CAMPBELL On LAST IN LINE: 'I Feel Like We're Entitled To Go Out And Play' Early DIO Material - Feb. 9, 2013
Former DIO and current DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell revealed in April 2012 that he is planning to join forces with three other original DIO members to play "some gigs" that will see the musicians performing material from the early DIO records that Campbell appeared on. Dubbed LAST IN LINE, Campbell, Vinny Appice (drums), Jimmy Bain (bass) and Claude Schnell (keyboards) will be accompanied by singer Andrew Freeman, who has previously fronted HURRICANE and LYNCH MOB.

Speaking to David "Gus" Griesinger of BackstageAxxess.com at last month's NAMM (National Association Of Music Merchants) show at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California, Campbell stated about reuniting with the original DIO band (see video below): "I'm excited about that. We're calling it LAST IN LINE after the second [DIO] album. It's the original DIO band — myself, Vinny Appice on drums, Jimmy Bain on bass, Claude Schnell on keyboards, and we found a terrific singer called Andy Freeman, who can totally do justice to the songs. Actually, he doesn't sound anything like Ronnie [James Dio], which is great, [because] I don't wanna draw that comaprison. Ronnie was a very unique singer, but Andy is a great singer in his own right, and he certainly sings the songs very respectfully.

"The original band, we actually wrote the majority of that material as a band, so I feel like we're entitled to go out and play it. I don't think we're a tribute band or a cover band or anything like that.

"There's obviously a big legacy of DIO music, and I think I'm right in saying that most people would think that those early DIO albums are the strongest, so we are just chuffed to play it.

"Right now we're in the middle of booking a European tour. It looks like we'll start in probably Bulgaria or somewhere like that in July. We'll do a few regional warm-up shows in Southern California and Nevada and Arizona, probably, in June or July.

"We just started rehearsing and it sounds fucking amazing."

Campbell and Ronnie James Dio worked together on the first three DIO albums 1983's "Holy Diver", 1984's "The Last in Line" and 1985's "Sacred Heart" — before Irishman Campbell left to join WHITESNAKE in 1987.

Speaking to Rush On Rock in January 2011, Campbell had this to say about the passing of the iconic singer: “I was numb to the whole thing. I hadn't talked to Ronnie in 25 years, so it wasn't as if we were close. My mother died nine or 10 days before him, so I was preoccupied with that. And my father died nine months before that. It was a really tough year on a personal level, and I had enough to think about."

He added, "The news about Ronnie James Dio just bounced off me. It was a difficult relationship on a personal level anyway. I was really proud of the music we made together but it was tough being in a band together. But he died way too young."

In a May 2011 interview with Brazil's Roadie Crew magazine, Wendy Dio stated about the controversy surrounding Ronnie's relationship with Campbell (in a 2003 interview Vivian called Ronnie "an awful businessman and, way more importantly, one of the vilest people in the industry."), "[Vivian] always said that he hated all the albums that he played on with Ronnie, and that was very hurtful to Ronnie. Very hurtful. Would you like someone who said something like that about your albums? He said a lot of things in the press that I don't wanna get into, because it really wasn't Ronnie's feud at all. Ronnie didn't fire him. I fired [Vivian]. He wanted as much money as Ronnie wanted. He thought he was as important as Ronnie was, and that was just wrong. But I don't wanna get into that. It's water under the bridge. It doesn't matter."

Damn right \m/\m/ !!!

It would have been ok if he had at least patched things up with Ronnie and made amends for trashing Dio in the magazines years back. Ronnie is gone and now this guy wants to honor the Dio Years? Fuck off asshole, your milking Def Leppard too just phoning it in onstage and like Jugulator said start "writing some riffs that matter". Ronnie was extremely well liked and respected by just about everyone. The fact Viv you didn't says everything i need to know about you.

this whiny bitch talk about how he is entitled to play music he disowned for almost 30 years almost makes difficult to listen to those records anymore. but when I do I realize the reason for doing so and that is true talent behind that music and that is od coarse the 1 and only voice of Ronnie James Dio not the overrated hack who plays guitar. and they co wrote? please nothing anything they have done since then comes remotely close to sounding like the music they made in DIO.

What a disgusting human Vivian is and was.

He turned his back on anything metal most of career in Leppard. He spoiled Leppard by not writing a fucking decent riff in 20 plus years. He is a fucking shadow of the late great Steve Clark- who was the heart and soul of the band's music.

And he never had the decency to make things right while Dio was alive. They were enemies. Whenever fans asked him about his playing on the Dio albums, he changed subject and pretended that was silliness behind him.

Then for him to try and cash in on it, and pretend that he actually likes METAL and Dio's music? FUCK HIM.

While nobody can deny those Dio records with him were amazing and some of the best in the catalog, the fact that you shit on him when he's around then after he passes you feel the need to do this because you "wrote all of the material?" Seriously...go fuck yourself Viv.

It's bad enough you took the Def Leppard gig, wasted your talent chugging a chords and yelling "Let's Get Rocked!" bringing zero to the table with that band. Then you join Thin Lizzy for a moment picking on that carcass now this?

I might be interested if you played with that era of the Dio band, recorded new material and toured under a totally different name for it sprinkling songs from that catalog in the live set (see Velvet Revolver..good on em they put out their own albums and threw in some G&R and STP songs in there..which sounded killer BTW) but this is a cash grab...plain and simple.

Like any of this horseshit people, if you don't go and support it, hopefully it will disappear.

I'm more annoyed by Vinny Appice's involvement with this project. He owes Ronnie more loyalty than this.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is why Sabbath didn't invite him back in after the contract issues with Bill Ward. Other then the fact that he has absolutely no swing in his playing. Swings like a brick wall.

Campbell and Ronnie were both wrong with their stupid feud.
But, Campbell spent years trashing Dio and the music that he's now supposedly so proud of.

Sabbath / Heaven and Hell (Iommi and Butler) handled Ronnie's passing and legacy with genuine class.

One powerful show in his memory.

Even Ozzy Osbourne stepped up and gave the man proper respect. Reached out to him when he was sick.

Vivian for whatever reason didn't and that's a shame.

How many Dio related tributes are there now anyway?
There's too much of this bullshit going on. Wendy Dio approved or not, this is getting pretty fucking lame.

.... here we go again.

- Vivian is not doing the Dio shows for cash. He makes plenty doing the Def Leppard gig, so calling this a "cash grab" or anything similar is ill informed.

- If someone you worked with 25 years ago, and hadn't spoken to since after an ugly parting of the ways died, what would you do? You'd probably shrug and say "Oh well, that's sad" and move on with whatever you were doing. If your mother died nine days before, would you even do that much? Probably not, so let's quit the holier than thou act.

- Vinny Appice was THERE, and none of you were. He knows firsthand what happened with Dio and Campbell, and if he is okay with this project, then no one has a reasonable right to complain.

- Dio was a fantastic performer, and by most accounts, a great guy. But let's not pretend he was a total saint. He quit Sabbath because he didn't want to play on two lousy shows that Ozzy was headlining for his "farewell" performances.

Now that my moment of logic is done, go back to the bashing.

I agree with a lot of what you said. However, its the timing of this project that I think is what people most hold as suspect. Vivian for years, trashed Dio and the songs he wrote. Now it seems that he wants to go out and celebrate those very songs he used to hate. I agree that it isn't a necessarily a cash grab. Personally, I think its because he's bored with Def Leppards extended downtime between albums and tours. I will say though, that Vivian has expressed his desire to play more rock in the past few years. I'm going to take the high road and believe he's doing this as a way to move out of the pop circuit for a while and get down and dirty with some good ol rock guitar playing. As for Vinny's involvement? I don't think he's dishonoring Dio in any way by playing with Vivian. Its more like getting the old band together again for some reliving of the past. Maybe with Ronnie's death, Vivian had a change of heart. Its been known to happen.

to write those songs and have as much right to play them as Dio did! People are sheep and blind to the fact that Dio was not a nice person to begin with. He was an amazing vocalist but had the Napoleon complex. Vivian had no reason or desire to patch up his differences with Dio and that was his right. Vivian was/is the only one that can play those songs the way they were meant to be played.

Dio without Ronnie James Dio = NOT Dio.

The pikey cunt done nothing but trash Dio in the music press for decades, and NOW he wants to play Dio songs? The time for this nostalgia act was when RJD was still alive and a one-off reunion show or tour was within the realm of possibility.

I'm sorry Viv... but this is way too little, way too late. You'd be better off concentrating on writing NEW songs with this (not so much tribute as) "insult" band.

which i think he did, or helped write, he's entitled to play it.

even if he's the second coming of Hitler.

now if the stories that Dio fucked him over financially are true -- and no one here knows for sure unless they were there (and a roadies once posted here and seemed to have some inside info) then i think it's totally understandable why Viv hated him and said negative shit about him and metal.

if you were fucked over financially for something great you helped create, i bet you'd be speaking ill towards the person who fucked you over.

give me a hundreds thumb-downs, but if Viv was getting less than the lighting guys, as he has claimed, yet he was writing the guitar riffs to those classic albums, he has a legitimate reason for acting the way he did.

if he was paid fairly for his co-writing than no, he doesn't.

but unless you were there signing the contracts and receiving the cheques yourself, you just don't know.

just because Dio was wonderful to fans it doesn't mean he compensated his bandmates fairly.

and the riffs and solos on those albums were amazing. last i checked, Dio wasn't King Diamond and wrote the riffs himself.

but keep ranting if it makes you feel better.

Sure Campbell helped write it and he's entitled to play it. I also agree it's not a cash grab. Ronnie's fans are entitled to think Vivian Campbell is a total hypocrite too. He has to live with the fact that some people are bothered by this and he probably doesn't give 2 shits. Maybe Vinny could have helped these 2 patch up their differences.. I'm sure he could see both sides of the story better than any of us. Seems weird to me that Vinny NEVER spoke up for Vivian in public while Ronnie was alive too. I'll be the Last in Line to go see this.

Ronnie doesn't write riffs, just ask Iommi. Ronnie wrote the riff to Shadow of the Wind and wrote all of Atom & Evil, plus he either co-wrote or fully wrote all of the DIO songs. Check your booklets for the notes.

Let RJD and his music rest in peace, in my opinion! But I think the near unanimous distaste towards Campbell doing this speaks for itself. You just can't bag on music you made for 30 years and then suddenly decide to celebrate it. And I honestly don't get why he's doing this. It's not a cash grab, they are going to play bars while Def Lep still plays arenas. It's almost like he's still spiteful towards Dio!! Crazy

If Vivian, Vinnie, Jimmy, and Claude want to perform some shows together and play the music that they wrote, good for them. I look forward to it and will be a first day buyer when the tickets are on sale. Haters can stay home, and don't think that you have the vast majority of people on your side here, haters. You just have the rage filled motivation to spew your bile on the internet.

I don't believe Vivian's story about getting paid less than the lighting guy. I think Vivian blew his pay on stupid stuff, plus had to maintain his guitars and gear, and so after all that his final takehome pay was less than he thought he deserved. He's a prick, but he plays great guitar.

Plus: He's technically half right, the band did write some of the material together.
Minus: Vivian swore off metal years ago and only gets interested when RJD passes? That's awfully telling.
Plus: It's the original Dio band itself, so that's cool.
Minus: Who the fuck is Andy Freeman?
Plus: It's cool to see Vivian acknowledging his past and playing what he's best at rather than Def Leppard bullshit.
Minus: Vivian's status as a "guitar hero" faded 30 years ago, he ain't getting it back no matter how many Dio songs he wants to play.
Plus: Ronnie's legacy is absolutely eternal.
Minus: Vivian's said some fucking scumbag shit about Ronnie over the years and everybody knows it.

The last plus: Vivian isn't making a lot of money from this, I'd imagine.

Ultimate decision: I won't buy a ticket, although I wish Jimmy Bain, Claude Schnell and Vinny Appice all the best.

The moronic "mouthbreathers" are people who think 3/4 of the band that wrote the songs should have less rights to their own songs than a common bar band would. Yes, people so devoid of logic that they believe Dio's long-time friend Vinny Appice would participate in this if there was any validity to the unhinged rantings and accusations against Campbell. And yes, people so consumed by hatred towards a complete stranger that they think the entire world should be deprived of ever seeing these songs performed again by the band that recorded them -- because they are so worked up about the issue that they alone should decide what is allowed.

Pffft. Go back to your cave, troglodyte.

'I Feel Like We're Entitled To Go Out And Play' Early DIO Material - Campbell is right! you think that early Dio would have been half as good as it was if it didn't have that special chemistry & writing of that first 3 albums line-up?!

Campbell, Appice and Bain along with Ronnie Dio defined that band. Once Campbell was gone the material suffered.
