about what they're going to do as far as new music goes. One day he says a couple of 3 or 4 song EP's. A week later he says they'll probably do a traditional album because it's too hard to promote an EP of 3 songs.

One thing I do know is that Nikki is busy right now, writing and recording the next Sixx A.M. album. He's also getting ready to go back out on the road with Motley in the spring, so there really isn't much time to work on new Crue music.

if you actually gave a shit about music and were a real band that works together....you'd put out music...albums, whatever...if music was the focal point of what you do...you'd put out music....Crue is nothing but a traveling circus act...with shit blowing up and drums going upside down.......and they make a lot of money doing it

all that time on the road
at soundchecks
in hotels

you can't come up with more than 1 song in the 7-8 years since "Saints Of Los Angeles" (an album largely written & played by DJ Ashba & James Michael) came out?

doesn't sound like a band to me
doesn't sound like they are making a concerted effort to create and record music

it's obvious to everyone that Vince and Tommy can't stand each other...and Mick is on his last legs (god bless him) and Nikki cares more about Sixx AM

music is their focal point? you actually believe that
do they play music at their shows? sure.....
you're taking my point pretty literal

Sincerely,

This is what you said -

Which is jaw-droppingly stupid. Without the music there would be no money. The last time I saw the Crue - fall, 2011, they sucked. Mick Mars and Tommy Lee killed - but even they couldn't carry the bloated jokes this singer and Nikki "You eating that?" Sixx have become. So yeah- I'm REALLY defending Motley Crue.

"Our songs start with the guitar riff." -- we always figured Mick was the only one with any talent.

"No new album, just lots of touring." -- we know how it is in the music business today. The only way to make money is to tour.

"I'm hungry." -- Vince Meal tells it to you straight.

That shit ain't happening now. Fuck that. Bands don't deserve money for songs that aren't worth shit. We as consumers can now just buy the songs we want. When's the last time anyone heard an album where EVERY song was great?

... we all know the Crue don't get along, but they are willing to put business first and play gigs because a) Mick's health might not give them the chance to do this for much longer and b) they can make a ton of cash at it.

They even admit that on the road, Vince leaves right after they come off stage, and Nikki keeps his family far away from Tommy's dressing room parties.

It's not feasible to release a full album these days. Just release it in capsule or single form as you record them. Then issue an album at a later date. Also, Motley tours because people want to see them. I first saw them open for Ozzy in 84 at the coliseum in Seattle and that were ok. Just saw them with KISS last year and they were GREAT! Vince never sounded better which wasn't the case in past tours. Kudos to Crue!

Grew up wth the Crue and to this day I still believe the Corabi album is the best Crue album in all aspects. Sonically, lyrically, and heaviness. Of course I still love the raw demo sounding too fast for love and then the bit more polished Shout but aside from those 3 albums, the rest are all about half good. I think Saints is the best they can do now so it doesn't surprise me that they are going the EP route. Even when they were touring Saints they had what? 2 songs from that album in the setlist?

Point is, how can you play night after night and have to listen to Vince sing half the songs and not even sure you would call his now nasal witch scream singing the other half for no other reason but for cash? They have no pride or integrity. Take the roller coaster away, the chick's, the Pyro and the titty cam and you are left with a pretty sad live act.

I saw the comeback Red White and Crue show and they played almost 3 hours and they were firing on all cylinders and Vince was able to hit the notes and sing all the lyrics. But it was a comeback, the guys hit the gym for months before and rehearsed like madmen. They had a motive. Shitty comeback end of the line. Successful comeback, subsequent retirement fund packing tours to come. It's all about the cash kiddies.....

They have become the Steel Panther of their own band.....

Good post. That last show I saw was really sad. As I said, Mars and Lee were spot on - but Nikki "Sad Tub Of Goo" Sixx basically phoned in his performance and Vince ran out of gas about halfway through. And 90 minutes and no encores! What - did the dessert cart show up?

And to Rocker9936 - yes, people want to see the Crue. No doubt. But the reason they tour so much has a lot to do with that Live Nation deal.

Doesn't matter much. Crue hasn't released a solid album since 1994.

But Vince should release more solo albums though. Tattoos and Tequila was much better, and sounded way more like classic Crue than Saints Of Los Angeles anyway. Even if it was 99% cover tunes. Vince is a true rocker, while Nikki is just a trend following poser. And Nikki calls the shots in Crue.

yea they were outsides compared to lot of bands that were supposed be cool, Motley Crue were too much drug addicts and stuff like that to be real contenders, ok they sold around 6 million of Dr Feelgood but thats isnt so much compared to bands that were realy selling at that time. but still they were and are very big. and so what they havent had hits since 91??? not many rock have at least not on mainstream radio, or at least not good bands, mostly some watered down commercialsed crap rock. and so what the hits are usually the simplest most borings songs on any album by rock/metal band.
